RELIGION

What is the predominant religion in your nation?

Atheism (roughly 86%)

Is there an official State religion in your nation?

No. Religious diversity is officially recognised.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?

Freedom of religion is a legal right in the PDSRA, and the expression of religious freedom stops short only if it crosses the bounds of outright intolerence (it is an offence to write hatefully and "at length" or "repetitively" about any religion, or to do so orally when adressing a gathering of ten persons or more).

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?

Allowed. Many (but not all) members of the government are avowedly atheist. It should be noted that Indigenous Ariddian (Wymgani) cultures contain no sense of the spiritual, although some Wymgani have, of course, embraced "imported" religions (Christianity, Islam, etc...)

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?

Ariddia is a fully secular State; there is no relation whatsoever between government and spirituality, the latter being defined as an entirely private, individual matter.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?

None whatsoever. It is legal to campaign on a religious basis, but it is unconstitutional to enact any form of legislation that is grounded on religious principles. The main parties (Democratic Communist Party, Movement for a Democratic Alternative, and People's Party) all exclude religious motifs from their political campaigns.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?

No, although some Ariddians tend to equate atheism with Ariddian identity. But since Ariddia is a multicultural society with a variety of religions, few such parallels are ever drawn.

EDUCATION

Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?

Education is compulsory for all children residing in the nation on a permanent basis (i.e., who will be staying on Ariddian soil for at least 18 months), regardless of whether or not they are of Ariddian nationality. It is compulsory until the age of 18, although past the age of 16 special arrangements can be implemented so that young people can work and study at the same time if they wish.

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?

Education is free (i.e. government funded) at all levels, up to and including university, and specialised training. As Ariddia is (essentially) a society without money, this is an issue only for foreign students really; they are entitled to study for free in Ariddia like anyone else.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?

Yes. University education is highly encouraged.

How would you best define university education in your nation?

[I'll have to think about this one and come back to it in more detail.]

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?

Significantly so. See below.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?

'Moral' censorship (defined as 'the press' duty of ethical self-control') is limited to preventing the publishing of hateful writing or writing promoting serious crime (such as the murder of people or animals, genocide, violent acts of intolerance, etc...). There is no political censorship.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?

All industry in Ariddia is controlled by the government, and all Ariddians are employed by the government. However, the press has the right to express its own opinions.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?

Yes, the press is entitled to criticise the government.

POLITICS

Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?

Multi-party. However, the voters have got so used to just re-electing the same party that it's become virtually a one-party system.

What are the main political parties in your nation?

The Democratic Communist Party is presently in power, and focuses on social justice (employment, housing, education, healthcare...) and the environment. The Movement for a Democratic Alternative is a right-of-centre party that advocates a return to capitalism, and finally the People's Party shares many of the DCP's beliefs, but rejects environmental concerns and civil rights as "unimportment"; the PP wishes to strengthen the economy as its priority, while maintaining a communist system.

These are the three parties presently represented in the People's Prime Parliament. Out of 99 seats, the DCP has 95, the MDA has 3, and the PP has one - which means that the DCP pays no attention whatsoever to the demands and concerns of the other two parties.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?

Yes.

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?

See above. An overwhelming majority of Ariddians have little interest in debating possible changes, but those who do usually focus on the economy more than anything else. Very few people question the people's social rights, which are viewed as virtually sacrosanct.

RELIGION

What is the predominant religion in your nation?

The majority of the nation practice a mix of Catholicism, Islam, and Tao. This is endorsed by "activists" who are working on behalf of the government, allowing people to feel like they are rebelling when in actuality the government prefers this brand of religion. The strict moral guidelines in the first two religions keep people firm in their belief that by suffering, they will achieve greater glory in the afterlife, while Taoism entails them to "let it flow" and accept what happens to them with stoic good grace.

Is there an official State religion in your nation?

No, the State does not officially recognize any religion, claiming that religion shackles people to unnecessary bonds and requires that too much money be paid in tithes to people who are not duly selected by the government or its people.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?

While no one is ever arrested or refused to practice a religion, it is discouraged (except in underground temples that the police "look the other way" on, as it does serve the State's purpose, however the secrecy of it makes it feel illicit) and openly worshipping people are generally removed for "disturbing the peace."

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?

Atheism is perpetually smiled upon, and borders closely on Stateism, wherein the State has divine power, without any actual divine presence needed.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?

Officially, yes. Unofficially, the State controls all underground temples, with Military Police officers acting as priests.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?

It is used to control the populace without having the State break their will unnecessarily, however there is no overt religious themes in the government.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?

No. Most people say that their cultural heritage and obedience to the law are the basis of their identity.

EDUCATION

Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?

Yes, although not a very good education. Most of the education is social philosophy and technical skills, such as science and math. History is taught from Policia Meurta produced textbooks and other nations are looked down upon, if not omitted outright. All children from age two until eighteen are required to attend school, under punishment of imprisonment until their eighteenth birthday, at which time they join the Service for a period not less than four years.

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?

Absolutely free. No private schools are allowed within the nation, as all education must be supplied by the State.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?

Yes, it does. However the education is less a 'liberal arts' based education, and more one on technical and science skills (for weapons development and technical research) and national doctrine (Polica Muerta history and philosophy "law and order makes right"). Literacy is not highly promoted, and is kept at a barely functioning level, nor is the reading of literature, philosophy, or any 'free thinker' ideals promoted or even presented.

How would you best define university education in your nation?

Universities are State run, only offer degrees in Criminal Justice (no defense lawyer classes, though), Psychology, and the pure sciences (chemistry, biology, medical, engineering, etc.; no philosophy, sociology, history, etc.) and only attended by those who have finished their time in the Service. Not everyone is accepted, as most go into labor or remain a part of the Military Police force that dominates the country. Those who show technical skills are then put through a series of psychological examinations and interviews to determine their technical ability and drive, what they hope to gain out of the university, and their loyalty. If it is determined that they want to gain technical skills to leave the Country or to perform something nefarious, they are refused entry and reported to the Military Police.

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?

The only newspaper allowed to print is called the "Freedom Times." It was put out after the Revolution that put the current El Presidente into power and is supposedly the voice of the people, veiling stories supplied by government officials as outrages of criminals against the populace and the heroic government stepping in to take charge.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?

Everything in the press is fabricated by the Government and approved by a Police Official.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?

Mouthpiece.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?

Criticisms usually end up being veiled praise. i.e., "The Police issued another curfew today. All people are to be inside by seven PM or are subject to arrest. Only when the police capture and prosecute these heinous criminals that roam our streets and terrorize our populace, will we be free of this unnecessary curfew."

The local religion, the Order of Baumwollos, has slightly more followers than Christianity (Baumwollian: 36.5%, Christian: 32%)

No religion is granted advantages over others, so there is no official State religion. The Baumwollian religion has much influence on our culture, but not on Ixdeian politics.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?
People are free to choose a religion, and are even encouraged to, seeing that the state donates money to benefit various religions.

The Church has no say in State matters and the State has no say in Church matters. However, the State gives money to build enough churches, temples, mosks, synagoges and other religious buildings to suit the demands of the people, and takes the advise of the Church in account.

There are a few Government papers which might be seen as 'promoting' the government's 'viewpoints', but the majority of papers is fairly independent.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?

POLITICS

Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?

We have a multi-party system here in Ixdeia. However, the more radical and anti-imperial parties tend to have a whole lot less sucess.

What are the main political parties in your nation?
The GCIP (General Centrist Imperial Party); a pro-imperial, conservative centrum party, with 56 seats of 200; the IWP (Ixdeian Worker's Party), a social-democratic labour party with 50 seats. Together with the liberal left LDU (Liberal Democratic Union), the biggest of the smaller parties (20 seats), they form the current government. However, the Pro-Business right party FEDA (Free Enterprise Democratic Alliance), currently at 46 seats, is expected to reap in the upcoming elections.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?
A party has to have a certain amount of members to be allowed to partake in the elections. They are free to express their views, and citizens are free to vote on them, but a party can be forbidden if its viewpoints violate civil laws (mostly on extreme racism).

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?
Religion and Spirituality, Education, and Social Welfare. We also want to continue our economic policies and improve civil rights in our country.

Dar-Kavryn

RELIGION

What is the predominant religion in your nation?

Shimekism, followed by Christianity, followed by the Cult of Shadows. Atheism is also quite common, and there are a great many minor religions.

Is there an official State religion in your nation?

No.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?

Near absolute, though religion is not considered a valid excuse for breaking the law.

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?

Allowed.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?

It is firmly believed that religion is not the government's business, and vice versa.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?

Rarely, though it is not forbidden as an issue.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?

Most citizens of Dar-Kavryn are proud of the kingdom's religious tolerance, and consider it an important aspect of their country.

EDUCATION

Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?

All citizens are required to learn basic reading, writing, mathematics, etc. They are encouraged to proceed as far as possible in the education system. There are no specific age limits.

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?

All schooling is funded by the government.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?

Yes - one of the highest.

How would you best define university education in your nation?

I'm not sure; the higher levels of the Dar-Kavryn school system are rather complicated.

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?

The press has a high degree of freedom; the biggest limits on it are technological.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?

Censorship is very rare, especially in times of peace; during wars, information may be blocked in the interest of national security.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?

Much of the press is independent, but Heralds, messengers of the King, and so forth also play a major role in news distribution.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?

Yes, but only with an explanation of the criticism. Simply cursing the government or some such would be seen as an insult to the King with no redeeming reason, and met with the wrath of the Royal Guard.

POLITICS

Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?

Power in Dar-Kavryn rests firmly in the hands of the King (or, sometimes, the Queen). Representatives are elected to make laws and advise the ruler, but there are no official, structured parties.

What are the main political parties in your nation?

None. Political parties are considered dangerous, both to the Monarchy and to the value of the representatives.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?

All citizens have the right to vote for representatives, and in the rare times when the ruler calls for a survey of the populace on a policy decision. All citizens also have the right to freedom of speech, especially in political matters (though, again, an insult to the ruler can have serious consequences).

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?[/QUOTE]

Should Dar-Kavryn follow an isolationist policy? How much so?
What is the best way for the school system to operate?
Should immigration be regulated? If so, how and to what extent?
How should the 'war on crime' be waged?
What is the proper balance between freedom of expression and decency?
What economic theories and policies should be followed?

Religion

There are only a handful of religious people in the Orion Sector, and none of them are humans. Religion isn’t illegal, but it’s frowned upon by society as a personal weakness. It implies, to the citizens of Orion, that the religious person needs some sort of fantasy to cope with day to day life.

Education

Education is free and compulsory up to the age of 18. It is also compulsory up to the age of 21, but the years of 18-21 aren’t free. Typical grade school (elementary, secondary, high school) goes through age 18. Then, the students are required to go to a specialty school (military academy, pre-med, etc.). Afterwards, they are free to pursuit further education at their own free will. Education is a high priority within the Steel Empire and the Orion Sector, and the government and the people take pride in their intelligence.

Freedom of the Press

There is no real freedom of the press within the Steel Empire and the Orion Sector. The government controls all press within the sector, although it does often show both sides of the story. It is not a mouthpiece of propaganda (there are other places for that) but it does include slants. In debates, people are allowed to criticize the Emperor’s (or any other high ranking public official) decisions, but not the Emperor himself. The penalty for doing so is anywhere from fines to jail time, to death.

Politics

There is one party within the Empire, and it is not even called a party. The Emperor makes the decisions, or delegates others to make the smaller decisions for him. The Emperor is Emperor for life or until he steps down. Throughout history, there has never been an Emperor who has stepped down.

Answers for the United Kingdom of the Shield proper are given in normal text. Answers for the Greater Realms of His Iansislean Majesty and the Gallagan Empire are given in italics.

RELIGION
What is the predominant religion in your nation?
Roman Catholicism is the most widely practiced denomination on the Shield. Some ten per cent of households register as Protestant of various denominations - most commonly Lutheran - with another three per cent practicing various non-Christian religions.
Most non-Shieldian subjects of His Iansislean Majesty report as Hindu, concentrated especially in the inland areas of the Gallagan Empire. Muslims make up a large minority in Iansislean Gallaga and a majority in other extra-Shieldian lands.

Is there an official State religion in your nation?
Cuius regio, eius religio. Roman Catholicism is the state religion in all His Iansislean Majesty's realms.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?
People declaring Roman Catholicism as their denomination and attending mass at least four times a year while abstaining from other places of worship receive a small tax break. All other instituted denominations and religions must pay a yearly tax to maintain a place of worship.
Subjects are free to worship as their conscious dictates without monetary repercussion.

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?
Allowed, but seriously frowned upon.
Same

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?
The Church is closely connected to the state. His Majesty's Government is responsible for promoting Church interests across the United Kingdom but priests from the Archbishop Ádien down are appointed by the government.
The Viceroy of Gallaga and all other members of the Five Presidencies are required to align with the King-Emperor's religion and help maintain missions in all unconverted areas; however, the touchy state of Gallagan politics often insures religious areas a less-than-prominent seat.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?
Royalists tend to hold up a slipping in mass attendance as one sign of the degradation of Bradsworth's government and the granting of Church property confiscated by the state during the Weshieldian Revolution is a major issue, but religion tends to play a minor role in politics overall.
The conflict between Hindu and Muslim dominates Gallagan politics.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?
The Christian faith is what separates 'proper Shieldians' from the 'unwashed heathens' of the Empire.
Religious reform, in large part, lead to the formation of Gallagan nationalism before the German-Chiangese War.

EDUCATION
Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?
Although free public education is offered to all subjects of the United Kingdom up to the age of eighteen, it is not compulsory.
Education in English and both religious and Shieldian law at missions is required between the ages of five and fifteen, although practical logistical issues often make such unworkable, especially in the hinterland.

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?
Education is free until the age of eighteen.
[i]Education is free until the age of fifteen

Does your government consider education to be a priority?
Education is considered a top priority by the United Kingdom.
Education is often secondary to economic and defense issues.

How would you best define university education in your nation?
Although the quality of education offered at institutions such as Royal Standard University in Ianapalis or the University of Gadsan in Lakeriverwood is superb, high fees and limited seats often make the best education only available to the upper classes.
Fort St. Mary's College in Nusheld and similar universities across Gallaga and the Empire tend to offer only education useful for positions in the Civil Service. Few Gallagans have the resources to send their children to topnotch schools on the Shield.

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS
To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?
Although the nationalization of IanCorp, the national press monopoly, has led to the proliferation of smaller media enterprises, IanCorp (operating under government control) still dominates with more than a 95% market share.
After martial law was declared in 1954, the only legal news has been from government sources such as IanCorp Gallaga.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?
Although there is no official censorship in the United Kingdom, all news released by IanCorp is first checked by government workers and, if deemed necessary, changed to better reflect the government's political and moral ideals.
All press is heavily censored, especially with regards to political message. Overtly pro-Shieldian pieces have often led to riots across Gallaga.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?
Somewhere between the two. The Government does not censor the independent press, but almost all consumable media is produced by publicly owned IanCorp.
The press under martial law exists solely to support the government.

Is the press entitled to criticize the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?
The independent press is free to print what it will. IanCorp, being government owned and operated, is not allowed to criticize the government.
Any papers which criticize the government are shut down as treasonous.

POLITICS
Is your nation's political system a multiparty one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?
All political parties are officially banned in the United Kingdom. Candidates run on an individual platform. However, most politicians tend to align themselves either with Charles Bradsworth’s moderate Gull Flag platform, Lawrence Madders’ radical Grand Street platform, or the Baron Destian’s reactionary Royalist platform.
The President of the New Shield, the President of Fort Ash, the President of St. Walburg, the President of Fort St. Peter, and the President of Fort Manly are appointed directly by the King-Emperor advised by the Gallaga Office and the National Assembly; each president then appoints a council to help govern his presidency.

What are the main political parties in your nation?
Officially, none. Unofficially, the Gull Flaggers (~56% of popular votes), the Royalists (~35%) and the Grand Streeters (~9%).
Not applicable.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?
No parties are allowed on the Shield. However, because the Gull Flag votes control both the Assembly and the Premiership, and thus IanCorp, the Gull Flag agenda receives the most national press coverage.
Only the government receives press coverage.

What are the major themes around which politics revolve in your nation?
Currently, hawks in the Gull Flag Party have whipped up support for a war against Effit at home and a ‘punitive action’ against the Maratha Confederacy in Gallaga. Other issues include national conscription, electoral reform, the role of the monarchy after the revolution, and the performance of the national hockey team.
Nearly all Gallagans, with a few exceptions among the ruling classes, wish to either completely sever ties with the United Kingdom or achieve a larger self-rule in the manner of the Dominions of the ancien régime. However, religious division between Hindus and Muslims prevents an effective unification against the Iansislean Raj. The government wishes to uphold Shieldian prestiege - which often includes violent repressions of mutinies and anti-Iansislean protests or punitive actions against non-Iansislean states within Gallaga - and continue to exploit Gallaga's natural and manpower resources for the benefit of the United Kingdom.

Ahh finally a tread worth considering...

The Rather Apathetic Neutralism of Podlasia:

RELIGION
What is the predominant religion in your nation?
There is no official predominant podlasian religion. Members of any cult are sent into rehabilitation and reeducation programmes, imprisoned, forced to do community work to pay for their "sins" or volunteered for the black marked...
Religious symbols are illegal, except in very special cases.
A small community of orthodox moslems are allowed to practice their beliefs as they have never attempted to interfere with governement policies, and make da*n good chefs.

Is there an official State religion in your nation?
We take the view that religion is a mean for suppressing the will to power of the individual. The state of Podlasia has an entire agency to do this suppressing based on the newest psychological studies, and see no need to revert to such outdates methods... so that's a clear NO!

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?
Not so much say...

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?
Allowed, but we laugh a lot at them.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?
Complete separation, most church-buildings having been demolished or turned into factory halls in the 13 years after the revolution. Attempts to start religious movements are meet with generous amounts of red-tape or, in case of some of the less pleasant cults, extreme force.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?
Yes. It's important to keep the two seperated.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?
18 years ago the people of Podlasia rose in general rebellion against the corrupt theocratic dictatorship. Keeping religion out is a prerequisite for participation in the process as the ruling classes define themselves by their lack of religious affilation.

EDUCATION
Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?
Yes, 15. There after education is offered for free...

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?
Yes. No limit up to and including university, open to all qualified without charge for all qualified institutions.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?
Since recently with the introduction of sweeping reforms...

How would you best define university education in your nation?
Rapidly growing and somewhat insecure in it's infancy, but mostly qualified, enthusiastic and meriting...

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS
To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?
The press can write or broadcast what it likes, but the boards and directors usually come and ask their glorious leaders if it's allright, aestetic enough, rhetorically pleasing and so on...
The paper Podlasia Tomorrow which had been running a series of critical articles on the development of dictatorship accidentally got incinerated during the testfiring the of Space Utility Programme, but that had nothing what-so-ever to do with the attitude of the articles in anyway.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?
There is no obligation but papers, programmes, radio broadcasts, power point presentations and so on are usually submitted for approval by the Podlasian Central Commisariat for Proper Communication, Propaganda & Language (PCCPCPL for short) who offer fast quality service for improved communications...

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?
Unfortunately most independant papers are rather small and has had to rally heavily on government funding during the last decade. We encourage them to be independant but regrettably, it's usually neccessary to run articles and adds in them to keep them going...

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?
Absolutely. As long as they keep a proper tone, restrain themselves from populist arguing, and don't mind discussing their attitudes with the Internal Security Forces, the Podlasian Secret Police, Podlasian's Bureau of Crime Investigation & Prevention, the Department of Policing, the Iron Skulls, the Crime Prevention Squad, the Pacifiers, the National Defense Service, the National Security Service, the National Intelligence Service, Central Planning, the NPC, the Quality Inspectorate, SJG, the 4th Armoured, the Communications Inspectorate, Central Cleaning, or the PCCPCPL.

POLITICS
Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?
We are lucky enough to have at our disposition for the running of this great nation the family of our exalted leader... we, the parliament, feel no other parties are necessary and have banned them as per RLD-13c.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?
What elections?

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?
* Industrial development: Podlasia has in the last decades developed from being a backwards farming country to be the leading industrial power in our region with a massive production boost over the last 20 years..
* Economic boosting: central to this growth has been the rapid expansion of Podlasias mismanaged infrastructure. We are proud to offer universal free public transportation, five new air hubs, the expansion of three major harbours and a complete restructuring of Podlasias road-network.
* Education: meeting the challenges of the post-industrialized world, Podlasia will invest heavily in education and research.
* Internal Security: the podlasian citizen has many duties but also many rights, one of which is the right to move around our great nation without suffering harm to their persons or belongings. The Podlasian Police will as previously be vigorously reinforced and shall clamp down on any violation of the law with the utmost efficiency.
* Secularism: refering to Podlasias past, keeping the state pure and uninfected by foul theological dogma is of the uttermost importance. Any attempts to reintroduce the old system shall be meet with maximal force.
* Defense: Podlasia has been the focal point of a series of wars in the past due to our political position. Any such future attempts shall forever and hence-forth be discouraged if necessary by force of arms... we shall continue the expansion of the Podlasian airforces, keep the army up-to-date and maintain our high level of training, while endeavouring to be amongst the leading nations on the new frontiers of defensive technology.
* Environment: it has come to Our attention, by the good work of Our most respected chef, that the Pied Nightinggale has been the reduced by the decreasing quality of Podlasias environment. So as to ensure Our dinner shall nolonger be two-headed we announce our intention to to better the environment and climate of Our beloved nation through any means possible...

There is no "offical" religon. However do to my colony's ever perservearing nature protection, we advocate Paganism more then anything else..

We are open to all ideas and philosophies. No good theory can withstand without acceptance of differance.

Ofcourse, athiesm is a scape goat because some people feel uncomfertable with the spiritual subject, when they are ready, they will come around.

Church and state is seperate in the sense that churches are personaly funded and the goverment plays no role in the construction or destruction of such things. We are not God and we don't try to be.

Spiritualism is very important to the colony of carbdown and it shows in our constant activity to keep our streets clean and our forests preserved..

Our nation's goverment does not enforce any sort of "code of conduct" for the press, the only exseption is if they were to encourage bringing harm to our goverment in some blunt fashion. Like giving instructions on how to construct a bomb.

Gran Cienaga operates under a two-party system although third parties are allowed.

The Frontier Party usually supports the lower-middle class, advocates laissez-faire policies as well (although it has advocated government intervention also) and desires the nation to grant statehood to areas in existing territories as well as annexing new territories.
One smaller yet significant party is the Unitarian Party, which calls for the abolition of the federal system of government in favor of a unitary one. Other parties do exist as well.

Various tidbits of information regarding your nation, and notably religion, education, and freedom of the press.

RELIGION

What is the predominant religion in your nation?

Roman Catholicism

Is there an official State religion in your nation?
Roman Catholicism

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?
Nobody is going around making sure that people are Roman Catholics, but, although technically legal, it is virtually impossible for anybody outside the Catholic clergy to obtain the proper permits to erect a religious building (in a nation of around three billion people, there isn't one official mosque outside of the embassies of Moslem countries).

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?
The state doesn't test religious belief, so certainly it is allowed.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?
The state's institutions are intertwined with those of the Church. Electorates in the Imperial Parliament are based around groups of parishes and bishoprics. The Church is the national electoral body, through the Pantocratorian Congregation for the Protection of the Creed. Voting takes place in Church buildings after Mass. The Emperor rules by the Grace of God.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?
Yes, it does on the conservative side.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?
Yes, to the bulk of Pantocratorians, religion is a defining part of the national character.

EDUCATION

Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?
Yes, education is compulsory to the age of 16.

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?
Yes, secular primary and secondary schooling is totally free. Secondary schooling is usually completed by the age of 17 or 18, unless the student has been held back a year.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?
The present Imperial Government considers it to be a major priority.

How would you best define university education in your nation?
Pantocratorian universities are of the world's highest standards, but have so far been fairly inaccessible because no government subsidisation has been available to pay tuition fees. The new Imperial Government intends to pay all tuition costs for university education in the long term, in order to make access to university education based on merit as opposed to the ability to pay. The limited number of university places currently available are all free, but only available to Pantocratoria's most promising students, and the Imperial Government is investing in increasing the number of university places.

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?

The press is completely free in Pantocratoria, although until recently that was not the case.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?

The press is now completely uncensored, although until recently the Ministry of Cultural Development censored press reports on political, moral, cultural, and religious grounds.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?

The press is independent, with both privately and publicly owned news outlets.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?

The press is entitled to criticise the Imperial Government as much as it wants.

POLITICS

Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?

Multi-party.

What are the main political parties in your nation?

The Pantocratorian Socialist Alliance holds 269 seats in the Imperial Parliament. It is the majority party of the coalition government, which also includes the Constantinople Party with 94 seats.

The opposition consists of the Loyal Christian Front (162 seats), and the Pantocratoria First Party (15 seats).

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?

As of late last year, all parties are free to take part in elections on whatever platform they wish. Citizens vote on a preferential basis, numbering all candidates for a seat in order of priority (if their first preference is eliminated, their vote goes to their second preference, and then to the third, and then to their fourth, etc).

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?

Political reform, healthcare and education are the primary themes of the Pantocratorian Socialist Alliance. Other issues of political debate include religion, law enforcement, foreign policy and defence spending. Linguistic politics played a large part at the last election - moves to recognise the minority language of Greek as a second official language, alongside French, but now that Greek has been made an official language again, it should no longer be a significant issue.

Sidestreamer
12-03-2005, 13:25
I am a professor from the Holy University of the Altogether from the Empire of Sidestreamer, and on condition of anonymity, I shall answer these questions:

RELIGION

What is the predominant religion in your nation?
Catholocism is the dominant religion, and only Catholics are allowed any ruling office in the Empire of Sidestreamer. Other religions include numerous protestant sects, Islam, and Bhuddism, with Judiasm practiced around the Isle of Jenova.

Is there an official State religion in your nation?
The official religion is Catholicism, but people can engage in other religions at their will. However they will be denied representation in government affairs as a result, and participation in these other religions has been, through unofficial channels, stifled, sometimes violently.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?
Non-Catholic religions have been cracked down upon by other forces, even though our government denies any involvement. Before joining the United Nations, Satanists in particular were "purified" through muratic acid plunges followed by the removal of one leg with a bow saw, before being castrated and then immolated if the Satanist was still alive. However, since UN bylaws forbid "cruel and unusual" punishment, they are now simply and summarily executed in gas chambers for treason. However, the nation is attempting to draft a proposal to repeal that bylaw so they can continue this "sacred rite."
Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?
Athiests are considered enemies of the state, even more so than non-catholic people of faith (the separatist Jews from the Isle of Jenova aside). Such peoples, the emperor fear, are prone to political disloyalty and disturbance. They are tracked very closely and often arrested for minor offenses usually ignored when others commit them.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?
Absolutely no separation, except arguably in the armed services, but even then, the only church at forts Caprice, Perdition, Wenderfell and Portished, as well as in the naval bases of Orca Bay and the Isle of Ishmael, are Catholic. There are rumors of a mosque operating in the Marine Fort Holwrath, but the soldiers are tight-lipped about such affairs and understandably so.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?
Loyalty to the Catholic god is loyalty to the Emperor Maximus IV, who is a direct descendent of Pope John Paul.

EDUCATION

Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?
Education is unfunded in the Empire of Sidestreamer, but inroads are being made to establish public, compulsory education starting at the age of 5, and it will be, obviously, Catholic in nature but also heavily emphasizing the hard sciences and Latin language/literature. (Latin is the official language of the government and no other language can be used in office, even though English is by far the most commonly used language of the public. Again, the heavy Catholic influence has to do with this).

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?
Not yet. See above.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?
It is a concern and government encourages (with a fair deal of success) the population to attend private schools, but the education system is only beginning to formulate. Catholic churches, which recieve a portion of all empire taxes, offer inexpensive schools for church attendees, and as our booming IT economy suggests, their science education has been remarkable.

How would you best define university education in your nation?
All 10 universities are private and, with the exception of the Jewish-based University of Emmanuel's Testament in the Isle of Jenova, all Catholic in affiliation. Emmanuel's Testament, however, has suffered frequent vandolisms, for reasons I'm sure you can guess.

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?
Not at all. All presses are state-ran and the one time a journalist attempted to expose a corrupt priest's opium ring, that reporter's torso was found in a field in the Isle of Mann, while his head was found by a trout fisher near Port Hampton, 25 miles away....

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?
The government and the Catholic church both censor the press, in equal degrees, and political and moral censorship is extreme and stifilng until only the past few years. Lately the government hasn't been quite as concerned with dissent and the strong racism expressed by Sidestreamer's exotic races against the struggling native population.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?
The news press is clearly a mouthpiece, although entertainment has been somewhat more liberated as of late.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?
See above. Government criticism is usually punished by imprisonment, but anyone who goes after high priests are in for a world of hurt... and actually it isn't the government cracking down on those dissenters most of the time.

POLITICS

Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?
Catholic rule.

What are the main political parties in your nation?
Catholicism. There is no real political parties in the Empire, although a union between protestants and the Jehova Jews is apparent in the struggles against the Catholics, while the Muslims tend to be opposed to everyone.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?
There are no elections at this point.

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?
Conservation of environment is a major concern, as well as the never-ending conflict between the Altogether (capital of the Empire) and the separatist Isle of Jenova. The current hot-button issue, however, is the controversial decision made by the Emperor to join the region known as the Militaristic Legions an Plans. Some high bishops have opposed the idea as one that might weaken the influence of the church in favor of corporate interests, but the emperor believes otherwise.

RELIGION

What is the predominant religion in your nation?A 'slightly' corrupted form of Roman Catholicism, with a comparatively fundamentalist 'core' and an excessively liberal 'average'. Various other options could take over the spot, but one will have to see for future developments.

Is there an official State religion in your nation?Hell, no.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?Short of cultists cutting off homeless people, everything's perfectly legal/ normal, although there are some beefs with both, christianity (Especially 'normal' Roman Catholicism) and islam, but nothing that cannot casually be regarding as being 'A thing of the past'.

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory? It's common.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?Theoretically, yes. Practically, no. Aforementioned 'Fundamentalists' (For DA standards. Elsewhere, they would prolly go through as rather liberal) from aforementioned 'corrupted' Roman Catholicism have quite a bit of political influence, so do newer groups, the somewhat erratic 'Tech Faith' as well as certain groups based on a slight bit of mysticism.

The 'Relation' is no different that any other 'relation' with regards to domestic politics: Full of conflicts.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?Yes, though not in the sense one would usually define it.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity? No.

EDUCATION

Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?Yes. Ninth grade/ 14/15 years of age. Under normal circumstances, basically everyone is continuing until 12th grade/ 17/18 years of age, with the majority of them continuing further to university, though. Yay for 139th in the world for smartest citizens.

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?It is privatised, so, no. However, corporations, including the ones that 'run' the nation (They can be defined as a 'Court Corporation', though this is a somewhat limiting term, with regards to their actual roles) do usually sponsor schools to guarantee a basic (high) level, upon which details are worked out with the money the parents/ children pay, resulting in minor specialisation.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?Yes. The priority.

How would you best define university education in your nation?Near perfect?

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?'Extreme.'

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?None whatsoever. The government is incapable of censoring anything, simply because the mere attempt would spark a revolution.

However, inside private organisations/ corporations, censorship is, of course, apossibility, but extremely uncommon, seeing as it is somewhat pointless to enforce censorship when your neighbor across the street doesn't have the same enforcements.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?Depends on the publisher. All three options exist, although it might be noted that due to both, the diversity of opinions, as well as the lack of censorship,as well as the generally extreme level of education, conventional propaganda simply isn't done (According to Gustave Le Bon, it should still work, but...). Instead, the means of satire, sarcasm, cynism and the likes are used to work as propaganda tools. Of course, they are recognised as such, and given this, work more to reinforce existing opinions, rather than to change them.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?Yes. This does explicitly include 'Mouthpieces' of the 'Government'. It is more or less impossible to be taken seriously if you're not capable of finding/ admitting/ bashing your own faults. Cultural thing.

As for the degree... There's no limit.

POLITICS

Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?A mixture of Oligarchy, technocracy, Meritocracy, Plutocracy... Hasd a piece of everything, really, and works... Actually, how it works is the topic for sPoliSci Doctoral thesis. But so far, nobody knows how it works. Which is to say, the system is unworkable, IRL. But I like it, anyway.

What are the main political parties in your nation? There are no strict 'Parties'. There are factions. And currently, they're shooting at each other... As such, it is hard to give out this information, as the current situation is somewhat... Complex and not entirely clear.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?E-LEC-TION? What an odd idea... The ones most capable at backstabbing their competition manage to rule the nation, it's as simple as that. Granted, it results in occasional outbursts of violence, but...

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?1. End the civil war. 2. Reestablish the connection between the mainland and the other territories on earth 3. Negotiate deals with the off- world colonies wanting independence. 4. HOW THE FUCK did 70% of the nation just drop dead in a single moment? We should never have tinkered with telepathy...

- Yes, Goblinism is the predominant religion of the State, although not many outsiders know much more than that it's a wierd religion for Goblins.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?
- Plenty, religion is not something of great interest to the vast majority of the Nebula Goblins although most adhere to the general principles of Goblinism (probably because it does not require much)

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?
- Allowed

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?

- Not particularly

- Depends upon the Duchy/World in question

- Almost totally, there are a few exceptions (such as that it is illegal for newspapers to advertise cheese products or certain non-alcoholic drinks, and that it is a legal requirement for all newspaper editions to print at least one advert in each paper for an alcoholic drink) but mostly they can print what they want (stopping short of encouraging outright rioting, although most Goblins admire the King and his government anyway).

- Cunnin'un Goblins employed by the King go through the papers before publication to ensure various limitations and legal requirements.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?
- Anything short of encouraging riots or portraying insulting images or phrases (criticism is fine, but the King outlawed insults after his mother was insulted). Penalties mostly depend upon the whim of the King.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?
- Goblins are free to vote for appointees to their Grand Council

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?

The press can call the President of Czardas an idiot, a debacle, and a lazy, clumsy oaf, and get away with it.

Federal Democratic Party (right-wing) -- 108 seats
Libertarian Expansionist Party (libertarian) -- 48 seats
Regressive Progressive Party (centrist) -- 22 seats
Socialist Party -- 7 seats
Independent -- 2 seats

In the past, the LEP tended to dominate all the others, with the PCP occasionally winning a few seats. However, it fell out of favor when its interventionist policies resulted in trade sanctions by other nations.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?
As Czardas is a direct democracy, all of these parties are represented in numbers by the citizens of Czardas. Citizens may elect any of these to public office, but many go with one of the major parties (PCP or FDP) in voting on the laws proposed by the Council of 400.

Clarksingtonland

The Great Reduccial Empire of Clarksingtonland responds to the aformentioned questions:

Religion

Most of the Reduccial Empire is Episcopalian, around 55%. However, there are large numbers of Muslims, Catholics and various other religions. Christianity is the most prominant base-rel.

There is no offical religion. The Reduccila Empire's republican form of democracy arised out of a fight with tryanny and so religious freedom is highly held dear. Any member of the Magistracoetus (legaslative assembly) who proposes such bills is immedialtly suspened from office.

Aethisism is allowed but not practiced widely.

The Church and State are totaly separate in Clarksingtonland. This is firmly imdeded in our Constitution. However, there are services for dead leaders and generals given at our National Cathedral and such but nothing more than that.

Relgion plays a small part in our national identiy; an even smaller part in politics.

Education

Education is neither compulsory nor free here; however it is a major priority for the Goverment. Our schools are well-funded and our universities allow students great opurrtunities to grow and learn. We are very proud.

Press

The press is allowed complete freedom. However, whenever it makes racisist, immoral or remarks that simply go over the line, punishment is given.

RELIGION
What is the predominant religion in your nation?

There really isn't one. Deism is pretty popular, but it's really a rather even distribution.

Is there an official State religion in your nation?

Nope.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?

Pretty much total freedom. Unless you're trying to summon your god/demon/other to cause trouble. Human sacrifices are frowned upon, however.

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?

Allowed.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?

Not much of a "state" to speak of. There's pretty much total separation, but not enforced separation. People largely don't care, truth be told.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?

Nope. Might guide individual people, but, again, there's not much politicking.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?

Not really.

EDUCATION
Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?

Not much of anything is compulsory.

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?

Yes and no. The government (such as it is) supports education, but most schools are run by private businesses. Generally free to children of employees or free if the student agrees to work for the corporation for $time after graduation.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?

Very much so. It's about the only thing the Oligarchy strongly supports.

How would you best define university education in your nation?

Intensive. While it is optional, it's a good idea to go, and the standards are pretty high.

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS
To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?

Totally and completely.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?

Censorship-by-compitition. Hackers have nearly unlimited options for their news. For a newswire to survive, it has to work at it. Successful outlets tend to survive by giving fluff that people want (ie: North Hack News); insanely accurate and unbiased reporting (Chiba City News), or by being the only game in town (The Hali Tribune).

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?

Fully independant. Some outlets are little more than duckspeakers for their corporate sponsers, but those tend to not be very successful.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?

Again, they can say pretty much whatever they want. North Hack News has been known to make stuff up.

They've also been known to have their offices firebombed, so...

POLITICS
Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?

"Something else".

It used to be a (sort of) multi-party system, but only one party ever won (think Mexico without the corruption). Then it became, essentially, a dictatorship. Now it's an "enlightened anarchy", with policy decisions made by "The Oligarchy". In reality, two people (Nominal Head Dr. Josef Specter and Speaker for the Oligarchy Elisa Day) make most of the choices when one needs to be made.

It's, um... kinda confusing, really.

What are the main political parties in your nation?

n/a

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?

n/a

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?

'Terminal apathy'. Most citizens have a "don't screw with me, I won't screw with you" view towards the government. Roughly 60% of the population isn't even aware that they've lost the ability to vote (10% of them didn't know they had it in the first place).

On an extremely local level people have a great deal of opportunity for voting and such. However, since the bulk of the population is in two megalopolises, "extremely local" tends to mean "within the same building". And, well, most people just don't bother anyway.

And, technically, GMC's Supreme Commander can override any laws in the Hack, create his own laws, etc. etc. but that would be far too ham-fisted and would probably actually piss off the citizens. It'd be much easier to simply nudge The Oligarchy in the direction he wants things to go.

The Eternal Kawaii welcomes this offer to discuss Our way of life with the outside world.

What is the predominant religion in your nation?

The sole religion in Our nation is the Holy Otaku Church of the Eternal Kawaii.

Yes, see above.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?

We are proud to say that Our citizenry have embraced their religion with 100% fidelity.

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?

Atheism is considered ecchi and harmful to the serenity of Our people. It is not tolerated.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?

In the Eternal Kawaii, the Church IS the State.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?

Politics is not practiced in the Eternal Kawaii. Like atheism, it is considered ecchi.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?

One could say that it is Our national identity.

EDUCATION

Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?

Does your government consider education to be a priority?

How would you best define university education in your nation?

Our nation is still in the process of creating a formal education policy, so We ask for your indulgence in letting Us pass on these questions for the moment.

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?

The press in the Eternal Kawaii participates freely in the life of Our church through presenting items of cuteness for the benefit of Our followers.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?

As faithful members of Our church, the press does not wish to disturb the happiness of the citizenry of the Eternal Kawaii by presenting ecchi material, and thus avoids it.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?

The press in the Eternal Kawaii is privately owned. The examples mentioned above are a testimony to their fidelity to their beliefs.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?

We find this question illogical. Why would faithful members of Our church criticize it?

POLITICS

Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?

As mentioned above, politics are considered ecchi. We have observed political parties to be divisive forces that spread unhappiness in contradiction to Our church's doctrine, therefore they are not permitted.

What are the main political parties in your nation?

None, see above.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?

See above.

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?

See above.

Most religions have a good relationship with the government, and the two activly work together to help the citizens everywhere.

RELIGION

What is the predominant religion in your nation?

None. There is a mix of Islamic and Deists who hold the most sway – and a general absence of Christianity save Lutheranism and Russian Orthodoxy – but no religion predominates.

Is there an official State religion in your nation?

None.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?

Absolute. We even have Voodun.

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?

Allowed.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?

Church in any form has little power at all – Vastiva taxes churches as they do any business, they are only exempt from the “mandatory 50% ownership” clause because the Sultan is not in competition with any deity. However, we do review their books closely.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?

No role.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?

No.

EDUCATION

Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?

Yes, by UN resolution to 18.

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?

Yes, by UN resolution to 18.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?

Third highest.

How would you best define university education in your nation?

This occurs during the period of conscription, and is a mix of education and service, preparing the individual for their eventual career path.

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?

Very, though the State runs a press service.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?

If there is any censorship, it is “polite” – as in “the Sultan requests you do not discuss x”. This is a relatively rare occurrence. All news has an added protection, that of “release” – if the Heralds discussed it, it is considered fair game.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?

Most press is free. The government has the Heralds, a newspaper, and a cable news channel.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?

Openly and loudly, and they usually do, though most criticism is about the lower levels (Beys and Pashas).

POLITICS

Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?

Depends on what level you mean. On the lowest level (Beys), it is free game. Higher, it becomes a meritocracy, run ultimately by the Sultan, who is above the law.

What are the main political parties in your nation?

At the democratic lowest level, there are too many to list.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?

Yep.

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?

Bitching. No, really, that’s it. People bitch about what they want, politicians at the lower levels make promises and fulfill them or don’t. It’s a dogpit.

Higher up, it functions as a business.

Questions welcome.

Yuunli
30-04-2005, 08:00
The Republic of Yuunli (member of the International Democratic Union) has yet to publish more information about its internal affairs...

OOC: I'm still developping some of the stuff asked here.

> What is the predominant religion in your nation?
40% follow a monotheist religion that only exists in Yuunli, 29% are atheists, 31% follow various other religions.

> Is there an official State religion in your nation?
No.

> To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?
Religious freedom is as strong as freedom of speech and the right of assembly. Civil rights are well respected in Yuunli.

> Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?
It's allowed, just like religions. Education is non-religious, thus atheistic.

> Is there a separation between the Church and the State?
Very strict.

> How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?
The state doesn't care about its citizens' faith. Churches are treated as organizations founded by citizens. They are free to do whatever they like (within the framework of the constitution), but they get no tax money.

> Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?
No. There is one political party that would like to change the situation, but they don't get many votes.

> Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?
No. It was only recently that the people of Yuunli realized some nations make religions something public or even have state religions. Maybe that shock reflects the national identity: The people of Yuunli believe religion should be private, not public.

> Is education compulsory in your nation?
Yes.

> If so, to what age?
That has not been published yet.

> Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?
I think it is, but I'll have to check...

> To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?
The press can write whatever they like, as long as they don't violate the constitution. The press is very free in Yuunli.

> Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?
The press is independent. Except for the bulletins published by ministries and parliament. But they only inform about what the goverment/parliament does.

> Is the press entitled to criticise the government?
Yes.

> Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?
It's a multi-party system. The most influential party has about 20% of the seats in parliament. But I can't give you exact figures before the elections.

> What are the main political parties in your nation?
In approximately decreasing order (the order might differ from province to province):

SLL (Safe Life Lobby): protectionist
FCP (Free Citizens Party): libertarian
YAP (Yuunli Against Poverty): socialist
FTP (Free Trade Party): capitalist
PYN (Protect Yuunli's Nature): environmentalist
MFN (Movement for Family and Neighborhood): conservative
GVC (God's Values Count): religious

> Are all these parties free to take part in elections?
Yes.

> Are they free to express themselves?
Yes. As long as they don't call on people to kill anyone.

> May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?
Yes.

> What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?
I haven't fixed that yet...

RELIGION

What is the predominant religion in your nation?

Atheism and Cadoism - a religion focused on the liberation of the oppressed and respect for all sentient beings.

Some 42% of the population are atheists, some 40% Cadoists. The remaining 8% are a wide mixture.

Is there an official State religion in your nation?

No. The atheists would scream.

To what degree would you say there is religious freedom in your nation?

To a very high degree; no one is stopped from practicing their religion, no one is ever obligated to say their religion, none of the political positions require religious or even theistic oaths.

Is atheism allowed? Banned? Compulsory?

It's allowed, and it flourishes.

Is there a separation between the Church and the State? To what degree? How would you define the relation between Church and State in your nation?

The government makes no mention of God or religion in its policies. That said, the Cadoists are religiously obligated to participate in politics, and their views of morality have a very strong influence on what kind of policies go through.

Does religion play an important part in politics in your nation?

It is essential. Most of the political parties, while all are obstentially secular, have main voting bases in either the atheist or the Cadoist camp.

Does it play an important part in terms of national identity?

No.

EDUCATION

Is education compulsory in your nation? If so, to what age?

Education is compulsory until the end of the school year in which the student turns 17.

Is education free in your nation? If so, to what age?

All educational facilities are free.

Does your government consider education to be a priority?

A very high priority, mainly because there is very little debate about it.

How would you best define university education in your nation?

Universal. Almost everyone attends.

The structure is rather loose, but the system is extremely effective. There are a very wide variety of choices.

FREEDOM OF THE PRESS

To what degree would you say the press is free in your nation?

In terms of dissenting political views, completely. Newspapers that do NOT criticize the government harshly are thought of as cowardly, and quickly lose buyers.

To what degree is the press submitted to censorship? If any, is censorship carried out by the government, or by some other form? Is censorship political, moral, other?

There is censorship, which is a major matter of debate. It applies solely to pornography and violence.

Is the press independent in your nation, or is it a mouthpiece for government propaganda? Or somewhere between the two?

Publicly-funded, but independent in content.

Is the press entitled to criticise the government? If so, to what degree? If not, what are the penalties for doing so?

The press is free to criticize the government to any degree. Even threats, death wishes, etc. are permitted, though they are seen to be in very bad taste. Incitement to revolution is officially illegal, but if anyone enforced it they'd be attacked as authoritarian.

POLITICS

Is your nation's political system a multi-party one? a two party system? a single party one? or something else?

It's a multi-party democracy. There are hundreds of parties, but only forty-two have seats in Parliament.

What are the main political parties in your nation?

The Democratic Socialist Party - a left-wing party with strong Cadoist influences, pro-government intervention.

The Socialist Labor Party - the party of "grass-roots socialism," advocating more focus on the socialist workers' organizations and smaller government. Mostly Cadoist, but the percentages are far closer than most of the others.

The New Marxist Party - a strongly leftist party with an atheistic and libertarian bent.

The Democratic Progressive Party - far from conservative by most nation's standards, this is a center-right party in Waliwan, and it is mostly atheist.

The Libertarian Party - unlike most libertarian parties, this party concerns itself mainly with cultural issues, focusing on eliminating gun control and getting rid of all censorship. Atheist.

Are all these parties free to take part in elections? Are they free to express themselves? May citizens vote for any party of their choosing?

Yes, yes, and yes.

What are the major themes that politics revolve around in your nation?

The population is strongly in favor, more or less, of the current economic policies, but there is considerable debate over how far to take the welfare state and how many roles the socialist workers' organizations should adopt instead of the government.

Government censorship of the media is a major topic for debate; some, such as the Libertarian Party and the New Marxist Party, support eliminating it entirely, while others, such as the Democratic Socialist Party, thinks it permits too much trash.

The right to die is another major issue. While most agree that severely sick people should have the option, many atheists advocate extending it to all adults, or at least those adults who can prove that they are suffering to a certain degree, while most Cadoists are angered at the idea of the destruction of human life, willing or not.

Gun control is also a major topic.
