We are exceedingly angry about our poor showing in CC IX - and intend to improve our posture by participating in CC X, or become angrier still.
Note: Otto Matic has been forgiven by The Armed Republic of Very Angry Rabbits, and is expected to lead the Artic Hares into battle. He has promised to return if (and the team found this a little odd, but...) they will forward to him the rabbit suit found during the investigation of his recent hasty departure.

Kalaallit Nunaat

wow, many sign-ups. and many bids to host. cool.
Sjwitz, and anyone else wondering: the format on hosting is pretty loose. it has been done a number of ways by the 8 previous hosts. but in brief: check how many countries have entered. divide them into groups and devise whatever playoff format seems appopriate (make sure that 8 or 16 teams make the playoffs, so it works out evenly).
generate the results based on random numbers with a rank modifier (and, if you like, a role-play bonus as used by Oliverry this Cup for the first time. this is not comulsory and some people don't like role-play bonus, so this is up to the hosts). you can generate the results with dice, random number generation, or a spread sheet. previous hosts are usually happy to share the spread sheets they used. i'm also happy to share the score generation method used in the very early Cups, which used random.org rather than a spread sheet. for future Cups, i recommend that hosts ask someone else to generate their playoff results.
rank is currently determined by the place finished in the last Cup: Oliverry is ranked number one and so on. this is not carved in stone, but we try to keep things simple and concentrate on having fun. some people call this the cherry cup philosophy. in the cherry cup thread, post role-plays, either about hockey or whatever peripheral events seem appropriate. role-play is not required. personally, i only post occasionally and most of my posts consist of tongue-in-cheek death threats against other countries. whatever floats your boat is ok, as long as it's done in a friendly spirit. out-of-character arguments about the rules and bitching at each other should be confined to the "cherry chatter" thread in order to maintain the fun-loving wackiness of it all in the role-play/scores thread.
in order to avoid the extremes of enormous committee votes or dictatorship, host selection is done by three countries: the current host, the previous host and the founder (me). that means that voting on who hosts this Cup is done by Oliverry, Iansisle and Kalaallit Nunaat. once the host is chosen, s/he should make a new thread for the Cup and link to it from the sign-up thread, so idiots like me can find it.
here endeth the lesson.

The Cassowaries will be there, in body if not necessarily in mind.
In fact, i think it may be time to make a bid to host something again, especially since everyone else is doing it. How does Cherry Cup 10 in the tropical sun sound? Free beer for all comers.
edit to add: For the benefit of the industrious list-making rabbits, Cassowary colours are the same as our national flag. Yellow for Father Sun. Black for the soil of the motherland. Red for the blood of the patriots, shed to free the motherland from colonialism. And for tomato sauce. But mainly the blood of the patriots.

I haven't decided yet, but the Cassowaries may wear little ballerina tutus to play this tournament. If so, they'll still be in the national colours.
Stout Lout Breweries is also pleased to announce that it has offered the vast sums required to maintain a frozen ice surface in the tropics, ensuring adequate sponsorship for the enrmous costs of keeping rinks as solid ice throughout the tournament, if Tanah Burung wins hosting rights. At least, we think the ice surfaces will remain frozen. All statements guaranteed to be accurate to within three degree, 19 times out of 20. Probably. If the ice melts, we're hoping everyone will be too drunk to notice.
Stout Lout is also pleased to announce the release of Cherry Cup Ale, dyed a nice shade of pale red. Each can comes with its own visor. Just for the sake of pissing off Mr. Cherry.
This announcement brought to you by Stout Lout Raspberry Wheat Ale: When you just can't be boethed to get off your ass and buy something better, there's always some Raspberry Wheat in the back of the fridge.

Tanah Burung
10-03-2005, 04:43
OK. Tanah Burung bid details:
- We're already past 24 entries. The format would depend on how many we end up with, but i'm assuming 30. I would keep the two-conference system, and divide each conference into three 5-team divisions for a total of 6 divisions.
- Each team plays four matches, top 8 in each conference qualify and play down to finals.
- Score generation by a modified version of the system used in the other major tournament i hosted, which was World Cup 5. (Yeah, i'm a fossil.) It's mostly random, with a rank modifier and no role-play bonus. (For math whizzes, ten attacks per team, each generating a random number from 1 to 1000, resulting in a goal if the number is higher than the opponent's defence number. The defence number is 850 - (rank * 3). I'll run a few tests to make sure this gets realistic scores and possibly modify this. It gives a 10% advantage to the number one team over new players, which seems about right, bit should give higher scores than it did for soccer/football.)
- No overtime in group stages, only in playoff matches.
- I'll attempt to offer some local flavour and not take things too seriously. My beer sponsorship post above is the sort of tone i'm talking about.

Chicanada Bid Proposal
*see, we have a logo and everything*
- As we are past 24 entries, no problem. We are proposing small group play. For 26-30 teams, there will be 6 groups of 4 or 5 in six cities throughout Chicanada with the top two teams from each moving on to the final knockout round. Should we get to 32 or beyond, there will be 8 groups of 4 (or so, more or less) playing in eight cities of Chicanada and the top two will advance to the knockout round. See the site map (http://img72.exs.cx/img72/8651/cherrycupsites7sk.jpg) for hosting sites in Chicanada. Semifinals and Finals will be held in the capital Cana and it's suburbs so teams can experience all of Chicanada rather than our very shiny capital. The final will be held outside at the largets football pitch in Chicanada, the 115,000 seat TroutCo Field.
- Teams would play 3 or 4 matches (more if more than 32 teams compete).
- I will be using the greatest scorinator ever made: ESPN NHL 2K5. I was planing on using Leagion but my Java has decided to not cooperate so I shall utilize the best of video game technology. Since I'm a bad judge of good or bad role plays, there is no role play bonus but there will be a rank modifier to keep scores fair and represenative of the teams.
- Wins = 3 points. Ties = 2 ponts. Overtime Losses = 1 point. Losses = 0 points. Matches run for three periods of 20 minutes with a 10 minute Overtime period should the match be tied. If the tie is not broken after OT, then two points for each. In the knockout round, Overtime will go in 10 minute intervals until the tie is broken
- As was presented in Cherry Chatter, our layout for the knockout stage:
Final 12:
Round 1
1A 5th Best #1 v 6th Best #2 (Rosa City)
1B 6th Best #1 v 5th Best #2 (Jaxx)
1C 1st Best #2 v 4th Best #2 (Acadia)

QUESTION FOR KN, IAN, OLIVE
My understanding of how this works is a bit limited, but I gather you three (as CC Creator and past 2 hosts) will be selecting the host for CC X.
The question is - are sign-ups to be limited to a certain number, or is it open ended until we get started?
Kalaallit Nunaat
10-03-2005, 17:06
it's never been limited before. the exact cut-off number will be up to the host, and we should have a decision on who that is today.
although they aren't in this thread, i believe Liverpool England and Vilita have posted the broad outlines of their bids previously. thanks to all for the great ideas! i think the last Cup was great, and this one looks like it will be a blast no matter who hosts.

A Bounty Hunty, hired by The Armed Republic of Very Angry Rabbits to seach high and low in an effort to present all bid materials in the interest of fair play, was able to find this, which it is believed may be an artifact relating to Vilita's Bid to Host Cherry Cup X:
Anyway, I was thinking while resting just now about a possible format
What does everyone think of this idea
We have a double elimination knockout tournament (you get put into a playoff bracket, if you lose you go to the losers bracket, if you lose in that, you are out) of course the last two teams, the winner of the original bracket and the winner of the losers bracket playoff for the cherry cup. The winner would only have to win once, the loser would have to win twice to lift the cup.
Of course you say "well some teams will only play two games then!"
not so, prior to the bracket stage, there will be a group stage. However, All teams will advance to the knockout stage, regardless of their group finish. For example, if there were 8 groups of 4, say, play each other just once, the top 2 teams get byes into future rounds of the bracket, while the bottom 2 in each group start out in the first round of the bracket.
So, does that make sense to anyone, and if it does, is it any good?
EDIT: If it's too complex, of course, it can just be a single elimination tournament :P the point is putting the emphasis on head to head knockout matches instead of group play!Meanwhile, Otto Matic (having returned from his sabatical), was cleaning up his office, and under a pile of otherwise nondescript papers found a memo from the Liverpool England Ice Hockey Association that Otto believes relates to the LE Bid to Host Cherry Cup X:
Liverpool England Bid for CCX
-12 to 24 teams

Lovisa - "Polish Bisons" colors are dark blue, white and blueIf you don't mind us asking, the Artic Hares are very curious - who polishes the bison? Do the bison object to being polished?
;)
Corneliu
10-03-2005, 18:28
Corneliu has very interesting scenery. We will give them free access to all the famous tourist sites in Featherston City. All participants will receive half off any and all purchases and 1/4 off all food purchases.
As for the tournament itself, it'll be played at the four main hockey arenas through Featherston City. They have a seating capacity of 25,000 and they are the most modern arenas.
The tournament will have 2 divisions of 13 teams each with the top 8 teams from each division making it into a single elimination, winner take all format. The 1st place team in division 1 will play the 8 seeded team out of the 2nd division.
The playoff format will have 16 teams and be spread out among the 4 stadiums. The elite 8 will be played at two arenas and the Final Four and Title Game will be played at Featherston Arena, the home of the Featherston Braves of the Colonial Hockey League.

sorry...it was a poor joke (a sad little pun, really) based on the fact that there are two words in english spelled "polish"
Polish: meaning something from or having to do with Poland
and
polish: meaning to shine something, often with wax, such as shoes

I appreciated it, VAR.
Of course, if you should talk to Tanah Burung, you'll find that most people try to keep their jokes from being appreciated by me. ;)

(now, if only Lovisa's team name was "Polish Buffalo" instead of "Polish Bison", we could have done something with "buff-alo" and "buff-oon"...alas, it's not to be)
Does this mean Vilita is withdrawing its bid to host CC X? ;)
Nah, I just won't be placing a proper 'bid' this time, in the name of the cup :P
Would be cool to see TB host it, tbh.

VARIETY
very angry rabbits ice entertainment topical - yearly
"What more could we ask for?" asks Otto Matic, Director of Operations for the Artic Hares. "Free Beer? Cassowaries in tutus? Lush tropical forest settings? A ninety-five percent chance the ice wont melt? We're there."
With that, the Artic Hares, the Ice Hockey team that represents The Armed Republic of Very Angry Rabbits, set off for Tanah Burung.
We here at VARIETY applaud his decisive action,. We admire his "go for it" attitude. We support his "actions speak louder than words" actions. We also like his choice in sports jackets, but that's another issue.
And, should the Artic Hares show up in Tanah Burung, only to find out a different venue has been selected to host Cherry Cup X, we will disavow any knowledge of - what's 'is name - Otto? Or the - uh - Artic Hares?
