An Achilles class Battleship floated in the void of Space. The Achilles, actually. The first of its kind. The first Battleship constructed by the Klonor Empire. Now the oldest ship still in service, excepting only the Colossus and the New Dawn 03. As such it was a perfect for fit for its current mission.
Next to the Achilles floated the ASB Tempest, an Iroquois class Battleship. An unremarkable ship indistinguishable from the rest of its class, its only role here was as the target. With the most armor of any mass produced ship the Iroquois line could take a beating that would even have the Colossus drifting afterwards. This beating would probably leave the Colossus a dead hulk if it was in the Tempests place.
"We are powering the focusing cores now, sir. We expect to reach critical mass in under ten seconds. Ion rod insertion beginning......now. The enhancements are now on-line, sir."
"The Beam Cannons?"
"Charged and ready."
"Very well, begin the test. Begin with one Cannon, lets see how the Tempest can take it."
"Yes, sir. Firing now."

The crew of the Achilles watched in shock and horror as the single Beam Cannon tore through the shields, the armor on both sides of the hull, and everything in between as if going through wet tissue paper.
"Jesus....."
"Hot damn....."
"Holy shit!"
"Lieutenant, mark down that Test One is complete and a startling success. Test Two.....uh......we are unable to proceed to Test Two, Three, or Four. Target has been destroyed. I repeat, target has been destroyed. After one shot....."
"The report has been ammended, sir."
"Good, now. Take us back into dock. They were half expecting us to blow up during this trip and I want to get off this boat before it does."
"Sir? Engineering reports that the focusing went off without a hitch....."
"Yeah, and that's what they said when the Nexus technology was first revealed, too. This ship's expendable and I want off as soon as possible. We've finished the testing and there's no reason to stay around here any more. Get us to the dock."
"Yes, sir. We are underway."
The Achilles began to accelerate and made the jump to Sub-Space almost instantaneously. Several kilometeres beyond it hung another vessel, this one a tiny Elysium class Transport. Aboard it the collected Admirals continued to stare as they had since the test firing.
"One shot......one shot took down a freaking Iroquois!"
"There didn't register any more energy being drawn than a normal shot....imagine if we started equipping our Dreadnoughts with these!"
Slowly the murmering died down and the men just stared out the window at the reckage of the Tempest.
"One shot....."
OOC: In case you somehow missed it, this post is revealing a massive upgrade to the standard Beam Cannon, Klonors primary Capital Ship weaponry. Expect to see it in the field quite soon. ;)
