GRIFFINS AWAIT DRAW
Yvonne Trevor reports
The Druida Griffins hockey fans were awaiting their draw for the twelfth incarnation of their World Cup in South Osettia. After having only one World Cup in the last 30 years or so, they're incredibly eager to know just who they'll be up against. If they've got a chance, we don't know. We'd be fools to say they haven't but also if we said that they'll storm it.
Who are they? We don't even know yet. It could be just about anyone. There is no Druidan hockey league or anything, so we'll just have to wait and see who turns up. Indeed, that is an idea being considered, any eleven people turning up with an official Druidan passport cn play for us, no matter what the ability. However, if an actual squad is announced, Daily Druid readers will be the first to know.

Kazakhstania Drawn in Tough Group
Kzakhstania was today drawn in a very tough group, agaisnt such well known names as Liverpool England and Cockbill Street. The team has yet to be drawn, but undoubtedly will be, as we progress to the first round!

No worries, I'm sure nations like HC and Kaz will do fine.

Sarzonia Streaks
(Starters in BOLD)
Coach: Chris Marchment
GOALKEEPERS:
1 Dave Finney (Castleton College, Bausch): This 20 year old won the starting job with his catlike reflexes and his quickness in the cage. His inexperience may prove costly.
30 Ben Hanna (New Jerusalem Jurors, semipro): On the verge of retirement until the national team came calling, may still earn some playing time at 36 years old with his 13 years of semipro experience.
BACKS:
2 Kevin Faulkner (Woodstock City College): Led all defenders in minutes played in the top college league for three straight years. Only an ankle injury his freshman year kept him out of the lineup all four years. At 23 years old, he's expected to have a bright future ahead of him.
4 Bill Houlder (New Daurmont Dragons, semipro): Only took up field hockey his senior year of high school but scored two goals and added one assist in limited playing time. At 25 years old, he's not as experienced as some younger field hockey players on the team.
5 Casey Johnson (Ravenna Rollers): A mainstay behind the first professional team in Sarzonia, he usually has marking responsibilities for the opposing team's top forwards. At 30 years old, he is the team captain for his club team and for the national team.
8 Cal Thompson (Portland Pride): This 27 year old has been playing field hockey since he could pick up a stick. Has great offensive capabilities and often shifts into more of an attacking midfield role when Marchment sends in a defensive player late in the match.
9 Ken Harvey (University of Somerset): This junior has a lot of pure speed, and is improving defensively, so Marchment will look to give this 22 year old some more experience.
11 Ben Adams (Benatar State College): A junior, Adams often shuts down opposing forwards and attacking midfielders, but at 21 years old, he needs more experience before Marchment will try him against internationals.
MIDFIELDERS:
7 Jonathan Candele (University of New Isselmere): This 22 year old set a team record for assists in a season with 19 and added four goals two years ago. He is good at distributing the ball, but is lax defensively at times.
10 Brad Ritchie (Rypien Rockers): At 27 years old, one of only six players 25 and over. He will be looked upon to provide some steadying leadership for the team since he has been a team captain on his team before. He is known for being aggressive defensively and has spent a lot of time in the penalty box.
12 Jordan Diehl (Woodstock Wizards, semipro): Diehl is known for a deadly accurate left-handed shot from the wings, but struggles in the middle or as a right sided midfielder. Probably the best all-around player on the team. 25 years old.
13 Quentin Barker (Townshend Community College): Just out of high school, the 19 year old earned a starting position on the team by playing heads-and shoulders above the other midfielders in his spot. He has some of the best offensive moves of anyone on the team and the hardest shot on the team. Scored a school record 29 goals for Townshend.
14 Hayden Jeffries (Cooke State University): Jeffries was the overwhelming favorite to start at right midfield until Barker beat him out. He took his demotion well, supporting Barker and the rest of the team and will likely be the first player off the bench for Marchment. At 23 years old, still has improvement ahead of him.
15 Carson Manchester (Saugerties Silver Strike, semipro): The 22 year old elected not to go to a four year university and signed with the Silver Strike after community college. He may go in to play midfield if Marchment sends Barker to join the attack.
FORWARDS
3 Jody Johansson (Nicksia Guides, semipro): Scored a league leading 18 goals in the short season league the Guides play in. As a pure striker, needs service from a playmaking midfielder to be effective. 25 years old.
16 Cory Denton (Rypien): Can serve as distributing midfielder in a pinch, but is better suited to playing up front since defense is not his strong suit. At 22 years old, decided to forego college for a semi-pro career.
17 Paul Linden (Saugerties): Tremendous bench player, but struggles when he starts up front. Scored eight goals in a reserve role for the Silver Strike. At 23 years old, trying to improve his standing on the team.
18 Jake Lamar (Woodstock): Can play either midfield or forward, but with a shortage of pure forwards, he is on the roster in that position. At 24, expected to challenge for a starting job in the future.

Awwwwwwwwww come on!
Yes, "Awwwwwwwwwww come on!" was the reaction as the Hockey Canadian women, the first all-female team to enter in the tournement, lost to Sarzonia in a 3-1 match yesterday. Colombe Derstine scored the lone goal for Hockey Canada, but it wasn't enough.
Hockey Canada will play Talzeckia tomorrow to show that a woman's team can compete.

After a long time on hiatus, the FHWC continues again. The Junis-Omeh'ny don't lack a good nickname anymore: they are now the Hedgehogs after the national animal of Rejistania. The Orange-White-Blue hedgehog will be their mascot, and the staff of the KaMaRi Update is sure someone as rude as Ila Iles will hide in the costume. In this case, opponents as well as live broadcasters should be warned.

5:0?!?!?!
The entire Na~ovi National stuff fainted as they heard that the Hedgehogs won their first match 5:0. The first match curse normally ment that the FHWC team loses the first match quite highly or scrapes a not-quite-loss (to use an Abysmal expression), they will do better afterwards - hopefully win, maybe lose by a smaller margin (that bring back memories of the first time we competed). There were no real clear wins on the first matchday, sometimes lucky one-goal-not-losses but never, ever, ever a 5:0. The only hope is that the first-match-curse changed its form due to the different group stage.

Kazakhstania Finally Release Team Roster, After Defeat From Sarzonia
Kazakhstania has released it's roster, hoping that public recognition will do the mixed well in further matches. After winning their first match, Kazakhstania have lost their second, and are hoping to find winning form again.
Goalkeepers:
Anthony Wood - Kazkahstania premier Hockey Goalkeeper, the 32 year old veteran has stopped more shots than there are brain cells left in her head.
Ian Copland - A young upstart goalkeeper given his first chacne at international Hockey, Ian is 23 years old and aspires to greatness.
Defenders
Martin Flynne - Our strong central defender, Martin has seen his fair share of matches at 31 years old. He hopes to see many more aswell.
Michael Duncan - A fast young right wing defender, he has played in Kazkahstnaia's top league since he was only 18, and is now 21.
Ally Adamson - A tall left defender, his prime roll in defence is to hit the ball as hard as he can in the general direction of the oppositions goal. He is good at it, too, as at 28 he has had plenty of practice.
Lucifer Michaels - Another central defender, perhaps not as good as Flynne, but he helps support attacking moves well. He is 25, and has played pro for five years.
Mark McKay - One of our reserve defenders, he can play in both central and right defence, and has a strong pass. H eplays in the second division in Kazkahstania, but is progressing upwards rapidly.
Ritchie Lucas - Ritchie is a product of Kazkahstania's youth Hockey Squad, and play in a free floating left defence role. He has good thigns ahead of him, we think, at only 19 years old.
Midfielders
Steven Taylor - Perhaps Kazakhstania's best midfielder, Taylor attacks down the centre, and attacks often. He loves long shots, and is the playmaker of the team. At 28 years old, he is a respected member of the team.
Robert Blaik - A tall right midfielder, he is Taylor's counterpart, feeding in passes from the right and givign the attackers their chances of goal. He is 27 years old, from Atryau in Kazkahstania.
Sulimann Malik - From the arabic part of Kazkahstania, this powerhouse left midfielder sets of various attacking moves, and helps support attacks when he can. A top gaolscorer in the Kazkahstanian premier league, he is a force to be reckoned with, at 26 years old.
Paul Paterson - An attacking midfielder who spends more time in attack than defence, Paul scores many of the teams goals as well as laying off the two marksmen Attackers. He is 31 years old, also from Atryau.
Chris Baillie - Baillie is a young midlfield star, starring in the premier league and working his way up to the top teams. At 20 years old, he has a promising career ahead of him.
Alistair Menzies - Some say he is past it, but he is still a strong right midfielder, at 35 years old he has all the teams experience with him. He looks forward to retirement, and helping the stars in the future throughout his coaching career ahead of him.
Attackers
Jordan Linton - Star attacker. That's all that needs to be said, he ahs scored hundreds of goals and is the heart of any attack. he works well with Paterson, to create goals that will win matches. All this, and he's only 21.
Mike Thomas - Thomas is the left attacker for the squad, who scores many ingenious goals and has saved the team many times in the past. Works well with any team, he is Kazakhstanias most experienced striker, at 31.
Lynsey Ross - Lynsey soudns like a girls name, but call him that to his face and you will get a hockey stick shoved somewhere unpleasant. He is a strong attacker, however he does not work well without a decent playmaking midfield. At 27 years old, he needs to improve quickly to become a first team regular.

Streaks off to stellar start
With a war and with other events drawing the attention of supporters, the start of the 12th Field Hockey World Cup has slipped the notice of many in Sarzonia. However, the Streaks have not been deterred, winning their first two matches by scores of 3-1 and 2-0 to grab first place in Group A.
"We've played well, no question," Coach Chris Marchment said. "We're a little bit spoiled by football in this country and lacrosse has gotten more attention than we have, but we're going to keep getting after it."
Midfielder Quentin Barker and forward Cory Denton have accounted for all the scoring for the Streaks, with Denton scoring three of the five goals. Barker assisted him on the first goal of the World Cup tournament, a 22nd minute tally that drew the match against Hockey Canada even 1-1 after Hockey Canada drew first blood in the 14th minute. The defense stiffened after that, not allowing another goal.
"We're going to have to keep working hard," Marchment said. "Dave Finney's been playing great and we're playing well in front of him, but we have to continue that."

Goals Galore - But no winner
The Hedgehogs drew against the Englanders with the score of 3:3. Despite an attacking match with 6 goals no team was victorious. In group stage, it is still possible to share points without reaching Extra time. Unfortunately, the guy who was supposed to bring us the roster of Liverpool England fell on his way to the Sikenian Daily, the wind caught the sheet, and made it flew on the Makhistirali (main road). He tried to catch the letter, but a car ignored the speed limit, saw him too late and hit him. The messenger was injured the roster defaced by bloodstains. the paper fell out of his hand and the wind made it fly towards the building of the Sikenian daily... on a pile of dogshit. The reporter, who wrote this article stepped on it, by this ruined his shoes and more important the sheet - completely. The messenger is in hospital at the moment. That is the reason, why we can not tell you who scored for the Englanders but we can tell you that they took the lead and the 2:0 6 minutes later.
Atasixi Y lowered the lead in a penalty flick to 1:2. His teammate from Sike, Hika I On, equalized the score in the 47th minute and took the lead after a questionable situation. In the dieing minutes of the match, the score was equlized again, by whom? See above.

- Another loss?
- Well, yeah...what did you expect?
- A win? One little win?
- That just isn't going to happen any time soon.
- The power of negative thinking...
- Look, we just can't continue to play with this equipment! We will never win unless...
- Unless what? What is wrong with your equipment?
- Ice skates...?
- Ice skates?
- Well, yeah...they thought this was an Ice Hockey tournament when we signed up, and gave us all this really neat equipment that is basically useless for field hockey. But, we have to wear uniforms to play. So, we're out there in ice skates and...well, see?
- Why don't you idiots just contact the Ministry of Athletics, Olympics, and Alcoholic Beverages and get...oh...
- Now do you see?
- ...Yeah. Gone. Sunk. Waves. Water. No Ministry - no new equipment. No Homeland... No going home after the tournament, either, I guess.
- ...well?
- Ummm...maybe we could...uh...take up a collection?

Hedgehogs sting mooses*
The Hedgehogs defeated the mooses of Hockey Canada clearly by a 4:0 scoreline. The Canadians are unexperienced in international competition. At the beginning of the match, they had some good chances, but especially due to the talent of Meme Ji, the score remained nil all. The Hedgehogs showed their stings and played rather defensively in this half, but from time to time, they hushed in the other half and challenged the defense of the mooses. Viratenakala Ikidilesatamahakinusere was the first one to bring his name on the scoreboard (well, the abbreviation of it) when he flicked the ball between the legs of the Canadian goalie in the 16th minute. The halftime score was 1:0. Ka~nsu Venisil and Mingil Sane~l both scored in the first 7 minutes of the second half and the Canadians were even more demoralized by an own goal of the goalie.

Who are the Druida Griffins?
It is a question that many a foreign viewer has asked when Druida have been playing in the Field Hockey World Cup in South Osettia. Well, any Druidan fan would tell you that it is they who make up the team - the fans.
As the wait between FHWCs has been so long, Druida decided it would be a good idea to give up on field hockey, and have now gone on to start their own ice hockey team. However, now Druida are back to playing on slightly warmer surfaces again, they have no team. So, every game, Druida fans are invited to bring their passports along, and the first eleven who turn up get themselves a place on the team.
It's done them OK so far, too. Two wins out of three isn't too shabby, is it? Their best result so far was 2-0 against the hosts, which we guess must've come during the Great South Osettian Half-Decent Field Hockey Player Shortage.

Could be because you've played three highly-seeded teams and another unranked team which could have gone either way. Making points isn't going to make me fix scores, I'm afraid...though 'donations' might persuade me... ;)

Funny, we seem to be the only team without a win...SN38 - 4 played, 0 wins, 2 draws, 2 losses.
We looked for some time for the win in there. We got out a magnifying glass. We used an infra-red scanner. We asked our mother. Finally, we had to admit that we simply could not find "Waldo".
We did consider South Osettia's "offer" to accept "donations" - unfortunately, however, our treasury recently sank to the bottom of the sea with the rest of our nation.

*ooc: Aren't they meese?OOC: The plural of "moose" is "moose." Not mooses or meese. It's moose. And yes, it's confusing.

Kazakhstania Out?
Could it be? After doing so well in NSF1 and the Lacrosse World Cup, could it be that Kazkahstania will be out of the Hockey World Cup?
It could be, but then again we haven't been expecting much. In a final push to reach the "through places" and perhaps another win, Kazakhstania has brought in Super-Coach Don Martin!
".....The Team is very good basically, adn with a bit of training can be brought to the standard of the rest of the team! Our defenders have let us down a bit, so we are hoping to boost our way up out group, maybe. If not,m there will be a next year, and then we will be ready for anything!"
This was said in an interview with Martin, as he hopes for the team to develop in the future. As for the rest of the squad, they were hard at work, practising passing by the looks of it.

Kazakhstania defeated
The hedgehogs won their 4th match by a 1:4 win over Kazakhstania. Coach Sa-Tri On said: "this went as hoped but the really important matches will be the ones in front of us." This win changes nothing in the tables since Liverpool England also did not slip up and are still lurking on the second position of the table for a rejistanian slip-up. Atasixi Y scored in the 5th minute. Syku Meke archieved his first international hat trick. in the last minutes of the match, the rejistanians were too uncautious and were punished by the 4:1. However the Kazakhstanian team could not seriously endanger the win.

- You're telling me that now the new equipment's been delivered?
- ...Uh, yes, sir.
- Now?
- ...Yes?
- It's over. We played all our Field Hockey matches using Ice Hockey equipment, managed to actually win a game, got ourselves eliminated, and NOW we get field hockey equipment?
- ...Yeah, I guess so.
- Is it chocolate?
- What?
- Is it chocolate? Because if it's chocolate, we can eat it. Otherwise, it's useless.

Revenge is sweet
The Hedgehogs defeated the Streeters in the last match of group one. It was a revenge after a series of disgraces on Streetian ground and against the Streeters. Again we can not present a Streetian roster, but this time because the someone transliterated the names into the rejistanian alphabet and a retransliteration would be incomprehensible for any non-rejistanian.
The Streeters value attacking play very much and so they achieved the lead relatively fast, they also do not value defending much, which caused the equalizer by Mingil Sane~l. In the 20th minute, another Streeters could capitalize a defensive mistake for the 2:1. In the second half, the Rejistanians scored twice in counter attacks. Sane~l'he and Atasixi Y were the scorers.
The Hedgehogs lead the tables with a 85.7142857142% record.

The AHR (asene hokeji rejistaniha) told the fans that they thank for this great support against New Manhattan. The fans stunned the manhattanite team by waving flags with hammer and sickle or Che Guevara and chanting the Internationale. When the manhattanite team eventually was able to move coherently again, they were trailing 3:0. Despite the defensive match of the hedgehogs, the manhattanites could score once due to a penalty flick scored by Alan Trevor Simoleon.

Finally!
The Hedgehogs, who were formally the Rejistaniha'ny or the Junis-Omeh'ny reached the final of the 12th installment of the FHWC. This time, the Sikenian Daily can present a roster, even though the carrier pigeon, we used to save the problem with messengers and post services, was intercepted. The hunter was kind enough to send the letter, it carried to the Sikenian Daily.
The first half was good hockey on high niveau, but without any 100% Chances. In the second half, Bill Houlder made a costy mistake in the 37th minute, which allowed Atasixi Y to flick the ball past Dave Finney. 1:0 for the Orange-Blues. Only because goalie Lyku Sike 'was there'* in the right moment, the score remained at this level in the 46th minute in an attack of Cory Denton. A late attack increased the score for the Hedgehogs: the match ended 2:0.
*We can not translate "Sike'he'mi'la'sike" with keeping the joke of 'sike=to be there.

The Hedgehogs played as if in a trance on this day of the final, that does not mean that they appeared to be mentally absent, but that they played in a way, they never played before. The Field Cats were seriously outplayed in large parts of the match, even though it seemed that they would take the lead. In the 5th minute, Mikatesh Holiao had a good chance after winning the duel against defender Meme Ji, luckily, Lyku Sike parried. Just three minutes later, the Hedgehogs took the lead: "J.J." Falieoa had no chance to parry Y'he's long distance shot. Ka~nsu Venisil was able to increase the score after a penalty flick. In the second half, the rejistani forward Mingil Sane~l fell and accidentally got hit by the stick of Eliseo Sabato. Sa-Tri On changed the seleken substitute Viratenakala Ikidilesatamahakinusere in. The stadium speaker refused to announce that for some faint reason. He had another reason to refuse to announce important game facts when the seleken forward increased the score to 3:0 in the 49th minute.
In southern Rejistania, people celebrate on the streets, the more south, the more wild. In central Rejistania, there were private celebration, but nanti ligats are not as crazy as the nrtheners and the southeners. And what about the northern region? People there did not even know that there was a final, unless they had contact to southeners or centrals. We can only hope (for the GDP of the country) that the south somewhen decides to calm down.
