Thank you to TBF for the following.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
I remember World Cup 5. I remember anxiously awaiting my score, scrolling down slowly in the RP thread to heighten my enjoyment of the result, I remember not being able to wait to RP because it was fun to explain how my team got on and the inter team politics. And I was not the only one, on many occasions the World Cup thread would get overloaded with RPs, well over 100 pages in several cups. I remember caring about who was going to win, even if I was eliminated. I remember having a chance to enjoy the game even though I was new and (very) annoying.
Can any of us say that we feel that with the cup today? I fear the answer for many of you is no. I recall a comment from Praying2God only a few days ago, it said:
“I'm withdrawing my puppet, Everlasting Friendship, from WC XXII right now, and might withdraw my main nation at a later date because the WC has become full of people who have their head up their buttocks and don't seem to get that this is meant to be fun, and that people may do things like attempt to stir up rivalries to make the game more fun for everybody.”
I feel P2G has a point. We in the World Cup are facing a crisis, we are losing many of our old members and are hoping new RPers will take their place whilst expecting similar RPs. We all enjoyed the RPing from Lemmitania, Snub Nose 38 and Errinunderra, just to name a few, but this is not to say that we should hope for replicas. Everyone has their own RP style and ways to enjoy the game. However, we all seem to be rather hostile to new styles of RP. This is not a new thing, I remember that when Eauz first came around people didn’t like his inventive style of RP, now he is recognised as one of the most accomplished RPers in the game.
We need to stop being so hostile to new styles and ideas if we are to make the cup fun again. We need to stop trying to change people to the person we would want to meet and accept them for who they are. There have been many cases of widespread dislikes in the World Cup, these include Hiirraan recently and both Liverpool England and myself. But we must accept people are different and stop taking petty snipes at each other. This is not to say we should get rid of the competitiveness. Competitiveness is one of those things which makes the World Cup, everyone trying to beat the other guy, IC rivals battling it out closely. This is what I think needs to be encouraged and OOC anger needs to be turned in RP genius.
Many people have felt that I am trying to host again to quickly, and that my hosting bids are still to much of a tradition each cup. But I am hosting for the joy of hosting now. I’ve got what I’ve always wanted, to be on the WCC but I also, like you, want to have fun from this game. I will enjoy bidding and enjoy the result, whatever it is, I will have my enjoyment. There was also controversy over my previous hosting opportunity. I want to put this right. I want to prove that I am not the worst host the WC has ever seen. Therefore I introduce my hosting bid with Krytenia:
We shall be using the following formula:
RAND()*100-84+((YOUR RANK-THEIR RANK)/15)-ATTACK NUMBER/2
Cockbill Street has handily informed me that this gives an average 12.5% of scoring. This gives an average of 3.5 goals per match. However, the most important part of this formula I fell is the chance that those new to the cup are given a better chance. This is not just those “Newbs who RP” but all those new to the cup. I think that someones dedication to the cup should not garuntee results, as I feel that anyone who signs up to the cup does so out of fun. And whilst losing a lot of the time may be enjoyable to some, those who are new to the cup sometimes experience many losses, sometimes not even winning a match. And from my own experience, winning when you begin, makes it more fun and entices people to RP, exactly the thing we want.
Also, the RP bonus will not be massive. I think most people now agree that RP boni must be slim as everyone does not have the same ability to RP as many of the big RPers do. Many people have work and school commitments. However, those who do entertain us in the cup do deserve an award, so a bonus shall be added.
The main aim of this cup is for us to generate interest, because otherwise we will fall flat on our face. Because without people coming in, such as Krytenia, Melmond, South Ossetia, Lethislavinia and many others who dedicate so much of their time towards the cup, there would not be a cup. Only a few people from my first cup, 18 cups ago still are around. I hope that will be enough influx of new, excited nations that we reach World Cup 40.
