Portelanians elect Edgard Portela as their new President

Portelania City, Portelania, Portelania Broadcasting Service (PBC) News - In the fourth round of Portelania's presidential elections, opposition leader Edgard Portela held nearly a 30 percentage point lead over incumbent President Augusto Portela-Subiru with 95 percent of the votes counted.

"For years, we were independent, but we were not free," Edgard Portela told to tens of thousands of his supporters in Portelania's Verenicia Square, the center of the “blue revolution”. "Now we can say this is a thing of the past. Now we are facing an independent and free Portelania."

Edgard Portela, a former Central Bank President, General and Senator, wants to bring Portelania closer to international participation and provide economic and political reform. Portela-Subiru, whose base is in the industrialized east, promised to continue economic growth and isolationism.

The Republic of Portelania has always elected a Portela to the Presidency since the founding of the Republic in 1815. The Portelas were the family that initially founded the Republic and led the fight for freedom and democracy in Portelania. In the 1992 elections, Augusto Portela-Subiru (not a full Portela) won with 49% of the vote, the smallest mandate ever given to a Portela in the nation's history. Augusto Portela-Subiru shut the country out of the international scene. His isolationist policies hurt the Portelanian economy greatly, touching off mass revolts and demonstrations throughout the country. For the 1996 elections, he won with a mandate of almost 99.9% against challenger Jose Portela y Quiroga. International observers quickly confirmed that the election was riddled with fraud. For the elections of 2000, he won again with the same overwhelming results, defeating Manuel Allende-Portela. For these recent elections, Augusto Portela-Subiru introduced soldiers into the polls to force the people to vote for him. This touched off mass demonstrations and led to three more pollings. Fraud riddled the polls again and again until international observers were introduced to the fourth round of elections, in which Edgard Portela has come out as the clear winner.

The National Front for Democracy, of which Portela is Chairman, has also won a great victory in the National Congress, capturing 100 seats in the 125-seat Chamber of Deputies and capturing 10 seats out of the 15-seat Senate. The Front for Democracy has captured 13 of the 15 Provincial Governorships as well. Many political analysts within Portelania now are afraid that they "have changed a dictator for another", and the opposition has reduced itself to begging voters to elect them to prevent another Portela from having his way.

It is now expected that Congress will elect Jose Martin-Portela as its Prime Minister, the first time in Portelania's history that the Portelas have held both major executive positions simultaneously.

New Prime Minister gets his cabinet after major arguments

Portelania City, Portelania; PBC News - Jose Martin-Portela, the new Portelanian prime minister, has won Congressional approval for his cabinet after being forced to drop President Portela's favorites from his nomination list.

Mr. Martin-Portela included 8 newcomers in his cabinet to secure the ratification vote at the third attempt.

Portelanian legislators had insisted on throwing out some of President Portela's nominees, many of which were associated with the administration of former President Augusto Portela-Subiru.

Some of the high-profile victims to be culled include Jose Gallego, a Portela ally who was a key spokesman for Portelanians on the world stage.

Mr. Martin-Portela, himself appointed by President Portela, would have been forced to resign if he had not won the vote.

The ratification clears the way for President Edgard Portela to press on with his agenda of reforming the government and introducing democratic reforms.

He had urged Mr. Martin-Portela to include reformers in his team after being elected last month on a ticket of bringing democracy and cracking down on corruption.

Other key Portela appointees to go include Ernesto Allende, the former minister for social welfare, and Anibal Acevedo, who represented the Portelanian delegation to the United Nations and supported isolationist policies.

President Portela orders former President Portela-Subiru to be placed under home arrest

Portelania City, Portelania, PBC News - After a major speech made by former President Portela-Subiru to his supporters in the east calling for a "revolution", President Portela ordered that Portela-Subiru be arrested and placed under house arrest. "For the safety and preservation of democracy, this must be done," said Presiden Portela in a national address. "Augusto Portela-Subiru will be brought forth to face charges against the nation."

Former President Portela-Subiru is accused of the dissapearance of more than 100,000 pro-democracy demonstrators over a period of eight years. He is also accused of restirring the urges of independence for East Portelania with recent speeches.

Portelanian law enforcement prevents terrorist attack on Presidential Palace

Portelania City, Portelania, PBC News - Law enforcers have prevented a major terrorist attack in the capital of Portelania's government district.

A truck filled with explosives was discovered by the side of the Presidential Palace. A special police battalion killed two militants operating the vehicle, ready to blow it up, while carrying out a reconnaissance operation, the local police department told PBC today.

A law enforcement source said one of the dead militants is believed to be a foreign citizen, its citizenship still not disclosed. The other dead militant was a known Portela-Subiru supporter, as well as supporting East Portelanian Independence.

Now, let me introduce myself.

I am Edgard Portela, the recently elected President of Portelania. I have been working in NS before, but never got into the forums. I heard this is where the good stuff happens, so I decided to join in the fun.

Could I get a quick rundown of how things work around here? Thanks!
