Darkest Days

A lone armoured figure walked through the wreckage of what had once been the industrial sector of the mega-city of Phoenix. His rifle was slung over his shoulder and his body hidden by jet black armour dented and scratched from years of use. As he looked up once more at the jet black cloud that had besieged Phoenix for almost a week now a single explosive sound was emitted from the buildings. Anyone watching would have seen the man fall to the ground, half his head blown off. Out of the wreckage a small group of figures walked in far newer armour yet just as black as the dead man’s. One of them was carrying a rather large sniper rifle that still was smoking from recent use. As they reached the corpse they looked over the hill and saw there brethren slowly emerging from rifts. The end had begun.

Elsewhere it was fortunately quiet. The civil war had only ended a month before but the rebels still were attacking government held districts but with little chances of capturing them. The quietest district was also the most protected other than the city center. A single advanced scout unit team and a few divisions of grunts were in charge of what was left of the housing district. Before the war broke out well over three hundred thousand people lived in that district alone but when the first nuclear strike occurred only empty ruins were left. “Hey corp I think we got movement just on the edge of my firing zone,” Major Hunter called out from his prone sniper position. “Great. More rebels? Or is it something that we can to ignore?” corporal Heart responded as she walked towards her squad mate and sat beside him. “I can’t say. Think I should take it out just to be on the safe side? Or you think the commander would mind?” “I think she would mind if you missed. You know her; she’s an ex-royal. She would ride you for weeks if you missed.” “Very funny Heart, just let the commander know I’m taking a shot,” Hunter said as he pulled back the charging leaver on his sixteen millimetre sniper rifle and took aim, factoring in things like wind and range. Just as Heart had started to walk away Hunter’s sniper rifle kicked back as the sixteen millimetre high explosive shell roared forth towards its intended target. As Heart turned to see she watched as a human figure’s side exploded and it fell. “Very nice major, now pack it up. We got a new assignment,” Commander Redfeild walked forward her older C-10C canister rifle in hand with the assault barrel fixed on it. Hunter almost jumped out of his skin right there and then. “Do you always have to bloody do that?!” he cried out as he regained his composure and picked his rifle up. Heart just started chuckling and offered her hand to Hunter to help him over the debris around the room. “You know me. It’s just my job to sneak around and kill things.”

The first line of defence in the department store district was a rather large mine field that had been set only hours before victory had been declared. Maintaining the field had been a dull job but first line squads had to have something to do. As a lone tech sergeant shuffled forth from the many linking trenches and buildings he around and knelt down next to one of the many control mines. “Stupid piece of crap always malfunctioning on my watch,” he muttered to himself as he reactivated the “smart” code in the detonation system. He didn’t see it coming; a single mortar shell blew him and the command mine away instantly leaving behind only a smoking bloody hole. As the other troops had just realized what happened literally a hell storm of lead and other kinds of projectiles shot forth from the shadows cast by the totalled buildings cutting down those who dared to poke there head above the protective lines of the trenches. Even as the occupants of the trenches began to return fire into the darkness it almost seemed as they had awaken a sleeping beast. Well over a hundred black armoured troops poured out, rifles firing madly cutting down the troops in the trenches. As they reached the mine field they continued to advance even while the mines ate away at there numbers it seemed that more continued to pour out in a never ending flow.

The trench commander saw the advancing horde and just looked out in awe as well as fear. His shaking hand reached down for the radio he began to call out, “This is the first line of the department store district. We have come under heavy fire from an unknown enemy. As it stands now the mine field will only hold them for a short time. We need assistance as soon as possible.” As he listened only the sound of dead static replied to his plea for help, assuming he wasn’t heard he dropped the hand set and took aim hoping to drop a few of these new attackers while he could.

Major Hunter cried out as he felt a bullet graze his shoulder and dropped into whatever cover he could find. “Bloody hell that hurt!” he called out to commander Redfeild who was only one mortar crater ahead of them. She didn’t respond most likely not hearing Hunters shouts over the roar of her own rifle that returned the deadly storm of lead and tungsten-steel. Corporal Heart hid behind a support pillar reloading her rifle’s grenade launcher. “Where the hell did they come from?” she called out to Hunter as she turned back out and began to fire on the advancing forces dropping them one by one. “Don’t ask me just keep shooting!” Hunter replied as he fired shell after shell into the major threats he saw.

Only a single block away another heavily armed soldier sprinted out of an alley rifle spewing metallic death cutting down one of his pursuers and forcing the rest to seek cover. The figure then turned and ended up in yet another battlefield, this time right beside the enemy ranks. He cursed under his breath and brought his rifle to bear. He squeezed the firing pin and his rifle lobbed a single plasma charge from the mini-mortar on the underside of his rifle. As the explosion disrupted the enemy ranks as well as vaporized at least a dozen of them.

Major Hunter watched this through his scope and called out to Heart, “Did you just see what I saw?” “Ya I did. Provide cover fire for that crazy bugger.” Hunter didn’t need to be told twice before he began firing on the targets closest to the newest arrival. Redfeild looked down and pulled the trigger on the undercarriage grenade launcher on her rifle and smirked as the grenade impacted against an alley cutting off one of the many enemy escape routes. The figure ignored the support he had just been granted and continued to mow down the enemy force without mercy until his rifle’s clip ran dry. When the empty sputters began to occur he let go of the rifle and reached down to his sidearm to continue to fire.

The fire fight finally ended though at not a pleasant price. Ammo was at a low as was the chances of evacuating to a command center. “Well looks like it is time to say hello to our new ‘friend’,” Hunter said as he began to repack the medical kit after tending to his wounds. “There isn’t any need major. As it stands we can save the formalities for a later time. Until then we have to prepare for further attacks as well as reload and rearm,” Commander Redfeild said as she placed a freshly loaded clip into her rifle and began to walk down towards the lone figure. “This is Commander Alice Redfeild of the fifth ASU squad. Please state your rank and name.” The figure turned and replied “I’m General Knightly of the first ASU squad and current commanding officer of the ASU.” “Sir,” Alice exclaimed not expecting to hear that name as she quickly entered a hasty salute. “At ease commander,” Knightly responded quickly as he began to look over the dead attackers. “Hmm. Definitely not rebel. This stuff doesn’t even match up to our own equipment, at least a few decades further along than our own,” Knightly muttered as he looked over the corpse’s armour for any marks that would answer who had just attacked them.

Hunter leaned against one of the many pillars in the building they were camping in. “So let me get this straight. We are dealing with an enemy force that suddenly appeared out of nowhere and as it stands we are losing?” he asked one more time still not being able to believe it. “Alright… As it stands this unknown force began striking at us at about oh-nine hundred yesterday morning. At first lone sentries around the old industrial sector began to go missing. We simply gave the rebels credit for that until they managed to claim at least twenty-five sentries. By then we were worried but it was too late since later that same day, this day to be exact a massive blitzkrieg was launched on our forces mainly against our special forces units and armoured divisions. Currently with what I know so far we are being butchered slowly. We are able to win some minor victories but as it stands if this pace keeps going we’ll be crushed within months,” Knightly said as he finished placing the final round in his rifle’s clip. “Great. We finish a civil war and we get thrown into another fight for our lives all in the same month,” Hunter muttered as he reached for a ration pack and opened it eyeballing the contents before slowly poking at it with the spoon that came with it. “It’s not going to jump out and attack you Hunter,” Heart replied as she placed an empty ration pack on the ground. “I strangely doubt that Heart,” he replied as he began eating it slowly expecting it to scream.

Alice during this time sat out on watch her rifle in hands listening to the three talking. Outside away from the warm welcome glow of the small fire they had going the city was a war zone. The constant cracking of weapons fire echoed through the night, while explosions faired throughout the horizon. As she looked out her mind drifting she was startled to feel an armoured hand gently place don her shoulder. “You go get some rest Alice. As it stands you are going to need it,” Knightly said as he sat beside her his rifle in hand. “Thanks. It’s been a while since we last saw each other hasn’t it?” she replied as she slowly began to rise from her perch. “Yes it has Alice. Far to long for old friends,” Knightly replied as he placed his helmet next to him and looked out at the chaos in the horizon wondering what was next. “Hunter will come get you in a few hours Josh. Until then try not to get killed,” Alice said as she slowly walked back to the group and joined in the conversation. Knightly sighed quietly, it had been a long day and the night was still young. He shifted around until he was finally comfortable and looked up at the eternally dark sky. To shi surprise he felt a single rain droplet land on his cheek slowly others began to fallow. He smiled and held out an armoured hand and looked at the water pooling on the surface of the plates. As he looked out across the war torn horizon and rain all he could do now was hope that when the next day dawned they would have a city to wake up to.
