[NSTA Tennis] Roegrow Open

Cockbill Street
16-02-2005, 16:39
The Ts'khinvali Open has just been completed and ranked, and Cockbill Street will gladly host the next international tennis tournament on the newly completed Roegrow Tennis Arena. Capable of seating 12,000 fans, this Progressan-built hardcourt ground looks slightly out of place in an otherwise medieval city, but the fans probably won't bother too much about that.

Players that participated (i.e. RPed) in the Ts'khinvali Open will automatically be entered into the Roegrow Open. Those that want to enter for the first time, or just didn’t get around to getting involved last time, should fill out the following entry form:

South Osettia
19-02-2005, 15:54
(OOC: Could you please confirm that Gradi Jarenko and Olga Waqasie have been given first round byes?)

With autumn just around the corner, millions around the world are cramming tennis into their schedules, in place of activities such as work, sleep and bathing (which explains the disgusting stench that accompanies tennis courts). The latest NSTA Tennis tournament, the only world-recognised tennis association, is to be held in Cockbill Street, and this is where we are today, providing you losers with nothing better today with a preview of the Roegrow Open.

South Osettia's lord and lady of the balls (that's tennis balls...not any other type of balls), Gradi Jarenko and Olga Waqasie, have rather generously been given first-round byes, meaning that local studmuffin Requso Makinov is the only party whom we have any interest in. However, just so that we can prove to the authorities that we are a non-biased television organisation, we're going to spend a bit of time looking at some other games first.

In the men's competition, the match of the round will probably be the one between the two Nieder Ostland players Bachmann and Schwarzbach. Having not participated in the Ts'khinvali Open, Bachmann will be desperate to climb back up the rankings, and a nice easy opener against a fellow countyman will do just the trick to set him on his way. Harrigan vs. Boudrea will also be very good, with both Liverpool Englanders next to each other in the rankings. However, Makinov will first face Louis Lee of Adam Island. Both having done better than expected in the Ts'khinvali Open, they'll both be trying to prove it wasn't a fluke. In an interview earlier today, Makinov had this to say:

"I'm getting back to my former self and, with a little cleansing and moisturising, my face will be as smooth as a baby's bottom, and my grip will be iron on my racket. I aim to get to at least the third round here on the Street, and then after that, I'm taking some hot chicks out for a meal and then it's back to my place - you know what I'm saying?"

This was followed by a series of pelvic thrusts, upon which note we got out of there quickly.

In the women's tournament, Sady Shouta will hope to do as well in this tournament as she did in the last. Pulling off a few shocks then, will she able to do the same to von Oben of Nieder Ostland? And will the Lovisan derby match end in predictability or surprise? Here are our predictions:

Guten Abend meine damen und herren. This is Julia Kaltenbrunner, with the latest news from the Roegrow open.
The first round have just been played, and it could've been a better day for our tennis players.
3 of our 5 players who played today all have to go home after losing their games.
Günther Bachman did what he was supposed to do, and won over Jürgen Schwarzbach. Thou Jürgen fought hard, Günther won three straight sets.
12th seeded Manfred Heinze lost against the non-seeded Benjamin Lichen in a close five set match. Good job by Lichen, but I think Manfred should have won that match. Better luck next time.

In the womens tournament our top star, and for the second tournament in a row, first seeded player, Theresia Mehlinger rested today. She followed the match of Hanna von Oben, who unfortunately lost against Sady Shouta. Ewa Zimmermann managed to surprise everyone, by beating 7th seeded Mary Magaline.

Of the five matches our players played today, three was against players from Jeruselem. And they won two of them.

In the next round Günther Bachman, who is seeded third in the tournament, will face 14th seeded Skruid. A game Bachmann SHOULD win, but you never know.

Theresia Mehlinger will play her first match against Liann Sing, who played an even and hard game last round.
And Ewa Zimmermann will face Kristen Favior, who did beat tenth seeded Sarah Greyson easily. We do of course hope that Ewa will win, but it's some tough opposition she's up against.

The big surprise of the first round, was when 7th seeded Harald Beerquaffer lost against Alejandro Jones. Good game Alejandro.

This is julia Kaltenbrunner, giving you, the people of Nieder Ostland, the latest news and reports from the Roegrow open.

Jacob Harrigan LEN (16) d Bobby Boudreau LEN 3-6 6-2 6-2 6-7 (4-7) 6-4

"You're watching Sports Update Nightly. Now, to tennis. In the Roegrow Open, two Liverpool Englanders were paired against each other in a twist to the first round draw. 16th seed Jacob Harrigan defeated fellow countryman Bobby Boudreau in a five-set thriller, three-six, six-two, six-two, six-seven, six-four.

We pick up the action in the third set with Boudreau serving on four-five, 30-40.

Boudreau slams the ball into the net twice for a double fault, handing the set to Harrigan. That was probably where Boudreau broke down; but for a glimmer of strength and hope in the fourth, he was certainly down and out.

Here are selected results from the first round."

Mary's Tennis News

It's not soccer but the tennis is back

It's the Roegrow Open and Jeruselem's four players are back to get some experience to big tournies or even give the finals a shake. Would you believe we won 3 of 4 games and Mary lost?

Jacob Arat had to fight but beat 11th seed in a 5 setter for a well deserved win. He was 1-2 sets down but won the last two sets convincingly. Benjamin Lichen did the same as Jacob except against the 12th seed, winning 8-6 in the last set for a glorious win.

Remember Sally Shouta? She's won her second game in STRAIGHT SETS win, the first being the last game of the last tournament. Mary Magaline lost her game as 7th seed after being smashed 6-0 in the last set and losing the 2nd set 11-9 in a tie-breaker. Her coach said the 2nd set did her in and she didn't have much left after it.

Guten abend meine damen und herren.

Yesterday was a great day for the Ostlandish players. All three of them went thrue to the quarter finals.

Günther Bachmann defeated Ashton Skruid in a 4 set match. After losing the first set, Güntehr came back and won three straight sets.

In the womens tournement Both Mehlinger and Zimmermann won their matches.
Mehlinger did what she was supposed to do by defeating Liann Sing two sets to none. In the game you could clearly see why Mehlinger is ranked no 1 in the world. Liann didn't have much of a chance, thou shi did fight well.

Zimmermann had a much harder match, but she managed to win by two sets to none. Thou the last set ended 7 - 5. This shows that it was an even match, that both players could have won.

Next round, Zimmermann will face the unseeded Sandy Shouta. But, thou she's unseeded, she did beat Hanna von Oben in her first match, and yesterday she managed to shock the entire tennis world by beating the second seeded Olga Waqasie. Zimmermann will haver to play some very good tennis to beat Waqasie.

Mehlinger should be able to beat the ninth ranked storm, and Bachmann should, with some good plays, be able to beat the ninth Decrovia. But, like I said, it takes some good tennis from Bachmanns side.

This is Julia Kaltenbrunner, Live from Roegrow open.

Decrovia continues roll, heads into quarter finals

Paul Decrovia continues to be Fmjphoenix's most consistant tennis player, as he is not advancing to the quarter finals undefeated and is preparing for its toughest opponent this open, Günther Bachmann from Nieder Ostland.

Paul Decrovia FMJ (6) d Jacob Arat JEW 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 6-2 6-7 (6-8) 6-4

Bachmann defeated Decrovia's long time friend and doubles partner Ashton Skruid in four sets, so Decrovia is hoping to return the favor and beat out Bachmann. Look for hard play from Decrovia in his friends honor.

Mary's Tennis News

Sally fights while the men lose to the seeds

It's bad news on the tennis front. With Mary the 7th seed out in the first round, the 2nd round looked good for our team. It was not to be as Arat and Lichen weren't disgraced but lost their games. Lichen simply couldn't match the class of the 5th seed Arzu and lost in 4. Arat's loss in 5 sets after fighting back after losing the 1st and 3rd sets, was brave but Decrovia outlasted him.

Sally Shouta, won again? You heard it here. Straight sets win and she's into quarter finals now to meet E Zimmermann. She's on a roll and we hope she gets into the final. It's the finals, where the tough survive and those who can't fight for survival lose.

The quarter finals have now been played, and the big surprise this round was that our very own Theresia Mehlinger was beaten. She lost her match against the ninth ranked Rebecca Storm.
We all thought thet Theresia would win that game, but today Rebecca proved to be the better player, and she won fair and square. We have tried to get Theresia to comment on the match, but she have refused to say anything.

But, it was not all bad news yesterday. The unranked Ewa Zimmerman managed to win her quarter final against Sandy Shouta. The first set was a really tight one, and a tie break was needed to decide the winner. In the second set it looked like Sandy had fought maybe too hard in the first set, as she had a hard time to keep up with Zimmermann's play.
We wish Zimmerman all the best of luck in the semi finals, where she will meet Sara Zettergren, ranked at third place. Not an easy match for Ewa.

Günther Bachmann is still in the tournament, after winning a hard five set match against Paul Decrovia. Bachmann will now face the second seeded Daniel Kleston in the semi finals.
Both the matches in the mens semi finals promises some good tennis. As in the first match the 1st seeded and the fourth seeded will battle for the place in the finals. We will of course send all the semi finals and finals live to you!

This is Julia Kaltenbrunner wishing you a good nite!

As we all expected Sara Zettergren became too hard opposition for Ewa Zimmerman. She lost two strait sets, 6-1, 6-3. Sara won the match easilym without having to show her full potential. But, Ewa should be happy, not many players reaches the semi finals in their first major tournament.

Günther Bachmann won his semifinal against Danial Kleston, three sets to one. 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4. It was an even game, and the key for Günther was that he managed to hold his serve in all his serve games. Besides that, the match could have gone either way.

No Günther will face the no 1 seeded Gradi Jarenko in the final. A tough match to say the least, but we all know that Günther is capable of beating him, if he plays his best tennis.

This is Julia Kaltenbrunner wishing you a good nite.

Gradi Jarenko has made it to his second final in as many tournaments. This time however, his opponent is slightly better, being Gunther Bachmann of Nieder Ostland. This will be a good battle, as both nations aim to become the best tennis nation in the world, the title currently held by SO, but closely followed by NO. Jarenko is also aiming to be the first ever player to win two consecutive trophies, and cement his place at the top of the world rankings. This will be one of the matches of the tournament, and it is estimated that 272 million South Osettians will be watching the game live on SOTV. Our fingers are crossed for Jarenko, as he aims to propel himself into sporting history.

Zettergren Has First Tennis Success
Face Storm In Final

Sara Zettergren has served, smashed and volleyed her way to the first tennis final in the time of the NSTA organisation, winning her semi-final in style against Ewa Zimmermann of Nieder Ostland. The Ostlanders had some hope before the match, as Zimmermann has shown surprisingly good tennis so far, but the experience of Zettergren eventually proved good enough. Zettergren has now won six straight sets in the Roegrow Open, dropping the first against Kruchina 3-6 in the second round but coming back to win the next six 7-6, 8-6, 6-4, 6-2, 6-1 and 6-3. Her return game against Zimmermann was nothing short of phenomenal, as she was quick to start running and hit the returns hard. She also held her serves well, though not spectacularly, and the straight sets victory was fully deserved. Zettergren now face Rebecca Storm of Euroslavia in the final, a no doubt tough match - Storm has defeated 8th-seed Monika Zarska and 1st-seed Theresia Mehlinger on her way to the final, and today she took out Daphne Maydelein of One Red Dot in a highly exciting encounter where both held their serve to 4-4 before Maydelein crumbled in both sets.

The men were hardly as fortunate, however, Harald Beerquaffer being the surprise victim of Alejandro Jones as he went down in a five-set thriller in the first round and Callum McGrath never being in with a chance in the second round match with Mariusz Frystenberg. In the final, Gradi Jarenko faces Günther Bachmann, and this promises to be an exciting the final - the two champions of the previous NSTA tournaments facing off against each other.

Rebecca 'Storms' Her Way to the Finals!

After being seeded ninth in the Roegrow Open, there really wasn't much expectation for her to make it far into the Tournament. However, the entire tennis world has been shocked at her performance, especially against the #1 seeded Theresia Mehlinger. She has proven herself to be a force to be reckoned with, at least within this tournament. The final match is against Sara Zettergren, who has also proven to be a tough opponent. When asked about her final match in the Open, Rebecca responded with, "I'm not worried about the finals in this Open. I've worked hard, up to this point, to make it to the finals, and I know that I'm performing at the best that I ever have in my life. I know that if I do lose, I did my best, and that's all that matters. Making it into the finals is an honor in itself, as well as going against Sara Zettergren. She's a great player, and I'm looking forward to going up against her."

What a match!!

The spectators who managed to get a ticket to todays final were very lucky indeed.
It was an absolut smasher.
Unfortunately Günther couldnt manage to beat Gradi Jarenko, but Gradi needed 5 sets and 2 tie breaks to beat Günther.
But after the last tie break that Günther managed to win, with 12-10, we could clearly see the Günther isn't fully recovered from the injury that stopped him participating in the last tournament. The last set Gradi won over a very tired Günther, with 6-2.
This is a match that will be a clear candidate for the match of the century.
We can only hope for a re-match between these two gigants in tennis!

In the womens torunament Rebecca Storm won over Sara Zettergren in an even match. The match could have gone either way, but Rebecca was the stronger woman today, beating Sara with 7-5, 6-4.

This is Julia Kaltenbrunner, live from Roegrow open, and a very happy woman that I was able to see the mens final live. See you in the next tournament.

Is anyone interested in starting a new tournament? If not, i'd be happy to arrange the next one, if someone could send me, or point me to a good randomizer for results, and how to do with rankings (coz, it must be able to let high seeded players have a bigger chance of winning than low/non ranked players, or...?)

Interesting, the mens have top 4 seeds in the semis while the women's have one top 4 seed with unseeded player as well.

Actually, it isn't that "interesting", because in Aus Open 05. the top 4 men seeds were in the semis: #1 Federer, #2 Roddick, #3 Hewitt, #4 Safin, and in the women, it was: #1 Davenport, #4 Sharapova, #7 S Williams, and #19 Dechy.
