A New Direction

Tarana, Capitol City of the Resurgent Dream

Vincenzo Lacau sat looking through the papers on his desk, reports from admirals, scientists, oceanographers, demographers, and other experts. Mingled with them were reports from the engineers and officers working in six shipyards, one in each Kingdom of the Danaan High Kingdom.

Since 2 R.A., Danaan forces had expanded only slightly. Second Fleet had gone from twenty-seven to forty ships designed for combat on the surface of the sea. Fourth Fleet had gone from twenty to twenty-three ships. First and Third Fleets, considered operationally obsolete and massively inefficient respectively, had not been increased at all. Fifth Fleet would be moving in an entirely new direction.

Vintor, Shieldcrest

Boggans, Nockers, and Men moved over the 561 foot frame held up by elaborate scaffolding, welding metal and connecting beams. The general structure seemed to be that of a quite large submersible built in the traditional, largely cigar shaped pattern.

Aragrich, Wintermore

Admiral James Hammond crossed his hands behind his back as he surveyed the shipyard from his seventh story office. The frame being constructed below was much larger than the one being worked on in Vintor and of a much less conventional design. At first glance, the one 1,007 foot frame looked more like a starship than a submersible. The horizontal flattening near the front and stream-lined curves along the sides were supposedly designed to create less disruption with the ships massive water displacement or so the engineers told Hammond.

Semelia, Farinor

The giant being constructed in the Semelia shipyard was too large for any streamlining to make it fast or efficient. There was no visible place to put weaponry upon the frame, though that might be fixed later in the construction. Still, logic dictated that this large, clumsy form could be used for only one thing, cargo.

Tormin, Bilbtoria

In Tormin, too, a submersible was under construction. But here there was almost nothing to comment on. Construction was progressing along the pattern of a standard Danaan attack sub, a 375 foot affair loosely comparable with the American Virginia-class.

Samson, Holista

As in the other shipyards, a submarine was in the works. This one promised to be 165 feet and seemed to have a more complex and sophisticated design, allowing for the attachment of a great deal of high-tech equipment.

Mirvan, Fireforge

The 178 foot frame being constructed in Fireforge was bristling with places for further and more advanced attachments. Every aspect of the basic construction promised high-tech advancements in the design.

The first ship to be completed was the Sea Horse of London, named after the ship which had first brought John Washington to the New World. It was the first submarine of its class, though another was soon begun in Tormin.

Captain Ulin slipped down the hatch into the Victoria, the latest Sea Horse of London-class submersible to be completed. The rather short Piskey captain adjusted his officer's uniform as he looked over the largely Human and Nocker crew. Ulin gave a mischievous grin as the crew of his first command saluted him. Returning their salutes, the Piskey started for the bridge.

The first of his race to achieve the rank of captain, Ulin knew his people had high hopes for his sucess. Of course, officially, an officer was simply an officer and no one should even take note of the fact that he was a Piskey. Still, reality did not work in such an enlightened manner. To the Piskeys, Ulin was a point of shining pride. To those under him, well, he could feel the nervous mistrust in their gazes. He would have to earn the trust of this crew, to prove he had the right to wear this uniform. It was something he'd had to prove more than any Sidhe or Troll or even Human officer ever had but it was also something he was ready to prove again.

Captain Rolf Cossaboom walked along the dock towards the Dictator, his new Sea Horse of London-class submersible command. The Human man adjusted his formal uniform idly on his respectable yet comparatively young frame. A man of 43, Cossaboom had risen relatively quickly to command rank, quickly for peacetime in any event.

Cossaboom attributed his sucess to modernization and expansion. He was very much a man of the present and had come up through engineering. As an engineer, he appreciated the ship he saw waiting for him at the end of the dock.

Captain Corkahn Fletcher, a Mannikin woman with plastic good looks, walked towards her new command, the Sea Horse of London-class submarine Missouri. Fletcher near immobile mouth moved up in a rigid smile, the bright red plastic of her lips contrasting sharply with the literally white color of her plastic skin. She looked to the small crew of longshoremen loading the crate containing her anchor on board to a secure location. Fletcher had had to think long and hard over whether or not it would be safer to bring it or leave it but had ultimately decided to take the risk. She could hardly go fading out of existence just because she had to stay at sea for a long tour.

Samson, Holista

Captain Aitor Doto adjusted his spectacle on his aquiline nose. The thirty-something Human brushed his dark hair from his face as he approached his new command, the Wisdom-class submarine Faith. Doto grinned a shy, scholar's grin as his mind wandered to the wonders of the deep sea.

Captain Loranys Pegason climbed into the Goeben, a new Sea Horse of London-class attack submarine. Like Fletcher, Pegason was a Mannikin but she had made the opposite decision. Her anchor was remaining in a firmly hidden military bunker on the mainland, just in case her sub was hit in war. Pegason rather liked her immortal soul and rather wanted to keep it, even if it meant she couldn't take tours quite as long. If she had felt it was truly vital to national security, of course, she would have taken her anchor and the risk. Pegason was no coward. Still, there was no need to take unnecessary risks.

Captain Ricven Swordhand stepped towards the Rhode Island, adjusting his uniform. He was another of several Mannikins who'd recently received captaincies in Fifth Fleet. Swordhand smiled. He wasn't sure why his people were receiving so many commissions in this fleet but he was hardly complaining. Even in a society that was growing to pride itself on diversity, one could not help but take a great deal of interest in the fortunes of one's own people. After all, that had been the way of things for five centuries before the beginning of Agwene's reign of equality.

Swordhand looked slowly along the length of the ship. The crew was standing at attention on the deck as he boarded, welcoming their captain. He walked through the lines of saluting sailors, looking them over with a rigid but smiling inspection. He finally stopped at the end of the line and snapped to attention himself, next to his first officer. "Captain Ricven Swordhand, assuming command, HHS Rhode Island."
