Prologue

Realian
--------
An artificial human

A wonder of molecular bioengineering, its biological composition comes in various forms based on need, from carbon based duplicates of real humans to those based on silicon or liquid metal.

Their basic rights equal those of humans and are recognized by law. However due to the fact that their minds are initialized with a slight bias, all Realians tend to display similar personality traits. This bias is applied not only for the purpose of preventing criminal behavior by Realians, but also in consideration of humans who may feel threatened by their "superiority"(albeit only in certain specialized skills).

Several companies manufacture Realians, but Vector makes the basic program
(In other words the central nervous system) of all Realians.

The program is essentially a black box, and any modification beyond regular maintenance and adjustments can only be performed by Vector.

Emergency City Command Bunker - Chancellery Building
Miltia Metropolitan Area 1 (The Core)

T.C. 4573 - 20:00 Hours
Day - 1 of Miltian Conflict

The dark room, lit only by dim red lights was completely engulfed by the buzz of people running to and fro, retrieving reports, assessing damaged areas through the hundreds of monitors that lined the walls and various "islands" that were dispersed all around the ground level of the room as well as elevated balconies and hovering terraces. On one end of the multi-tiered room was a large screen that displayed the entire city of Miltia; many parts of the city were shown flashing in red while others glowed ominously in red, most of it concentrated in the industrial zones of the city.

Commander Ambrose, an aged and graying old man, in his late 70s or 80s sat atop one of the more prominent floating platforms within the room. His appearance was that of calmness and unyielding strength. But within, his mind was running processes at an unheard of rate, attempting to fully comprehend the magnitude of this situation. The commander was one of the hundreds of humans that underwent genetic and neural engineering to increase their life span due to the ratification of the Life Recycling Act over 160 years ago, in T.C. 4590. Being over two hundred years old he was greatly respected and revered within the government, honored as a national hero throughout -Noir-, this man, underneath his aura of strength, cunning, and raw intellectual power, shuddered within as the city he helped found generations ago burned.

"Sir, the reports of thousands of Realians all around -Noir- are going mad...The Vector Realian Research and Development Factory has been overrun, we have lost contact with the factory's security detachment and the police." panted an intelligence officer, who held a thin glowing hologram display. Sectors 50 through 138 in the Industrial zone are in flames!"

"What the hell is going on!?!?" exclaimed the aging Commander Ambrose. "I want a quarantine placed on those zones! We can't have these rogue Realians breaching the Residential and Commercial Districts!"

"Sir! It's too late...Hundreds of Residential and Maintenance Realians are on the lose, many of whom have engaged the local police forces in the area!"

"Someone find what's going on!" Get me in contact with Vector's Third Division, immediately!" yelled the Commander.

"The main line with Vector has been severed...Trying to connect via secondary frequency..."

"Sir, we are receiving reports from all around the planet Miltia...There are Realian uprisings everywhere...Military Command has reported that they have deactivated all Military Realians in all reachable bases...Reports say the Realians have achieved in overrunning Fort Badge, Fort Faulkner Space Port, Region 14b Chen Command Center, and Felix Naval Base."

"What's the status of our colonies and planets?" asked the Commander.

"So far...There haven't been any reports of Realian uprising in said territories...All of it is concentrated here on the planet."

"Commander, I have Vector Third Division Chief Engineer Takeshi on line 4." said the small PA prompter on the Commander's desk.

"Yes, officer you are dismissed..." said the commander to the Intelligence officer with display panel.

Commander Ambrose pressed one of the keys on his hologram monitor and the entire platform he was seated in floated up into the docking niche on the ceiling, intended to provide a way to exit the platform as well as serve as an area where he could conduct business in private. He pressed another key on his desk which switched on the video monitor, showing a streaming image of a profusely sweating and panting middle aged man, wearing a torn, stained, and in some places burnt suit.

"Takeshi, can you explain to me what the hell is going on?" demanded Commander Ambrose.

Vector Industries Miltia Branch Headquarters - Third Division Office
Miltia Metropolitan Area 3

T.C. 4573 - 21:00 Hours
Day - 1 of Miltian Conflict

"Commander Ambrose..." said Third Division Chief Engineer Takeshi nervously. "We are still trying to ascertain the cause of this...Uprising..."

Takeshi shifted himself uncomfortably in his chair. Commander Ambrose's stared down at the weak man, making him flich. Takeshi swallowed hard. "I actually have a hunch that this was caused by some sort of computer virus...Or some malicious programming from inside the corporation...I myself don't have the authority to call for a full investigation...Not with this fiasco going on..."

"I see...This is a secure line...Please explain everything you know to me." said the Commander.

Takeshi shifted himself again in his seat. He was still uncomfortable being the attention of such an important and imposing figure as Commander Ambrose. "Well...My position here as Chief Engineer of Third Division is limited Very limited .All the power, especially in emergencies, is situated with Vector CEO Wilhelm, and is passed down through all the departments and etcetera."

Takeshi cleared his throat. "If I may be so bold as to speak informally to you..."

Commander Ambrose nodded, knowing that it is difficult for some people to easily and fully explain themselves in certain circumstances.

"Being Chief Engineer of Third Division doesn't mean squat in the company chain of command. But as Chief Engineer, I have my own friends in our circles of the lower chain of command...We have our own sources and intelligence. My sources say that there has been a power struggle between Vector and the U-TIC organization and this situation might just be an attempt by U-TIC to sabotage Vector...I don't have the details, but this has been one of the more prominent rumors that has been floating around."

"I see...What other information can you provide me?" said the Commander.

"Well...There's this other rumor...That there's this project...U-DO...Highly top secret...It began coming up at the same time we've been having problems with the Realians and after the rumor about the power struggle...How U-DO relates to this current situation is still beyond my knowledge."

"Is that all? Do you have any other sources that you can direct me to?"

"No...I've been trying to contact them all this time, but I'm not receiving an answer...And as you can see from my condition, I just barely escaped from the Vector Realian Development Factory, before it was over run..."

"Ok...I get your point...Just keep me updated with more informa..."

Before the commander could finish his sentence, the monitor in front of Takeshi shattered as several sub-machine gun rounds blasted apart his desk, causing the man to fall backwards on his chair and onto the ground. The Realians had started to shoot through the sound proof barriers that separated the various offices and cubicles in the office, and it was only then Takeshi knew that the Vector Headquarters was under siege, both from the inside and out.

Before he finally lost consciousness, his last thoughts were skewed by scenes of Realians fighting back Vector Security Guards and forcing them out of the office they were trying to protect, and watching his fellow colleagues being mowed down as the Realians advanced forward. Takeshi also wondered why the alarms didn't go off...Probably because the Realians might of somehow figured out how to shut the system off...Or...Probably because...No...Someone from the inside...But there's three people that could...No...

The Vector Miltia Area Headquarters was quickly taken over by Realian forces. military and police reinforcements arrived but were unable to prevent the rogue Realians from overruning the entire complex. The police and military swiftly gathered all the survivors and quickly rushed them to the safe zone in Miltia Metropolitan Area 2, the Commercial Zone.

Emergency City Command Bunker - Chancellery Building

T.C. 4573 - 20:00 Hours
Day - 2 of Miltian Conflict

"Commander Ambrose...We just got word from the outpost in MM-8 (Miltia Metropolitan Area 8), the residential bloc is completely under Realian control...Realian forces are slowly advancing through area by area, at this rate, they will be in control of all level 1 and 2 residential blocs in a matter of days if not a whole week. They seem to have spread from the Industrial zones outward..."

"Taking over the Residential zones knowing that those areas would be easiest to capture...Then they'll move onto the Commerical zones and..." said one of the generals sitting next to Ambrose.

"Slowly moving towards the Core...Predictable..." said Commander Ambrose, who stood up from his seat at the round staff table. "I need to speak with Chancellor Kenshin in private...Please excuse us."

The other men, obviously high ranking officers nodded in acknowledgement and stood up and filed out of the dim room, only illuminated by a gigantic hologram image of the planet Miltia floating in the center of the circular table. An aged man slowly emerged from the shadows in one of the corners.

"Chancellor..."

"Yes, I know..." replied the man in a calm voice. "If we can't stop them by the time they reach the edges of the commercial zone, we'll be as good as dead."

"Yes, sir." said Commander Ambrose.

"It seems we have exhausted much of the available options we have left..." sighed Kenshin, as he emerged into the soft glow of the transparent floating orb. "Commander...You served under my father, Keiji...What would he have done?"

"I am not completely certain...He was very...In my opinion...Very bold and unpredictable...But a master tactician and strategist...With nerves of steel."

"Yes, I know..."

"If he were in your position...He would have already made preparations to evacuate the city...The Second Miltia Colony has already announced that they were ready to take refugees...And Aquino Space Port has already been secured and has transports at the ready for immediate evacuation."

"I understand...Is it already a loss...It has only been...What? Less than 2 days???"

"The Realians were able to overwhelm the forces in most of our heavy weapons facilities from the inside...We are left with the bulk of our Space Forces, but in terms of land, air, and sea forces...We are limited with what we have scattered around the Core, National Guard bases in the nearby MMAs, and the bases that unfortunately are in the outlying territories around Miltia that aren't in the current path of the rogue Realians."

"Hmmm...Issue the evacuation order...I want sweeps of the entire city...Even the Realian infested areas...I want to get as many humans out of here as soon as possible...I will be the last to leave...Got that?"

"Y...Yes, sir." said Ambrose, knowing that he isn't in the position to question a direct command of the Chancellor in this dire situation. Ambrose bowed and exited the room, issuing the orders to the military officials who were waiting outside the door.

Kenshin looked down at the black floor, his expression that of a man who has lost almost everything. Thoughts of how and why this is happening ran circles in his head. He shook his head vigorously, attempting to get the distraction out of his head and to focus. He slowly lifted his head, until his eyes met the glowing globe in front of him. His capital city Miltia stood out red, growing larger and larger as every minute passed.

Intersection of 5th and 7th Street - Commercial Zone 3
Miltia Metropolitan Area 7

T.C. 4573 - 13:00 Hours
Day - 5 of Miltian Conflict

Several large A.G.W.S units marched up to the crudely made barricade, made up of flipped over cars, bus stop benches, and the surrounding hedge planters.

"Commander Palluth...What are our orders?" said the pilot of the lead AGWS unit, whose voice was amplified over the external loud speaker.

"Set up the heavy machine gun over there..." said the commander as he pointed across to the other end of the barricade that closed the gap between the street and a nearby derelict department store. "And set one up the rest or your group spread out with the infantry."

"Yes, sir." said the pilot before he marched away, giving orders to the other men in his unit.

Commander Palluth looked back down to the map that was in front of him. He looked at the strategical map of the city. Around The Core were drawn in several red arches in several key intersections and streets signifying the various defensive barricades that provided the second to last line of defense. His current position was the must important because it was situated in front of the weakest section of The Core, the still underconstruction East Wall. Palluth's barricade was therefore the most heaviestly armed, with several mobile machine gun turrets and a unit of AGWS mechas. Commander Palluth nodded to himself...This'll hold...It has to.

Fatigued from looking at the glowing panel that displayed the map, Palluth looked up from the map and briefly caught a glimpse of two brief flashes of light from the office building across from him. Just then several men around him started falling, bullet holes to the head and heart.

"SHOOT! SNIPERS! EVERYONE TAKE COVER!!" yelled the Commander as he dove behind the car he was leaning over, at the same time grabbing the map from the hood of the car. "FIRE AT WILL!"

Palluth opened the car door and pulled out his grey assault rifile from the passenger's seat of the car. "Ok...5 years...Let's see if I still got this thing..."

He took aim at the two windows where he saw the muzzle flashes. As he looked through the sights of his rifle, he saw that the two snipers had just killed two more men at the barricade. Taking a deep he focused the crosshairs at the first muzzle flash and fired. Instantaneously he shifted over to the next window and fired again.

While the commander was preoccupied with the snipers, the whole barricade was lit up with the light of the hundreds of guns being fired at the approaching Realian swarm. The Realians had utilized the various riot gear and weapons from the local police station. The majority of these Realians were household or commercial models, not suited for combat and quickly fell from the barrage of fire coming from the barricade. The others that had utilized the advanced police gear were the local enforcement model Realians and military models from the Vector Realian Research and Development factory.

The battle raged on as thousands of Realians swarmed the barricades that surrounded The Core.

National News Network: Special Report
The Miltian Conflict

"The tenth day of the Miltian Conflict. The situation here in Miltia has grown beyond all previous calculations. The Realian swarm has, at this moment, engulfed the whole city, save The Core."

The camera panned out to the left and viewed a section of Miltia. Nearest to the bottom of the screen could be seen a section of The Core, the Core Wall, and past the wall was the rest of the city that was shrouded with darkness.

The screen split into two, showing both the news anchorman and the field reporter.

"The situation has been going on for ten days already...What is the current casualty list?" said the anchorman.

"We have reports from the Miltian Defense Force that there are currently over 800,000 dead and over 50,000 missing. But other sources, including the various humanitarian aid organizations situated here in The Core have concluded, at this point that there is a staggering...1,000,000 dead and over 60,000 missing. And these reports are just the statistics from the Metropolitan Basin...We have not gotten hold of the reports from outside of Metropolitan areas, outside of the city itself."

"I understand that there have already been attempts at evacuating the city?"

"Yes, there has been...But most of these attempts have failed...You see, the transports from the Aquino Space Port have been continuously shot down from the anti-aircraft and groud based anti-spacecraft artillery from the outlying bases around the city. We count 15 attempts in the past 36 hours...We are practically trapped here..."

Just then a large explosion erupted from the building across from the balcony the news team was based.

"****! What the hell!" yelled a man in the background as the video feed died, but the audio was still working, sounds of sporadic gunfire and cannon fire could be heard in the distance.

"Laura, what happened? Are you alright?" said the anchorman, who was now leaning over the desk, the several other anchors around him almost as surprised as he was. "Laura, can you hear us?"

"The...The Realians have started...Another attack on The Core...This...Ugh...Appears to be larger than the last..." stammered Laura. "The Realians...They're using the abandoned military AGWS units from the barricade defensive..."

"Incoming! Everyone get down!"

The audio feed was severed as a large Realian piloted AGWS came crashing down upon the building, completely destroying the West side of the building. The battle raged on as the Realians rushed the weakened East Wall, and used the flight capable AGWS mechs to harass and distract the defenders at other areas of The Core.

Emergency City Command Bunker - Chancellery Building
The Core

"Chancellor...We have to evacuate!" said an officer. "Sir!"

The Chancellor Keiji slowly turned around in his chair, that was facing a large monitor that showed a diagram of The Core and how the areas are being overrun.

"Chancellor!" repeated the officer. "They've already breached the main lobby."

The Chancellor, who was looking coldly and emotionlessly at the officer simply nodded. The young officer stood at the door and attempted to decipher the deadend man's nod and translated it as an acknowledgement. The nod was one of shock and despair. The Chancellor was so shocked at what was going on around him that he was not able to conjour up words to speak with.

"Sir...You must..." begged the officer. "We have your shuttle waiting for you...Please...You must hurry."

"Tom...Go on ahead..." said the Chancellor in an almost inaudible whisper. "I'll...I'll be there in a short while..." After these, he turned his chair around and continued to stare at the large monitor that was behind his desk. The officer, still unsure if he should plead again, quietly turned around and walked out of the room.

------

The riot of Realians breached the main doors of the inner lobby of the Chancellery Building and progressed inside into the building's large atrium. From the atrium, the corridors branched outwards like a spider's web for 20 stories high and another 20 stories below the main floor. It was only a matter of time before the Realians reached the Emergency Level.

"Dang it..." muttered Commander Philip, as he fired his rifle at the oncoming Realian mob that had reached the outer entry of the Emergency Bunker. "They just won't stay down! We need to pull back!"

"Commander Phil! Sir, the...The Chancellor is still in there!" said Tom, as he reached the barricade.

"What the!?!?" exclaimed the Commander, who briefly turned around to look at Tom. "I told you to get him out of there!"

"I...I...He said that he'll be right behind us...He told us to go..." said Tom, as several bullets whizzed past his head.

"I don't care! Just get him out of there no matter what!" yelled Phil, as one of his men was shot in the head and landed on Phil's shoulder. "Shoot, Mac, what the hell!"

Just then a military type Realian had managed to reach the barricade and was about to shoot when Tom lifted up his rifle and shot the Realian in the chest. He used the recoil of the gun to aim up at the Realian's head and took his shot, but missed when another soldier next to the commander killed the Realian. Bits of carbon and silicon and artificial blood had spread itself all over the front of the barricade. The now blank blue human like eyes of the Realian stared straight at Tom. Tom took several gulps and then was yanked downward underneath the protection of the barricade as a low yield explosive device detonated several feet away from them.

"You better be careful next time, soldier." said the Commander as he looked back up from the protective shielding and armor of the barricade. "Come on...We've gotta pull back..."

"But what about the Chancellor?" asked Tom.

"Go with Biggs and Daniel and evacuate the Chancellor...We'll meet up at the space port..." said the Commander quickly and then knelt up and went back to firing at the approaching Realians, many of whom had now utilized the metal front desk at the Bunker checkpoint as cover.

Tom, motioning to two men beside him to follow him, crouched down and slowly made his way back to the Chancellor's office.

"It's only a matter of time..." said Kenshin to himself. Slowly, he turned around and switched off the monitor that displayed the various sections of the city, many of which were burning or were already smoldering ruins. "If...If only..."

He sat down at his desk, just when a long knife had just impaled him from behind. The blood soaked knife ripped through the several layers of leather and seat cushion that comprised the back of his chair.

"Don't bother with the gun, Mr. Chancellor..." said the assasin slowly.

Kenshin, who had felt the presence of the man moments before, had already started to reach for the gun that was secured underneath his oaken desk.

"What is this...You're no Realian..." said the Chancellor, who still had his hand on the gun. "Who...Ugh...Who are you?"

"Just a messenger...THEY have deemed that this regime has become...Obsolete...It was always week and pathetic..."

"Is...Is that so..." said Kenshin, who had pulled out the gun from its latchings.

"And the artifact you possess...It will go back to its rightful owners..." said the assassin. Seeing that Kenshin had begun to pull out the gun, he twisted his knife, causing the Chancellor more pain.

Just as the assassin lifted a second knife to the Chancellor's neck, the assassin's head burst into two as two bullet holes from Tom's rifle tore the unaware assassin's head.

"Biggs, Danny! Get the Chancellor! Hurry!" yelled Tom, leaning against the corner of the wall. "It seems that the baricade didn't hold!"

Gun shots and yelling could be heard from the far part of the hallway. Muffled explosions, probably from the low yield grenades that were issued to the guards dotted the continuous noise of constant rifle fire.

"Chancellor!" Hold on!" said Biggs as he lifted up the Chancellor's shoulder over his.

"He's bleeding badly...Tom, tell the evac-ship to prep the first aid." said Daniel as he carried the Chancellor's other shoulder.

"Right on it...Come on..." said Tom, reaching for the radio that hung from his belt and radioed the evacuation shuttle.
