Mirfakan Alphin Natasha Burkavik has formally rejected the Labule development plan put in place by her predecessor Petrovich Kolani, forsaking the saving of funds for a "mega starbase" and putting them instead into the building of a second fleet. She explained herself at a press conference yesterday, hours after her plan was published. "The Labule has no need of such a large facility at this time," she said. "The impracticality of the venture, combined with the insurmountable obstable of cost, leads me to believe that those funds would be much better applied to a second fleet to supplement our current twenty-six-ship combat force. Kolani's plan was visionary, but mine is realistic. By doubling the size of our star forces and building new, smaller, more efficient facilities, we will be much more able to meet the needs of our nation's defense now; not in the two centuries economists predict we would need to construct Kolani's monolith."
The construction of the second fleet is expected to begin within the month, and be completed in about five years. To facilitate the expansion, a new Labule shipbuilding station is expected to be built over the first half of that period.
