Ladies and Gentlemen, a message from President Raoul Milagros
The president, a tall man at 6'2", walks up to the podium while the national anthem plays. Before him are the assorted press corps and security personnel. His light olive-tone skin casts a contrast within his white plantation-style garb.
"Ladies and gentlemen, people of the press. I call this conference together to announce that we are starting our own space program. Solid fuel propulsion technologies have proven effective as we had launched a satellite into orbit, bearing a passenger of one ham on rye sandwich in a toaster oven. It circled the planet five times before it returned to Earth, where the sandwich was discovered to have been toasted." Murmuring from the press corps can be heard.
The president shuffles some papers in front of him, and arranges them. "Yes, it's true. A sandwich. But what now, you may ask? Now we're planning to send a manned mission into orbit. the plan calls for the same mission; circle the Earth five times and return. And so allow me to introduce you to the pilot." He gestures a hand stage left.
A monkey in a spacesuit is rolled onstage, wearing rollerskates. One of the reporters stands and shouts while pointing "He thinks he's people!"
"Indeed. This is Captain Chim, first stella-naut of the Sammich Islands Space Program. He's been trained in equipment operations and all that scientific mumbo-jumbo. His training will continue while our researchers construct the rocket for the mission. This is scheduled to take place in one year from today."
