Overheard at the Brig, a popular watering hole in the suburbs of Portland, Somerset:

Bartender: What'll ya have?
Customer: A lager.
Bartender: What kind, we have, [bartender proceeds to run through a list. Customer waves him off after the fifth one.]
Customer: Whichever one gets me drunk fastest.
Bartender: That's not a lot of help.
Customer: Well our rugby team needs it.
Bartender: They played?
Customer: Yeah. They lost.
Bartender: How bad was it?
Customer: 13-6.
Bartender: That's not too bad.
Customer: We didn't get a single try.
Bartender: A what?
Customer: I guess it's like a touchdown in gridball.
Bartender: You guess? You mean you don't know?
Customer: You get five points for one.
Bartender: Then how'd our team get six points?
Customer: Two penalties.
Bartender: Penalties? Tries? Now you're confusin' me. [Hears another pattron calling for a beer.] Uh, excuse me. [Walks toward customer with a nearly imperceptible shake of his head. After he comes back, he quizzes the customer who was watching the game.]
Bartender: Well, who's our best player?
Customer: Hard to tell, but tonight it was Mike Cole.
Bartender: Yeah, well. Come back and talk to me when you know a little more about rugby. Here's your beer.
Customer: It's flat and it's warm.
Bartender: Shut up or I'll put you out on the street!

"My Lord, our Rugby Union team has travelled to Aust and been outscored by thirty-four points to sixteen."

"Aust?" the Minister for Sport was somewhat confused, "I thought that Lethislavania and Cockbill Street-" he took a moment to spit dryly onto the carpet "-were hosting this Cup?"

"They are, Lord van Honjiik," the lackey replied, "but this time they are holding qualifiers, and the top two teams in each of the four Groups will go to the Rugby World Cup."

"Wait a moment," Rikaard Van Honjiik said, grabbing a piece of paper, "but they have only nineteen teams in these qualifiers... and in four groups... that means only eight teams go to the World Cup!"

"Correct, my Lord."

"What kind of mockery of a sham of a charade of a tournament are they running, here?"

"I couldn't say, my Lord."

"Well, tell the Flankers to hustle a bit more, and give the Wingers and Centres some more tackling practice," Rikaard turned, "oh, and see if you can fnd the use of a stadium somewhere, a football one will do. We need to accomodate these teams."

"Yes, my Lord."

Island Eruptions

Boyle Islander Fans were enraged by their teams performance in their 15-9 loss to Ognivo. One fan I spoke to siad that the performance "was not one of domestic champions". The most common complaint amoung the Boyle Faithful was the lack of disipline in the team. One fan we spoke to said that "the teams performance today was unacceptable to a team with such a strong History". Head Coach Greg Franks said that their is going to be a major reshuffle in the team. He said "Yes, We did not look look like champions. Yes, today was a dark day in the teams History, but the fans must remember that this is our first time in the competition and should cut the team some slack, some players gave it their all and those who didn't will have some explaining to do. Mayor changes are expected if we are to progress from the group".

Street Run Over Kelssek, Danieljoh
151 Points In Two Games

What a start. Cockbill Street are reigning champions of this sport, granted, but absolutely no one could have predicted the routs the Streetians have been on so far. They've been getting running practice and not much else, at least in the match against Danieljoh, where their defense decided to be completely sloppy and Seecham, Ivansson and Bearthrower ran in nine tries - and then Ivansson kicked nine conversions, a perfect record. We'll allow him a penalty slip-up. They scored one hundred and five points anyway.

Despite the disappointingly poor defense they have faced, Cockbill Street have made the most of it. Some beautiful passing plays led to five tries against last year's quarter-finals, Kelssek, who were supposed to be the best team in the group. The Street whacked them out 46 to 6. With the matches left being newcomers Boyle Islanders, who's lost two out of two, Ognivo Expressen Atma, the Lovisan team who got their first win in the Rugby World Cup ever against Boyle Islanders, and East Lithuania, whom we beat 20-7 at the last RWC - a victory that enabled us to get past the group stage in the first place - the Street is now expecting five wins from five and an easy quarter-final draw. Hopefully we won't get anyone from group 1, which looks like a nightmare - the third-placed, fourth-placed and quarter-finalist from the last World Cup, plus Liverpool England who nearly made it, and promising newcomers Sarzonia and Artassen.

"Seven Tries, pinpoint 100% place-kicking from Khanasan, plus a few players just plain taking the piss with Drop Goals.

"A Hat-Trick of tries from Jongbloed, One from O'Brady, a pair from Melchior and one superb Try from de la Heurta gave Starblaydia a massive 79 point total in their match against a totally unknown side, Artassen. Seven perfect Conversions, plus a massive Seven penalties and three Drop Goals from Raffiki, Furion and Tumunzahar added to the demolition.

"A total of ninety-five points from the two matches stands the Fourth-Placed team from last time in good stead, being second-equal for total points so far."

<That's a great report, Sven,> his editor said on the other end of the phone, <we'll be sure to use it.>

"Great, Bob," Sven replied, "I think Starblaydia might go all the way again this time, as long as they don't meet their bogey-side Aust RFC, who beat Vilita today in a tough..."

<Sven. Shut Up.>

Up In Arms

The shake-up in the Boyle team has seemed to do nothing but make the team worse. After losing 64-23 to Kelssesk, many exports now believe cup progression to be beyond Boyle this year as they have to win their next 3 matches, including a game against in form Cockbill Street. Head Coach Greg Franks has made some disasterous dicisions in the cup so far and many are starting to believe he may be past his prime, being aged 67.
The team is starting to lose it's loyal supporters as nearly have the Boyle crowd left with 20 minutes to go with the score being 61-10. If Islanders can't put some results together soon Franks should really consider the prospect of forced retierment.

Lydia Messier, a newswoman who rarely got a sports assignment, was in the infamous Stardust Bar in the seediest part of Woodstock to do a package on the small, but loyal fanbase for the Galaxians. She had the storyline all worked out. They were a small, but fiercely loyal bunch. Some of them knew little about rugby, but they were enthusiastic. They were steadfast in their support despite a team with zero chance of winning a game.

However, she wasn't prepared for the scene at Stardust. The Galaxians held Liverpool England to 17 points and actually pulled out a win thanks to a drop goal by Mike Cole in the waning seconds of the match. Instead of her standard opener where she talked and then introduced the scene, she decided to let the bedlam that ensued be her opener.

The camera flashed to a picture of Galaxian supporters cheering, screaming, and hugging each other like their lives depended on it.

"Sarzonians aren't known for their displays of affection toward one another, but on a night like this, you can understand what the exception to the rule is."

The Galaxian supporters chanted, "Cole, Cole, Cole!" as if their chanting his name from the beer soaked pub would coax the young star of the Galaxians from the locker room for an interview and a curtain call. Almost as if on cue, Cole made his way toward the sideline reporter and the crowd erupted at the sight of his cherubic features dominating the screen.

"That's the man right there," one fan said in a drunken stupor. "That's the man. Marry me!" The reporter gave him a look. Marriage meant nothing in Sarzonia; benefits for both same-sex and opposite-sex couples came from civil unions rather than marriages, but the expression still held its old meaning.

"Not you, darlin'," he slurred in the direction of the reporter. Then, in a grand gesture, he pointed at the screen while Cole was still talking. "Him!"

The graphic showed an interesting statistic. Cole scored the first try in Galaxians history in the 23rd minute, breaking a 3-3 tie. He converted both penalties for Sarzonia. Clearly, he was setting himself up as the best player on the team.

"He's real savvy," another fan said when asked about Cole. "I'd swear he played rugby all 's life." The reporter shook her head. He only took up rugby four years ago.

"I'm Lydia Messier, and you are live at the Stardust Bar in Woodstock where you see the bedlam after the Galaxians pulled off a shocking 19-17 win over Liverpool England in the Rugby World Cup. Fans have been on their feet since the start of the match and this place erupted when Mike Cole scored a drop goal with time winding down for the victory.

"Back to you in the studio Ernie."

"And you're off."

"Whew," Messier said. "I don't ever want this assignment again."

East Lithuania Off To Awsome Start!!

3-0.... can you believe it? 3-0 is the record of the East Lithuania Sea Dragons as they demolished the competition and have been a great team in the group stages of the RWC 3, and a great chance they will be making it to the next round if they keep this up. We'll have to wait and see.

"Highest score of the day, guys," the Coach said, "nice one."

"Except for Aust," his assistant reminded him.

"Most tries scored?"

"Nope," the assistant said, "Aust got Eight.

"Bugger!" The coach threw down his clipboard. "What did we do best at?"

"Well, joint-top percentage of Tries converted, at One-hundred percent," the assistant went on, "well done to Magnus for that, and to the scorers for touching down in the right places."

A small ripple of applause went around the training pitch.

"We're not the best in every department, Coach," said the Assistant again, "but we're up near the top in every department. Which is putting us in good stead for progression."

"Kaze Progressa?"

"No, progression. To the next stage."

"Oh right."

I was late for work. I rushed out of the house and nearly slammed into an old lady crossing the street in my rush to catch the Woodstock Metro. I lucked into a window seat on the subway train and was on my way. I saw the graphic display show brief snippets of the daily news as I fought my lack of sleep from working on the reports.

"Okay, New demands by Generia," mmm, okay. "President denies wrongdoing in war plans," yeah right, that moron Sarzo was behind everything. "PIW stock up in heavy trading," eh, what else is new? "Stars lose 2-0 to Kaze Progressa in World Cup," no surprise there. "Galaxians defeat Vilita/Turori 22-18 in Rugby World Cup action," mmm.

Suddenly, I snapped awake.

"We WON?!"

"Shhh," a mother sitting across from me with her toddler said as she was trying to soothe him.

"Yeah, we beat Vilita/Turori."

"How? I thought they were supposed to be one of the better teams in the world."

"They are. We've only allowed 48 points in three games. Mike Cole scored all our points against the Cat/Eel Things."

"But we've only scored 47."

"I guess either we're good defensively or the other team's just fucking up more than we are when they play us."

"I guess."

I shook my head with a slight grin as I stared at the graphic display once again.

"Fleetwood Mac's Rumours breaks 50 million in sales[/i]. I don't care if Stevie Nicks is 200 years old right now. I still want to do things to her that'd make a hooker blush.

The train sped off into the morning as I rumbled toward destiny.

"Great, boys," the Coach said, "a resounding victory against those Vilitans. But, we conceeded two penalties." He looked around his players on the training pitch. "Now, who can tell me what those penalties were for?"

"One was for a high tackle, Coach," Melchior said.

"Good spot, Melchior," the Coach said, "considering it was you who did the high tackle and got sin binned for ten minutes. And just how high did you tackle that Vilitan?"

"Um, around the ears, Coach." Melchoir looked at the ground and shifted his feet.

"Exactly. That's a bit high. Try the shoulders next time. Right, now what was the other one for?"

"I did a late tackle on a kicker, Coach," said Septimus Furion, "He kicked the ball up in the air, then I ran over to him and tackled him to the ground."

"And just how far away were you when he kicked it?"

"About ten metres."

"Exactly. Very late tackle. Don't do it again. Unless its against the Austs!"

East Lithuania Qualifys Yet Again!

For the second year in a row, East Lithuania Sea Demons Move on to the playoffs... this time with a perfect record of 4-0. This year, however, East Lithuania hopes to move farther then the first round, as last year they were completely destroyed by some church. This is hopefully differant, as Couch Feno hopes to take this team all the way to the finals. That will have to wait, because first they have to make it passed the first few rounds.

Oliverry qyualifies in their first Rugby World Cup!

Today is a great day for Oliverry, they qualified for the Rugby World cup. It wasn't a great group with only Lethislavania having an automatic qualifying. All the other 4, including Oliverry, could qualify in any way. But Oliverry turned to be the best of the others and won a spot into playoffs. So, congrats to Oliverry!

Streetians Take Grand Slam In Rugby
300 Points From Five Games

The Cockbill Street rugby team are defending champions, granted, but surely no one could have expected this rout. They have scored three hundred and five points in the group stage of the rugby world cup, pouring in a total of twenty-eight tries - and if you consider that the match against Ognivo Expressen Atma was try-less from the Streetians, and they still won 21-10, the score was moderately impressive.

Still, no one doubted the Streetians' ability to qualify for the quarter-final stages. It is from here that the work really starts - to retain the trophy that the Streetians have made theirs, the only one in the history of Streetian sports. With some of the toughest opponents such as Sarzonia, V.T.R.E.C.T. and Liverpool England eliminated from the toughest group in history, Cockbill Street may have an easier charge than expected, but it still won't be easy with the Starblaydis hungry for a trophy and hosts Lethislavania being unbeaten so far.

Time to go Home for Boyle

Boyle gained salvaged pride as they bet Danieljoh 26-20 in the bottom of the group battle in what has been seen as a dismial season. Both teams have been terrible this season and will do well to even qualify for the competition next time. Head Coach Gregs has been given given his marching orders and the Boyle Islanders will now statrt their search for a new mananger.

Quite strangely, the top three in the groups of 6 go through, while the top 2 in the groups of 5 have gone through

Thus creating ten matches the next round, so five teams to go through.... eh?

Or, we're now in one big group of ten. Which is much better

[OOC: If we're going to have the system of 10 playoff teams, we could do it one of two ways:

1) Play-in round (first round) of playoffs: The seventh seed v. the 10th seed and the eighth seed vs. the ninth seed. Winners make it to the quarterfinals with the higher seeded first round winner faces the second seed while the lower seeded first round winner faces the top seed.

2) Top two seeds get a bye in the first playoff round. Third seed v. 10th seed, fourth v. ninth, etc. Reseeded after first playoff round.

Otherwise, it's a mess.

Starblaydia Progress Directly to Quarter-Finals
Just shy of 300 points in 5 games, looking to face The 'Street in Semis

Game 1: Aust RFC [34] Starblaydia [16]
Coming almost before the Starblaydi broadcasters were ready, Starblaydia kicked off the Third Rugby World Cup against the team that defeated them in the Group Stage and Third-Placed Play-Off some four years ago. Though Jools Sturmdrang broke through for a try, converted by Magnus Khansan, Aust RFC more than doubled Starblaydia's scoreline, setting them up for an openong-game defeat despite a pair of Khanasan Penalties and a Cam de la Huerta drop-goal.

Game 2: Starblaydia [79] Artassan [16]
A near-immaculate performance form Starblaydia, so we thought, completely destorying the unkown men of Artassan in Game 2. A Hat-Trick of tries from Jongbloed, One from O'Brady, a pair from Melchior and one superb Try from de la Heurta gave Starblaydia a massive 79 point total in their match against a totally unknown side, Artassen. Seven perfect Conversions, plus a massive Seven penalties and three Drop Goals from Raffiki, Furion and Tumunzahar added to the demolition.

Game 3: Starblaydia [49] Liverpool England [13]
Starblaydia continued their momentum from Game 2 into their third match against Liverpool England, more know for their Association Football ability than their Rugby Football ability. Thankfully, the Englanders showed very little interest in actually tackling the Starblaydi players, allowing four converted tries, four penalties and three drop goals. Magnus Khanasan had a Man-of-the-Match performance as he scored one try, along with all four conversions and the three drop-goals. Khuzdul, Verdi and Jongbloed scored the other touchdowns for the win.

Game 4: Starblaydia [52] Vilita [6]
The only low-points of this match were the two penalties, conceeded by Melchior and Septimus Furion, that allowed the Rugby Eel Cat Things to get points on the board. A brace of tries from Sinnikar, and one each from Calamari, Melchior and O'Brady led to three conversions from Khanasan. The five Drop-Goals, on the other hand, were done exclusively by backs who couldn't be bothered to try and out-run the Vilitans, saving their energy for the next match.

Game 5: Starblaydia [97] Sarzonia [22]
Starblaydia completely unloaded on regionmates Sarzonia, who could only really retaliate with a flurry of stamps and fists, in one of the roughest and some say dirtiest games so far. Three distinct fights broke out at various times in the 80 minutes as Starblaydia managed to run in eight tries, just missing the magical 100-point barrier by three points, thanks to a charged-down drop goal in the final seconds. This also left Starblaydia just seven points short of a magic 300-point barrier over the five games, only breached by defending World Champions Cockbill Street.

Starblaydia's Rugby Team now await the winners of Ognivo Expressen Atma Versus Phallahstine in the Quarter-Final. One would assume Starblaydia would fail to slip-up there, and then go one to hopefully meet and defeat Cockbill Street in the Semi-Final, though they would have a tougher Quarter-Final game in the winners of Sarzonia Versus Oliverry. From there, who knows? Hosts Lethislavania, second-placed team Crystilakere or even bogey-team Aust could await Starblaydia in what will hopefully be the final, making thios the strongest Rugby World Cup ever. From three attempts.

Phallahstine Go Limp
Starblaydia Meet World Champions, should be the Final

Game 6 - Quarter Final: Phallahstine [12] Starblaydia [127]
Looks like we were really taking the piss in this one, as Starblaydia notched up more points from Drop-Goals in the first half that Phallahstine managed in the entire match. Each of the tight-five managed to drop-kick the ball between the posts, when they really could have just smashed their way through and scored five, rather than just three. Ten tries, seven of those converted, along with seven penalties means Starblaydia cruise onto well-over four-hundred points in six matches, which is pretty darn good.

Now, though, comes Starblaydia's biggest test in of this Cup. As Aust RFC face East Lithuania in what could be considered the weaker of the two Semi-Finals, Starblaydia take on World Champions Cockbill Street. If there ever was a chance for Starblaydia to win a World Championship in a sport other than Ice Hockey, then this can surely be it.

Street Swamp Oliverry
Ivansson Go On Strike

Twelve tries. Twelve. Cockbill Street are still making a mockery of the newcomer nations in the Rugby World Cup, and in the quarter-final against Lethislavania, the Streeters scored a total of ninety-nine points, including twelve tries, seven penalties, and six drop goals.

The Streetian team has hardly met class opposition in this tournament, and one wonders whether the world of competitive rugby is becoming so small that the "World Cup" is just a facade. With other results including a farcical 127-12 win for Starblaydia over Phallahstine and East Lithuania's 92-13 second round drubbing of _Taiwan, one could almost say that the tournament starts tomorrow and this has just been some warm-up matches. The Streetians need to overcome complacency, though - although they have beaten Starblaydia before, this semi-final match will be the toughest Test for the Streetian rugby for the past two years. In fact, one could make an argument that these two are the strongest sides currently - Starblaydia took their group well ahead of Aust, have been thoroughly decent throughout, and with their 127 points passed the Streetians' total tally in this tournament - the Starblaydis have 430 points, the Streetians a meagre 404 from their first six matches. No one else is anywhere near that, and the Austian side who took third place at the last Rugby World Cup, struggled to beat New Islington 20-15 in the second round. They impressed defensively in their 40-3 defeat of Lethislavania, though, and will probably romp past the East Lithuanian side.

Semi-Final Defeat Again for Starblaydia
Woeful Kicking Mars Wonderful Rugby

Game 7 - Semi-Final: Starblaydia [18] Cockbill Street [19]

Over the past couple of Rugby World Cups, Starblaydia have gained somewhat of a reputation for high-scoring and lethal finishing in their Rugby Union side. And so it proved again in this Semi-Final as Starblaydia ran in Three tries to their opponents' One.

Unfortunately for Starblaydia, it was the World Champions' kicking game that put them through to a second consecutive Semi-Final, converting their only Try of the match along with two penalties and a pair of Drop Goals. Magnus Khanasan, on the other hand, failed all three of his Conversion attempts, managing only to give Starblaydia Three points, which didnt prove enough come the end of 80 minutes. Two points were the difference between losing this game and winning it. The difference between a World Cup Final and a measly third-place play-off.

Still, at least Starblaydia get an oppurtunity to avenge their 4th place last time, inflicted upon them, at home, by Aust RFC.

Street Make It To Final
Ivansson Kick Starblaydis Into Misery

What a rugby match. Finally, or should one say semi-finally, Cockbill Street got challenged by a decent team, in what must be the highest-class rugby game of the World Cup so far. Tight and exciting all the way to the end, the Streetians chose a fairer line, letting the Starblaydis through for tries at times instead of taking the penalties and sin-binnings.

That resulted in two tries being conceded to Khanasan and Lucretior within the first ten minutes, but luckily, Magnus Khanasan failed both of his conversion attempts, leaving the score at 0-10. The Streetians did not despair, but fought back with good, fine kicking. Ivansson had given himself half an hour in the rain after the Oliverry match, while his teammates were celebrating the 99-9 victory, to train on kicking - it looked rather special to watch a dwarf trying to kick a ball over the bar in the rain! However, it worked - first he kicked a penalty when Tumunzahar fouled Thomson in the scrum, then the Streetians ran in their only try of the match through McIntosh as he came free on the left-hand side and Ivansson kicked the conversion over for 10-10. That was the half-time score, both teams moderately pleased.

Starblaydia started the first half as well as the first, Raffiki running in their third and final try of the day through the middle, but a gust of wind sent Khanasan's kicking off guard yet again and the Starblaydis had to be contented with 15-10. But Martin Woodsworth had other plans. He kicked a number of drop goals in the last Rugby World Cup, and with only one here, he wanted to increase his tally when he got the ball in a tricky position which looked to yield little. He surprised the Starblaydi defense, who tried to rush out on him, but did it too late - a drop goal it was, and 15-13. A few minutes later, Sturmdrang fouled Corundum as a last resort, and Ivansson calmly kicked the penalty - while Sturmdrang got a sin-binning. With 15 on 14, the Street took over possession, but failed to make it count - and somehow, they gave away a stupid penalty on ten yards, which even Khanasan couldn't miss. 18-16 and eight minutes to go.

A desperate situation for the Street. With little left to go, the manager took off some of the tacklers and brought on passing players such as Ivan Wrenwalk and Brian Doorwich - and it was Wrenwalk who became the hero. With ninety-eight seconds remaining on the clock, a Starblaydi side that stood man on man, side by side, ready to block the Streetian charge, Wrenwalk suddenly dropped the ball. The Starblaydis charged forward, but too late - Wrenwalk had already got boot on it, lofted it over Tumunzahar and O'Brady, and they could only watch as the ball sailed over the bar. 19-18 - a crucial moment - and the Streetians squeeze into the Rugby World Cup Final, where they will play East Lithuania, who held a clean defence to win the match against Aust by a comfortable 15-3 margin.

East Lithuania Take World Cup
Street Denied At Final Hurdle

Two years ago, the Streetians surprised the whole of the rugby-playing world (i.e. a few Starblaydians, some Austians, and some really weird Vilitans), by taking the Rugby World Cup final by a massive 16-0 against Dark Teutonia. Now, they were 1-5 favourites against East Lithuania, whose only real asset was their strong defence. That they proved again against Cockbill Street, who had run in forty-one tries in seven matches before this game - but it dried up. Nothing they could do mattered, the Streetians went try-less throughout the game, while East Lithuania had made it 15-3 at half-time by scoring two tries and a penalty. Little did it help that Ivansson went drop-goal crazy in the second half, slotting four goals between the posts (and missing three further attempts) - a penalty from the East Lithuanian centre-back in the sixty-fourth minute was their only point, but it was more than good enough to win the game 18-15. The World Cup final was closely fought and exciting - a thoroughly fine end to an otherwise slightly drab championship - and hopefully, the minnows of world rugby may be able to compete more in future tournaments.

(OOC: Sorry about this being so late...just felt that a score post wasn't really the way to end an RP thread)
