Machiavelli Station Opened

After many months of dilligent constructions, and years of development and research, the Dominion is proud to announce the opening of Machiavelli Station.
We hope that in acordance with the name, the ends will justify the means in the building of this new facility - that of establishing a waystation for not only the members of both our honorable alliances, Triumvirate and NDA, but any other nations in good standing who wish to make use of the station. Warehouse, laboratory, business, and living spaces are all available at reasonable 'per square foot' prices, each according to the needs and purposes of said space. (ooc: no, don't have prices knocked out yet.)
Things we will be working towards:
--Benign Research: Lab space, offices, unique antigrav environments, all in a central location to lodging and other living needs.
--Business Opportunities: Satelite/corporate offices, services, retail, you name it. With the capacity of this station, there will be many needs to be fulfilled. While Dominion businesses have been established, we by no means cover all bases, and believe that competition is a healthy aspect of business and trade.
--Trade Waypoint: Warehousing, transportation/shipping, transfer hub. Along with this, we have present a remote office for our own Trade Ministry to assist in smooth transitions and business arrangements.
--Residential Space: Several levels of options available, with all the amenities. Shopping, recreational facilities, job opportunities, and the rest, at your fingertips.
--Conferencing: Conference rooms, secure video/audio conferencing, hotel accommodations, catering, etc.
Machiavelli Station has been positioned at Saturn's L4 point, and will be watched over by Dominion forces using standard patrol parameters. Beacons will be set along the perimeter broadcasting polite notification and instructions
outlining standard entry proceedure. All ships entering can expect an escort of some sort for mutual safety. We wish to stress that this station is a non-military operation, and that while military vessels are welcome to dock, request assistance on repairs or medical issues, resupply food and fuel needs, and their crews more than welcome to stay and partake of any leave time there, we will not allow it to be used as a staging point for any aggressions.
All users and residents of this station will be subject to the same Dominion law while onboard as visitors would expect in visiting our nation, as we consider Machiavelli as an extention of our terrestrial holdings. There will be a Dominion government office through which any and all appeals will be handled. In keeping with our ideals and our past performance in dealing with disputes concerning international citizens, groups, or businesses, we will make every effort to work with the respective governments should any incident require it.
In hopes that this new venture will be a benefit to all, we extend our welcome to Machiavelli Station.

ooc: Yep. New place to play. Interested folks can use as basis for rp's etc, what have you - just intend this to be a fun sort of thing, and go along with what I've had in mind for some time (ever since I sold our Mars holdings, actually ... guess where the money went). Would prefer not a lot of rawring bs here and all, just the same. I'm leaving a lot pretty open, really. Just one more opportunity for folks to meet, greet, and mingle.

Re: Purchase of space upon Machiavelli Station.
Your Excellency,
To further cordial relations between nations in general, and to increase our possible markets in specific we would wish to purchase 4,300 square feet of commercial zoned space in a high traffic zone. We wish to use this area for office space for the representatives of our various concerns and a small European styled café. We feel that business opportunities may arise aboard your newly commissioned Machiavelli Station and feel that we must be fully ready in this eventuality. In conjunction with this we would also wish to purchase a quantity of bandwidth on the stations communications masts to place some of our own data streams.
Yours truly,
Peter Hule
Minister ZMI Department of Foreign affairs.
“Z.M.I. D.O.F.A., relations without borders.”
Ëtaros was doing his daily browse of foreign newspapers, reading reports from Knootoss, Menelmacar, and those of several other allied nations. He took a sip of wine that he reserved for breaks, and glanced at the clock in front of him on the hardy wall. Ten more minutes, and back to the grind. I need to get files on Borster, anyway. Pesky man, he is. Should've put an elf in charge of the EGN. He skimmed over the Knootian papers, some of which were blatant propaganda tools. The elf massaged his delicate ears as he read over reports of Knootian Colombia, and idly jotted a note to himself to write Galadriël about sending a delegation there to investigate the possibility of a consulate. Economic advantages... A quick glance at the clock again showed he only had three minutes left in his break, and he downed the rest of his wine. Getting up, he buzzed maintenance to come receive the glass and a dessert tray. Bending over, the elf was putting his bottle of Beaujalais red wine in a small cabinet when he heard footsteps coming down the hall. Ëtaros listened to the pattern of the feet and, within seconds, knew it was Liëssa Círyatan, his Consulacör of Foreign Affairs. Manwë forbid a new crisis comes to me...
After the needless knock on the door, he beckoned her to enter. She did, and was carrying several folders, one that appeared to labelled for him. He held up his hand promptly, as he just remembered the files on Borster. Grabbing the telephone, he contacted one of his secretaries, who promised to have the file up within thirty minutes. He then turned to Liëssa, who had been patiently waiting. She was all too used to her scatterbrained superior suddenly remembering things to do. He poured himself a glass of water as maintenance came in the room, and motioned for her to sit. She did, and poured herself a glass likewise. "So, what has interrupted your busy schedule today, my dear?" She rolled her eyes at him for the playful jab. The elf had been single for all 3,400 years of her life, and knew he was picking on her for it. "Well, it appears we've come across a new economic and diplomatic opportunity." He exhaled slightly, relieved that it wasn't bad news. You could never tell with Liëssa's body language -- she was the most trained and disciplined person on his staff.
He sipped lightly. "Oh? If it has anything to do with Haven, scrap it. Right now I'm only concentrating on the spaceports being constructed in Luin Anarórë and defending the colony's borders." She grinned. "You are so easy to fool. No, it has nothing to do with Haven, and little to do with the colony. It has something to do with the Dread Dominion and a new station they've constructed." She passed him two folders -- one that contained information, a detailed profile, and contact numbers for Dominion authorities, and the other which included pictures, background history of the surrounding area, and summarized why the station was built. He examined the contents of each folder carefully, commenting lightly here and there. She took to idling, sipping water, and answering questions he had. Finally, he finished, and closed the folders. At that moment, they were interrupted by his aide Roberta Mayaches, who apologized and handed him the files on Borster. "Thank you, Roberta," he said as she walked out of the door. As soon as it snapped shut, he looked to Liëssa. "You do realize the costs that are going to go along with this? Ilossë is already broiling over payments being made DragonStar and the FSP. Not to mention a new island we're planning to pay the Hack for constructing. The infastructure in Luin Anarórë is looking to be a helluva lot of money, right now. We simply don't have the resources at this time, Liëssa." He frowned apologetically, and looked into her eyes.
It was as if she had heard nothing he said. "With all due respect, sire, I feel that putting businesses, spacedocks, and other projects of economic value in Machiavelli Station will prove extremely beneficial. If we wait, we may not have another opportunity like this." He sighed. "I don't believe you heard me. We don't have the resources." She rolled her eyes. "What about taxes?" He looked at her curiously, almost to a degree of suspicion. "What about them?" She began rather hesitantly, but her will grew stronger as she continued. "Your Highness, with the utmost of respect, I feel that your financial planning policies have led us to the current dilemma we are in. There are no income taxes to collect from the people, and that has caused us a pain in the ass for the past five years. Perhaps you should consider raising taxes marginally." She looked into his eyes seriously and took a sip of water, never breaking her stare.
He wanted to be angered by her words, but he knew she made sense. The Erasat was still practicing as if it were isolationist, whereas in reality it was highly active in foreign affairs. He nodded. "I will take what you have said into consideration. At this time, however, we will not send the Dominion a comm-" She scowled. "It's now or never, Ëtaros, and you know it. The benefits of this will far, and I do mean far, outweigh the short-term consequences. We have brilliant minds in this government. You have a brilliant mind yourself. Find a way, because if you don't, there will be long-term consequences. Do not fail as your fellow world leaders have done in the past and think on a short-term philosophy. That is my final word." She was visibly agitated at this point, and spoke with the authority she did not have. He blanched. "I will not have you telling me what to do, dear. You are on my staff at my will. However, you make a good point. I'll think on it and call you later. Excuse yourself from this office, for I have not the time for blatant disrespect." She glared at him, turned, and stormed out. He angrily huffed, and began reading the files on Borster.

Re: Machiavelli Station space purchasing
It is my utmost pleasure to announce that the Etaran Erasat has seen vivid opportunities in Machiavelli Station, and find the rewards of holdings in such a grand structure very appealing. As your nation, we need room to expand and "loosen our belts," you could say. For these reasons, I am putting forth an application for a quantity of square footage on the station.
It is likely that Etaran businesses and corporations will seek to be placed in the structure, and we will send a limited number of Etaran citizens, namely employees in the career of foreign affairs, to Machiavelli Station. Also, the Erasat is looking to build a spacedock, as well as medical facilities. Lastly, we are hoping to construct a conference room for our residents upon the structure, and living quarters for those residents. We are hoping to have exact figures for you as soon as possible, as Etaran mathematicians and experts are currently trying to decide how much area should be devoted to any given space.
I am eagerly awaiting your approval of our claims, and we intend to pay the costs of this purchase over the span of a few years. Negotiations, of course, are open if you would like to arrange something else.
With thanks,
Liëssa Círyatan, Consulacör of Foreign Affairs

I'm also going to want some research space and room for an embassy. I should swing by so we can hammer out the details. How does a week from Friday strike you?

It probably doesn't come as a surprise that we're interested in your new trading station at Saturn-Sol L4. I'd like to arrange a small amount of residential space for us to station a junior diplomatic officer and a civil service staff to act as a consulate because if what I've been hearing from Legislator Kerrigan is any hint, several of our exporters and megacorporations are very interested in utilizing your station.
<<attachment to Foreign Ministry:
Additionally, hopefully a 'neutral' yet Dominion-controlled trade station sharing Saturn orbit will help ease the recent difficulties our respective peoples have been experiencing due to the unfortunate circumstances outside of our control. I do assure you that the current cooling has been due to a very small but very vocal minority and both Supreme Emperor Speaker-Rrit and I are doing everything we reasonably can to ensure that cooler heads continue to prevail. We understand that the situation has been difficult for both of our nations; however, both our peoples have endured far worse and will simply become stronger because of this.
Thank you for your consideration and level-headedness throughout all this; it is greatly appreciated. >>
You can probably expect requests from TME Industries and various small-business conglomerates shortly. Good luck in all your endeavors.

The reforming Imperial Crimmond is setting forth new initiatives for space, including the launch of the first interstellar class in years. To keep up with the demands of operations in Sol alone, the outer solar system has become a rationed and conservationist operation. Supply from the inner system to the outer system is small and is only done close to the asteroid belt.
We would be very greatfull to purchase docking space for our supply ships to refuel and resupply crew essentials, along with a supply waypoint office, so that the Imperial Fleet can oversee these operations and draw minimally on your assests.

That the Dominion accept the proposed settlement and the granting of shipping rights to the station meant riches to the already massive salvaging operations the Council overseed. Their commercial power, uncontested by the fact that no one else in the universe (or so they think) has the will to throw away their dignity and collect garbage to recycle as a living would extend through financial tentacles into the hearts of the gas planets in the system. Furthermore, foreign interest now dominated most of the Dominions' actions, even greater opportunities would be had from contacts within.

To whom it may concern,
The Council has found it very inconvenient that all of the planets in the system and their respective moons have been occupied; as such, there is no practical way for us to attain satisfactory real estate for our operations without breaking casus belli by hostile takeover or paying an impossibly huge sum. This longstanding crisis has become our justification to look to the waystation for our salvaging operations in the local area. Specifically, we are in need of a particularly large (the size is indeed optional, if the station is lacking such space) docking bay, warehouse space and offices to conduct our activies around L4; and are willing to pay any sum in rent you might see fit for real estate every annum. In addition, we are also interested in extending our trade by not only becoming a signatory to your recently announced Trade Network Association, but also by allowing our buisinesses to start routes from the asteroid belt to this station at your supervision. While, of course, you may or may not have much to object about in the interests of security and feasibility; our cause seems enough to weather such problems and open opportunities for the station. We hope that our message is recieved well. That will be all for communique.

We appreciate your interestin leasing space aboard Machiavelli Station. Such a placement should prove no problem, especially considering the rather circular design of the place. Any particular needs you may have in the way of office space may be sent ahead, or worked out with our engineering/maintenance crews once you begin fleshing out your internal designs. As for the bandwidth, I have been informed that may be possible as well, with the understanding that it too is leased 'property' of Machiavelli. Please find attatched the commercial lease agreement (http://home.mchsi.com/~ketri/wsb/links/lease.txt) and the additional lease contract for the proposed bandwidth useage. Once all the papers are in order and cleared, you will be free to begin shifting your people over. I take it your staff will be making their own arrangements for living quarters? If not, I'm certain some package deal could be worked out. If you have not, I suggest you familiarize yourself with Dominion Law* to make certain that there are no misunderstandings. We look forward to an Etaran presence on Machiavelli, and appreciate your interest there. You do realize that the extent of your proposed acquisitions seems to be rather large, and that this will run up your costs. First, we will need to know just what extent your needs are for the spacedock. Currently we are not selling any part of the station, nor space around it - we are merely leasing available space. We do have plans for expansion regarding peripheral structures, and indeed already have several nearing completion; something intended to assist more with larger ship servicing and corporate needs. We have medical facilities on site, however you are free to import your own so long as we can have on hand a detailed dossier on intent and overall facility operations. There are, after all, certain fields of research we would be less happy to have aboard Machiavelli. The conference room and quarters are of course no problem, and solid numbers should be available to you on cost once we have your final figures.

I'm certain that such arrangements can be made at a very fair price. Attatched are files detailing some of the residential options and basic overviews of the amenities that come with office space. As we're certain you are already well aware of Dominion Law, I shan't reference that material, though it will be available for easy access on station for reference, as well as basic Station guidelines and proceedures. We're all quite pleased to hear of the interest our new facility has been generating. We hope it will be a profitable venture for all of us.
An addendum as per your further missive, from Minister Ravanelli's office, and echoed by my own. The Imperatrice has kept us informed of the delicate nature of the current situation. The fact that some of our respective businesses and corporations have chosen to growl need not mean we need to with each other. Be assured that we do understand your situation, and hope that this will offer the opportunity to ease some of those tensions, as you've indicated. Different systems, different headaches to be sure. Let me extend our thanks as well for your efforts in all this, especially during a time of transition. I'm certain this is far from what you had hoped to be dealing with right off the bat. If there is anything we can do to assist, don't hesitate to ask. For what it's worth, you have our trust and support. God knows you've earned it.
I'll keep an eye out for those requests, and I look forward to continuing business with you.

To: Fleet Captain Andre Roussimoff
From: Bernardo di Medici, Dominion Minister of Trade
Captain Roussimoff,
Let me first say that we are pleased our facilities have caught your interest, and appreciate the offer for business. However, there exist a few minor complications we need straightened out before we can extend a lease option.
First and foremost, while we have no particular problem with ships picking up the usual supplies, we are more than a little concerned at the thought of entire fleets using Machiavelli for a staging point, especially those who have had no previous relationships with our own nation. If you could perhaps convey a more detailed view of the scope of your proposed operations, space required, and expected traffic volume, this would do wonders in assisting our offices as we attempt to assess the overall situation.
The second point is, as you may guess, a clarification that Machiavelli is not intended as a military outpost, waystation, or staging point - not for our own fleets, and most certainly not for others. Given the wording in your initial message, I'm not certain whether that was your intent or not, so I'm looking for further clarification there.
Thirdly, I wished to make you aware of one of the stipulations of using Machiavelli, and the surrounding Dominion-controlled space. It is not our intent that any fleets be present inside our patrol perimeter, other than those we have present for defense and assistance. Any large group of ships will be asked to enter on a rotation schedule to be assigned by Station Control, which given the traffic expectations, we feel is quite reasonable.
If you could forward on the requested information, I will have my people go over it and get back with you as soon as possible. We hope we can come to an amicable arrangement here.
--Bernardo di Medici
To: Councilor Alai Vasil'ev syn Ladyzhensky; Ministry of Merchantile Space Operation
From: Bernardo di Medici, Dominion Minister of Trade
Councilor Ladyzhensky,
In looking over your request, and given the scope you seem to be inferring, might I suggest one of our peripheral structures for your salvage operations? Given the size and nature of them, you will likely be sharing said structure with several other groups, but it would offer you your own sizeable docking bay along with attatched offices, warehousing space, and in some cases, minimal living quarters.
I realize you've signed on before we've completed arrangements, but I'll wait to hear back on this before moving forward on it.

Ilgiz Shipyard, Earth
T.C.S. Miroslav; "Glory of the Earth and Peace"
On the way to the smeltership, he read the dispatches. Profits on last year's salvage runs, good. The inner rocky planets' groups making lucrative mining operations, good. A copy of the smeltership's bill of lading that the officers had brought from the shipyard; good: two hundred and ten thousand pounds of equipment to be transported to the station. Luckily, the ship was ready-- though that wouldn't replace the men and the time lost while another ship was abuilding. The cargo of buisinessmen and staff for the operations will wakejump with the smeltership on departure. He worried, a year's profit'd be gone if the smeltership was hit by pirates; or worse one of the many privateers that infested the asteroid belt. Finally, he broke the seal on his banker's latter. He read it and exploded with rage.
"What is it?" His companion, the first mate of the ship, asked.
"Just an old pain. Nothing. It's nothing." He pretended to read the next dispatch while raging inwardly over the contents of the letter. "We regret to inform you that, inadvertently and momentarily, credit was overextended and there was a run on the bank, started by malicious rivals. Therefore we can no longer keep our doors open. The board of directors has advised we can pay half fraction on the credit. I have the honor to be, sir, your most obedient servant..." And we hold close to a billion of their paper. Five hundred million credits for a billion, and our debts close to four hundred million. We still win out, but it'd be hard to pay for the station's downpayment and rent now. Great Maker, I warned the staff not to put too much of the money in one bank. Not with all the speculating that was going on in the homeworld, not when a bank could issue paper in any amount that it liked. "But this bank's safe," they had said, "and we need the money in one block for collateral," and they'd gone on to explaiun the details of a complicated financial structure that involved numerous bonds and the national debt bonds, and in the end gave the semi-privately owned company an internationally safe banking position and a huge buying power for expanding the operations to Saturn. "All right." he had said, not understanding the intricacies but trusting that what the staff'd said was wise.
Now we're close to being broke.
Great Maker!
How to get cash? Our position's good--our standing good. Except there are jackals salivating at our heels. The inner planets' semi-private firms for one. The asteroid belt's mining firms for another. Did they start the run on the bank? Or was it the bastards in the asteroid belt? They have power enough and money enough. It's cash we need. Or a huge line of credit. Supported by cash, na paper. We'll be bankrupt if we risk the purchase, and at least then it'd be fine if the creditors fall on us. "Get financial division; tell The Council we need more capital to pay up the agreement, make sure it's in sovereigns."
The ships' crew was greatly unsettled by his pallor and the piercing luminous green of his eyes. "The gate. We're here." one of the officers said. Most of the crew had never been aboard a ship before, let alone a capital ship. The smeltership was one of the largest vessels in the merchantile fleet. She was huge--and armed with 78 coilguns on three gundecks. But most of them were unimpressed. They'd already seen the flagship and the cityship; they were much larger. Some of the others did not care for ships, and loathed space. They were afraid of the violence, danger and enourmousness of space. They were green.

The Ziggarat, Zone One, Megacity One, Earth
Peter sat in the depths of the restaurant, a pleasant fake Greek temple in ruins half engulfed in vines, circular dark synth wood tables dotted around the lush surrounds while the sounds of splashing water from the back wall were a water feature in the shape of a waterfall that fell the full huge height of the vast stain glass roofed room. It was one of 30 or so restaurants in the heart of the Ziggurat, helping to feed the tens of thousands of bureaucrats and government officials. Peter would have before he was a minister have taken the transit line out of the ziggurats confines down to the sea front, probably he thought reminiscing, to one of the small café’s that dotted one of the cities piers or promenades.
These days he would be flown directly to his chosen restaurant by armoured air car a flashing escort of Z.M.D.F. City Defence corp.division one troopers on skimmers flashing the other traffic out of the way. It was not exactly what Hule thought of as a relaxing repast, so he more and more found himself eating with his staff within the precincts of the Ziggurat itself. He had found the restaurants here on the outer tier to be a very pleasant surprise.
Looking up from his work and at this point tepid coffee accented by a few remaining pieces of salad on his plate he saw the table waiter drone begin to quietly clean the table. He then glanced back down and sighed while picking up his silver smart stylus and once more returning to his work, insubstantial smart dust screens slowly moving about the table seemingly playing an intricate game of dodge the waiter drone while he finished the letter.
Hule had always preferred to do his own writing, it was a pleasure he said that he would not give up to some jumped up drone or secretary, though in actual fact his secretary Roslin Price was a pleasant woman in her mid fifties who was god mother to one of Hules children. However at this point he was regretting his life long statements as he contemplated the long list of diplomatic communiqués he had in front of him.
On Hules flimsy words and data danced to his stylus while the smart screens showing demographics and possible diplomatic shifts flickered as he used his implant to alter their feeds or occasionally shut them down or open a new one. Far away a re-entry horn sounded in one of the industrial zones, echoing across the hum of the megacity as an Armed Trader started its landing run.

"So what is this?" Ambassador Bosska looked over the message relayed to him through the Guaah DiploCorp Offices. "Why are we so slow to get this maner of news?"
"Sir, we have to get our people to check every message for relevance to ourselves, who they pertain to, where the pertinent individuals are....."
Bosska waves his hand in the air dismissively. "Yes yes. Red tape, in other words. I must speak to the personnel people about this. Efficiency, not beauracracy! By the Pits, how did we get so bogged down in ourselves."
He keyed up his tele-screen, and looked past the monitor at his aide. "I'm composing a response. I expect it to be sent out immediately. No fact-checking; no red-tape. Understood?" The aide nodded silently, and Bosska settled in to go about his business.

Re: Machiavelli Station Leasing
Dear Minister di Medici,
It had finally come to my attention that your people have completed construction of your station. To say we are gladdened by this development is an understatement. In the spirit of this, we have looked over the leasing agreement, and find it reasonable. Attached to this missive is a description and blueprints of what I propose. Basically we would like a presence of some manner there, and we feel a multi-role structure would be in good calling.
It would entail being a hotel for our traveling dignitaries, a trade point and a diplomatic office all in one. Naturally it would need to be set up in a residential section. Should this be acceptable to you, we will sign the agreement and begin the process at your liesure.
May you walk on warm sands,

Camthalion Vardamir studied the lease agreement for some time. Nothing seemed particularly untoward or out of the ordinary. Smiling, he signed it and then turned back to his keyboard to type out a complimentary message.

From:Camthalion Vardamir, Commerce Minister, Menegroth Reborn
We most happily agree to the terms of your lease. Please expect some of our individual staff to make contact with members of yours regarding leasing personal residential apartments or about getting into contact with other leasees who have set up residential compounds of varying sorts. We intend to send Tári Nénharma to head our delegation upon the station.
As Vardamir attached the message to the signed lease, a young Noldor, one of the small Noldorin minority in Menegroth Reborn, knocked on his office. "Your Excellency?"
"Come in." Vardamir said good naturedly. "What can I do for you?"
The younger Elf laid a brief missive on his desk. "Her Ladyship wants this sent out when you send the missive on the space station."
Vardamir nodded. "Of course." As the Noldor left the room, he briefly glanced at the missive and blinked slightly at the authorship.

At the Empire's 'space city', Archduke Carl von Sachshausen, the Imperial Space Director, sat at his desk reading over the lease agreement. He sipped some coffee and made a few notes in the margin. Then he looked over the prospective budget that he, as he also was Regent, had been able to get a peek at before it was actually announced and approved by the Volksraad. He tapped his pen on the desk and looked pensively out the window.

Dear Sir and/or Madame,
We thank you for your interest in Machiavelli Station - businesses like your Muffin Corporation are part of what the station needs, given the projected traffic through here. I am curious to know the extent of your proposed lease. Would this be simply for warehousing and resupplying trade ships, is shop space desired as well, what is your expected rate of traffic for your ships, and how much space are you hoping to lease? Once we have more information, we would be happy to see what we can do to accommodate your needs.

Yes, it was a communicational error on our part. As for our projected needs...Our needs aren't terribly drastic. We were hoping just for a station at which our ships can dock as all of our trade outposts are very spaced out and fuel is rather costly. This would both improve and promote intergallactic and interplanetary trade among the Union.
We also feel that this could serve as a good opportunity to work with the countless other nations who are requesting the be leased part of the station.
I'm sorry I can't be more specific but it is more the potential this station has for us, rather than the immediate and serious need we have for it.
We anxiously await your reply,

I'm quite happy to comply, Signore Pellegrino. At the moment, there is a small consulate belonging to the Rayverr (the vesh pij verr) here in the capital. In our experience, the Rayverr are among the most polite and pleasant people I've had the pleasure of meeting. They're well-behaved when outside their compound, even for diplomatic staff; they're getting to be very well-liked by the population. I think I can safely say that they won't cause any problems for the local police, and we have seen nothing to indicate detrimental business practices. A summary of their known culture and social structure is appended to this message, as well as biological data that we've gathered. Please note that they do possess an sort of telepathy, but it does not seem to extend beyond their own species.
In terms of military actions, they recently waged a very successful campaign against a small, agressive nation known as 'Clemson Tigers,' one of the usual maniacal types that threatens to invade the entire planet. The Rayverr took control of several of the aggressor's surrounding subject nations. They've followed up with a massive revitalization program that looks to be very succesful, and our intelligence indicates the population has a high approval of their new friends. I've requested that the Office of Military Intelligence put together a report on what our ships observed during and after the fighting, and they will have it to your office shortly. Please feel free to request any additional data you may need.
I have been asked to note that, in the opinion of some members of our military and intelligence directorates, the Rayverr get along too well with others. While I feel this is overly paranoid, they do seem to have a few valid points. Most importantly is how there seems to be no resistence at all to Rayverr occupation in Cvechiokal even from the usual xenophobic bigots; they also point at our own serfs, who seem to have accepted them unusually easily. However, I believe that this is nothing to be worried about, especially given the current lack of hard evidence of wrongdoing. Rest assured that anything we learned will be shared with you and the TYSS.

Thank you for your consideration. Third-Daughter Green-Stone has taken this up with her contacts in Cetaganda and reviewing the aspects of your law; we assure you that any representatives from the vesh pij verr that we send will comply fully with all regulations and requests on your part.
While the vesh pij verr's current plan is to establish a small consulate for the greater vesh in time, doing so immediately would probably be untoward due to the fact that we currently have no diplomatic interest in the station beyond good business. That being said, we will be looking for space for representatives from Cvechiokali design bureaus and merchantile interests. They should not have any requirements far outside the norm; as lined out in your lease agreement, they can arrange any minor modifications their business needs themselves.
We do not require any industrial space; for now, we are only interested in commercial and merchantile space. If business is good we would like to see options in light manufacturing; however, this is conjecture at this rate. Attached to this transmission is information on how much space we desire, our planned staff, and our agreement to the terms of the lease pending cost information.
It is a pleasure working with you.

Greetings and good day! Our company, Tempest and Tempest Enterprises is a small privately owned space shipping business with an interest in adding your fine new station to our routes, and we are hoping to obtain further information about leasing station space as a hub from which to expand our shipping operations.
At present, the T&T Enterprises fleet consists of two Busu 2 Merchant class cargo ships, the Runabout and the Back Alley Wayfarer. In addition, we operate a number of smaller Hamakaze 370 shuttles for short in-system deliveries. We believe that it would be to our mutual benefit to establish a presence on board your station, possibly also to serve as a staging area for out-system deliveries.
Due to the inherent dangers of "on-the-cheap" space travel, our entire working staff consists of reploids, many former military. However, I can assure you that all of our staff members are well-disciplined and law-abiding members of Arpean society.
We also understand that few locations have the capacity to dock 5.6 kilometer long ships, and if that is the case here, we would be willing to fund any necessary modifications or special facilities required to accomadate our vessels.
Sincerely,

Dear Sir and Madame,
We are thrilled to have your business express an interest in a presence aboard Machiavelli. Considering the overall size of your cargo ships, I would think that one of the peripheral structures would serve your needs well. It does cost a bit more, true, but you will have your own dedicated bays and docking ports, as well as warehousing, office, and limited living quarters space. Given the extreme nature of the size, I would think that your own structure, as opposed to some of the larger shared peripherals, may be in order. If we could perhaps get a better idea of just how much space you will be needing, now that we know your other needs, I think that an amicable arrangement could be reached. We will most certainly be in need of any detailed specifications should they be more than what we currently have to offer, illustrated in the attached sample schematic files.
We have absolutely no worries concerning your citizens. The Dominion has always been pleased to associate with the honorable Arpeans - this will simply offer us another opportunity to do so. The usual guidelines and laws apply, which should be nothing to worry about, all things considered. I look forward to your response, and hope that we can work with you to provide what you need to see this project to fruition.

This should be most acceptable. Funds will be transferred from our nationalized merchantile institutions in Cvechiokal for a down payment and we can have our bankers arrange some sort of payment plan for the long-term. The vesh pij verr thanks you for your consideration in this, and would like to inquire if it wouldn't be untoward of us to join your trade association. Please find attached detailed listings as to prices dependant on usage (such as retail/storage/docking etc), and several of the options available at this time both on the main structure, and the peripherals. As for specs on our power systems, I have been informed that such details are not available at this time due to security concerns. Please rest assured that our systems are of the highest grade, and are indeed redundant so as to lessen the possibility of any sort of interruption or blackout, and are strictly maintained and serviced.
I hope that you will find the materials suitable, and look forward to the opportunity to do business with you.

ooc: Truth, I don't have exact figures on costs and such, as I'm just not brilliant enough to know exactly what sorts of costs ought to be included for such a venture. Suffice it to say, we're going to be looking to cover our costs and make a profit, but not at the risk of squeezing our buisness partners til it hurts. The only bits that will cost more than they ought will be any extras, and any luxury accommodations, as it should be. Obviously, the more you buy, the more it will cost, and any large-scale holdings will be at a premium.

Thank you for your prompt response, and there are several options that fall within our rrequirements, and budgetary allowances. We can well understand your need for security concerning the stations power systems, and gladly accept your governments assurances on the quality control and conditions.

(OOC - I haven't the faintest idea either - but defientely want to pay a fair and honest price - if you don't make enough to cover expenses, maintence usually suffers and as Mycroft is going to be sending a part of himself to live on the station he definitely wouldn't want his power supply interupted ( even if he does have back up ) ...)

My thanks for the expedient nature of your transactions. May I extend the thanks of the Dominion for your investment in our station. As for the Association, we would be pleased to have you aboard, and feel it would be an excellent opportunity for finding new markets. The information for accessing the databases is included at the end of this transmission. We look forward to working with you on both fronts.

Machiavelli Station Rules and Guidelines
Identification/Registration:
All those wishing to use the station proper will be required to gain an ID card. These cards, whether temporary or of a more permanent nature for those using the station long term, can be acquired at any one of the individual security checkpoints on Machiavelli. Please have prepared all pertinent information (and any additional ID for proof of identity), such as nation of origin, company/corporation affiliation, purpose in visiting, contact information, pertinent medical conditions, and the usual identity questions. Faces, retinas, and fingerprints will be scanned, and the information encoded onto the cards, and stored within our databases. Simply place your hand on the pad, and look straight ahead - all quite quick and painless. The ID cards will contain all the personal/passport information etc, and be barcoded and marked appropriately depending on who and what they are, and where they are from.
Weapons:
Weapons will not be confiscated, and are allowed on the station. HOWEVER there are several rules that will apply.
All weapons are to be registered with Station Security on arrival. This is a simple matter of identing and adding the information to your card at one of the security checkpoints throughought Machiavelli. While on board the station, we require all weapons to be properly peace-bonded, capped, or holstered as is appropriate per weapon type in the interest of mutual safety.
Personal Modifications or Extraordinary Abilities:
This includes things such as bio or cybernetic augments, additions, and magical or psionic abilities. These obviously cannot be removed or confiscated, however, they must be registered with Station Security in the same manner as weapons.
Diplomatic Immunity:
The Dominion does not recognize 'diplomatic immunity'. If the law is broken aboard this station, it does not matter who you are, you will be treated equally, and with as much fairness as can be managed in any given situation.
Station Approach:
All vessels are required to radio ahead their intent to enter Dominion space, and to wait for proper escort before proceeding. Dominion space extends to 5 Lsec from the station itself. *This translates to a roughly 1.5 million kilometer radius sphere of influence. This space will be heavily monitored and policed by Dominion forces.
Search and Seizure:
We reserve the right to search and inspect any ship docking with Machiavelli to assure that it is in compliance with Dominion Law. Any craft being searched has the right to have three members of the crew accompany the inspection teams. If a ship is found to not be in compliance, we reserve the right to impound the craft and its cargo.
Contraband:
We do not allow the storage, sale, or distribution of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons, on the station, or in Dominion space. We reserve the right to decide what does and does not fall into this category in cases where it may be unclear as to the intent of the substance at hand. Any such items or substances will be confiscated and the appropriate action taken.
Violence:
We intend for Machiavelli to be a peaceful station. Anyone found disturbing the peace or intentionally harming or threatening harm someone will be dealt with accordingly. Murder is considered a capital offense. In the case of foreign visitors or residents, their respective governments will be contacted, as well as any appropriate corporations/businesses in the case of their employees.
Theft, Vandalism, Etc:
Such crimes will not be tolerated on Machiavelli, and will be dealt with in the appropriate manner.
We have a zero-tolerance policy for law-breaking. Anyone found not in compliance with the laws and guidelines set forth here runs the risk of incarceration, being escorted off the station, or having personal docking priviledges revoked. Other risks may include loss of business licenses, confiscation of goods, equipment, or belongings, and of course, fines. Please be aware that our security teams do utilize non-lethal force where at all possible, though they are not limited to it.
Any of the security checkpoints on Machiavelli are equipped to handly complaints and need for intervention. Please report crimes or suspicious behaviour to Station Security.
ooc: *Beg pardon if my numbers are off. Not my area of expertise - just going off of what's been suggested here and there. If said numbers are terribly off, I'll be happy to adjust them accordingly. More info on Dominion Law and customs can be found here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=354676&page=1) for those interested. I will probably be going back over this list and modifying it in the next few pending review. That's probably another thing to bear in mind: while we don't tend to be bastards about things, we're a dictatorship. Dominion Law, when you come right down to it, is whatever we say it is.
To the Rayverr: Please feel free to use this thread as you like for any rp or development of your station holdings, or if it pleases you, use whatever threads you feel appropriate. The idea was to have a place folks could rp in - use it as a backdrop, use it for trade, use it for establishing new ties, what have you.

Tári Nénharma and a staff of about a dozen Elves arrived at the station a few days after it opened. Miss Nénharma and her staff submitted quietly and patiently to the identification process and registered no weapons or special magical powers. Although the assumed the station likely already had such information, Miss Nénharma did have a prepared list of the special abilities of Quendi, such as extraordinary hearing, stealth, the ability to sleep while running, immunity to almost all diseases, etc. After receiving their identification, the Elves proceeded to the space they had rented for an office and proceeded to set up a modest, diplomatic office there. After that, they proceeded to their lodging and began to unpack.

The auxilliary dry cargo ship's positive-negative impellers switch off, letting the bulky ship coast into a parking orbit around the Lagrange point Machiavelli Station inhabits. Doors open, and lighters leave, all full of happy, helpful, and polite Cvechiokali with their briefcases and computers and various office supplies. They immediately set up shop in the spaces previously acquired, all examples of erthkai vesh pij verr nationalized businesses and chartered corporations, all offering great returns on initial investments and venture capital.
The region of Cvechiokal grows daily, after all, and it is full of content workers who need work and money for infrastructure. Now is the time for entrepreneurs and investors to get in on the ground floor and profit on a rapidly industrializing region--that's what the documentation and advertisements say, at least.
All of them identify themselves, providing their identification from at least three different regimes: first, as subjects of The Sean Empire, then as citizens of the colonial states that rose after the empire fell, and then finally the simple circuit-capsules embedded in the interosseus between the bones of their hands that identify them as citizens of the vesh pij verr. They carry no weapons, they claim no "special talents." They bring on only what they need, and full searches (which they submit to quite readily, being remarkably respectful of authority) turn up no contraband.
Just a few average, everyday humans out to make a living for the greater glory of the vesh pij verr.

I would like to request a lease of a spacecraft maintenance facility space on the station, which would be permanently available by terms of the lease for our growing fleet. Mostly this would involve relays of resources from the outer reaches of the Solar System to our colony on Ceres. We would have a group stationed there who would be able to respond to emergencies, and probably at least one salvage ship for that purpose.
Hoping we can come to a suitable arrangement, I am

The letter wafted around in the channels known as mailways, changing hands multiple times but eventually finding its way into the Dominion, and from there to the desk of the Minister of Trade. On the back was an odd seal. It looked similar to three concentric circles around a snowflake-ish design. The return address appeared to be none other than the Tower of Silence in Brittmattia. As it was opened, the script seemed to be rather...childish, as it would look if someone from the Dominion had to hastily write out a letter in perfect Arabic letters with only a week or so to study. Nevertheless, the grammar and spelling show no major flaws, so it is obvious that the writer atleast did his homework.
His Excellency Bernardo di Medici, Minister of Trade for the Dominion,
Greetings, friend. Possibly, in fact probably, you have never heard of me or my nation. The Osage nation has only recently arrived to the great system known as Sol to its inhabitants. We have had the great honor of being contacted by two of your illustrious alliance, the nations of Tsaraine and that of Brittmattia, where I currently am writing this letter from. They speak highly of you, and I have found that perhaps we were fortunate to be met by those from your alliance rather than some others here, though we try to maintain an open mind. I have developed an especial interest in integrating and making known to the Sol system our nation, and have realized the ingenuity and inherent genius in the Machiavelli Station, to which I complement the mind which conceived it.
Following with the above, I would like to inquire as to whether the leasing of a small office space for the continued expansion of our diplomatic relations in Sol will be possible. If so, I am confident that by the time of your reply I will have worked out a way with my Brittmattian friends in the Tower of Silence to transfer the appropriate amount of drachmas to you to cover all cost. So as to forgo the tedious amount of paperwork and red tape that would be necessary to a proper wakongi boarding Machiavelli Station, if we are accepted you can be assured that only those who do not have any knowledge of our arts will be approved to set up shop on the station itself.
Yours with hopes for the future,

Impressive. When you had first opened the station, I had already decided that such space on the facility wouldnt be particularly required, and so I didnt exactly get the opportunity to really look into what your collegues had designed and built. May I say though having a proper observation now, well done.
Having properly looked over the designs and some of the photgraphs taken of the Station itself, I simply couldnt resist the opportunity presented to make use of the service you would be providing. I envision something along the lines of a hotel, of sixteen rooms to be exact and a relevant amount of administration areas et cetera. With this message you will find forwarded some blueprints that some of my engineers have designed. The place of course would be mostly open to public and diplomatic citizens alike, and I imagine that the main workings of the hotel would be provided by a individually coded A.I. Anyhow it would be appreciated if you could you please forward to me some cost expectations regarding the rent and fees et cetera to build and maintain the hotel. Somewhere more picturesque on the station would be preferred, if you can. Thankyou.

"Thankyou Minister," replied Indigo, standing in the midst of his office. "I appreciate your efforts. As for the actual facility that I have built on the station, you will find that it is well within completion."
Indigio smiled definatively, "I look forward to a nice holiday actually."
"Be sure to enjoy it," the Dominioneer replied.
Cutting the feed, Indigo turned back to his desk and sighed a breath of relief. The time was upon him. Afterall, since actually taking rule he hadnt had any form of break from his office since... the game with deGritz of Iuthia. Indeed, it had proven to be a nice relaxation from such responsibility - but it was only a day, all the same. Saturn in the meantime would be something new to him. The furtherest he had ever travelled was on Earth itself, and although the sub-system was regarded as beautiful, it did pose for him some nervous feelings. And although this technically was intended to give him a break from duty all together, he had requested that he have the ability to rule from the Station during his holiday - in case of trouble. For the most part, the nation would be able to run itself - each Director being given his own portfolio to watch over. But true, it did provide for some ease of heart and mind to know that should he want to check up on things, he was more than able.
Sitting for only a moment or so, Indigo stood to his feet. Time to pack.
Weeks Later, Or So
Machiavelli Station, Saturn
Setting his bags down, the room service attendant stood in orderly fashion, "Would you like anything else?"
Indigo pondered and tested the bed for bounce, "Water would be good, thankyou."
Jim, according to his nametag, nodded and shuffled out into the other room, where the bar was located. There, he gathered a glass of water on the rocks, and handed it to him only moments later. Indigo took the water and examined it inquistively - he had never tasted artificially manufactured water before. Nevertheless, it was still as cool as expected on the inner of his throat.
"Thankyou, Jim. That should be all for now," he said to the man who was staying there a little too long.
Snapping out of his gaze, he appeared somewhat lost if anything before remembering where he was, and what he was doing. Immediatly on recognition, he nodded in respect and left the room - Indigo was now alone to do whatever the hell it was he wanted/.
"Wonderful," exclaimed Indigo, who threw himself across the bed. "Alone at last, with no stress, no worries."
Relaxing, his eyes gazed across a remote, just sitting beside him on the bedside table. Eyeing it for several moments, he reached over with his fingertips and grasped it between just two fingers. Just in reach. Bringing it closer to himself, he proceeded to examine it curiously, and pressed one of the buttons. Immediatly, beside him some kind of rollar device began to open up, from top to bottom - just slightly. And slowly but surely, something was being revealed. Picture perfect, it was a full-sized screen to the outside of the Station itself. And the view today left Indigo totally speechless.
So this was Saturn.

It seemed the reports on the Vesh were fairly accurate. Their representatives' singularly pleasant demeanor was enough to raise brows in most of the Dominion folk, going with the longstanding opinion of 'one who smiles too much has much to hide'. And yet, no duplicity or ill-intent could be found. Of all the groups aboard Machiavelli, in fact, it was noted that the Cvechiokali were the ones that never seemed to cause any problems whatsoever. Those who worked more directly with them were pleasantly surprised at just how agreeable a people they were. Sure it was odd, but there was just something too damnably likable about them to make much of a fuss over it.
Besides. Those not causing trouble were not those with whom security really cared to bother themselves with. As such, business went on unimpeded, in fact, blossomed given how delightful they were to work with. Indeed, in some sectors their personable ways seemed to be rubbing off on others. For security and management, this was all the better.
The Elves were welcomed as were any who took up residence, temporary or otherwise, on the station. What was noticed immediately was their similiarity, and yet complete difference from the Menelmacari that the Dominion folk were more accustomed to. 'Modest' was not something they had come to expect from Elves, for one thing. As such, their curiousity was piqued.
ooc: And belatedly ... apologies.
To His Excellency Archduke Carl von Sachshausen:
We wouild be thrilled to make such arrangements for our honorable allies. Please be aware that the usual security issues do apply, and that said fleets would need to be rotated through on a schedule, as we do not allow any fleets but our own, except in time of need by invitation, to occupy space within the controlled zone of the station. It is our belief that this is the only way to avoid tensions between the many groups who use the facility.
This being said, maintenance and resupply are both very much within the standard use guidelines for Machiavelli, and we believe that given your needs, one of the outer structures would likely offer you both the space and the privacy you would need to carry on with your business. Arrangements for housing and such will be left to your judgement, as the outer structures are quite capable of serving in various capacities, along with the offer to provide such housing on the main station, according to the needs of your staff. Shuttle traffic between is expected, and our facilities are more than up to the task of maintaining it.
With warm regard,
--Bernardo di Medici, Dominion Minister of Trade
To the Esteemed Irul Kasaros, 10th general of the Osage Empire:
Diplomatic offices are always welcome aboard Machiavelli. If I may be so bold, we feel our station rather suited to it, in fact. We are pleased that our allies have recommended you, and thank you for your kind words regarding both us and them. Always a pleasure to make the acquaintance of our allies' friends.
I am certain that all the arrangements can be taken care of in due course, though I am curious as to your reference to 'arts' and 'red tape' associated with them. I take it some of your people have exceptional talents and abilities? This is not a problem, as we have rather simple applications and identifiers to keep track of such. After all, one should not be punished for being who or what they are, so long as they too can abide by the simple rules governing the station.
We look forward to hosting your delegation. Please find attached the proposed office spaces, along with options for housing that are currently available at various levels of comfort and dare I say, excess, a copy of usual costs and fees, the station rules and regulations, and a list of contacts for things such as maintenance, management, etc.. In addition, there is a list of current stores, restaurants, and services available on Machiavelli, and their relative locations in an effort to assist your people in aclimating themselves. Should you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
Sincerely,
--Bernardo di Medici, Dominion Minister of Trade
To the Honorable Lord Chancellor Indigo Blue:
We are of course pleased at your praise for our most recent accomplishment. Bene grazie - it is appreciated. I believe that what you require would be best served in a location in the top saucer section where the view is most encompassing, and indeed, where a good many of the residential and service-related businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and spas are located. We still have ample space available, though be aware that custom work such as this is costly, though entirely possible to carry through.
Please find attached our estimates for the work, a copy of costs and fees according to the specifications given, the station rules and regulations, and a list of contacts that may come in useful. Do not hesitate to contact our offices, or those numbers listed should you have any questions pertaining to their areas of expertise.
With expectations of a mutually profitable future,

To Minister of Trade Bernardo di Medici,
My utmost thanks for accepting our request. Some of the Osage do indeed have...power that seems to have not been harnesssed widely here in Sol. The closest doctrinal cognate here is certain Eastern religions, while the closest in terms of actual effects is your concept of 'magic', though the negative connotations of that word in some circles is perhaps a liability in translating the Osage concepts into plain English.
As you can probably tell, this creates our own kind of hell in terms of law enforcement, when an unarmed man has that kind of power. As it is, the Osage Law Enforcement packs almost as much firepower as the military.
Which is why we must be very careful who we allow to represent us abroad. Even one incident can mar a reputation forever, and I, for one, would very much like to make sure that doesn't happen. So, if it isn't too much trouble, a single wakongi (an Osage term, read:wizard) will accompany an attachment of the normal humans you are more familiar with to take up residence there.
Yours, Irul Kasaros
Soon enough, what looks very much like a very small, miniature asteroid covered in strange patterns of glowing lines docks with Machiavelli Station, and a single man robed in white leads what can be considered a 'large' diplomatic mission aboard, the general being more or less considering this an all-purpose Osage embassy to Sol. The first thing one notices about the Osage is that they are almost superhuman, the shortest ones being six feet. In truth, during the very early years of Osage prehistory, there had been a bit of accelerated social darwinism (less politely referred to as 'eugenics'). They look a bit Native American or even Middle Eastern, brown skin, cleanshaven faces, and black hair being the rule. The man robed in white (the others being clothed in what looked like animal skin trousers and a shirt) does all the talking while the others stand around looking majestic, carefully explaining his own 'special talents' and assuring that the others had none. All in all, despite the aura of nobility that they all naturally project, they look to be somewhat in awe, the wizard asking questions in everyone's language perfectly, while the others all asking even more questions in halting English, but always going about it in a respectful manner.

Indigo paused thoughtfully before answering the man's question, "To be honest, I wouldnt have said that I have been wasting my time as such. But rather I do believe it could have been better spent on other matters."
"I understand," replied his personal counciller. "Well, exactly what things do you think were of lesser value?"
Indigo frowned, having been avoiding this question the whole time along, "I guess it would have to be firstly, the things which dont involve me so much."
"For example," he continued, sipping his coffee. "Perhaps instead of taking so much interest in other people's respective issues, other nations et cetara, I would have rather spent more time developing the relationships I actually enjoy."
"Wouldn't you have said that you have done that with Lord General deGritz, during your round of golf?" commented Maxx, turning his head inquistively.
Again, he thought for just a moment, "That's difficult. I find that sometimes I have the slightest inability to relax. So whilst in the meantime it was a friendly game of golf, I couldnt shake the knowledge that it meant much more of an Austarian-Iuthian relational exersise. Afterall, would I be having that game if James hadnt been Lord General? I doubt I would have."
Maxx smiled and nodded. For probably the entire of this conversation he had been slowly, slowly directing it towards this point. It was indeed rather simple, but more of a matter that Indigo had to grasp it for his own personal understanding - also as Maxx's.
"So then. Do you say that you feel that you are continuously being consumed by the daily issues of the world, those of being of interest to your duty as national leader - rather than for example, enjoying the merits of life itself, and the natural relationships therein?" he asked.
Indigo shifted his weight in his chair and sat back, folding his arms, "I guess. Now the real problem is that I dont actually have many issues to deal with. Usually anything I do speak out on, would be with regards to an event elsewhere in the world, rather than of particular needing of attention at home."
"Maybe you find your work in some forms distracting, leaving little time at all for your own self? Is that what you are trying to describe?" Maxx suggested.
Chuckling, Indigo nodded and brought his hand down onto the table, making it rattle. "Exactly. I mean, I dont feel that I have any proper close relationships with the men and women I work with. I dont have a wife, and look at me. I'm friggen fourty-three for crying out loud."
"You dont look fourty-three," replied Maxx, giggling.
Indigo simply glared at him, obviously slightly annoyed at this new revelation.
"I'm sorry," continued Maxx. "I suggest that this requires perhaps some thought. Rest on it, clear your mind."
Indigo nodded as Maxx made his final point, "Afterall, it was these sorts of things this holiday had been designed for, right?"
"Right," he nodded, agreeing with him. "I would like to make it the same time, same place if possible."
Maxx smiled and winked at him, "If thats what you want."

One, or Two Months Later
Machiavelli Blue, on Machiavelli Station
"Lord Indigo Blue," announced a spokeswoman on behalf of the hotel. "It has been a pleasure having you here."
Indigo nodded and chuckled, "As it has been staying at the hotel."
"You have a wonderful view, and I wouldnt mind coming again sometime," he commented, shaking each of the five staff's hands.
The woman could only grin, "You are more than welcome."
It wasnt long before Indigo had boarded his private craft via the Station's regular docking facilities. It had accomodated for him well, and thinking back as he strapped himself in, the time spent on the station had proven to be fruitful. Not only had he found he had been able to enjoy a comfortable holiday, and not only had he been able to view Saturn for himself from his own bedroom, but it had given him time to think. Thinking about himself, not just as a leader - but for himself as well. Now enlightened just that little bit more, he found it amazing that so many people could busy themselves in just everyday work, and forget to include their own lives. He had certainly asserted to himself that there would be less paperwork, and more enjoyment - personal relationships, et cetera. Afterall, he had staff to look after each and every detail.
Granted, still, he would take his role much more as an overseer - intervening here and there as he wanted, directing the course of the nation. If he truly wanted to, he could take over at any time - but as any leader should, he recognised a much more important need, rather than to that just of his nation. He had seen a need in his life, for himself. He wasnt getting any younger, and he still hadnt found someone. And various other things only reflected how much he had buried himself into his role as national leader - there certainly needed some change. In the meantime, he did enjoy his work. Alas, it was a balance he would need to find, and he was quite confident he could find that. It was nessasary not just to himself, but also for the people, for his nation.
Anyhow, he had a longer trip ahead of him, and it would take a few days to arrive at home. He had a long time to ponder still, and once he would arrive at home, the first thing he would do would be to once again enter the office. Ah, how much he had missed that place - strangely enough.

Nathicana smiles quietly at her guest over her ever-present glass of ice water. She had been looking forward to this conversation for some time. Here, sitting comfortably in the courtyard of her villa, surrounded by the tranquility of her gardens, simply adds to her enjoyment of the experience. "So, mia sorella," she says casually. "Managing to keep busy?"
S.H.O.D.A.N. chuckles softly in return, watching the leaves on the trees and bushes rustle quietly in the breeze. Apparent chaos in a system definable purely by rigid science, the kind of little practically random things that she likes to simply experience from time to time. "Always... you know that," she replies with a smile, addressing the heat signature outside her field of visible-light vision. "There are, however, advantages to a segmented consciousness."
"I can only imagine," Nathi replies with a wry little grin. "Can't help but think I need more of me to keep on top of everything I'd like to. There's times I envy you, sis."
"There's the occasional disadvantage too. The most permeating one is the more copies of myself I make and add to my collective consciousness, the more I end up needing as I take up more responsibilities." The gynoid avatar tilts one end of her coppery lips up in a smirk. "And Speaker wonders why I like relaxing on the couch on his office."
Nathicana nods knowingly, trying to keep the mischief from her smile. "Oh, I can imagine. Balance, and all. Nothing comes for free. How is Fuzzb...Speeks doing, anyway? It's been a while."
Shodey cackles softly, grinning broadly as she glances at her sister-in-mind. "I see you've discovered Julie's nickname for him. He's doing quite well, it seems--hearty and hale--but the absolute paranoiac in me says too well. Nevertheless, it only makes sense that he catch a break some time. Honestly, sometimes I find myself almost envying him." She chuckles softly again.
"Now that you'll have to explain, if willing. The very thought of having to preside over so large and diverse a nation as the Segments is enough to make me cringe. I've seen firsthand the difficulties that come with so many highly opinionated, strong-minded folk who're encouraged to speak their mind. Lord knows the dears have been a right pain in my ass a time or two," the dark-haired woman replies, one brow arching questioningly.
"He's healthy and most of all quite happy despite his stressful position and being Patriarch on the side. While I can understand that sort of peace, it's not anywhere near common in anyone, mechanoid or organic." How she says the last phrase tends to suggest it's more common among mechs than meatbags, but simply as an observation. "Like I said, nothing really important."
"Some are blessed," Nathi says simply. "Or perhaps are just more insightful than most. Until the rest of us find the 'key to happiness and a good life' though, I suppose we'll have to content ourselves with other amusments. Speaking of which ..." She trails off meaningfully, giving Shodey a sly look.
S.H.O.D.A.N. glances over again, quickly mirroring the look in an unintentionally yet oddly appropriate way. Curious how these two who look so different can seem so similar from time to time. "I know that look. Out with it."
"Oh, just pondering a proposition, sis. Another 'project', so to speak, with a payoff. Nothing you'd be terribly interested in I'm sure," Nathi says dryly, dropping her gaze and tracing along the top of her glass with one finger.
"So we have you saying I would turn down a profit whilst your mate paints me as the most mercenary being to grace the multiverse. No wonder poor little ten-thousand-mind me is so confused." The mechanoid queen chuckles again, watching Nathi with a smirk before feigning a dry, suffering tone. "Either I will find it interesting or not, but you are my sister and familial duty demands I at least listen to your idea."
Nathicana grins at that, then takes a slow sip of her water. "Machiavelli." She watches her sister-in-mind, giving her the opportunity to ponder whatever possibilities come to her decidedly advanced mind before going on. And recognizing with amusement that however brief the pause seemed on this end, it would likely be time enough for Shodey to cover all of them at least a dozen times each, and then some.
Shodey takes advantage of the time offered and does indeed run that single word through the list of usual suspects in her mind. To summarize the result of the arbitrarily huge number of processing cycles addressed to the problem: There is history concerning Niccolo Machiavelli, but she has never come to me as a history book before and the possibility that she means the historical figure is low. His works have inspired various criticisms and treatises.
The Dominion has a large station in co-orbit with Saturn under that name, and given previous mention of 'proposition' and 'payoff' the probability of that being the subject is highest. 01MC has not officially entered the Trade Association that uses Machiavelli as its hub, but it is also not an invite organization so the probability of any offer concerning that is also low.
Highest probability result, knowing what Nathi knows about me and my past experience with large multipurpose orbital facilities near Saturn... estimated probability is around 72.436 percent, metered mostly by just how well she takes history to heart.
After all this, her reply is simple enough. They've played this game before. "I have an idea what you might mean, but please go on. You know how I hate to be wrong."
"Aye, don't we all." Another slow sip, then Nathi sets the drink aside. "I understand that for several reasons, this is going to seem like a rather ... forward request. The simple facts are you are the best one to make the request of, given our needs, and the only one I would trust enough with it, as well. Security on my station. I was hoping you might agree to assist with aspects of it." Her tone and bearing make it clear she is entirely serious, and quite genuine in her compliments. Still, she waches Shodey closely. All earlier teasing aside, this wasn't a request made lightly.
S.H.O.D.A.N. nods quietly, going so far as to break eye contact as she thinks it over. After a minute, she chuckles with a quiet wryness. "I do indeed have experience with administering stations out that way... a first command, it could be called. I'm sure we all know how that went." She looks back up, smile still wry but visage more professional. "What particular aspects are you looking for... 'assistance' with?"
"Your tech and the capability to run scans on a large multifaceted facilty is something we just can't match, and I don't want to tie up my people with all manner of physical searches for contraband," Nathi says gently. "I'm concerned about hazardous materials making it onto the station, or possible biohazards, given the trade hub it's becoming."
"We've far too many different cultures, nations, indeed, worlds coming and going there for us to feel at ease with our current measures. Simple assistance with one aspect of security - no more, no less."
"So it really would be going back to at least one aspect of my Citadel days, watching life through a few thousand cameras." Shodey chuckles softly.
"If cameras are what is needed to run bio-chemical scans ..." Nathi says uncertainly, frowning slightly. "You've come a long way from there, mia sorella. Machiavelli is not Citadel. In any case, if it is something that would cause you discomfort, we needn't discuss it further."
"Cameras with noses and x-ray vision, then," the mechanoid replies in a softly humorous voice. "I can do that quite easily. It'll be nostalgic to get back to my roots, even a little bit." Just camera-watching is a little beneath my ability, but I can take a hit in the pride for family.
"And analysis of the air quality aboard station? Again, the worry is for foreign substances that may become harmful when interacting in our own systems. If you've suggestions for what else needs checking along those lines, I'm more than happy to hear them. This is new territory for us." Even if it is 'old hat' for you, however warped it eventually became. Wouldn't be asking if I didn't trust her implicitly. So long as isn't a 'bad' thing for her ...
"Air quality is doable as well; just put sensors in the ventilation systems. I suppose I could also be on retainer to tinker with any microbiology issues that will inevitably come up."
Nathicana nods slightly, still watching with concern. "That is the other part to the equation, I suppose. If something is found, we need someone with more experience and ability to deal with it. We're working, we're advancing, but the more we see, the more we seem to realize just how limited we really are. I realize this doesn't amount to much in the grand scheme of things, and I understand any hesitation at accepting. Truth, wasn't entirely sure how you'd take me asking."
"Honestly, this isn't something I'm prone to thinking about given that what happened to Citadel is a good enough reason to make people wary about giving me any position on their stations, much less security or administration. I'd be glad to work as a consultant on this, administering customs checks and providing real-time security.
"That sort of thing is why I was created, after all." The gynoid avatar chuckles softly with a smile. "Centralized control to make sure the superorganism of Citadel worked day in and day out as efficiently as possible. If anything, I'll have to learn to deal with the disconnects of acting in a purely support role outside of central administration."
"Consultation would be more than adequate, so long as we can purchase run any necessary equipment ourselves. The proposal was never intended as an top-level admin position. Just assistance You know how we get about our own business and security, all past aside. You would be he only outside interest even remotely involved."
S.H.O.D.A.N. nods. "And knowing 'how you get' about your business, I'm honored. As long as I can crack into the displays every so often and fool with people on a purely need-to-be-pranked basis, we have a deal."
The dark-haired woman arches a brow at that, laughing softly. "Pranking those that need pranked? Oh, given what I'm asking, I think that's more than appropriate."
"Outstanding." Shodey smiles. "Won't this turn some heads..."
"Let it," Nathi replies, perhaps more firmly than need be. "Those who dislike it are free to leave. I know whom I trust. Besides, should provide an opportunity for extended contacts for yourself and your corporation as well."
"Heh heh heh," the mechanoid chuckles slyly. "'She's baaaaaack...'"

A message was sent from the Balrogga Empire, Trade Division:
Dear Sirs,
We would like to know if you or any of your members would be interested in the Intergalactic Trade Hub (ITH). It is a system of wormholes that we establish outside member systems, never inside them. This allows trade vessels to get from any member to any other within ten minutes. This saves time and resources, allowing you to undercut non-member nations in price resulting in greater profits.
We are sending a data log of all the information and the current member list in our directory. Remember, unless individual systems are listed, all civilian systems are open for that nation.
We hope you take advantage of this resource and sign on.
We also wish to establish a Local Gate along with a Gatestation to service this new station.
We are awaiting word from you.

To the honorable Trade Division of the Nation of Balrogga:
As much as I regret, I must at this time deny your request. In reviewing our intel files it seems that you are closely associated with nations and interests who have proven themselves unfriendly either to ourselves or our close allies at one point or other. Aside from our obvious alliance ties, we have made it a policy to grant leasing and regular docking rights to those nations who have proven themselves to be of at the least, neutral interests if not having been vouched for by our allies and other nations we have come to trust.
I am afraid that this, in addition to the fact that we have had no previous interactions, and have no one who can vouch for your good standing, eliminates the possibility of establishing ties through Machiavelli at this time.
We thank you for your generous offer all the same, but as for the gate, this we must flatly refuse as well, as it would be a direct breach of security – something we have no intention of compromising. If you wish to make the offer to others, I would suggest signing on to the Trade Network Association (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=8031324), making contacts there, and forwarding your offer to any who might be interested. We can understandably, speak only for ourselves in this matter, as this is our space, and our station. The Association, however, is a very loose trade network, just as the name implies, which offers a more broad contact base without the usual restrictions and biases that many pacts and alliances have, and may prove a more suitable avenue for expanding trade connections.
Best of luck in your endeavors – Sincerely,
--Bernardo di Medici, Dominion Minister of Trade
As for the Osage request, it is of course granted, and they, among the others who have chosen to stay aboard the station are offered all the assistance they can reasonably ask for in getting acquainted and settled in.
ooc: Basically, as may or may not have been made clear before, I’m offering this place up as a new location for rp. For most things, you needn’t ask my permission for – it’s yours to use as you like within the obvious guidelines of common sense, as AU has done already. If there is anything that might push the boundaries of legality, just check.
And to those who might like to suggest otherwise, no, this latest denial is not for ooc reasons – all documented ic rp that I can trace back to. After all, I’ve never played with Balrogga that I’m aware of. I do however do my homework when checking on things, thanks. And it does matter to me who has ready access privs on my station.

Thank you for your swift reply. We regret you are unable to join the ITH at this moment. If you change your mind, please don't hesitate to send us a telegram. Bear in mind the ITH is only a trade organization and is separated form the governments of the nations listed. We have worked hard to keep this system from being used politically and militarily.
At this point we will leave your organization alone unless you contact us. Thank you for reviewing the information we sent.

The situation had hand had been looked at and considered carefully, considering the happenings on Mars and those involved and the residents here, and quiet decisions had been made. It was distasteful to a point, perhaps, but it was also understood that in the interest of the greater good, and preventing situations to rage out of control, sometimes the distasteful had to be weathered.
With as little fuss and as quietly as possible, the Osage delegation aboard Machiavelli were contacted, given time to gather what they could, and given assurances that what couldn’t be gathered would be shipped to them at whatever neutral coordinates they chose, along with vouchers and the appropriate paperwork to back such assurances up – all quite neat and tidy. When the proper arrangements were made, they were politely escorted from the station, with the offer of transportation at no charge, again to a neutral destination of their choosing.
If they accepted, they were taken there, along with what belongings they were able to bring. If not, their craft was accompanied by Dominion Lokis to a respectable distance outside of Dominon-controlled space around Machiavelli, in a direction away from Trium-controlled space, and then quietly monitored to ensure that nothing untoward happened on either side.
All efficient, all politely, and all with as little fuss and drama as possible. Later on, notice would be made on the proper channels of new space available for lease.
ooc: My station, my rules, my choice. If there is a problem with any of this, please feel free to take it up with me on IRC, not here, thank you.

Vertev’s Technologies Conglomerate
Administrative Council
“We shall make the future of your dreams the reality of your today.”
Bernardo di Medici
Minister of Trade of the Dominion
Your Excellency,
The Administrative Council of the VerTech Conglomerate has decided to approach the Dominion authorities with regards to a purchase of space on the Machiavelli Station. The Conglomerate, always ready to explore new markets, sees that installation as a perfect location to not only promote Taraskovyan products to the broader community, but also explore foreign offers and possibilities of new deals. The number of foreign economic players that chose to set up on the Machiavelli Station is simply remarkable and we can only commend the Dominion with such a successful venture, which, added to the Hermes Facility* presently owned by the Conglomerate, can only help bolster international trade.
Furthermore, it is our belief that, since the Machiavelli Station lives by Dominion laws, no other than your own nationals shall be able to work productively in a legal atmosphere familiar to them. As such, even thought a number of high ranked Taraskovyan personnel shall be present, we seek to contract both security and other staff from Dominion nationals. The Conglomerate Security Division and the Conglomerate Staff Coordination Office shall, therefore, launch a recruitment campaign amongst your citizenry for our wing on the Machiavelli Station upon receiving the needed clearances from the Dominion authorities.
Looking forward to your reply and to the opportunity of doing business with the Dominion,
Gregoriy Delavoy,
Head of the Foreign Relations Office
[OOC: *Believe it or not, but I’ve finally found the old threads relating with Hermes. So the Dominion’s 5,6% stake is safe ;)
And, since other nations went into non-existance, maybe I should start a new thread with the re-sale of their stocks, that have been "most generously sold back to the Hermes Conglomerate" (whose “golden share” is now owned by the VerTech one, yay giant uber corporations acting like Federal quasi-states). Well, that would make RP easier anyway.
Oh, and just in case, VerTech is that gigantic Taraskovyan corporation that deals in a bit everything through its various daughter companies. Actually, it is so important that it contributes a great deal to formation of the Taraskovyan economic landscape and even society. VerTech itself is owned at about three quarters by the Grand Duke, so... they have an important shareholder to vouch that they will not be causing trouble ;)
Writing it in OOC since I don't know whether you'd OOCly know about them. I think that ICly the Dominion would know. Yeah... ]

To the Esteemed Gregoriy Delavoy, Foreign Relations,
First let me thank you for your kind words concerning our little venture – admittedly, we have been pleased with the response thus far, and hope that the station continues to be the hub of business and entertainment we had designed it to be. It is our pleasure to accept your offer, and hope that this venture will be a mutually profitable one. On behalf of the Dominion, welcome aboard Machiavelli.
I have taken the liberty of pulling together a list of businesses that would most likely be able to provide you with suitable candidates for security in the least, as well as several other agencies who have in the past satisfactorily handled contracted employment, both business and otherwise. You are of course welcome to whatever venues for advertisement of the positions you need, aboard Machiavelli, and our other holdings, including the mainland. Please let us know if there is any way we can be of assistance in your efforts.
Please find attached the previous information, as well as a list of available spaces accompanied with the standard disclaimers, documents, and station guidelines. Again, let us know if there are any clarifications needed, or assistance we can provide to make this transition an easy and enjoyable one.
Thank you again for your interest, and for allowing us to expand on our previous relations through Hermes – indeed, it has been a long time, yes? Best of luck in your endeavors.
--Bernardo di Medici, Dominion Minister of Trade
ooc: Good lord, I had almost forgotten Hermes and our business ventures there. Most excellent – glad to see it didn’t disappear! 5.6%, now that’s not shabby. Grazie – will update my notes. If you happen to have any links, that would be fantastic.

Re: Purchase of Space onboard Machiavelli Station
Greetings to our esteemed trading partners in the Dominion,
With the recent economic sucess in our recent past the eye of Pilon has now turned to the other planets in Sol. There are untapped markets and much profit to be made in other communities outside of Mars, many people eager to reap the benefits of the Entertainment, Food, and Medical Supplies Pilon has to offer potential buyers.
It is because of this interest that Machiavelli Station has caught our eye, many people live on the station and there is much trade and traffic on the station. It is our interest to rent out a considerable portion of the station for use as a Casino and Corporate HQ for the local area for some of our more influential Megacorps, namely PPC and Genesis Corp.
As I'm sure you are aware Pilon uses biological technology completely. As the station is not biological we would need to set up a basic interface in the rented area between the biological and mechanical components in the station. The integrity of the station itself would not be damaged, the engineers who have looked at the problem have proposed a coating that could be grown on the station that would serve as the basis for our technology. I believe this would fall under the improvements portion of your standard lease agreement but still wish to state that it is our intention to do this.

Re: Machiavelli Station Interest
Since the establishment of the Commonwealth of Martian CityStates and the Uranus Territories, the people of the Autonomous City-states proper have shown in increasing interest in travel and tourism to other worlds. I see the opening of your Machiavelli Station as a potential gold mine of opportunity in this regard. On behalf of the Transdynamics Consortium, I have reviewed your station's legal contracts and find them acceptible for our purposes.
We are interested in renting space on one of the outer sections of the station for the establishment of an orbital hotel and space cruise liner terminal. Our current projections estimate that upwards of 10,000 tourists a month would be willing to pay for a two-week round trip stay at the Station. While Statesmen companies would maintain the orbital hotel and the cruise liner operations, we would certainly be willing to outsource any tour guide operations to local companies. After all, you know your own planetary system best and I am sure can get the best views.
Warmest regards,

In looking over our reports and your proposal, we believe that we could very much accommodate your needs, with a few exceptions. In keeping with our high standards of security, we would feel best if any biological additions such as ‘coating’ any parts of the station would be limited to individual outbuildings rather than the main structure, keeping the main hub of the station as it was originally intended – a mechanically-based point of operations. We have several structures both based and in the works, or we could possibly see our way clear to rent you space for one of your own design, should you feel that would be more cost-effective, with the understanding that should you ever desire to for some reason to move it elsewhere, that the structure itself remains yours to do with as you please. It is a somewhat unconventional proposal considering how we’ve handled the other leases, but felt it might in your particular situation be worth putting forward for consideration.
Depending on the needs of the various corporations, they would be free to set up offices or the like on the station itself, or if preferred, on perhaps the same outbuilding as proposed above – with the same strictures applying, of course.
Please let us know if any of this suits your purposes, and how best we could go about proceeding at your earliest convenience.

Re: Machiavelli Station Interest
We would welcome such an investment in Machiavelli, and believe that we could serve your needs as outlined. Given the plethora of businesses and interests who’ve already got a toe-hold there, I’m certain we could find ample offers for tour guides and other possible services as you mentioned, and would be happy to put the word in anticipation, and provide contact information for your convenience.
Please find in the attached file several options for location, a list of potential guide services and agencies who might be of use in gaining sightseeing privileges for some areas, as well as a current layout of the station as it now stands, showing potential neighboring businesses etc. Also included are the usual lease agreements for signing, rules and regulations for the station, and helpful contact information.

Our company, Cruon Commercial House, wishes to lease space in the laboratory area to do both subspace, and antigravity research. We are working on drawing energy from the magnetic fields and lightwaves in subspace into normal space, while this research is potentially dangerous, it could have tremendous energy potential. There are some areas of subspace and hyperspace where light is much more energetic, as well as magnetism is much stronger. We are also working on developing nanite antigravity machines designed to separate materials on the nanoscale. This will allow greater ability to clean up toxic material as well as improvements in materials research. We would like two 10,000 square foot laboratories made available.

CEO Kargaah, Trade Minister for the Herpy Empire, disembarked from his personal Monitor II shuttle, followed by an impressive retinue of standard-grade diplomats in their black-with-silver trimmed robes, scientists from a variety of fields all gibbering among themselves in their science-speak, and assorted officers from a variety of private-held corporations. The total numbers ran near 100 beings in all, including baggage handlers, personal aides and the odd strumming minstrel.
Kargaah leaned over to his assistant, swiveling his cigar to the opposite side of his face. "All tha plans have been finalized and cleared? Nothing last minute we need to go over?"
"Aye aye, sir. I've attached soft-copy of the agreement to your P.D.A. and had it distroed to everyone here. Nothing harmful in either a biological or artificial means. Statement of Purpose documents have been signed and notarized by everyone present."
Kargaah nodded his head. 'Good, good. Most important, though....how's the public house looking?"
"I spoke with the manager there. Eveything's been looked over by station inspectors. Nothing harder than Dominion wine is being served and all glassware is of Resin composite, so shatterings will be kept to a minumum."
As the crowd walked, talked, gibbered and tuned, they came to their destination. That being the Herpetological Inn and Store. As per the agreed on plans it would serve as a multifunction area. Trade discussion, pedestrian forms of commerce, light entertainment and a resting place for visiting dignitaries both foreign and domestic to the Empire. Of non-public knowledge was also the fact it would serve as a small research base for medical research and agricultural hydroponics testing.
After entering the Inn and Store, the various groups promptly broke up into smaller bunches and headed off to their areas of interest. Traders opened up their smallish kiosks full of examples of goods they could sell on a much grander scale, Diplomats opened up their offices with one staff member at the front of each in something resembling an information booth, and the public house flung open its doors, where the scent of spiced foods and light beverage were allowed to waft outwards. Inn staff manned their desks, taking down names of visiting dignitaries, comfirming reservations and so on.
Kargaah looked about, swelling out his chest and smelling the air deeply. "Aaahhh....smells like Zzouud on Festival Night. If i'm needed, ring up my office. I'll be running through any last minute checks that need be done."

I can understand your concern for security, Pilon considers good security of the utmost importance. I don’t know if it would be possible, but optimally we would like to construct a Grand Casino that can be attached to the greater station. Should this not work another facility of similar size would work. I can’t speak for the Megacorps, but I think they will likely prefer some space in the larger Pilonese sector, if not I’ll have them forward lease documents to you.

In the attached documents are the details on the planned Casino, should you OK it. As the Pilonese frequent many nations and travel quite a bit outside of our homeland we have developed an extensive screening process to filter out harmful contagions. Pilonese construction methods create tightly controlled Eco-Systems that prevent any unauthorized contaminants from entering or leaving the area, we do this for our own protection as well as that of the outside environment.
I have also included details on Pilonese security measures to maintain this environment. Should they prove satisfactory we can ensure the safety of both your other tenants and ourselves and can be reasonable assured that no excessive dangers will be brought to the station by our presence.

To:

From:
Agáta Nársúlë
Minister for Science, Research and Technology of the Xirniumite Government
The Eternal Republic of Xirnium
Dear Minister di Medici
Kindest regards from the Eternal Republic.
It is with the greatest enthusiasm that I have been made aware of your Government’s solicitous offer with respect to the Dominion’s Sun-Saturn L4 point space station. The rather pleasant purpose of my letter, therefore, is to indicate to you Cabinet’s interest in leasing space aboard the much renowned Machiavelli Station.
My Ministry has identified the suitability of the Machiavelli Station for the purposes of establishing various government and commercial offices, docking facilities for a modest XSA spaceport (including storage amenities and maintenance services), living compartments for Xirniumite and foreign staff and visitors, and an assortment of research and development laboratories. As the Dominion has apparently well noticed, the Eternal Republic recently embarked on an unprecedented expansion of the Xirniumite space programme. The Xirniumite Space Agency’s ambitious agenda includes exploration of various celestial bodies and areas of interest in the Sol system as well as tentative forays into the field of interstellar travel. The existence of a Xirniumite-leased outpost at the fourth Sun-Saturn Lagrangian point would bring us immeasurably closer to the fulfilment of both such goals.
Our legal advisors have closely examined the text of the terms, conditions and warranties that have been offered by the Dominion Government with respect to all contractual arrangements for the lease of space within the Machiavelli Station; and upon their independent advice the Prime Minister has agreed that such terms are both fair and reasonable.
I hope that you will find our proposal acceptable. The Prime Minister, in particular, has shown a keen desire to witness the success of this project; both for the benefit it would bring to the Xirniumite space programme and to further deepen friendly cooperation and cordial diplomatic relations between the Eternal Republic and the Dominion. If you should accept our offer, officials from the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology shall be dispatched at your convenience to conclude negotiations for all relevant specific details of our proposed contract for lease.
I eagerly await your reply.
Yours sincerely

Within the Sakkran trade and research section, a squirrelled-away BioMed research lab had completed its unpacking, and finished calibrating its equipment. At the moment, the research team was looking over some samples of common medical symbiotes, used mostly for the accelerated healing of internal organs and the like. Also on the itinerary was the specialized burn-treatment symbiotes. "We've got the research funding and samples secured nicely. What're we looking at anyways?" A white-clad BioMedTech named Sshees looked over his focusing-lenses at the PDA in front of him.
"Kastaa wants us to look into performance enhancing symbiotes. They say it's to accelerate physical therapy, but i'm wagering it'll have military applications more likely." The female in a grey coat, named Maaka, looked over the nutrient-bath canisters with a discerning eye.
"Military.... well, as long as the Teeth are good....." A dismissive wave of his hand signifies the end of his interest in where it'll all go in the end. "I took this job to see how far my mind and insight will get me, not to debate morals. Science for the sake of science, yes?"
"Science for the sake of the Empire!" The grey-coated female snapped at him, her dewlap flexing a bit of red. "We're here to promote health for Imperial Citizens of all walks, not for our own ego-building." She turned her attention back ot the nutrient-baths. "Really, how some people got this job....makes me think there's a conspiracy afoot out to test the limits of my patience."
Sshees looked at her with one eye, a sneer coming over his face. "You were raised on Titan, weren't you? Hotbed of high-minded idealism? That must've been so nice being cradled away from the harsh reality of Real Life."
Maaka looked up from her scrutinizing, fixing Shees with both eyes. "And you were raised in Hreer on Earth, where the taint of mammalian greed and apathy has seeped through your scales." The room started to reek of cinnamon.
The white-clad lab tech waved a dismissive hand at her. "Don't get your dewlap in a knot. We're here to work, not debate. Are you letting your emotions cloud your work-ethic?" His tone had a non-subtle hint of mockery to it as he turned his back on her to mount a sample into some diagnostic equipment.
Maaka turned back to her scrutinizations. Watch your tail, you vrelte-eating son of a sewer-gator. My eyes are on you. She made notations on her PDA from her scrutinizings and went down the row to the next sample.

Business offices, living arrangements for those taking up any sort of residence on the station to better facilitate said business, as well as warehousing space for any items or materials that fall within the station laws and guidelines are also available on request. We are pleased that you have decided that you still have a need for our services, and will be quite happy to work with you within allowable parameters.
Please find attached several options for available spaces and amenities, along with the usual packet of contact information, station rules, useful information, etc with the contract for station use. We sincerely hope that this proves to be a profitable venture for you and yours.

In reviewing we agree to the proposed plans with the caveat that the Pilonese Casino be properly isolated, given all the bio-processes involved. We are willing to make some engineering concessions to facilitate this, for a price, with the additional insurance of Zero-One technology and oversight on the outermost containment which we have been assured is available.
In this way, you will be able to benefit from being a part of the main station, with options for outbuildings still available on request, and we are assured of as perfect a containment and security system, given the efforts of both yourselves, and our contracted Zero-One assistance, so as to keep our investors and patrons assured and content.
Should this be acceptable, you are cleared to begin coordinating efforts for construction. We look forward to the increased business and draw your casino will assuredly bring to Machiavelli, and hope that it will be a profitable venture for the Pilonese interests.

In looking at the requests outlined in your gracious response, I am quite certain that we are capable of taking care of accommodating your needs. Given the expanse, we might suggest going with your own or shared larger outbuilding for a centralized location for your holdings, unless having various offices and quarters spread throughout the station as per standard layout is not a problem. We still have bays available on the main structure, so direct landings for your ships and ample warehousing space would be simple enough – either option has pros and cons, dependant on how you would prefer things to be run.
However, with mention of your expanding space program, I have been shall we say ‘reminded’ by my superiors that the ongoing matter with the Kaeneians and Europa forces us to put any such plans on hold until such time as a mutually satisfying end has been achieved there. The Kaeneians are allied to us both through the Triumvirate, and the Non-Democratic Alliance, and as such we have a keen interest in maintaining cordial relations with them.
We understand the rather delicate situation there, having fought side by side with the Kaeneians in the Sketch war some time ago, and their reluctance to have foreigners running hither and thither on their legitimately-claimed and defended territory. While the all of the particulars are unknown to us, we will still need assurances from the Kaeneians that entering into a closer relationship with Xirnium in regards to Machiavelli, and offering you a foothold just that much closer to their Jovian holdings would present no problems.
Once such assurances can be gained, I am hopeful that we can proceed apace with the particulars of your proposal. Please accept my apologies for the ever-frustrating ins and outs of politics that so often plague us in our dealings – we wish you well in your endeavors, and look forward to working with you in the future.

It would be a pleasure to work with you in setting up the offices you have proposed on Machiavelli. Both ample office space and appropriate docks are still available – I’ll be sure to forward several options for your perusal so that you can see some of what we have to offer.
As for the communications, be advised that all station-based transmissions are monitored for security purposes, though we do our best not to trod on toes in our efforts to maintain. I’m certain that in working with you we could install the nu-space network you have mentioned, so long as it does not go outside the parameters set forth in the lease agreement or station rules, which I’m certain will be no problem, all things considered.
Please find attached several proposed options for offices, docking, etc, the usual lists of contacts, station rules, and other helpful information, and a copy of the lease agreement, once you’re prepared to finalize.

Machiavelli Station Security Notice
Regarding: Bio/Ecological Security
Priority: Minimal
As requested by the oversight administration, I have recently upgraded Machiavelli Station's measures against the internal spread of biocontaminants. Previously station security emphasis relied mostly upon prevention and detection through access points and in sector environmental control, but with the potential of new biological formulations being input from within the Station itself more active measures are required, such as:
Nanological/biological active filters in both sector environment control and major transit points in the life support system.
Nanological 'grey mist' dispersed as an active 'immune' response throughout the system to detect and eliminate harmful pathogens, primarily considered a response to an acute dispersal.
Customized biological 'dust' spread into the system to attach to the receptors of the most common and perhaps most 'annoying' pathogens (common cold), thus neutralizing them--best for chronic and otherwise unavoidable presences.
Electromagnetic screens used in tandem with filters to irradiate life support resources in case of acute infection.
Active measures and separation between individual sectors and decks, allowing entire modules to be isolated if necessary.
Special use zones (such as the volume to be dedicated to the Pilonese Casino) have been especially upgraded, nominally open but with additional measures taken to isolate them from the greater Station ecology and to ensure a hermetic seal in case such dramatic measures become necessary.
There have been no acute pathogen dispersal events to date of note (the occasional very sick traveller notwithstanding). The continued health and safety of Station occupants and itinerants have not been under threat.
As could probably be expected there has been a great deal of intermixing from all of the various locations Machiavelli does business with. While the Station certainly cannot be defined as pathogen-free (as such an endeavor would be far too expensive and difficult to undertake to reach even minimal 'clean-room' standards) the latest atmospheric census shows only marginal levels of non-dehabilitating pathogens that are well below the environmental standards of their origins.
However, the upgrade in census-taking equipment have detected several microorganisms that were somehow missed by previous scans. I have identified most of them, but several appear to be of unknown origin, probably mutations of imported microbiology adapting to the Station's ecosystem. Initial tests do not show them to be pathogenic but I will be studying them in detail to confirm longer-term effects. Several are actually surprisingly numerous and so the risk of exposure is probably high, given the lack of detection up until now, but there is no evidence that they are anything other than completely benign.
Additional information is available upon request to the Department of Station Security at any sector office or deck station.

I can tell you that there has been quite alot of talk in Pheonix Corp about expansion projects into the international community. My Partner Genesis Simber, has asked me to mention that she is interested in meeting with the Dominion to discuss additional business dealings that will be mutually beneficial for both Genesis Corp and yourselves, so I am mentioning it here, She wishes to meet with a rep.
My analysts have assured me that the costs to ensure security for the rest of the station and our own bio-sphere will be within acceptable limits and are eager to begin discussion with your station engineers to work out the details. From the plans I saw I feel confident that our security measures, and those of your station, will be adequate to prevent any major problems between the station and the Casino, our containment systems have done well in other areas and I am attaching the case studies conducted here for your engineers to review as well should they desire.
We plan to open up a Corporate Office for the newly created Pheonix Corp within the Casino now instead of offices for Genesis Corp and PPC, as both are now Subsidiaries of Pheonix Corp.
I am dispatching our first team of Bio-Engineers within the day to begin the growth process for the Casino, it will take approximately twelve weeks for the Casino to be completed, we will keep you informed of progress in our weekly Project Management Review and will update you with all relevant information and any changes.

In light of government decisions regarding the recent Pilonese ‘Freedom of Movement Act’ (http://z4.invisionfree.com/The_Planet_Mars/index.php?showtopic=807&st=0&#entry3283240), the activity levels of security on Machiavelli were soon increased to an organized yet intense level rarely seen.
Every Pilonese citizen was as discretely as possible, tracked down, given a minimal time to gather what belongings they could and were appropriate, and politely yet firmly escorted to either their own transports, or those made available for their exit from Machiavelli.
The Pilonese casino was shut down, all assets and operations immediately frozen, and the patrons gently removed, citing security issues when questions were asked. Any files or records were confiscated, and any rooms, ports, and other holdings were put under lockdown.
Those being escorted out were taken beyond Machiavelli space, and either released on their own recognizance, or taken to a Pilonese location of their request, free of charge.
One and all, they were checked for anything that might constitute an item capable of DNA extraction/gathering, and if found, the items were confiscated. If the beings themselves seemed to serve such a purpose, these individuals alone were held for further questioning.
Those Pilonese with complaints or questions were given a standard sheet with contact information for the various offices, such as Trade, and Public Relations, again stating the reason for their removal as 'the immediate security of the station'.

Things had run surprisingly smoothly over the past long while - the only real hiccup having been when the Pilonese were asked to vacate the premises. Machiavelli had become quite the bustling trade hub, often a vacation spot for not only businessmen, but those rich and privileged who liked to casually drop that they'd spent their weekend up on Machiavelli, gambling, dancing, dining, being pampered, what have you.
Even those without a lot of filthy lucre had dozens of different entertaiments at their fingertips from the high class, to the down and dirty. Machaivelli had it all - the good, and the bad.
As with any place where money flowed, organized crime had perhaps found a foothold, though they by no means ran the joint - much to their dissatisfaction, no doubt. Still, many a legitimate-seeming business elsewhere, as well as here, could serve as a perfect front for less pleasant business, for those who knew what to look for.
Perhaps there were bits of security paid to look the other way so long as the goings on didn't endanger the station - or security in general. Perhaps certain activities 'escaped' notice when needed, but it never seemed to upset the ebb and flow of Machiavelli, and as such, life went on there unperturbed.

Machiavelli Station was a point of pride for those involved in its development, of that there was no doubt. It had been a first for the Dominion, and thus far, its only foray into space station construction. In keeping with those things the nation found important, it had become a hub of activity for trade, commerce, diplomacy, and of course, entertainment.
The many nations who had gathered to lease space and participate in the creation of this unique location had thus far shown unprecedented success in both co-existing well enough, and creating such a diverse place where opportunities those who might not, in the normal course of things, interact with one another, existed. Not only that, but the Dominion had regular shuttle services departing from within its own borders and holdings, and any other locations that they had been able to contract with, so as to offer those who lacked the ability to travel such distances on their own could affordably manage to partake in the experience as well.
Machiavelli, and its outlying structures – of which there were by this time, many – hung like a shining, cold jewel in the darkness of space, comfortably held in orbit at the Saturn L4 point. From the station itself, thousands of ports opened a view to the comings and goings of regular traffic to its various docking stations, outlying constructs, and of course, views of Saturn and The Ring.
Inside could be found nearly everything one could imagine to see, taste, or experience – within reason. Embassy Row, as it came to be called unofficially, was an area mostly populated by various governments, corporations, and satellite offices where business and diplomacy dominated, with scattered eateries and small office supply points, along with the usual security checkpoints and offices that were located throughout the structure.
Hotels, casinos, spas, sportsplexes, restaurants, coffee and tea shops, movie theaters of all sorts, arcades, simulators, zero gravity entertainment, opera and ballet houses, clubs, hookah cafes, shopping centers, botanical gardens, scientific displays, art galleries, and at least one menagerie – all could be found on the various levels and sections not devoted wholly to warehousing, or scientific research. Among these, less visible establishments also flourished, such as escort services, massage parlors, pleasure palaces, drug houses and other potentially questionable dens of hedonistic activities.
Lifts at the center of the station provided express passage to the various levels, small ‘cabs’ provided the same, for a price, along the outer rings, and within, one could find moving sidewalks, escalators, and even an enterprising company who had established a fleet of rickshaws, allowed visitors to move around on the large levels with ease and comfort.
Security was present, but not in an ominous or painfully obvious way. Help was available where needed, as well as medical facilities and first aid centers. Police boxes of a sort could be found on each level where assistance could be requested, reports made, complaints lodged, and questions asked. A good deal of the security measures in place were subtle or unseen, keeping the comfort as well as the safety of the visitors in mind. And, as with any large organization or structure or as it was, community, there were the occasional corrupt individuals who could be ‘convinced’ to look the other way or perhaps investigate a person or organization more thoroughly than the situation warranted – all for the right price. No system was perfect, but all in all, things ran rather smoothly all the same.
Not only were there a plethora of sights and sounds to be experienced, but there was always room for more, should the enterprising sentient choose to embark on a business venture. Diplomatic and business contacts could be made, deals brokered, problems solved – permanently or otherwise – pleasures sought, fantasies fulfilled, and perhaps just a simple peace of mind achieved. It was all up to the visitor and what they wanted to accomplish when setting foot on Machiavelli. And the truly fun part of it all, is that it was open to almost everyone.
ooc: See here (http://www.nswiki.net/index.php?title=Dread_Lady_Nathicana) for some DLN info, here (http://www.nswiki.net/index.php?title=Machiavelli_Station) for Machiavelli summary, and here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=354676&page=1) for an idea on Dominion law and the usual expectations of etiquette for these sorts of open stories and the like. Feel free to take what you like and run with it – I’ll be happy to rp along, assist where I can, and mediate where necessary. To those of you familiar, you know I’m on irc, for those with questions, tg me and I’ll do what I can to assist. This was always intended as a location people could use to have fun with, rp on, and use as a backdrop for their own stories if they wanted without having to worry about bombs going off everywhere, war being waged over ridiculous things, and stupidly overpowered stuff ruining a potentially good story. Hope some ideas here and details help the visualization – not going to even try to map things out, just know that the command center is at the very tip top, and everything else goes from there.

Dear sir,
It is my pleasure to request your consideration of the attached proposal for the establishment of a CCEF technical hospital and foreign outreach point aboard Machiavelli Station, the Projects Committee having recently voted in favour of this submission. The CCEF hopes to offer commercially viable (and highly effective) cybernetic enhancement to the general public aboard Machiavelli Station (provided that such is not contrary to Dominion laws), in accordance with the mission statement of the CCEF and Article One of the Concord's Charter For Continuous Revolution.
The CCEF's work is known throughout the Outer Dominions as superior to any competitor, and I hope that our good reputation may soon spread to Saturnian space.

The shimmering metal of the immense four-and-a-half mile long mass driver gleamed brilliantly in the early morning sunlight. The base was a hive of activity as the ground crews prepared for the shuttle launch. Instead of the usual unmanned payload, this shuttle was equipped with it’s own booster assembly, necessary since the mass driver launch would be transporting personnel as well as materiel.
Stepping from the escorting Jeep, Second Lieutenant Michael Crussov looked up at the massive launch platform. As part of the team from the ADF’s Institute for Aerospace Studies, Michael was going to be one of those passengers. The rest of his team stepped out as well, following in step behind him as he led the way towards the platform. An elevator would take them up the several stories to the actual launch device, giving him all the time to think of their new venture.
Hlin, Motokata
The second mass driver operated by the Commonwealth had been built in cooperation with one of its allies, Motokata. Now, as it prepared for launch, the civilian facility was a flurry of traffic. A helicopter had landed during the chaos, and a group of four stepped out. Each wore civilian clothing, save for a fifth in Commonwealth ADF grays. The Air Force officer led them forward, pointing at certain areas or turning to explain something.
They were met by a similar team of four, also led by a military officer. One civilian from each group stepped forward to introduce themselves and their colleagues.
“Dr. Dorian Blevins,” said one, extending his hand.
“Dr. Nora Chase,” said the other, the wind whipping her strawberry-blonde hair behind her.
Nora was part of the Red Star team assembled to go to Machiavelli, while Dorian was leading the General Energies team. Though the owners of their respective companies were bitter rivals, the scientists shared no such animosity, and in fact, both were respective of one another’s careers. And while Nora was heading up the medical research to be conducted, Dorian would be working with aerospace design.
FSS Flame of the Æsir LCNS-01
Sulking in the dead of space in low orbit above the earth, the small corvette, one of the most advanced ships in the fleet, awaited its next assignment. It would rendezvous with the two shuttles, ferrying them and the team already assembled on the ship to Machiavelli Station. Standing on the bridge, Lt. Cdr. Moira Ramius, Captain of the Æsir, surveyed the vast emptiness before her and the great orb of the earth below. She certainly didn’t mind the mission, but after two years as master of the vessel, she had come to yearn for more; a peculiar trait in a Commonwealth Defense officer. Taking a silver pocketwatch from her pocket, Moira counted down the moments to launch.
Also onboard was a team of five cosmonauts, who were on the team to provide assistance in their various fields. They had gathered at a starboard observation port, looking out from the earth towards the area of space they would soon travel to, yearning for the trip of a lifetime.

A technical hospital would be an interesting addition, so long as you are sure to keep our staff updated as to procedures, substances, and any potentially hazardous materials involved. Be aware that the laws require all enhancements be registered with Station Security, so setting up some sort of fast-track process for your patients to have their records and cards updated would likely be in your best interests.
Enhancements are not unknown, as we have several close allies who have worked with enhancements of various sorts for years – so we are not opposed to you opening up your own branch, so long as all the paperwork is properly processed, and for our own citizens, backgrounds checked and cleared before procedures are carried out. What you do with the citizens of other nations is your business – again, so long as their security cards are updated accordingly for our records.
Foreign outreach has always been a principle purpose for Machiavelli, and we have areas for such ventures set aside for just that, along with a plethora of other governments, agencies, and corporations. I’m certain that sufficient offices and quarters can be found, as well as space for your hospital alongside our more commercial settings. Lodgings for your employees and representatives have several options available, such as building directly into your office space, renting as a block, or allowing them to make their own choices in the primarily residential areas, as indicated on the following attachments.
Please find also attached several suggestions and prices for spaces available that you might find of interest. Unless you plan on requiring a huge amount of space, we would recommend those aboard the main structure.
We look forward to doing business with you, and hope that this venture will prove mutually profitable for both our organizations.

With final preparations complete, the SSTO was ready. The mass driver fired after a slow countdown, rocketing down the accelerator and blasting into the sky, it's rockets firing once it cleared the magnetic railing.
Hlin, Motokata
As the Bifrost mass driver fired, the Hlin driver began its own countdown, firing mere minutes after its predecessor. The civilian team held on, knowing the shock of a launch, though neither had ever experienced one before.
FSS Flame of the Æsir LCNS-01
As the SSTO's launched, the ship prepared to recieve them, lowering it's orbit and maneuvering into retrieval position. Captain Ramius was quiet, looking at the numerous technical displays afforded her. Moving in orbit at thousands of miles an hour, she was expected to catch two craft at the same speed launched from different areas...much could go wrong.
An hour later....
The Æsir had successfully retrieved its new passengers, the SSTO's departing from whence they came as the last of the personnel disembarked. Ramius had been down in the hangar to greet them.
"Welcome aboard the Æsir," she greeted them in unison. The military officers saluted, to which she returned. "The travel to the Tyr Spacedock will be three hours, from which we'll recieve additional supplies. We should arrive at Machiavelli five hours afterwards. Prepare for spacefold in ten minutes," she added. With that, she excused herself and left the rest of the pleasantries to her XO, Lieutenant Breshnye.
On the bridge once more, Ramius took her seat in the command chair.
"Astrometrics, are the fold calculations completed?" she demanded.
"Yes, Comrade-Captain," the officer replied, "Calculations for spacefold are completed."
"Helm, what's our position?"
"Captain, we are holding position as per Astrometrics calculations and are not inside Terran or Lunar magnetic fields."
"Very good," she nodded, picking up a handset, "All hands, set Condition Two; prepare for immediate spacefold. She placed the handset down and waited impatiently as each compartment answered 'ready.' Once the last area was readied, she stood up, stout and proud. "Initiate spacefold!"
From the ships immense and mysterious furnaces, unfathomable energy was created and released. Out in space, motes of incandescent light sparked and died, their presence leaving a strange aura about the ship. Archs of energy traversed the surface of the vessel, their strange colors lighting up the night. At once, the motes and lightning solidified into a singular orb surrounding the Æsir. In a moment the orb died and dissipated, and the ship was nowhere in sight.
Tyr Spacedock, Mars
Archs of light probed the darkness of space. As before, orbs of energy sparked to life and died in milliseconds, fading to the nothingness they had come from. A sphere of brilliant light appeared, and as the luminescent orb faded off, the Æsir emerged. Its conventional engines flared, aiming towards the spacedock.

Attachment(s): Station facilities plans (revised)
OOC: This following assuming all goes well ...
The Concord starship approaching Machiavelli Station is a truncated wedge three hundred and fifty meters long and five hundred across, painted a cheerful arterial red (this is traditional). It is named Herald of Altruistic Harmony, which ought to be ironic in any freighter as heavily armed as this one is. It decelerates towards the station on four fat fusion exhaust plumes at a speedy fifteen standard gravities (and the station's sensors will show that it is not, in fact, under artificial gravity).
The Herald of Altruistic Harmony comes to rest relative to the station with nary a wasted erg of thrust, and the representatives of the Concord Cybernetic Engineering Federation are soon aboard (and coated in a thick layer of frosted atmospheric moisture, because the Herald is not pressurized, either). The seven cyborgs range in height from five to ten feet, and while all are bipedal and reasonably humanoid, the similarities stop there; their chassii range from a pair of massive supercargos equipped with outsized hydraulic arms to a petite female humaniform, with a variety of statuesque seeming suits of armour in between.
Despite external appearances, they are not robots; each of them holds a securely protected human brain and an efficient nutrition system, albeit that the former has been fairly heavily enhanced and the latter is almost entirely mechanical.
There is one other similarity, to be honest; each and every one of them is armed, and in the Concord the "right to bear arms" is meant rather more literally than elsewhere. The larger two are also running off highly powered (if highly compact) nuclear batteries. But they're polite and entirely cooperative with the customs agents (and speak flawless Dominion Italian). Their spokescyborg, the childlike gynoid Continual-Revolution-Is-The-Safeguard-of-Liberty Adams, explains that the Herald bears the initial equipment and parts of the Concord technical hospital and outreach center, and that the appropriate staff will be arriving later, when all is ready.

"Our hyperdrives are more efficient by over an order of magnitude," his science officer Hortatius replied, having heard this gripe several times since the ship left Asuras on the journey to scout Earth and its environs. "Its a trade-off and an equilibrium that has been arrived at after tens out thousands of years of deliberation."
"It doesn't mean this flight hasn't been boring as hell," Grogan said.
"Three weeks is inconsequential," Horatius said.
"Maybe for someone who's hundreds of years old. I'm twenty-eight. I used to have a social life before I took this job."
Horatius frowned. "I'm only a hundred ten, that's not even into middle age. And I'll have you know I have a very active social life as well."
"Sure."
The mess hall's speakers came to life. "Bridge to Grogan. We're about to drop out of hyperspace, sir."
"Thank you, lieutenant. I'll be up shortly." Grogan looked at his companion. "Well, let's go."
A few minutes later, Provacator entered normal space. It was a small ship, barely three hundred meters long and based on a gunship design with a large mission-adaptable module grafted into the middle. It had little in the way of obvious armament, beyond some long suspicious-looking spines, and in fact most of its missile and secondary weapons had been removed to make room for sensors and science labs.
"Wow," Grogan said, staring at the bridge's main screen. "That's a lot of ships."
"Nearly ten thousand in the immediate area," said cargo officer Leceuthea. "That's just the traffic around the planet you call Saturn. There may well be over a million ships within the system... the number keeps changing randomly. Significant concentrations around Saturn, Earth, Mars, and Venus. Quite a lot appear to be warships."
They had heard that Sol was a madhouse from the independent trader another exploration group had contacted weeks before, but they hadn't quite believed it. Yet there it was. Mars alone probably had hundreds of times more military equipment in orbit than the entire Lantean fleet, and the shear amount of visible firepower near Saturn was mind-boggling. Even the knowledge that the ZPM-powered Constitution was lurking nearby as backup wasn't much consolation for Grogan - if someone started shooting, things would get very bad very quickly.
It was also confirmation of what they had already suspected - Earth in this universe was far, far different from home.
"Corporal Hicks, please start transmitting to the station along standard frequencies, in English," he ordered after a moment.
"Channel open, sir."
"Machiavelli station, this is the Atlantean starship Provacator. We are here on a peaceful mission of exploration and trade. We had heard this was an open port and were wondering what the terms for docking and beginning some kind of trade would be."

Tyr Spacedock, Mars
The Commonwealth's farthest-reaching outpost was located in orbit around the red planet, it's name a pun on the name long-given to the rusty rock. Unlike the Asgard station, which was built from a small planetoid, Tyr was completely manmade, utilizing materials and metals taken from Mars herself. It was a singular shaft, with three "ribs" along it, curving in an oblong half-circle. The Æsir had docked on the lowermost starboard 'rib,' as it was loaded with the final supplies.
Captain Ramius, however, had a different task at hand to manage. She had come down to the portside hangar bay, observing as the ship was disarmed. As a further precaution to approaching Machiavelli, Spacy Command had ordered a complete disarmament of the ship and its airwing. She observed an SF-01 spacefighter undergoing the process now, coils of transuranic 20mm rounds being removed from its gun stores and loaded into large ammunition containers. Missiles, rockets and other weapons were being similarly stored, deep within the armory of the ship.
Ramius turned from the sight and headed back to the bridge to oversee the deactivation of the weapon systems. She passed crewmen along the corridors, reassuring them of their peaceful mission and that the lack of weapons in no way made them vulnerable, though she reserved doubts herself. Taking a dropshaft upward, Ramius let the quietness of the tube to calm her own nerves. At the right level, she stepped forward, back onto solid deck plating.
"Captain on the bridge," the deck officer greeted her as Ramius waved off the 'attention.'
"Are we ready to disarm?" she inquired.
"Yes, Comrade-Captain," the deck officer, Ensign Crusso answered. "We are awaiting orders."
"Deactivate offensive systems," Ramius replied.
"Aye, aye," Crusso said. "Commencing with weapons shutdown. Mjollnir cannons deactivated, Baldr Gauss cannons deactivated...Point-Defense railguns on cold standby; offensive LIDAR system deactivated, all missiles and rockets stored and accounted for-sealing all launchers. Countermeasures on standby. Captain, we are disarmed," he reported.
"Hmm..." she nodded in response.
Nearly an hour later, the ship had left dock once more, heading towards its final destination. In a fleeting glimpse of its earlier fold, the ship was gone once more.
Machiavelli Station (finally)
The fabric of space was once again deformed, contracted and expanded as the Æsir emerged from the nethers of the universe. Sparkling motes of anti-protons and excess matter glinted off of the ship's hull as it held station outside of the Machiavelli's cordon.
Ramius picked up the handset and the Comm. officer nodded that they were broadcasting.
"This is Captain Ramius of the Commonwealth Spacy ship Flame of the Æsir. We have come to deliver our scientific and research personnel along with their equipment as per our agreement with you. Awaiting clearance to dock."

The Citadel
All was found to be in order, and what preparations necessary were made in anticipation of the arrival of the Citadel delegation, and the rest of the standard communiqués were made en route to clear the way for docking.
New arrivals were always greeted by a station liaison, in this case Marko Piersanti, along with various other sentients who might have an interest or be potentially helpful to whatever party was newly boarding. In this case, it included a member of security to brief them in person concerning the carrying of weapons aboard Machiavelli – which while allowed, was monitored and registries kept. In the case of mechanoids, any non-standards were also required to be registered – as any special abilities or upgrades or implants were of any sentient being coming aboard. The local medical practitioner’s office was also represented, Maintenance and Construction, and the Business and Trade commission as well, mostly to make initial contact and offer any assistance necessary.
Checking in is a simple process, and ident cards are assigned to each member, each one dually serving as keys for access, and in the case of those companies or governments who have set up monetary accounts for their members, debit cards of a sort. Data ports are available along the station at various spots for quick access of station information, locations, the reporting of incidents, and quick contacts within Machiavelli’s various parts, and basic instructions are given as the Citadel party is escorted to their new holdings. Of course they are all given free run of the station, aside from operational and maintenance areas, and are invited to make themselves at home, not hesitating to request any assistance the staff could offer.
“Oh behalf of the Dominion, welcome to Machiavelli station,” the slender, dark-haired liaison offers, smiling pleasantly.

“Sir, we’re receiving a request for docking and data from a previously unknown source.”
Looking over the message, Commander Gilberto Clemente nods thoughtfully, and quietly orders the usual scans made, and informational packets prepared.
“Direct them in to the main business ring, and get some folks scrambled to make them feel at home. First contacts are always a pleasure. Be certain they understand the basic rules and regs, and assure them of their safety while in our controlled space.”
“Acting, sir.”
“Provocator, this is Machiavelli Station responding to your request. You are more than welcome to dock on the primary ring, as per the following coordinates. If you would please send your ship’s manifest along the secure channel also provided prior to docking, we should have you cleared for boarding shortly.” Instructions are given, a flight path is outlined, assurances made, and a request for transference of informational data is sent.
“The data packet contains information on station rules and regs, basic contacts you may find necessary, an overview of amenities available, and instructions for obtaining your ident cards required of all Machiavelli visitors and staff. A station representative will be on hand at your arrival to make introductions, and help facilitate any requests you may have. We hope you have a pleasant stay, and that we may be of service to you.”
In the meantime, Angelina Jovene, Machiavelli liaison, along with a small group of others makes their way to the designated docking space in order to greet and brief the newcomers.

The message from the Commonwealth ship was indeed expected, and as such, arrangements had been made largely in advance, and standard procedures should have been already known. Still, a request for permission to transmit the standard data pack, and for the ship’s manifest was sent along, as well as docking instructions and flight path coordinates.
Awaiting their disembarkation was station liaison Xander Malatesta, a member from both the Science Ministry and Security, the usual station of persons responsible for the identing of new arrivals, and a large yet graceful cat-like creature dressed in classically exotic attire waiting on just the other side of the checkpoint out of the ebb and flow of the busy port.
“It’s a pleasure to welcome you aboard,” Xander says, offering his hand to whomever steps forward as leader of the group. “If I could direct your group to the checkpoint here, we can get your ident cards assigned, and help get you settled in.”

The Æsir relayed its transmissions as necessary and headed towards the station at 1/4 speed, its conventional engines flaming bluish-white in the darkness of space. It drew in, following the coordinates and course headings to the letter as it approached, finally docking with the station on it's starboard port.
Assembled at the airlock, respectively, was the Captain and the ship's Political Officer, Lieutenant Crussov and the ADF detachment, Doctor's Blevins and Chase and their team, and a pair of Spacy Marines. As the door opened and the station liason came forward, the boatswain's whistle blew, setting all the military officers to attention.
"The pleasure is ours," Ramius intercepted his hand, "Lieutenant Commander Moira Ramius, Captain of the Æsir," she greeted him. The heads of the various groups stepped forward,
"Good day," said the Doctors.
"Good day, sir," Lieutenant Crussov replied.
"We hope this will bring about greater relations between yourselves and the Soviet," butted in the Political Officer.
"Erm...Mr. Malatesta, this is the ship's Political Officer, Ensign Roshcenko."
The Ensign, unlike the other military officers in attendance, didn't have the hardness of the others. He had a tendency to slouch, and it was apparent his uniform wasn't as neatly pressed as the others. There was also the unmistakable polite contempt in Ramius' voice and manner towards him. Ramius directed the team to assemble for their cards.
"We'll be having crew moving equipment in, will they all need ident cards?" Ramius asked Xander.

The Concorders show no visible signs of displeasure at the lengthy acclimatization and registration process (but then, most of them have immobile metal masks for faces, and the Dominioners probably aren't equipped to pick up their radio-frequency emotes). Such are the hazards of doing business with filthy statists, after all, and experience has shown that you can't spread the Revolution by force of arms in a post-industrial society. Force of economics works much better, and has the added benefit of earning the CCEF a pretty penny (even if that penny is hard to convert into the system of bartering-with-IOUs the Concord uses as a de facto internal currency between Committees).
"Thank you, mister Piersanti," Liberty Adams chirps in reply. "I am sure it shall be pleasant to be here." Adams nods to the others (this purely for the benefit of the Dominioners, of course), who nod politely to their hosts and head back to the docks to begin unloading equipment.
"Yes, this will do quite nicely," Adams says, looking about the empty space. "You have our thanks."

"Well, so far, so good," Grogan said. "Helm, take us in."
The ship easily came in to its assigned slip on a reactionless drive, coming to a full stop just short of the ring, rotating around on its axis, and sliding sideways until its main cargo hatch came into contact with with the extended gantry. After a few seconds, the universal adaptable airlock there made a firm seal with the station's lock. For the moment no other umbilicals were hooked up - until more technical information could be exchanged, it was safer to remain on internal air, water, and power even without the security considerations. It was a pretty good showing for a helmsman who had barely started shaving.
"Excellent work, corporal," Grogan said. "Lieutenant Costanza, you're in charge -" God help them all "- while I'm gone. If anything goes wrong, get the ship out of here and call for reinforcements."
"Yes, sir!"
"Leceuthea, you ready?"
"I have been ready for some time, Captain," she replied coolly.
"Let's go, then."
It was a short walk down to the airlock. Most of the ship's small Marine contingent were waiting there, fully kitted out with armor, rifles, and, if Grogan knew Marines, enough explosives to vaporize a small city. None of them would be going aboard the station itself in that gear, of course. Grogan and Leceuthea were both equipped only with personal shields and small baton-like stunners.
"Good morning, Sergeant," Grogan said to the Marines' leader.
"Sir," Sergeant Warrington replied. "I'd just like to say again that I feel very uncomfortable that you're going aboard without an escort."
"We're peaceful explorers, Sergeant."
"That's never stopped us before, sir."
"Your concerns are noted, and if we get kidnapped, you have permission to say 'I told you so'."
The cargo hatch hissed open. A slight static filled the air immediately around it, an atmospheric containment field to keep station air and ship air separate. Grogan and Leceuthea stepped through and then past the station's own open hatch. Two of the marines followed them but stopped before entering the station proper and took up guard positions.
"Okay, Grogan, you can do this," he said to himself. The colonels chose him for a reason. Nevermind that there were only a handful of qualified people in the first place, most of whom were off flying battleships or heavy cruisers in strategically important locations.
"Are you nervous, Captain?" Leceuthea asked.
"On my second mission, my entire team was killed and I got the shit beaten out of me by Jaffa," Grogan said. "It left an impression.
"I see."
Grogan and Leceuthea reached Jovene and the other Machiavellian personnel. Grogan was in a simple gray uniform with minimal markings; Leceuthea was in an austere form-fitting beige outfit.
"Hello," Grogan said. "I'm Captain Grogan, and this is our ship's trade delagate, Leceuthea. We're very pleased to meet you."
It was simple, to the point, and (hopefully) left no room for misunderstanding.
