NSTA Tennis - The Ts'khinvali Open

South Osettia
23-01-2005, 17:21
It’s just starting to warm up again, and that means only one thing – it’s time for the tennis season to continue! After a few months break from their sport, the world’s finest players have fully recovered from the trials of the Red Dot Open, and are now ready to do battle again, as they take on the best, and the rest, in the next event on the tennis calendar – the Ts’khinvali Open.

Held in Ts’khinvali, South Osettia, the Ts’khinvali Open is in its fledgling year, but it is hoped to become one of the major tournaments in the tennis community. Home to Gradi Jarenko (seventh seed, men’s) and Olga Waqasie (fourth seed, women’s), South Osettia is well known for its pedigree tennis players, but can they win their first major trophy on home soil, or will Dusk Liege of Audioslavia or Arlen Kamman from Sliponia win their second pieces of silverware? One thing’s for certain – when the weather gets warmer, the courts of Ts’khinvali will be the hottest place to be.

Players that participated (i.e. RPed) in the Red Dot Open will automatically be entered into the Ts’khinvali Open. Those that want to enter for the first time, or just didn’t get around to getting involved last time, should fill out the following entry form:

NATION NAME:
SHORT NAME (3 letters):
MENS NO. 1:
MENS NO. 2:
WOMENS NO. 1:
WOMENS NO. 2:

The order you put your players in is important, as the men and women number ones, will receive an additional bonus over the number twos. You must enter a minimum of two players (either of one sex, or one male, one female) and may enter up to four players. You must enter a number one to enter a number two (i.e. you cannot enter a male number two without entering a male number one first). This may seem obvious to most people, but you never know.

Once you have entered your players, it’s just a case of sitting back and waiting for the tournament to start. When it does, you may begin to RP. RPing is important, as there will be a bonus for doing so. I will not specify what that bonus, but I will say that RPing does not affect your performance in the tournament. Please note that RPing should be a fun activity, and should not be undertaken merely to win. The bonus is merely an incentive to get you to participate – it does not guarantee victory (I realise I may be being a little hypocritical here). It’s really there just to make me feel like I’m doing this for a reason, so please, humour me.

For this tournament, I will be using the rankings created by ORD at the end of the Red Dot Open. However, at the end of the tournament, I will create my own set of rankings, to be used in the next Ts’khinvali Open. Similarly, this tournament will have no affect on the ORD rankings, so please be aware of this fact.

If you feel I have missed anything, please do not hesitate to point it out, so that I can mock you and/or sort it. I’m always open to suggestions on how to improve this tennis experience, but so is my bin, so please think before speaking, because I don’t want to ridicule you…no, I really don’t!

So, with the formalities over, I declare this sign-up open!

Come on people, it's tennis!

Truer words were never spoken - after all, it is tennis.

I'm going to start sending out annoying telegrams if people don't even start looking at this soon.

Kaza Progressa sacrificed one male competitor for a female one in the Red Dot Open. Ask them for more details.

If sign-up gets really slow, I might cut the numbers to 24 per competition, and introduce first-round byes.

I have time :)

32 should be nicer than 24, but hey, you're the organiser.

But that makes me think, why not use a system with groups? Like in the hopman cup? (if I'm not mistaken). And then the best few go through...

Okay, I've made the decision. I've cut the number of participants to 24 and I've decided that we will have a group stage! Four groups of six, each player plays the others once, top four go through to Round 2, and it's knockout from there.

Consequently, the men's competition is now FULL! There are still four places left in the women's competition, so if you like short skirts with your tennis balls, sign up.

Come on, I need two more entries with two women each or I'll settle for one entrant with four women. Now that the World Cup qualifying is over, most people will be able to RP here, so now's the time to get the ball rolling.

I have run a sim of the competiton and I am pleased to say that the scorinator is a success! Just so you know, points are allocated as follows:

A 3-0 set win gives three points to the winner.
A 3-1 set win gives two points to the winner.
A 3-2 set win gives one point to the winner.
The loser gets no points regardless of the set score.

The schedule is as follows:

MD1: Saturday
MD2: Sunday
MD3: Monday
MD4: Tuesday
MD5: Wednesday
R2: Thursday
QF: Friday
SF: Saturday
F/3PPO: Sunday

Now the real fun begins. You can now start to RP - whatever you want: predictions, interviews, the latest tennis news...however you feel, get it down. Remember though, RPing does NOT affect your chance of winning matches, but it does bear significance at the end of the tournament. RP for fun, not because you feel you have to.

"Welcome back. Here, we have Sarah Greyson, the Euroslavian womens' singles champion. How're you doing?"

"I'm doin alright, how about yourself?"

"I'm doing great as well. So you've made it into your first international competition. How does it feel? Are you nervous?"

"Well...I'm very excited at the fact that I get to play against extremely talented women out there. I've been keeping track of all of them, and every singly one of them deserves a lot of respect. I am a bit nervous, but that goes without saying. It's my first International competition, and I've never gone against people outside of Euroslavia. I'm hoping to do my best for my country, first and foremost, but I'm also out there to have a good time."

"Very good, Sarah. How has your performance been as of late?"

"I've been putting in a lot more hours for practice than usual. I want to be able to make a name for myself on the international stage, and make it known that Euroslavia is a powerful nation for womens' tennis. It'd be nice to shake up the rankings, as well as a few of the other nations out there, with a few upsets, but we'll see."

Sarah began to chuckle. She had never been so nervous for something in her life, but she was doing well hiding the fact.

"What's your opinion on Rebecca Storm, the other womens' representative."

"She's young, but she's very talented. I certainly hope that she can do well. If we can get two womens' players up there in the rankings, that would be amazing. I wish her the best of luck too."

"Well, that's all we have for our interview. Euroslavia wishes you and Rebecca the best of luck in the tournament. Make us all proud!"

"Thank you."

From the Sports section of the Daily NewSjwitz:

The Rivalry Continues!

When the draw for The Ts'khinvali Open First Round Group Stage proceeded, a lot of players were wondering who their opponents would be. Tension was in the air as all the seeded players had been drawn into a group and just the unseeded remained. Amongst those Benno Fayrinen and Burt Oppt, lifetime rivals, but also the two best male tennis players in Sjwitz. Seated far from eachother, Benno next to his coach in a row at the front and Burt, together with his wife Catherine J. Oppt (who is also participating, but in the women's tournament, ofcourse) far away in the back at the bar, they both were awaiting in which group they would end up. Benno's name was the first to pop up and when the other paper had a "B" on it, a smile popped onto his face: "Well, I wasn't particularly happy with that draw, I actually don't even know any of these players very well except for the fact that I know they all can play tennis on a high level. I think I smiled just because the tension was finally gone, I knew who I was going to play."

Benno will be playing:
- Julio Arzu of Adam Island
- Harald Beerquaffer of Cockbill Street
- Kenny Miyushira of One Red Dot
- Quaza Qatilko of Kaze Progressa

But ofcourse, there was room for one more player in that group. And you guessed it, Burt Oppt got the spot. Benno stopped smiling immediately, but also Burt almost choked on his martini. Both players weren't particularly fond of having to play eachother, hopefully they can set their rivalry aside for once a play a decent match.

Karl Peters, editor of Sjwitz Sports Illustrated, "I think that we are going to see a great match, ok I know they usually play lousy matches, but this time it's different. We're not in Sjwitz this time, this will be the first time they play eachother in a big tournament away from home. I'm sure they will want to show the people what they've got without thinking about their rivalry too much, or maybe it just helps them play better. Benno still has a bright career in front of him, he's only 22. Burt will try everything to win after he got beaten in the national Championships last month. But anyway, let's stay realistic, what's the big deal, they have to play eachother. They'll probably be fifth and sixth in their group anyway."

After the draw for the men was made, the women's draw was about to proceed. Catherine J. Oppt, who went home immediately after the mens draw together with her husband never saw herself being paired to
- Olga Waqasie of South Osettia
- Angelika Christoforaki of Korinthos
- Halima Jurme of Hiiraan
- Anya Kruchina of Fmjphoenix
- Rebecca Storm of Euroslavia

We haven't been able to get a reaction from her but it seems to be a tough group, looking at the represented countries alone, most have a great sportshistory!

Zulma Verhofstadt, the sexy, longlegged, blue-eyed, got-what-it-takes-to-be-a-model, 16-year old superstar... was very happy when we asked her about the draw: "Happy? Well actually I'm happy for the fact that I've been able to sit through the ceremony and draw procedure without 20 photographers and 10 cameras watching me all the time! Oh it's such a relief being out of the spotlight for a while, but towards the end three guy's were already trying to come on to me. After my first match that'll probably end too. Hopefully I can score a few points, who am I playing anyway?"

For the record, Zulma will be playing in Group D, together with:
- Casee Bajazan of Kaze Progressa
- Maricela Kimberlin of Adam Island
- Fowsiya Kulmiye of Hiiraan
- Daphne Maydelein of One Red Dot
- Sarah Greyson of Euroslavia

She'll definitely win some harts that's for sure, now only if she wins some points together with that.

Summer time; the time when the weather is fine, according to the song. Summer is also the time for sports where the competitors wear as few clothes as possible, such as beach volleyball and nude golf. Another of those sports is tennis, and right here in South Osettia, everybody is talking about the Ts'khinvali Open, the latest in NSTA tournaments. Here's an elderly couple going to collect their pensions from the Post Office. Let's see what they're talking about:

"Here, that tennis tournament starts today, doesn't it."

"Oh yes, the Ts'khinvali Open. Is it on telly?"

"Yes, I think it starts at one."

"Bah! That clashes with my favourite programme, The Naked Chefette. That chefette's got the best pair of..."

Disgusting old man. Anyway, as you can see, everybody who's anybody is talking about the tennis, and today, we can hear from all three of South Osettia's tennis stars: Requso Makinov, Gradi Jarenko and Olga Waqasie.

RM: "Am I looking forward to the match? Of course I am - I mean there's going to be hundreds of women watching me play live, and millions more watching me on television. Mind you, they'll probably be looking more at my perfectly toned, hairless legs than my perfectly tuned, airless serves."

GJ: "Am I on centre court today? Good, I should get the best court in the country; I am the best player in this tournament after all. No-one even comes close to me, and I shall prove it by bring the trophy back home...oh wait, I'm playing at home."

OW (brace yourselves): "Well, yeah, I love this new set up, because it means I get to play more games, which is good because it means I get more practice against the crap players before I face the ones who might put up a bit of a challenge, and then hopefully I can beat them, because I'll have had more practice than them, and did you see what Makinov is wearing today, because he looks like some kind of movie star, which is good for all the sluts out there who want to snog him, but not me, because I've already got boyfriend, and I love him a lot, even though he's a cyclops, but my Mum says "It'll never last", and I say "Yes it will", and she says "No it won't", and I say "Yes it will", and she says "No it won't", and I say "But we've been going out for ages", and she says "So?", and I say "So we've been going out for ages, we're not gonna break up easily", and she says "Shut up!", and I say "Shut up!", and then we slap each other for a bit, and then I like go down the pub, because I'm going to meet my boyfriend there, but then my Mum turns up, and it's like "Oh my God, Mum, I can't believe you're doing this", so yeah, I'm looking forward to it."

Is it over? Thank God for that. So, as the tournament starts today, all our players are practicing really hard by reading magazines, eating Mars bars and signing bestselling books by other people. Let's hope that they can all start off with wins.

Yes they do. (I used to play tennis) If it comes to 8-8 (I think so), then there's a tie-breaker, which is much more complicated....heh, so let's hope it doesn't get to that.

Normally yes, but it mucks up everything for me and my system, so I decided to leave that rule out.
Sjwitz

Tough day for the Sjwitz women today, they both gave it their best shot but came short in the end. Catherine J. Oppt easily took the first set against Euroslavia's Rebecca Storm with some nice shots and after breaking Storm's serve in the first game of the second set, everything seemed to be looking great for her. Her opponent then pulled out her best shots and won 9 games in a row in only 24 minutes. "From one set and a break up to 2 breaks down in the thired set in less than half an hour and there wasn't really much I could do about it, she was just better I think. Well, maybe better next time." said Catherine.

Standings in Catherine's Group:

Zulma Verhofstadt, Sjwitz' other female represenative at the Ts'khinvali Open, performed in an outstanding way today in her match against Sarah Greyson, "only during the second set I lost my concentration a bit". But apart from that her match was just great, almost close enough to qualify for Match of the Day, unfortunately that honour went to Sady Shouta and Liann Sang for their stunning three tie-breaks match. Unfortunately also, was Zulma for losing in the tie-break of the third set. "Yes it's a pity really that the match had to be ended in a tie-break, I was still very fit and I think I would have lasted for another whole set if I had to. But ofcourse this tie-break added some more suspense for the spectators. Few spectators though, I'm not used to play for so few people" Actually there was a great crowd of 1317 spectators, quite high knowing that it's just a first round match between unseeded players. But with the excellent match Zulma played (not to mention those legs again), she's bound to be playing for a bigger crowd tomorrow. Hopefully the match will also end with a better result.

Standings in Zulma's Group:

In the men's tournament, Burt and Benno's confrontation turned out to be a real scrapper of a match. Loads of Errors, almost no winners. In the end, only Burt was happy since he beat Benno and thus got some revenge over last month's lost national championship.

Streeters In Fiendishly Complicated Tournament
Wins Not Enough - You Gotta Sweep 'Em

The male tennis players of Cockbill Street got off to a good start in Ts'khinvali today, winning both matches and taking good control early on. Particularly impressive was Callum McGrath's sweep of Brandon Duchevny of Jangia, holding his serve and breaking once in the first two sets, twice in the third, to win 6-3 6-3 6-2. That victory gave him three points, as one of four in the tournament, and he is now very well set.

An interesting points system has been employed in this tournament, that could conceivably see a player with two 3-0 wins qualify over a player with five 3-2 wins. However, this looks very unlikely in practice, but it shows that washouts are important. And therefore, it was unnecessary when Harald Beerquaffer, the Street's most proficient tennis player, messed up in the third set against 3rd-seed Julio Arzu, losing 2-6 in that - although he did claim the match by 3-1, not bad for a man who is ranked seventeenth in the world.

Still, Zettergren and Hammar in the women's class showed that Streetian tennis still has a bit to go before the Roegrow Open. Sara Zettergren, the tournament's seventh-seed, bowed out in straight sets to top seed Theresia Mehlinger, while One Red Dot's Margarita Brookes never let Irene Hammar into the game, breaking twice in each set as Hammar lost 1-6 2-6.

"Thank you, Bob, All things being considered, Jangia did fairly well today, with our own Liann Sang winning a hotly contested match over Sady Shouta. Unfortunately, Brandon Duchevny did not do so well, getting himself squashed against Callum McGrath of Cockbill Street. Too bad Brandon, but good luck tomorrow to both of our competitors.

We've got mixed results.

#2 Daniel gave a good match against Hiiraan's #5 Khallid in a fine opening match. Despite losing by small margins and losing the first two sets 6-7 3-6, he showed mental power and beat Khallid flat in the next 3 sets 6-3 6-4 6-3.

#11 Miyushira wasn't so lucky. Although he managed to earn two sets 6-3 6-3 after losing 4-6 to Kaze's #15 Qatilko, he lost the remaning two sets 2-6 4-6. It was a hard fight though.

As for the women, #9 Brookes hammered Cockbill's #13 Hammar well and easy in straight sete 6-1 6-2. There was no way Hammar could have taken any chances to defeat our girl.

As for #16 Maydelein, she lost straight sets to Kaze's #11 Kulmiye 3-6 2-6. So we lost to Kaze Progressa in both sides. Disappointing, I guess.

Ts'khinvali open results

The Ts'khinvali open in South Ossetia has begun and our four players from Jeruselem have bravely gone where no Jeruselem tennis player had gone before. We have two male and female players with virtually no hope of winning, but the experience is needed.

The results? Well, the men didn't win a game. Both J. Arat (Group A) and B. Lichen (Group B) lost in 4 sets but both did manage to win a set.

The women were much better. Sady Shouta lost 6-7 7-6 7-6 in a game worth watching She played well but lost the deciding tiebreaker. Well done Sady! Sady is in Group C.

Mary Magaline won in 3 sets to post the team's first ever open tennis win. Mary whose skirts wow the crowds showed she can play tennis and this teen is the best Jeruselem prospect so far. Mary plays in Group A. Score was M. Magaline bt. H. von Oben (3-6, 7-5, 6-1)

Why is this so short, we have only so much space in the Jeruselem Government News sports area with the other part covering soccer. The boss said images of chics in short skirts will be allowed next edition.

Oppt family plays well, Verhofstadt still needs to work on those tiebreaks and Fayrinen loses without a chance.

Catherine Oppt managed a 3-set victory against Angelika Christoforaki, hardfought, but truely earned.

Burt Oppt performed at least as good as his wife, but unfortunately he had to give in to Quaza Qatilko in five grueling sets. In the same group, Benno Fayrinen lost too, he had no chance against the hard serves of Harald Beerquaffer who takes over the lead in the group from Burt.

The standings in their group:

Zulma Verhofstadt had a few great moments in the first set but was unfortunately to lose it in a tie-break. After that she wasn't able to stand up to the powerful game of Maricela Kimberlin and lost the second set 6-4.

Oct 1985 - Ts’khinvali, South Osettia - Louis Lee is off to a 2-0 start in the Ts'khinvali Open, the second international tennis tournament of the NSTA. Lee, ranked 23rd in the world, beat #22 Bobby Frete of Hisam in three straight sets, vaulting him up in the points rankings.

Julio Arzu, the highest ranking tennis player in Adam Island at #10, dropped his first game against Harald Beerquaffer of Cockbill Street. Both of the womens' competitors (the tournament is divided into seperate sections for males and females due to outdated cultural bias in the hosting nations) have split their matches, 1-1.

"Are we on air?" Julia looked to her producer.
"Yes, now, go!"

Guten abend, this is Julia Kaltenbrunner reporting from the Ts'khinvali open in tennis. Unfortunately both of our top male players suffered injuries just before the tournament started, and therefore couldn't join. But, we have followed our two women players instead.
Theresia Mehlinger, our number one ranked women player, and also first seeded player in this tournament, lost yesterday, against Fräulein Brooks. Theresia will be with us shortly for an interview.
Our youth player, Hanna von Oben, participating for the first time in a non-youth tournament have been playing well, but sofar havent won a match. But we keep our fingers crossed for you!
Ah, I've been told that Theresia waits just outside our studio. So we'll be back after these messages"

3 minutes of irritation commercials later

"Guten abend Theresia. And welcome."
"Danke"
"For the first time, you're first seeded in a tournament. How does that feel?"
"Well, I have always said that I'll be number one, and now I'm here. So, it's more or less expected."
"Uhm, ok.... But, you lost yesterday against Brooks. Why did you loose the game?"
"Didn't you see it? The umpires were hopeless. He was clearly in favour of Brooks. It wouldn't surprise me if Brooks had payed off the umpire, or the umpire had been betting on Brooks to win."
"So... You blame the whole thing on the umpire?"
"Yes! I played better, served harder, ran faster than that Brooks. If it hadn't been for the umpire I would have won the match easily!"
"But, we who saw the game all agree that Brooks played a marvelous tennis from time to time, and that you didn't seem prepared for that? Isn't the real reason that you underestimated your opponent? Isn't so, that she was much better than you thought?"
"Hell no!" Theresia screamed "I am the best player here! She was NOT better than me! It was the umpire's fault I tell you"
Theresia walked out of the room, looking very angry.

"Ok people, let's hope Theresia can calm down a bit for the next match. That was all from us, here at the Ts'khinvali open. See you next time!"

Mary shows the way while compatriots struggle

More results from the Ts'Khinvali Open and Jeruselem is suffering from lack of internatonal experience is expected. The two male players lost again but this is not unexpected as they are facing real pros who can meet the challenge.

Mary Magaline once again won in a tough three setter while Sady Shouta lost in straight sets. We don't know much about this teen Mary, but she's the future of Jeruselem tennis. With the name from the bible and hot looks, Mary is a popular girl. She has shown true strength with an epic win today against an experience opponent.

Sady showed fight but M. Kaperonis too good on the day. Arat and Lichen aren't total amateurs but the competition has been too good for them so far.

While the tournament suffered a slight delay because of a sudden flu outburst in the referees' locker room, the players kept practising to keep up the form. Ofcourse, as far away from the refs as possible.

The smart delays didn't do any of the Sjwitz players any good though, all 4 lost and with only two matches to go in the first round they'll have to start showing their finest backhands, forehands, dropshots and volleys spiced up with a few aces.

Coach Ghregor Smitt (Benno's Coach): "I think it's the pressure getting to them, all 4 are really not getting into the rhythm. Well, I told Benno he's here to learn and that he has nothing to lose, I can't do more really, he's got what it takes, but it's just not working for the moment."

Euroslav Women Continue to Succeed!

After the third day of tennis, Sarah Greyson fell for the first time in the Competition, however, she still remains in a comfortable 3rd place. After an interview with Sarah, she described her 3rd match against Fowsiya Kulmiye as "One of the best matches of her life." Despite the fact that she lost, she felt that she played a good game, and is looking forward to continuing to prove herself to the rest of the women out there.

The suprise of the tournament, Rebecca Storm, defeated her 3rd opponent, and remains at the top of her group, undefeated. No one expected this young tennis star to do nearly as well as she has been competing. In an interview with her, she stated that, "I worked as hard as I could to get where I am today, and I really want to thank all of the ladies out there right now. They are all working as hard as they possibly can, and they deserve everything that they can accomplish. They are definitely role models that I will continue to look up to. I can only hope that I can stay at the top of my game, so that I can make my country proud. Olga Waqasie is certainly the one woman that I need to prepare myself for. I've heard nothing but good things about her, and am very excited about going up against her. I have so much respect for her."

Fmjphoenix's tennis players providing good competition

In a suprise for Fmjphoenix sports enthusiasts, the top three tennis players of Fmjphoenix have been doing quite well in the Ts'khinvali Open being held in regional neighbor South Osettia. Ashton Skruid and Paul Decrovia have found themselves competting against each other in the same group and have both won 2 matches while Anya Kruchina is competing against some very tough women and has won her last series.

Ashton Skruid and Paul Decrovia played each other on the first day with Skruid getting the better in three sets. Kruchina had a harder time, losing in four sets on the first day. The next day showed Skruid hitting a skid and Decrovia playing better with Skruid losing in 4 sets while Decrovia won in 4. Kruchina again struggled with the fierce competition in her group losing in two sets. Day three proved to be better for Fmjphoenix's entrants, as all three won their series, Skruid and Decrovia in 5 and Kruchina in 3. Onlookers in Fmjphoenix are anxious to see how they will fare in the rest of the tournament.

sorry for bad rp, i dont know much about tennis, but i am going to try something else out after todays scores

Sjwitz

From the Sports section of the Daily NewSjwitz:

Keeping the best for last?

On the fourth day of the Ts'khinvali Open all four of the Sjwitz players managed to bring out their best shots so far. Burt Oppt was an ace-machine, Benno Fayrinen found back is good pair of legs and was running all over the place, Catherine J. Oppt fiercely battled Fmjphoenix's Anya Kruchina and Zulma Verhofstadt was as sexy as ever and managed to get her first point.

With one match to go things don't look so good, but except for Benno there is still a possibility of proceeding to the next round. In Burt and Benno's group, Burt is up for a tough match against Harald Beerquaffer and needs a win to even have a chance to proceed to the next round. A lot will depend on Benno, if he can win against Kenny Miyushira then Burt will proceed. Hopefully Benno can win, not just because of Burt, but to save the honour and get his first victory.

The standings in Burt and Benno's Group:
Group C -- GP - 3SW - 4SW - 5SW - L - Pts - SF - SA - SD - GF - GA - GD

1. Harald Beerquaffer 4 2 1 0 1 8 11 4 +7 78 67 +11
2. Julio Arzu 4 1 1 0 2 5 9 7 +2 82 74 +8
3. Quaza Qatilko 4 0 0 4 0 4 12 8 +4 101 86 +15
4. Burt Oppt 4 0 1 1 2 3 8 9 -1 81 81 +0
5. Kenny Miyushira 4 1 0 0 3 3 5 9 -4 63 74 -11
6. Benno Fayrinen 4 0 0 0 4 0 4 12 -8 66 89 -23

Catherine J. Oppt is in fifth place and thus will need to go up at least one spot to proceed in the tournament, with a victory against Halima Jurme that will surely happen, knowing that Catherine and Halima have the same amount of points. All or nothing for Catherine.

Standings in Catherine's Group:
Group B -- GP - 2SW - 3SW - L - Pts - SF - SA - SD - GF - GA - GD

1. Olga Waqasie 4 2 1 1 5 7 3 +4 51 34 +17
2. Rebecca Storm 4 1 2 1 4 6 4 +2 45 44 +1

4. Angelika Christoforaki 4 1 0 3 2 5 6 -1 50 58 -8
5. Catherine J. Oppt 4 0 2 2 2 5 6 -1 44 53 -9
6. Anya Kruchina 4 0 1 3 1 4 7 -3 50 59 -9

Zulma Verhofstadt, who has been gaining fans throughout the tournament, and definitely not because of the (low) quality of her matches, has a very difficult task on her hands if she wants to proceed to the round of 16. She needs a victory, preferably in two sets, against group leader Fowsiya Kulmiye who has so far only dropped one set in the whole tournament. A three set win can get her a ticket in the next round, but then Daphne Maydelein and Sarah Greyson both have to lose their matches. She can only hope that Fowsiya will take it easy knowing that she's already qualified for the next round.

Standings in Zulma's Group:
Group D -- GP - 2SW - 3SW - L - Pts - SF - SA - SD - GF - GA - GD

1. Fowsiya Kulmiye 3 3 1 0 7 8 1 +7 51 28 +23
2. Casee Bajazan 3 1 1 2 3 6 5 +1 56 51 +5
3. Maricela Kimberlin 3 1 1 2 3 4 5 -1 46 50 -4
4. Daphne Maydelein 3 1 0 3 2 4 6 -2 46 53 -7
5. Sarah Greyson 3 0 2 2 2 4 6 -2 45 52 -7
6. Zulma Verhofstadt 3 0 1 3 1 4 7 -3 50 60 -10

Hopefully they've all kept the best for last, Sjwitz can have up to three players in the next round, but the chance that not even one proceeds exists also.

Gutan abend. This is Julia Kaltenbrunner, from the Ts'khinvali open. Yesterday our two tennis players, Mehlinger and von Oben met in a thrilling match. As expected Mehlinger won, but von Oben did put up with a stiff resistance, winning the second set with 6 - 3.
Von Oben said after the match that she's very happy with the performance she have performed here in this tournament. And we all have to remember that this IS the first senior tournament for this 15 - year old, who many experts think will be a future star.
Mehlinger, who is seeded as Number 1 in this tournament, said after the match that she thought von Oben played well, but that she will win the tournament. That we'll have to see, but I for one, is going to cheer her on in the future matches.

Today a busload of supporters from Nieder Ostland came here, a bit late perhaps, to support our players. Hopefully our players will benefit from the supporters here. Thisi is Julia Kaltenbrunner, supporting our players in the Ts'khvili open. Bqck to the studio.....

OOC: Uhm, have an idea. Wouldn't it be kinda smart to have a ranking thread, where the rankings after each tournament is posted? This would make it kinda easier to seed players etc when ya create your own tournament.

Mary's Tennis News

If you're been reading the soccer news the Jeruselem U21's losing in the second round and Jeruselem World Cup team getting a draw, here's the place for reading about wins.

Good results for Match day 3 and 4 in the Ts'khinvali open.

Arat lost both games but he's been suffering from a bad knee for a while. It helps if you have mobility in tennis. He really needs a rest to recover but maybe it might happen after the Open.

Lichen's losing streak turned into a two game winning streak. He won a 5 setter then a 4 setter. The early losses seems to have spurred him on to get the wins required or maybe he's got now the better match fitness.

Mary lost her first game but won the next game for a 3-1 record. The recent win was a great straight sets wins after being dumped in straight sets before. She's looking good to progress.

Poor Sady Shouta. After being thrashed on day 3, she pushed her opponent to 3 sets in the next one but still lost. A break of serve in the 3rd was the end and her opponent served the game out.

Ts'khinvali open results

Match day 5 for the Ts'khinvali open and it was mostly a disaster. Arat, Lichen and Magaline all lost their games although Mary lost a very close one. Sady Shouta finally won something, but it was too late to make the 2nd round. Everyone except Mary came last (6th) in their group so they can pack their bags and go home. Mary Magaline finished 3th in Group A so she's fighting on.

The only game of interest left is Kulmiye (HRA) vs. Magaline (JEW) which is the knockout rounds now. All in all, Mary won 3 games while Lichen 2 and Sady 1. While the results maybe disappointing, our young tennis players will be back again to improve.

Paul Decrovia wins, moves to quarter finals

Out of three of the entrants that Fmjphoenix sent to compete in this tournament in South Osettia, only one still remains. Decrovia still lives on to play another day with his victory over Gregor to move on to the quarter-finals.

Winning three sets to the scores of 6-4, 6-3, 6-4. With the win, he moved on to the next round. Paul was looking for a rematch against fellow national competitor Austin Skruid, but he lost against McGrath, so now he must try and earn revenge for his friend and competitor in the next round.

Once again Mehlinger manages to win a game, this time fairly easy, as she beat Kulmiye with 6-3, 6-1.
This means that she will in the next match face Marina Kaperonis, who lost in the second round in the Red Dot open. This is a match that Mehlinger should win.
All over Nieder Ostland, people are following Mehlingers progress in the Ts'khinvali open. And this next match is probably gonna be followed by millions of people back home, and the near five hundred supporters that have come here to cheer her on. We all keep our fingers crossed that Mehlinger will once again show her quallities.

Streetian Tennis Players Make It To Quarters
Still - An Improvement

After the somewhat dismal Red Dot Open, three Streetian players - Callum McGrath, Harald Beerquaffer and Sara Zettergren - have shown their potential at the 24-player Ts'khinvali Open by beating many higher-ranked opponents. Particularly impressive was the fighting spirit showed by McGrath when Fmjphoenix's Skruid had taken the third set 6-3 and led 2-1 in sets - McGrath served his way home with aces all along and also forced his opponent into errors, taking the fourth set 6-3 and the fifth by an impressive six games to one. He was joined in the quarter-final by Harald Beerquaffer, who nearly threw away a 7-6 6-2 advantage through some very poor serving, but managed to take the fifth set by a relatively comfortable 6-2.

In the quarter-finals, the Streetians showed themselves to be lacking in the physical qualities required at this high level of tennis, though. Callum McGrath was up against Fmjphoenix' Paul Decrovia, after being this nation's Austin Skruid in the second round, and despite taking the first two sets 6-3 6-2, his game became successively more error-strewn. In the third set's tie-break, McGrath began well to 2-2, but then double faulted crucially, handing the serve over to Decrovia on 2-3. Decrovia served home an ace before going forward to the net on the next ball, smashing him down the baseline, and with 5-2, there was little relief to be had for McGrath, who gave up quickly and lost 3-7 in the tie-break. That was the pivotal point - McGrath never held his serve from that point onwards, Decrovia returning exceedingly well, and didn't have the stamina required to run and take the breaks, ending up losing 3-6 4-6. More training is required before the Roegrow Open, which is rumoured to start in about a week and a half, pending confirmation from the NSTA.

Sara Zettergren also had her chance in the women's tournament, coming back from losing 5-7 in the first set to Progressan Harbiali to take the second 6-3. Again, however, the long matches she had participated in drained her strength, and she lost the two-hour marathon in a gruelling third set under the South Ossetian sun. The only Streetian who didn't take the match to a deciding set was Harald Beerquaffer, who lost to Korinthos' Manolakis in four sets - two of which he lost by the unfortunate scoreline 7-5.

Subject: Ts'kinvali Open Finals

It has been a long tournament but it has been worth it. Our last man standing is Daniel Kleston and he's up against Gradi Jarenko at his home ground. I'm sure this would be a phenominal match.

Kelston defeat against Paul Decrovia from Fmjphoenix was a long game but we triumphed. At first, Daniel didn't play so good, it was like he was in another world and lost 2-6, but he did give some excellent aces. But then, he got 2 sets on Decrovia and won them both 6-2. He was supposed to win the last set, as he was winning 4-2, but suddenly, as if Paul was a miracle worker, he earned the next set, and the next, and before we knew it, Daniel lost 4-6, but I don't think he let it demoralise him, he trounced back another 6-2 and won the match. Thank goodness. It would be shame if Daniel had lost at this point.

What a wonderful tennis week this have been. Our hope, Theresia Mehlinger, managed to win the semi final against Kaperonis. But those of you who thought it would be an easy match for Mehlinger was very wrong indeed. Kaperonis put up a fierce resistance agaibst the hard hitting Mehlinger, and only after a Tie break did she manage to win the first set. The second set went to Kaperonis, who won 6 games to 4.
In the last set Mehlinger managed to break Kaperonis serve early in the set, and kept her own serve to win by 6 - 3.
Mehlinger will now face the home player, Olga Waqasie, in the final match. Olga who also had a long 3 set match in the semi finals did look a bit tired after the match was won. This means both of the players will have to rest and relax alot to be fit for fght for the final match is played.
This is a dream final for the people in charge of tghe tournament. Not only did the only home player go all the way to the final, this is also a match between the first and second seeded in the tournament.
Theresia are just ahead of Olga in the rankings, but Olga will probably have some help from the supporters, that, without any doubt, will gather here tomorrow for the final match.
We, of course, hope that Mehlinger will win this match, but it's gonna be a tough fight. All we can do is to sit back and enjoy the match.

Today's Results

Men's Tournament

Jarenko (SOT) bt. Kleston (ORD) (6-4, 6-3, 5-7, 6-3)

Women's Tournament

Mehlinger (NOS) bt. Waqasie (SOT) (6-2, 6-4)

Due to adverse weather conditions, the final was delayed for five days, and tennis fans condemned to Star Trek repeats.

And so, with the tournament over, and the last bottle of champagne poured over somebody else's head, there's nothing left to do but find out how the rankings now stand...ORD?

Thanks for that ORD - the Wiki looks good too. I would very much like to be a part of the NSTA, and hope that current members would do me the honour.

And so the Ts'khinvali Open comes to a close. Who knows what the next tournament might be, but when it comes round, expect us to be there and reayd to pick up another trophy.

Unless anyone else steps up to host a tennis tournament (KP? LE?), sign-ups for the Roegrow Open will begin in three days. Again, the players from the nations who have RPed in this thread will be automatically entered.

Thanks, all four Sjwitz players accept the wildcard and will try to be in great shape for the Roegrow Open next week.

Unless ofcourse, as stated, if any other tournament will be organised first, then their priorities will go that way.
