World Cup Introduction:

For more information on the World Cup, it's History, how it works, who runs it, and the competitions related to it, check out the World Cup Wiki Site (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup)

The NSWC is a tournament for any NS nation who signs up. This World Cup is about to Start its 19th competition. Every team is given a rank based on their performances in previous Cups, and the starting rank is 150 (the Current 'best team in the world' is Rejistania, with a rank of 1) See::KPB Rankings (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/KPB_ranking_system)

Scores are generated using either a Java program or through various or MS Excel sheet 'scorinators' which use random numbers, weighted by ranking and RP bonus to produce the scores.

It is encouraged for Nations to RP - roleplay - their matches, team rosters, players and such. Good RPs will help raise your chance of winning (especially in the Baptism of Fire and Colony Cup). Please note: A lot of RPs does not guarantee goals or wins, but your chances are improved or this happening. i.e. Two debutant, Rank 150, nations play each other. One has RP'd a few times, the other has not. The nation who has participated should have the better probability of victory, but still has a chance of a Win, Loss or Draw.

RPs can be Team Roster announcements, fan comments, press conferences, media stories, anything about the game, as long as you've kept to the score as posted or TGd to you by the host/scorer.

BFA president Johnny Lewis reviews the application on his desk. "Eh? What's all this about?"

"Signups for the Twenty-First World Cup, sir," his assistant points out helpfully.

"But the Twentieth hasn't even started yet! Well, the qualifiers have, but that doesn't count."

"Um, this isn't coming any earlier than usual, sir. You know they have to start this early if they want to get eighty or more nations to sign up."

"Eighty? Eh, back in my day, we had sixty-four nations in a Cup. Ya hear that, sixty-four! 'Course, that was back in the dark ages when I was still playing."

"So, are we signing up or not?"

"Just give me time, I've got to be able to read the damn thing!" Lewis scans the form. "Ah, to hell with it, I'm too old to read it. You'd think I'd know it all, this being our nation's seventeenth Cup...all right, where do I sign?"

"Right there, sir."

Lewis puts his pen to the paper and signs it -- sort of. His hand shakes so much that it could just as well say "Peter Hancock" as "Johnny Lewis". At any rate, the signature does make it official that Bedistan will have another go in World Cup 21.

Fresh from the rigours of the Kevolution, which saw the cancellation of the final third of their last domestic season, the heroes of the Gibberovian FA have made the brave decision to mark the new era in the nation's history by stepping up to the plate for the next World Cup competition.

The team is currently entering training, and the lineup remains a closely guarded secret for the moment.

His Eminence, the Prime Poperoy of Gibberovia is said to fully endorse the team's entry, and has already bought himself a full replica kit and beer fridge with which to enjoy the tournament.

Sonaron
23-01-2005, 04:06
The streets of Izlon were choked with morning commuters. Laborers of every caste slowly made their way to work, navigating the streets of Sonaron's capital city with great care. At the top of one of many skyscrapers that dotted the skyline, a group of important business executives were already meeting.

"Gentlemen, we have a problem." A man in an exquisite business suit stood at the head of the table to address his team. "In large part due to Izlon's recent growth spurt, crime rates are on the rise. My statisticians tell me that the largest increase is among juveniles. We could, of course, petition the government to stem the tide--"

A chorus of boos and catcalls broke out from the table at the mention of the government. Nearly every person in the boardroom lept from their seats, shouting their disapproval of any governmental interference. After a few moments, the CEO managed to regain control.

"Or, we must find some diversion with which we can occupy the populace," he finished, waving for silence. "If we can keep the children busy after schools let out, it should dramatically reduce the crime rates."

The silence in the boardroom was palpable as the businessmen tried to formulate a course of action. Then, one woman in the back of the room stood up. "Yes, Mariza?"

The newest member of the board, Mariza stammered for a moment in nervousness before speaking, "The World Cup is allowing new entries for its upcoming twenty-first tournament. I believe we could have a team ready in time. Most of the schools in Sonaron already have travelling football teams, which should make selecting a national team fairly easy. By backing this team, we should be able to rally the populace around sports in general and football in specific, providing diversions other than a life of crime."

As Mariza sat back down, a murmur of support swept across the boardroom. Soon, one of the older members of the board stood to applaud, lending his support to the proposal. After a few moments, the entire boardroom left its seat, approving the proposal by acclimation. The CEO motioned to one of his secretaries, who hurried to make the necessary signs. Soon, a fervor would sweep the streets of Izlon.

Owner Stanly Brisbow: “Richard, are the Dragons ready for competition.”

Owner Stanly Brisbow: Well good no one expects us to win but I believe that we have one of the best teams in there. We have young talent with lots of heart. Coach Richard, you better do your very best. I believe in you and you abilities. Good luck!

Coach Richard Toledo: Thank you sir, I will.
Flashback…

Coach Toledo stands on the sidelines of the soccer field watching his team practicing and doing drills. Kicking the ball in to the net, passing it and doing laps of the field. The goaltender stands there blocking kick after kick. They are all drenched in rain the only thing keeping them going is there heart and there chance to play in the 21st World Cup. They want to represent there country to the fullest of their ability. After a few hours of practice they come together as they did after every practice, to remind themselves why they are there. They’ve practiced in all kind of conditions on all kind of fields. Coach Stands there watching on, he feels proud and he knows somewhere in his heart that they are the best.

Back to reality…

Coach Toledo: (Whispers as he walks out of the owner’s office) “We’re Ready Alright”

OOC: As my excuse for my computer breaking down, combined with winter break keeping me away from NS for the first half of WC XX, I created a Great Storm, including a mysterious storm cloud covering most of Legalese to this day (in NS-sense, that is). For this announcement, I'm removing the storm cloud, which was disappearing, as of my last RP for the cup. Anyways,

IC:

As the storm cloud finally faded, the residents of Francis Town could finally see parts of their thought missing nation. The storm, which had ravaged parts of Legalese for over two years, was finally over.

Oddly, as rescue crews traveled from Francis Town, heading to help those who may still be alive in the heart of the storm, were shocked by the response they recieved: fire trucks and rescue vehicles racing towards Francis Town!

As one passed, Francis Town Station Chief Herb Match signalled for it to stop. He got out and approached the driver, spotting the "Gavelton EMT" logo on the side of the vehicle. "Is everything alright in Gavelton?" said Herb. "We are amazed to see you guys."

"Is everything alright in Francis Town?" was the reply. "We are just as amazed to see y'all. We thought that storm cloud would never stop covering you."

Herb scratched his head. "What do you mean? We've been fine in Francis Town- we thought the rest of Legalese was destroyed."

Over the next few weeks, confusion reigned, as the two parts of Legalese debated over who was ravaged by the storm. The answer, however, seems to be none of the above.

Two weeks later, a meeting was held in the Legalese Soccer House in Francis Town. Present were not only the diminished staff of the LAFC (consisting of MNT Manager Robbie Heard, Reserves Manager Jim Norbert, and a few staffers), but were the members of the Soccer Legalese. It seems that after Francis Town appeared to be all lost to the rest of the nation, the local clubs joined together to create a new organization, which had been in the progress of re-establishing the Men's National Team, a feat no longer necessary.

"Robbie, it's good to see you and the team again", said Arthur Schram, Chairman of Soccer Legalese. "Now, we need to put on a huge event to show ourselves to the soccer world once again. You know, something that will announce Legalese as here to stay, now that we've been doing the soccer thing for three cups. I'm thinking of a world club championships of some sort..."

"Uh, sirs?" came the interruption from Annie, one of the interns for the LAFC. "There may be another option. We just received a telegram from the nation of Raptor Claw today. You may want to see it."

Arthur accepted the telegram, giving it a look-over. At first, his jaw dropped at the enormity of the proposed task. Then a gleam shone in his eyes, as he could see it unfolding right before him: the greatest international competition of them all, here in Legalese! He turned to Robbie, who was ready to offer Soccer Legalese control of the LAFC, with Schram to be the new Executive Director.

"Hey Robbie," said Arthur, "care if we host the next World Cup?"

OOC: Legalese and Raptor Claw announce their bid for hosting World Cup XXI. Expect a bid thread to be up sometime today, maybe during a more civilized hour ;)

In a Corporate office in the United States of Allanea

“So, what do you suggest? You suggest the company should start a sports team? What the hell does that have to do with anything?”

“It will be good PR for us abroad, Mr. Nivensky.” – Started the Public Relations Executive. – “Also, some minor money will be made by us…”

Nivensky interrupted him. “No need for this, Nigel. I agree. Let’s set us up a sports team – soccer, in fact. And sign us up for Baptism of Fire, too.”

Somewhere else completely

George Luvande was a towering monster of a man. Six and a half feet of bulging arteries, war tatoos, huge muscles and a golden scientologist’s cross (http://www.scientology-harare.org/img/Cross.jpg) hangin over a white tank top, he was absolutely intimidating.

He was one of Allanea’s best soccer players. While team sports where not very popular in the country – Allanea being a nation of individualists – they did exist, right along with bestiality and Satanism. He never complained about the lack of funds – he liked it too much. But when George Luvande [Sgt, Retired, USMC], got this call from Allanean Arms, Inc., he was shocked.

- Sergeant Luvande?
- Speaking.
- This is Allanean Arms, Inc. We decided to hire you as captain.
- Captain of what?
- The Allanean National Soccer Team.

He fell silent for a moment.

- Sergeant Luvande? Are you there, Sergeant? We were about to tell you you would be paid five hundred thousand Allanean Dollars…

Another silence, as Luvande stood there motionlessly, with his other hand on his cross. Then he replied, with sudden calmness in his voice:

- I accept.

Totally Useless Liars would (not?) like to sign up for the Baptism of Fire tournament, depending on:

a) whether or not the hosts accept it into the finals, as it is a puppet a long way down the list of signed up puppets.

b) if it makes the numbers any easier to manage.

c) if it hasn't only gone and started yet without us knowing.

Some of the host candidates have set an absolute limit of 82 teams in the Cup. As 84 are signed up at present, that means TUL could be excluded - and if they are, Druida doesn't want them to participate in the BoF, either.

One last bump!

With the Baptism of Fire imminent, it is best to close sign-ups as soon as possible (this to avoid people entering with a rank of 150 just to fill up - and then going Ravea-like 0-0-14). So everyone who wants in - do it NOW, as sign-up will be closed tomorrow at this time by your friendly host :)

Sign-ups closed!

84 nations will be in qualifying, that's 12 groups of 7 (most likely - although 15 groups of 6/5 is a possibility). Nations that cease before the World Cup starts (we'll come back to that - probably in a week and a bit, though) will not be replaced.

The Baptism of Fire tournament may now begin, and I suppose we'll need a new sign-up thread for World Cup 22.
