Do we even have armies? I've never seen any data on that.

NationStates doesn't actually simulate your military; the simulation isn't that deep. Many details, such as the size of an army, are handled only in player-defined freeform roleplay. That is, when writing stories and playing "make-believe".

Most people use a percentage to figure out it out. Some try to use 5%, though many argue thats very high. You need to factor in that not everyone in military is a soldier/pilot. A lot of people use 2.5% of the nation total, I personally use 1%, which still yields me over 34 million people.

Also depends on wartime/peacetime, what kind of nation you are (having a time of service mandatory or not)

If you actually bother to go through an accurate accounting, even 2.5% is high.

Of courseso many players completely ignore reality, which is why a significant number of potentially good RPers end up in general...

Your military stats depend on what forum you roleplay in. The Nationstates forum is far stricter on numbers (I don’t know why?) and rarely allows a military beyond 2.5%. International Incidents is a little more lax, with a maximum military of 5%, and the general forum, well they do whatever they want.

Roleplay quality does not necessarily go down with each forum you choose to exist in, however the superior writing is in Nationstates, with Internationals Incidents following, though there are some excellent Roleplayers in International Incidents, good writing does not often mean a good role-player. General, is a complete jumble of material, funny to go into if you want some controversy.
