Liverpool England get surprise 'bye'

The national ice-hockey team has been surprised with news that they have received a first-round bye as CC7 runners up to make way for Wella to enter the competition. While the players were unavailable for comment, coach Srvanic Cecha noted that it would be easier for the players to become complacent. "I've decided to make the players play a few friendly games against Iansisle, if they'd oblige."

The FIHF (Frozchevan ice hockey federation) has just announced the starting line up for it's new look team. The line up are as follows:

Ivan Gorchev (NM)
Dmitri Pudjov
Misha Domodov
Nicky Chinnski
Sergei Molotov
Boris Zhinskoya

Unfortunately Hamilton Fletcher's citizenship did not come through in time, so he will be unable to participate in this Chery cup. The rest of the squad are looking fit and strong, and Frozcheva look forward to a successful first run in the Cherry cup.

In other national team news: The new sponsors of the national team, Fizzpop, have just announced a 700,000 froznik youth hockey scheme.

An entirely Dwarven team will line up for Starblaydia, just because we feel like it, being that the humans never lived up to their randomness that took them to a Cherry Cup 5 Win. We don't expect them to do very well, but that's Dwarves for you.
The Gulf States
08-01-2005, 15:54
The Gulf States SeaWolves comes back for another reason of ice hockey action. After that embarassment known as Cherry Cup 7, where the SeaWolves got bounced in the Round of 16 - there were plenty of shakeups.

The SeaWolves rode on the older team too long. All-Stars that had played on several Cherry Cups before hand, finishing in the semis a few times. Now the team has quite a lot of younger blood on the roster, and they are as eager as ever to make an apperance in the Cherry Cup's finals.

The coach of Fimble loving peoples team has just been appointed this morning and has hastily put together a squad from the nations top professional teams.

20. J. Fordalis - Chosen because he let in less goals than any other keeper.
29. M. Michaels - Picked because he is the only decent player the league for his position who is a citzen of Fimble loving peoples.
12. N. Sly - The highest paid player bought his way into the team.
6. S. Friar - Boosted to the team through her ability when confronted.
3. A. Zoretsky - Star player. Received a place after gaining citizenship 4 days ago.
17. C. Cripson - Heavily sponsored pretty boy with some fine technical shots.

Starting Forwards Freeman, Petchukov and Grond are among the finest in the world, and have played together since Cherry Cup 6. Grevnik is still an up a coming goalie, and will occasionally give up a soft goal, but his focus improves daily. The defense, while lacking any one superstar, is solid, with everyone pulling their weight. On the lower lines, 6'7" 268 lb Ulf Ganger is an imposing force on both sides of the ice. Along with fellow checkers Gunther Hiemel, Harris O'Donnel and new defenseman Jakob Newman, he'll give opposing shooters something to think about.

"Coach Haztarr, Coach Haztarr," the female reporter called after the Dwarven coach, "a few quick questions, please?"

"Aye, Missey, I'll answer ye questions." he replied from somewhere around her waist.

"Coach Haztarr, can you give us the rest of your team line-up?"

"What d'ye be wantin' that fur?" he eyed her with a strange look. Perfectly normal for him, but a strange look nonetheless.

"The Ferrets' Manager was mocking the fact you only released a six-man roster."

"He did?" Haztarr lost his temper then, "I'll kall'im! The dirty great Squornshellan won'tae know whats hit'im!"

"But..."

"Just because we're t'Dwarves donnae make us inferior!" Haztarr yelled and stomped around the corridor. "A'll crush'is team wie t'bacca mae 'and...!"

At this point, its probably best left for us to interpret his words through the medium of lip-reading. Though if there are any Dwarfish-speaking views watching we apologise for the cursing. Thankfully, though, Coach Haztarr dropped a piece of paper containing the full Starblaydia roster, with not a non-Dwarf in sight. Rumours abound in Iansisle that this team will be nicknamed the 'Starblaydia Stunties', instead of the usual 'Starblaydia Rayzors'. Not a single human even figured in selection for this team, meaning that such human greats as wing Ragnar Larsson and 'keeper Olaf Goodbrother, who could easily win a game on their own, are left kicking their heels at home.

"It's them humans' fault. The Dwarves are great. Its the damn humans who can't play hockey to save their lives. How we won a Cherry Cup I'll never know, must have been some strange incident involving aliens or time travel or something."
Looks like Coach Haztarr might be justified, then.

Sarzonia

The Sarzonia Blizzards

Coach: Harold Clark

ROSTER (starters in bold):
1 Brian Snow (Portsmouth Pride): At 6'2, 185, not the most agile goalkeeper around. Uses size and positioning to cut down most goalscoring chances. Decent puck handler. 22 years old.
30 Tim Collins (Saugerties Storm): This 27 year old just took up hockey three years ago, so Snow is the more experienced keeper. Is poor at puckhandling. At 5'9, 165, uses the butterfly style and his agility to stop shots.

DEFENSEMEN:
2 Bill Langham (Woodstock Seawolves): Team captain. This 29 year old has the most hockey experience of any Blizzards player. Has the best plus-minus in the history of Woodstock City College (plus-32). Known more for savvy than speed, but he's a very hard hitter.
4 Kevin Dewey (Nicksia Hawks): Known as a great offensive defenseman. Led his amateur league in goals by a defenseman with 12 in 30 games. 25 years old.
10 Brandon Yancey (Portland Pirates): The fastest defender in Sarzonia, he sometimes takes his ability to chase the play from behind for granted and doesn't position well enough for Coach Clark. 23 years old.
12 Ben Johansson (New Isselmere University, New Daurmont): Rugged defenseman known for taking his share of penalties. Has the skill to handle the puck and jump into the attack if needed, but usually is a stay-at-home defenseman. 24 years old.
14 Connor Burleson (Wilmington Whiteheads): The hardest hitting defenseman on the team, most of this 26 year old's checks are clean. Able to deal a bone jarring hip check. Not the best at puckhandling so he's a stay-at-home defenseman.
15 Dave Miller (Portsmouth Pride: Aggressive, attacking defender often skates with the fourth line. Led the team in penalty minutes during the team's exhibition tour through Sarzonia. At 30 years old, he's the oldest player on the team.

FORWARDS:
11 Jeff Cantnell (Woodstock): This left winger has one of the deadliest shots among a left-shooting wing in Sarzonia. He led the Seawolves in goals with 29, six more than his age this year.
16 Marc Coulier (Carthage Crush): Led the team in faceoff win percentage last year (61 percent). Does especially well in clutch faceoffs, so he'll be the first line center. 28 years old.
17 Mike Ridley (Lexington Lasers): The top goal scorer in his amateur league with 28 in 30 games, this 27 year old right winger is the best all-around player Sarzonia has.
19 John Davis (Lexington): Rugged right winger usually defends against the opposing team's top offensive forwards. Is excellent at getting under the skin of some of the greatest players on opposing teams. 22 years old.
20 Kevin Spencer (Galveston College): Can play both center and left wing. Usually decent on face offs, but he's best known for being a tough defensive forward. 29 years old.
22 Albert Cronin (Carthage): Utility forward, can play all three forward positions, but is best at left wing. Improving on defense, but is often sitting on the player's bench in the third period. 25 years old.
23 Steve Becker (Woodstock): For a fourth line center who is among the leaders in penalty minutes, has a deft touch around the goal. If he keeps his hands to himself instead of beating on his opponents, he could be a leading scorer. 24 years old.
24 Kelly Miller (Portland): Arguably the hardest working player in Sarzonia, this 28 year old right winger goes full-tilt on every shift like his family's honor depended on it. His scrappy play has endeared him to his teammates everywhere he's gone. Will dig in the corners and deliver brutal checks on opposing forwards when he has to. The alternate captain.
27 Billy May (Nicksia): Despite his size (5'8, 145 pounds), the toughest fighter on the Sarzonian team. He'll engage anyone anywhere, anytime. Next to no skill with the puck, so when he's on the ice, he's out there to pick a fight. "Plays" left wing. He just turned 26.
32 Casey Matthews (Newcastle University): At 6'3, 205 pounds, he's easily the biggest player on the ice for the Blizzards. Despite his physical presence, this 25 year old has a surprisingly good touch when he plays center, but he's well-known for being ambidextrous. Not very good with faceoffs, however.
36 Harvey Benedict (University of Montgomery): If your enforcer has been given a game misconduct, he'll pick up the slack as a right wing. If you have to use him for anything else, he'll do well with his defensive assignments and distract the opposing defense when he has the puck. Other than that, there's not much else this 29 year old is good for.
44 Casey Russell (Henley State College): The younger brother of Sarzonian football star Darwin Russell, he has the hockey equivalent of his brother's skills, but at 20 years old, it'll be a while before he plays center with the starting unit.

The Directorship of Sports, Games, and Recreation pounded their collective fists into their collective palms.

"Oh, it's on," one was quoted as saying.

"11th? But we're the defending champions."

"No, Iansisle is the defending champions. You just slept through the last Cup. Goof."

"But i remember we won!"

"Nah, that Cup never happened. Or it never happened, according to the Iansisle Punnery and sporting Federation."

"What? Wasn't that Cherry Cup 5?"

"Cherry Cup V, you mean."

"What?"

"Cherry Cup V."

"Nitpicker."

"What? nits are rapidly becoming a thing of the past."

"So what about Cherry Cup Fi- ... I mean, V?"

"According to the good people of Iansisle, it never happened. Starblaydia never won a Cup, and we never finished second. And they scored 12,000 goals and won a war with Kalaallit Nunaat."

"Who?"

"Kalaallit Nunaat. A mythical country that allegedly once played pretty good hockey."

"Like us!"

"No, not like us. We suck."

"No way dude, we're the defending champions."

190. Go to 20.

"After their first game in the cherry cup, the team are feeling confident." said the head coach.

"Who, from your perspective was man of the match?" asked the reporter

"Well i'd say it would have to be Nicky Chinnski. He had never played with the national team in a game before, and hasn't been a citizen long, but he seems to gel well with the others."

"Does it have anything to do with the fact he got a hat-trick?" the reporter smiled

"Well that may have come into the decision a little, but we, in Frozcheva reward hard work, and often, those who work hardest do not score. The great defensemen never get the glory they deserve." The coach replied.

"One more question" the reporter said

"No further questions. I'm off to 'train' with the lads." And with that, the head coach strolled out the press conference.

"We wun t' match!" Coach Haztarr shouted, "Three-Two, yer bastads! Slips, my arse!"

And that was just the press conference. Imagine the sight of a mad, rotund, four-foot high Dwarf with a dark brown beard speckled with white, jumpng up and down in glee and anger in equal turns.

A wrister unleashed by Thorin Nibin and a brace of goals from Honnhirrim brought Starblaydia's new-look Rayzors a win from Group-Favourites Sliponia. Starblaydia failed to slip up against this team in the last Cherry Cup and it appears they've managed to do the same this time, now second on Goal Difference in their Group.

And the Iansisle referees haven't screwed us over, yet! Perhaps its because there are no humans around yelling 'Cherry Cup Five Champions, Baby, Yeah!'. Its just a group of Dwarves, going about their business, getting drunk and silently writing in their team and personal Books of Grudges, storing up conflicts and vengance for years and generations to come.

Rayzors all the way, baby!

Blizzards open up with a draw, 3-3

Despite having a team that has been in place since before Cherry Cup VII and a consistent lineup and offensive system, the Sarzonian national ice hockey team couldn't defeat a hastily assembled outfit from Fimble Loving Peoples and ended up with a 3-3 draw.

Despite earning a standings point to open the Cherry Cup for the first time, the Blizzards' dressing room resembled that of a losing team. The players somberly walked around the room and the team angrily brushed aside reminders that they earned a standings point.

"We needed to beat this team, especially with the tough schedule we have coming up," Clark said. "The fact is, when you don't get standings points when you have a chance to, it bites you in the (behind) later on."

Forward Jeff Cantnell sparked the Blizzards (0-1-0, one point) out of the gate early, scoring two goals in the first 14:29 of the game to give the Blizzards an early 2-0 lead. Cantnell made two dekes that faked out goaltender J. Fordalis on the first one, just 56 seconds after the opening faceoff, then fired a blazing leftie slapshot on the first power play of the game for either side.

Unfortnately for the Blizzards, the team lost momentum when goalie Brian Snow suffered a slight concussion after getting hit from behind while trying to clear the puck. The team was forced to send Tim Collins in to replace Snow with 12:39 remaining in the second period and team captain Bill Langham was taken off the ice because he was the third string goalkeeper.

The Blizzards will try to call up goalie Ben Knight, a 21 year old who just graduated from Woodstock City College, to be the backup to Collins if Snow can't play. But the team's immediate concerns rested with Snow.

"Snowie took a nasty hit there," Langham said. "We've got to do a better job of protecting our goalie out there. We only have two."

The team also needs to do a better job of covering for its goalies. FLP scored almost immediately after the goalie substitution and went into the dressing room with a 3-2 lead. Clark couldn't replace Collins because Langham hadn't played goalie since junior hockey, so he exhorted the team to play tighter defense.

It must have worked. The FLC team launched 29 shots on goal in the first two periods, but had only six in the third period, and forward Mike Ridley scored the tying goal with just 18.6 seconds left in regulation to salvage the tie. The Blizzards will face third ranked Squornshelous in a game that Clark is calling a "must win.

"We've got a huge game coming up and we've got our backup goalie in there. You saw what happened last time when we got buried in the standings."

Backup starts off right for Blizzards

So much for the expected happening in this Cherry Cup.

After a disappointing road tie against Fimble Loving Peoples, the Sarzonian national team wasn't expected to put up much of a fight against sixth ranked and second seeded Squornshelous in a road tilt that was the second of three to begin Cherry Cup qualifying. But the Blizzards put together a great offensive and defensive gameplan and goalie Tim Collins picked up his first win as a starter to lead the Blizzards to a 5-2 upset win.

Coach Harold Clark addressed the team before the game began and exhorted them to tighten up their defense and play their brand of hockey. He told the team they had a chance to win the game, but he never imagined the team would dominate the game the way they did.

"That effort you saw out there is a testament to the character this team has," a hoarse Clark said after the game. He was still drenched with ice water the team poured on him to celebrate the win. "The only ones who believed in us were in that dressing room."

Forwards Jeff Cantnell and Mike Ridley scored two goals each and defenseman Kevin Dewey added the fifth into an empty net with five seconds left in the third period. The team got more good news when the team's doctors announced that goalie Brian Snow would be available to the team for the team's first home game on Matchday Four.

"We're going to be smart with Snowie," defenseman and captain Bill Langham said. "There's no need to rush him back and risk his health."

"Um, Coach," the Starblaydi journalist leaned over to the Dwarven coach, who was now jumping up and down on his seat, "that's the Frozcheva team. We're watching them in preparation for our next match. Starblaydia have a bye this match, remember?"

"WOT?!"

"Despite our loss, we are still top of the table, and we expect to stay that way" quoted the head coach of the team.

"Due to our high scoring first game we have proven that we can score goals, and believe that if we can only get more shots on goal then we could win this cup"he said optimistically.

"Yes it is still early days, but if we work hard and get good results, then there is nothing we can't achieve."

"The lads did just what I told 'em. That's what."

"And what did you tell them?."

"Are you trying to steal my secrets>, Are you?. Oh no. The enemy is everywhere. Run for your lives!!!."

Communication broke down at this point as the coach placed upon his head a tin foil hat and ran into the training facility.

We're behind... Who?

----------------That's right folks, the Vilita Ice Cats (Sounds like an ice dancing show or something, doesn't it?) are currently 3rd in the table behind... Fimble Loving Peoples. I guess that means they love Fimbles. What is a Fimble? Is a Fimble a Thimble? Is this some reference to a book or funny joke that never reached the shores of Vilita? Ah, but then they must be good at hockey! Well, not really. See they have the same amount of wins as Vilita, and the same amount of draws, which after two games, does not say much. They even have the same goal difference as the as-strong-as-ever Vilitans. They've just physically scored one goal more. Don't worry, when we meet up with these Fimble's, we'll take care of that. The most important thing though will be beating Sarzonia.

Overheard as the Sarzonian Blizzards finished their practice session before tonight's game against group third seed Oliverry and the media left for the day:

Goalie Tim Collins: Hey, Coach!

Coach Howard Clark: Yeah?

Collins: Did you read what the Vilitans are saying?

Clark: No, what?

Collins: They're putting us at the top of their "must beat" list.

Clark: Us? You've got to be kidding me! What about Squornshelous?

Collins: Eh, who knows. They seem to have it in for us for some reason.

Clark: Figures. Damn Vilitans. Never liked 'em. They're one of the top teams in the world and they're worried about us. Little buggers.

Collins: I guess last night's game got noticed a little bit.

Clark: All the same, we've got Oliverry to worry about. It's our third match against these guys. Let's hope that familiarity helps us.

Collins: Let's hope they weren't watching last night's game.

Clark: You know they probably are right now. I wouldn't be surprised if they're still pissed about losing to us 7-2 in the last Cherry Cup.

Collins: Yeah.

Clark: Anyway, I'll see you at the rink. Six p.m. sharp. Don't forget!

Collins: All right coach. Later.

Media was invited to a meeting with the Oliverrian team before the match. Here is a summary of it:

Coach Johnathan Blue: Hi, media guys, hi people in John Deer Arena, today, I invited you to talk with any player or coach you want by asking questions to them.

Media 1: Hi! Johnathan, do you think you played well in the last game?

JB: In some senses, yes, but in another one, no. But we ruled the fighting problem with the guy by scratching it from the team for this game.

Media 2: For any players in there: Do you think you will win against Sarzonia? I mean, you must know them, you beat them at your last game against them 7-2 *the guy's laughing* and you played against them twice before today.

Captain Guy-Jacques Francois: *laughs* yes. But expect some fights tonight against them. We now have a rival in the international level. So, now a word to Sarzonia: Have some fighters on the team or you will have many injured players on the ice. To the referee: Follow national rules for this game, which means don't exclude a player from the game if he fights, just give him a 5 minute penalty.

Media 3: Do you plan to do well in this year's cup?

Coach: Yes. We were Round-of-16ists last cup. We can do better hein team?
*all the team screams "yeahhh!"*

Now, it's time to go see some videos from lasr Sarzonian game. We don't remember all of their last game we saw last night *the team is laughing* so goodbye, see you later for the after-game press conference!

Squornshelous, a favored team coming into this tournament, has been assraped by teams they should have beaten easily. As a result of the poor results, goalkeeper Miroslav Grevnik has been benched in favor of Ilya Ulanov. "Our defense has been playing like sh--." said head coach Tor Kirov. Defenseman Dwight Tikman will alos move up to the starting line, replacing Petr Lang, who will take Tikman's spot on the second line.

"Is he dead?" whispered one.

"Maybe his brain exploded," thought another, who plucked up the courage to nudge his coach, "Coach?"

No response. Coach Haztarr just rocked gently from the poke. The group of Dwarves had seen their Coach go completely mental during the game. Which was nothing new, of course, but he hadn't reverted back to normal. He was just... sitting there.

"We promise we'll play better next match, coach!" one brave Dwarf plucked up the courage to speak, but the response was still silence.

"I won't get any more silly penalties, coach" said another

"And I'll try not to shove opponents through the glass, coach!"

It was to no avail, however, Coach Haztarr just sat there. All the Rayzors could do was just walk out of the dressing room and back to their hotel rooms. What would happen if they lost a second match? I don't think we wanna find out...

Blizzards earn draw, remain unbeaten

In a tightly-contested match befitting the Sarzonian national team's new status as the top rivals for Oliverry, the Blizzards and Oliverry played to a 1-1 draw in Oliverry. The Blizzards (1-0-2, four points) are in second place in Group Three, one point behind newcomers Fimble Loving People and one point ahead of third ranked Vilita.

"We knew going in they were going to play physical hockey, so we went out there to match their brawn," Coach Harold Clark said. "Our offense wasn't as fluid as it was in the early going of the tournament, but we were able to match their aggressiveness."

The teams also nearly matched each other for penalty minutes. The Blizzards set a team record with 97 minutes in penalties, while Oliverry had 108. Three Sarzonians were given game misconducts, including backup goalkeeper Ben Knight. If goalie Tim Collins were injured, Clark said they would have had to rush Brian Snow into pads and onto the ice.

"Bennie's got to learn to keep his cool," defenseman and team captain Bill Langham said. "He nearly put us in a difficult spot with our goalie situation. Luckily Collins didn't get hurt."

Collins also didn't hurt the team. Making his second consecutive start and only the third start of his international career, Collins made 24 saves, including a sprawling effort that robbed forward François Laroche on one of Oliverry's 10 power play opportunities. Their only goal came at 17:36 of the first period during a four on three power play chance. Forward Joel Hatcher, playing due to a penalty on forward Denys de Ladurantaye, put a surprise wrap around past Collins for a 1-0 lead.

"I wasn't going to let that get me down," Collins said. "There was still a lot of hockey game left to go."

Forward Steve Becker, getting increased playing time due to Oliverry's stated intent to play physical hockey, tied the game 1-1 with a breakaway after winning a loose puck in the corner. He faked to his right and fired an off handed shot that tricked in past goalie John Mezzalona at 8:34 into the second period. From there, the game became one of penalties.

"We were fortunate to get out of our three game stretch on the road and we'll be glad to get back to home ice," Clark said. "The Ice Palace is going to be a good place for us to play." The team will face newcomers Nordwind, which is coming off a 2-0 loss to Fimble Loving People and has a record of 0-1-1. Langham warned the team about taking Nordwind for granted.

"We're only in our second Cherry Cup ourselves," Clark said. "We're not good enough to just show up and expect to get two points."

Oliverry finally plays hockey like in the National league!

Yes, today, Oliverry played real old-time rivalry hockey. It really looked like a Perpignant Francais-Letremblay Bleu-Blanc-Rouge game. 3 fights, 108 minutes of penalty, etc. So, we have done a vox pop in the population to know what they thought about that game:

Citizen 1: Great game! Go Oliverry, go kick some a**es!

Citizen 2: Too much contacts. It's an international tournament, not a rivalry

"Frozcheva's national ice hockey team continued their phenomenal run in the Cherry Cup today. They have beaten yet another worthy opponent, and if their current form is continued, would seem to be able to qualify for the play-off stage of the tournament. The replacment for an injured Sergei Molotov, Milos Harchnik, proved his mettle when he took on one of the opposing teams defenders in fisticuffs and came out on top. Their 2-1 win keeps them at the top of group one, and we look forward to further successes from the Cup."

That was what the sports anchor person told the people of Frozcheva that evening. For the unstable nation of Frozcheva, their current success in the Cherry Cup gives the people something to unite them as a nation. Less bloody than a war, and more well reported, this tournament is the perfect way for Frozcheva to come onto the international scene as a socialist force to be reckoned with.

Blizzards enter bye all tied up

Four games into the Sarzonian national ice hockey team's second Cherry Cup appearance, the Blizzards are sitting where few people expected them to be, in second place in Group Three, just two points behind first place Fimble Loving People heading into their bye and ahead of teams like Vilita, Squornshelous, and Oliverry. Any observers would have been delighted with that had they been told beforehand of the result.

Not Harold Clark. The Blizzards' bench boss bemoaned a defense that leaked like a sieve and forced him to send goaltender Ben Knight into the match with his team trailing 4-1. Knight wasn't even on the Blizzards' roster when the Cup began and only joined the team after regular starter Brian Snow suffered a concussion. But he turned aside 17 shots by Nordwind and kept his team in the game.

After defenseman Kevin Dewey opened the scoring for the Blizzards at 2:46 in the first period, the defense which had been a trouble spot during the first match against Fimble Loving People betrayed goalie Tim Collins, who started the match. They allowed 14 shots on goal, but most of those shots were well-timed, difficult shots and the Blizzards were lucky to be down only 4-1. Still, Clark called the team's only time out with 6:38 to go in the second period and sent Knight in for Collins.

"I did it to send a message," Clark said. "The team wasn't playing well on defense and sometimes, changing goalies forces them to adjust." The defense improved marginally afterwards, with only two of the 14 shots Knight faced being moderately hard.

Right winger Mike Ridley scored a hat trick after the time out with his third goal coming with just five seconds left in the game and lifted the Blizzards to a key standings point. It kept the Blizzards unbeaten in four matches and well within striking distance of first place in the group.

"That was such a good feeling," Ridley said of scoring the game tying goal. "One loss wouldn't have killed our chances, but you want to get points when you can."

"What the hell did you do today on the ice?" asked Johnathan Blue to the players when they came back into the locker room. "I mean, you all suck. You, yes, I'm talking to you Guy-Jacques, you are supposedly the best scorer in Oliverrian Hockey League and you missed every damn shot. A chance that Dick Tremblay scored today heh?"

"The guys that are in my line are all tired. You're too much demanding on the team this year" answered Guy-Jacques Francois

"No, nooooo. You're all wrong. Look, we have done it to the Round-of-16 in last cherry cup, and now, you're saying to me that you're not good enough to do it again? No. It's just impossible"
"Look, if you give me all the reigns tonight, I will relax the team. They will be playing much better tomorrow, I assure you!"answered Guy-Jacques.

"What do you plan to do? Heh..." said the coach

"Did you know how we did it to the Round-of-16 last cup? We were doing regularly team activities so the team spirit could do it well. But, now, it's not the case. Some players hate the other one just because the other team eliminated the other one in the OHL. But, come on guys. If we are there, it's to represent one of the greatest nations in the world. We should be proud of it. Everybody in there: Go! Oliverry Go!"said Guy-Jacques Francois

Everybody in the room answered well. Team spirit is at the top right now. The alcool helped as they were going in a bar that night. So the team should be better in the next games

The SeaWolves, under .500 in a hockey tournament?

This could be becoming a little bit of an embarassment to hockey powerhouse The Gulf States... especially it's Canadian territory. After years of success, the SeaWolves are struggling. OK, it's only a 1-2 start. But this is good enough reason to panic for a nation that loves hockey.

Backup Left Winger Scott McPherson was quoted after the most recent game:
"Cherry Cup 8 to us might be what Cherry Cup 5 is to Iansisle. I guess it's our turn to suck it up. Iansisle came to play in a tourney we hosted, did so horribly. They say they got drunk and the entire cup was just a result of a lucid nightmare or a hangover or something. This might be our drunken-induced nightmare, only The Gulf States prohibits alcohol for any reason besides export sales.

"We really don't know how to explain our play. We tried to fix our problems after the bouncing in the round of 16 last year. All new roster, all new gameplan, bunch of radical changes. It's going to take some time to get used to. That and we're in Iansisle, a country that we don't seem to get along with. It's gonna be hard playing for a while, but I think at the end we'll pull through and make a run for the Cup. It's about time for our fans that we brought the Cherry Cup home."

CASSOWARIES SOAR

It's a whole new ball game, a cliche wrapped up in a hackneyed phrase, but this year's Tanah Burung hockeyaniacs are playing a a whole different level. The good lord willing, they'll dig deep, give it 110%*, and keep this streak going.

Yup, the Cassowaries -- champions in the inconsistency department, at least -- are flying high after a dismal performance in Cherry Cup 7, a staggering collapse off their CC6 trophy and runner-up spot in CC5. At 4-0, they are once again the Cinderella Cassowaries of old.

"Well, we were due for a comeback," said left-winger Octavianus, who to the delight of some of the more nobility-crazed Shieldian fans has chosen to go, this tournament, by his full title: The Honourable Viscount Octavianus Great Son of the High Chief da Silva da Cruz Tarantella, the Gracious, Hero of the Workers (third class). There are those who say fan support is the wind beneth these Cassowaries' wings this Cup; others give credit to the new batch of steriods.

Having acknowledged their streak, it is now inevitable that the Cassowaries will lose six straight and miss the playoffs. If so, they have some very palatable hallucinogenics, smuggled in imprinted on old Gordie Howe hockey cards, to console them in their time of need.

Blizzards look to clip 'Ice Cats'

The match between Group Three top seed Vilita and fourth seed Sarzonia wasn't expected to take on the trappings of a rivalry. After all, the Ice Cats were one of the elite teams of the last Cherry Cup and the Blizzards made their international debut. However, Howard Clark and the Blizzards have comments by Vilita calling their game a must-win.

"They're going to come at us as if we were the top seeds overall in this tournament, we know that for a fact," Clark said. "There's no love lost between our countries when we face each other in a sporting venue. You can bet this is going to be intense."

Sarzonia is in a tie for second place in the group with Vilita and Idealistea with goal differential putting the Blizzards ahead. With Vilita defeating Fimble Loving People 2-1, both teams remain within striking of first place in the standings.

The Blizzards will receive a boost with starting goaltender Brian Snow returning to the lineup after a concussion in the opening game of the tournament. Doctors cleared him to begin practice and Clark named him the starter against the Ice Cats.

"He's ready to go. His head's clear and he's itching to get a piece of the Ice Cats," right wing Mike Ridley said. He's also eager to get back on the ice after missing the previous three matches.

"I've been tearing my hair out waiting to get back in," Snow said. "It's going to feel great when the puck drops and I'm in the net."

Some Iansisle hotel room rented out by SeaWolves.

There's a problem with The Gulf States hockey team. It's woes just keep continuing. The SeaWolves are near the bottom of the standings, in danger of not even making the next round, and tied the worst team in the Cup.

Head Coach Bruce McKenzie did one of the strangest things ever after the game against Hiraan. Called the entire team into a small hotel room for a meeting. But even stranger, what was mentioned at the meeting. TGS Canada Broadcasting Co. has obtained a copy of the meeting, which was videotaped. Officials in Lexington and Ottawa quite frankly don't care.

----------------

We go to the scene in the hotel room, the coaches and players all packed in.

McKenzie: Alright, we're in here now? Good. You guys really are pathetic. We're Canadians gaw damn it! We should be owning these ******* at this game. I ought to pull out a leather belt and smack you around till the break of dawn. Maybe you'll score a ******* goal against **** like Hiraan. I don't even know how many games we have left, but we're an embarassment to our country.

Ansonia: Coach.

McKenzie: Shut the hell up. There is no excuse for any of you to be playing so poorly. I'm tired of this ****, and it's going to be my ass on the line. The rate you're going, you won't be playing in the pro leagues. You'll be pulling third line jobs in bottom level leagues in New York and New Jersey. You sure aren't proving to me, to our country, that you deserve better.

Jerry O'Connor (asst. coach - TGS): We got an idea. It's probably not the greatest of ideas. But we're running out of options. You obviously can't play good enough. So we're just gonna mask our really ****** up playing.

McKenzie opens up a closet door. There's a couple 30 racks of Molson, a couple more for Labatt Blue. And on top of all that, there's a brick of weed and a small stack of rolling papers.

McKenzie: So, who wants to play hockey?

O'Connor: Here's what we're gonna do. We just won't practice. We'll just blaze up. Get ****faced. We either do good, or have a reason for being so embarassing. Can any of you think of a better plan?

St. Jean: Did we get approval from Lexington to do this?

O'Connor: No. But we're in Iansisle. So we don't care anyway. If all else fails, we just all move to New York.

Oliverry proves that it has his place in Cherry cup by winning 2-0 against Squornshelous

Oliverrian Coach is very happy with this win that, hopefully, will spectacularly return Oliverry into the competition. Anyway, the game was decidd in 1st period when Pat Andretti scored a spectacular goal which strangely looked very similar to the goal he scored last year in the final of the league to lead the Letremlay Bleu-Blanc-Rouge to a win against Sunberry Boarders.

Blizzards draw Ice Cats, inch to within one point of first

The Sarzonian ice hockey team has played five matches and has one win to show for it in the eighth Cherry Cup, but the team is still undefeated. Facing Group 3's top seed and Sarzonia's regional rivals the Vilita Ice Cats, the Blizzards played what Coach Harold Clark called a "schizophrenic" game en route to a 3-3 tie that kept the Blizzards and the Ice Cats within one point of idle Fimble Loving People for first place.

"We played about as well as you could play when we were on offense," Clark said. "We did nicely on the power play (one goal in four chances), but we were shaky defensively. You can't give up two shorthanded goals against an elite team and expect to walk away with any points."

The team celebrated the return of starting goaltender Brian Snow by giving up 35 shots, forcing him to make 32 saves to keep his team in the game. For their part, the Blizzards fired 29 shots on Ice Cats goalie Tommy Finn, getting goals from Kevin Dewey, Mike Ridley, and defenseman Bill Langham.

"We've got to play better in our own blue line," Snow said. "I've got to play better and we've got to make sure I don't end up having to stand on my head for us to have a chance."

Vilita's Ricky Fike put the Ice Cats on top with 8:19 to go in the first period when Dewey coughed up the puck while trying to make a behind the back pass to Langham. Fike was off to the races and Langham couldn't catch up. Fike put the puck between the five hole for the first short-handed goal against the Blizzards in the Cherry Cup.

"That was just a bad play on his part," Clark said after the game. "I reminded him about it as soon as he reached the bench." Dewey ended up sitting the rest of the first period and got a tongue lashing from Clark between periods. He would make amends just 90 seconds into the second period when he fired a slap shot on the Blizzards' second power play of the game and his shot beat Finn glove side.

"I had to do something," Dewey said. "I'm glad I did it so quickly."

The Ice Cats got another shorthanded goal when Snow misplayed a clearing attempt and River Suzgar easily tapped the puck into the net past a surprised Snow with 11:24 left in the second period. Clark called the team's timeout after the Suzgar goal and used the 30 seconds to calm his team down. Ridley knotted the game back up at 2-2 when he stole a clearance attempt from defenseman Mike Ice and blasted the shot past Finn with just 18 seconds left in the period.

The third period saw more opportunities for each club, with Vilita's only even strength goal putting the Ice Cats ahead 3-2 courtesy of a Emhaoi Linaozi slapshot after he won a loose puck. But the Blizzards came back once again, this time led by their captain Langham. With Dewey serving a 10 minute misconduct, Langham made a rare rush up ice and tapped in a rebound of a Ridley shot for his first goal of the tournament.

The final left the Ice Cats fuming that they couldn't hold three leads against the Blizzards, but both teams had opportunities to salt the game away and couldn't take advantage. The Blizzards will face Idealistea in the last game of the first stage, hoping to get a full two points for the first time in three games.

"We are comfortable to win each game by only one goal, as any win is better than a loss. We are a very consistent team, despite the fact that we don't get hugely impressive results. For this reason the people of Frozcheva have voted to call our national team the 'Grinders'."

FIRST HALF OOC NOTES!

And here’s the part where I, Iansisle’s player, ask everyone for their honest opinions of how the Cup is working.

I know the Scorinator may seem a little random, but it seems to be balancing itself out over time (ref: KN). I’m not sure that will comfort poor Squorn, though :). I am glad that it decided (through some psychic ability, as there’s no RP bonus) to bless Frozcheva and Fimble Loving People, who I feel are two of the best (and most funny) rookies the Cherry Cup has ever had.

One main question that I have concerns the pacing. Is a game every ~2 days OK for everyone? Would you like updates more frequently? Less? Now’s your chance to let me know!

Lastly, I’m sorry this report is early. I know I won’t have time to do something so elaborate a post tomorrow, and I feel that the many great people who have spent so much of their time participating in this Cherry Cup deserve something special. Cheers everyone and let’s have a great second half!

PS: Yeah, I forced a lot of the Award Names. If you have better / funnier award names, post them here or TG to me and I’ll consider using them at the end of qualifying.

Blizzards bring dose of 'reality' in win

Strange as it sounds for the Sarzonian ice hockey team, the Blizzards remain the only Cherry Cup team without a loss after the first half of qualifying for the finals. The Blizzards got a hat trick from Mike Ridley and two assists from defenseman Kevin Dewey and goalie Brian Snow made 22 saves en route to a 3-2 win over Idealista.

"We just played a good game of hockey," Coach Howard Clark said. "We've played some good matches and some not so good matches and we've been able to earn at least one point out of all of them."

The Blizzards (2-0-4, eight points) needed the win to keep pace with Fimble Loving People, who defeated underachieving Squornshelous 4-3. Sarzonia is just one point behind Fimble Loving People (4-1-1, nine points) for first place but Clark said the other teams in the group "are breathing down our necks.

"Some of the teams haven't got their legs under them yet," Clark said. "We need to be ready for them when they finally bring their 'A' games." The team will also need to be ready to bring its own 'A' game, beginning with the next match which is against Fimble Loving People.

"We have a chance to take first place in the group," Snow said. "We've got to play our game to be able to pull it off, but it can be done."

After the first half of qualifying Fimble loving peoples find themselves surprisingly at the top of the table. This must take some of the pressure off of the coach who, for some obscure reason beknownst only to himself, has believed himself to be the target of an assasination plot based on team performance.

In other team news. Two Fimble loving peoples players have been rushed to hospital after recieving the award for wussiest team. It is believed they were so insulted by the award they set out to prove their manliness by picking a fight with a group of squornshelous supporters last night.

Young players Brian Farmish and Jack Baker have been brought in to replace the injured Nick Sly and Matthew Michaels.

And it has been confirmed Samantha Friar is female but has recently been dropped in favour of Gary Johnson. It has been revealed that her often violent reactions on the ice to the merest event were caused because, in the words of her agent, it was "her time of the month". During the last few games her performance has dropped significantly.

"Oh good, we're through" was all the coach could really say.

"We're so pleased to be announced the best rookies and to tie for the best defence."

"I declare a national holiday, whether I'm allowed to or not!"

The government of Frocheva have now made this an annual holiday now known as 'Hockey Day'. The whole nation is behind the team and are greatly anticipating the next portion of the Cup!

Sergei Molotov has almost recovered from his injury. His IQ appears to have dropped by about 20 points, but that was expected, and is no real blow as Sergei doesn't really need to many brain cells to know how to fight.

Oliverrian team now knows how to win games
-"2 in a row. Two in a row! said Coach Johnathan Blue. We now know how to win and the tourney isn't finished."

If Oliverry continues this way, they will qualify for the final phase of the competition. 3 goals led them to a win against Nordwind that is 6th in the Group C. Oliverrian goalies aren't playing how they are supposed to. They, normally, are the best goalies in the world. Oliverrian forwards also. A chance this country has a very good defence. Without it, Oliverry wouldn't be where they are.

Rising Star Linaozi Featured in Sexy Farmer Magazine

-----------------------Rising Vilita Ice Cats star forward Emhaoi Linaozi of Starblaydian hockey team Bisarley Bluejays has been featured on the cover of the Starblaydia-based "Sexy Farmer". The magazine, regularly printed in rural areas of Starblaydia to appeal to the other-half of the farming family, is featuring a foreign model for the first time in it's upcoming edition. Linaozi has become an icon for women and men alike in rural Bisarley, Starblaydia and his success in Cherry Cup VIII has improved his world image even more.

http://www.dirt-racing.com/3wide/sites/vilita/sports/hockey/SexyFarmer.jpg

-----------------------It is also believed that the magazine has inserted Linaozi on it's cover to expand it's printing network beyond Starblaydia and into Turori and Vilita. It is unknown whether there is any interest for "Sexy Farmer" in Vilita, but word has it that a small convenience store in Lpaka, Turori has ordered it's first copies featuring Vilitan Native Emhaoi Linaozi.

-----------------------Emhaoi Linaozi was born and raised in the Liguon Valley region of Vilita on a pineapple farm. His interest in Hockey spurned when his brother, Lakbrana, lost a foot do to injuries suffered when the brothers were playing soccer with a pineapple and no shoes on. From then on, Emhaoi would use a stick to shoot pineapples at his brother, who was stationary as a goalie. Unfortunately, Lakbrana died at the age of 15 for unknown causes, but Emhaoi began travelling to the Ice Rink in Lopinka to play with the Lopinka youth hockey organization.

Why Must We Suck So Bad?

Squornshelan players are in a state of shock aftyer entereing this Cherry Cup 4th seeded and expecting to thrive. Instead, they've dropped games to teams ranked far below them and fallen to last place. Their play has been horrible enough that only 5 tickets have been sold for their next home game, against Vilita. Also, a car bomb was set off outside the Squornshelan Ice Hockey Association Headquarters in Vogsphere. Two suspects currently being detained are both season ticket holders for the Vogsphere Imperials, the local hockey team. It seems to be a case of fans becoming so disgusted with their team's play that they tried to destroy them. Luckily, no one was killed in the blast and only a few bystanders were injured.

Linaozi faithful book Squornshelous Tickets.

-------------------The Emhaoi Linaozi Fanclub has begun booking tickets to see Linaozi in action in the Cherry Cup of Hockey in Squornshelous. The fanclub currently consists only of a group of five backwoods Starblaydians, 4 teenage girls and one oddly shaped drifter named S'mon. However the Fanclub's founder was quoted as hoping that the appearance in a foreign country will open the fanclub to a brand new field of members, and they hope to interact with all the die-hard sports fans in Squornshelous to speak of the great things they can do as a member of the Emhaoi Linaozi fanclub.

-------------------No one at the Vilita National had the heart to tell the young girl that no other tickets had been sold for the match, so it will be interesting to see the scheduled interview with the club when they return from abroad.

Pace at once every two days seems good. I wouldn't stretch it out much more than that without notice, or else people start forgetting about it.

And now you know how CC5 sorta went? Sure, different scoring for part of the time, similar results. Rookie teams go hot early and long, veteran teams struggle early and long.

--------------------

The Gulf States Airlines is now booking "roadie" packages, where fans with lots of money and zero lives besides fanaticism of SeaWolves hockey, can go on official tours and get perks. A few diehard fans were doing similar things on their own. For $2200 - you can get hotels, game tickets, plane tickets, and more to the rest of the games of the Cherry Cup series.

Vilita enter Cherry Cup 9 Running

---------------------The Vilitan Association of Gaming Industry and National Amusements has announced it's intentions to back a Vilitan bid to host Cherry Cup 9. The VAGINA opened up to the idea following the completion of a new multi-million ture ice complex in Yeaddin, Vilita. The Complex, that remains unnamed, has been dubbed by locals as the "Squirrel House". The name comes from the team that will inhabit the arena in the inagural Vilitan Ice Hockey League, the Yeaddin Squirrels. The VAGINA was finally penetrated after many attempts to attract such a large thrust to the Northern Economy in the form of a major hockey tournament. Under the terms of the agreement, the final details of the bid would be confirmed at the completion of the first Atlantian Oceania Hockey Championships, also being held in Vilita. Two Other Arenas are currently under construction and would be available for use should the Cherry Cup come to Vilita, but only the Squirrel House will be available for the AOHC.

Fimble loving peoples continues to win.

A great start to the campaign for Fimble loving peoples as they destroy their closest rivals.

We held interviews with the coach and two key players.

"How are you feeling after the teams win?."

Coach: "We won?."

Farmish: "Yes coach."

"And Brian. How are you feeling after your first match?."

Farmish: "I'm on top of the world. This is the big time. And to score. That just tops the cake. I'm feeling great."

"Good. Sam. How are you feeling after being dropped?."

Friar: "I'm hurt. I really am. I tried hard. I gave it my best."

We were forced to end the interview there as chaos broke loose. Friar burst into tears before handing out a beating to Farmish. This must have triggered something in the coach who left screaming about his "end".

the start of a Tanah Burungesque slide?

(Exactly as predicted...)

OCTAVIANUS "NOT AT ALL WELL"

"There's no doubt we were the better team," said Cassowaries left winger Estrella after a narrow loss to the Erratic Iceberg of Kalaallit Nunnaat. "But ya gotta be careful: these guys kill when they lose."

The Cassowaries were well on their way to a comfortable win over the red-and-white-clad poll-takers from the polar regions (groan - ed.). Then left-winger Octavianus, who had already scored three goals, spotted a small woman in the stands, carrying a soapstone sculpture and muttering something about harpoons and seagulls. When Octavianus headed into the crowd to investigate, he met with nasty surprise. The woman escaped, but the Tanah Burung hockey star is now in hospital with a severe stabbing wound to the head. Doctors report Octavianus is in "critical to mellow" condition.

Will he recover? "Yeah. When shrimps learn to whistle," replied the team physician.

Tanah Burung is now on a severe losing streak. The team is hoping that now they have acknowledged the streak, it will come to an immediate end.

"Hey, worked once before," said Zachary, who plays left wing for the Cassowaries.

"We're doing ok" said the coach. "Not as well as I'd like, but were still up there. I can understand you're all tired from the first stage, but you all need to carry on playing your best or we won't stay at the top. I you lack motivation then think of all the folks back home who are following your every move, waiting with anticipation to see who you beat next. I'm not bothered, but they are, and really, we're only here because of them..."

The players looked at each other forlornly, then wandered out of the locker room with their kit. The speech, however strange, had hit home with them, and now they were going to win the next match, even if it killed them...

Blizzards rebound from loss, light up 5-1

Go figure the Sarzonian national ice hockey team. The team had more ties (4) than wins and losses combined going into last night's game against sixth seeded Squornshelous, a team it defeated earlier in the Cherry Cup. After a 4-2 loss to Crystilakere in the Atlantian Oceania hockey championships, the Blizzards completed a two game sweep of Squornshelous with a 5-1 win, bringing the team to within one point of Fimble Loving People.

Forward Jeff Cantnell had his breakout game of the tournament, scoring a hat trick and notching assists on the other two goals en route to the win. Defenseman Kevin Dewey and forward Kelly Miller had the other two goals. Goaltender Tim Collins got a rare start with usual starter Brian Snow healty and made 26 saves.

"We're pleased with the way we've played against Squornshelous," Coach Harold Clark said. "We've still got a ways to go yet before we can really appreciate what's going on here, but this was nice."

The team got two of its goals on the power play thanks to a rifled slap shot by Dewey and strong work along the boards by Miller. One of Cantnell's goals came shorthanded.

"When you play well on the special teams units it makes winning these games a whole lot easier," Collins said. "I faced more shots than the team would like, but there were only one or two difficult chances. I'm pretty happy with the way things turned out."

MORE GOALS!

"I'm going to be short and simple, we need more goals and need to move our asses to make the Cup" said Kyle Thomas in an interview earlier this morning. "Anyone who thinks that this is just a game is totally wrong. To us it's more than that. In Hockey Canada, it's life". No one can tell what is going on in the player's minds right now, seeing that the communist regime in Hockey Canada is falling. "They're going to give it all they have" said Stan "Butch" Goring. "They'll do anything to win and put them in a tie for 1st place. This revolution has them psyched for the next game, and it will be a memorable one." Goring admits that Hockey Canada was not playing to it's full potential, which is why a new roster was revised. Chemistry is there, but the heart isn't. But the heart of the nation of Hockey Canada will be backing up the players in tonight's game.
Brazillico
26-01-2005, 20:26
Hockey Brazillico’s headquarters isn’t really a headquarters in the same sense as the UN’s central building. It’s a shabby one-roomed shack on the outskirts of downtown Kalita with an outhouse out back. As we enter, the door hangs lazily on its hinges and it’s noticeable that a coat of paint is well overdue as the once firehouse red paint has begun to chip off fairly heavily in some areas and faded to a near rust color. Inside, the shack is poorly decorated, with two sturdy steel chairs adorning the front of a melamine desk. The contents on the top of the desk are pretty ordinary, a laptop computer with scattered pens, papers and pictures of family. The focal point of the room is a large picture of Brazillico’s national hockey team, posing on the ice in their green and yellow uniforms. In the left corner of the office hangs a miniature palm tree with yellowing leaves in desperate need of water. Behind the desk is the president’s chair, the “Captain’s chair” as he calls it, a slightly more upscale version of the steel chairs for the visitors complete with minimal padding and wheels. And by god can it ever spin. Despite the office’s dilapidated appearance, big things are brewing today within its crusty walls.

-We colonized Atlantic Canada before right?
-Yes.
-We need all the help we can get for our national hockey side. We’re starting to master how to skate, but after our huge win over Minerjon, we’re just two points out of second. Have you found any talent from that region to bolster our line-up?
-Yes, I have found one player.
-Splendid! Is it that Crosby kid?
-Uh, Sidney Crosby? Well, apparently he’s injured.
-But I heard he was alright again. Don Cherry himself ripped into him for not playing in the CHL Propsects game.
-Ummm, he just doesn’t want to play for us.
-Damnit! Well who did you get? Brad Richards?
-He’s injured.
-He’s not faking it like that Crosby a-hole?
-No, he’s legitiametly injured after going to Russia.
-Michael Ryder?
-He’s in Germany.
-Al MacInnis?
-He’s too old. And besides, we can’t get any players who have ever represented Canada in any senior international tournament.
-Jaromir Jagr?
-He’s softer than butter and he’s not from Atlantic Canada. He’s from the Czech Republic actually.
-Blimey! Well who did you land us?
-Harold Druken ( http://www.nhl.com/lineups/player/8466171.html).
-Who the f*ck is Harold Druken?
-He’s a newfie who plays for the St. John’s Maple Leafs.
-I thought the Maple Leafs were based up in Toronto.
-Well they are, St. John’s is their farm team. Think of them as being a Second Division side in football.
-So this Druken kid isn’t that good?
-Well, he’s only played 31 NHL games in the last six years, but that’s 31 more NHL games played by our entire roster combined. He should give us some experience. Besides, he’s also played more NHL games than Sidney Crosby.
-If you put it that way, you’ve made quite a killing. I’m looking forward to seeing Druken in the line-up for our big match against Sliponia.

"Yes we are. We are in Cherry Cup 8 and we are third in the group."

"That's not bad, keep it up."

Giantkillers in Cup

"In today's news, the Hisam Giantkillers are currently in 3rd place in the group stages of Cherry Cup 8. They are behind Tanah Burung and KN, those people with that impossible name to pronounce. Apparently the Sports Bureau is pleased with this position and wish the team the best of luck.

Hockey Canada announced that the players are "psyched" for tonight's game against Nouveau Richelieu. Even captain Kyle Thomas was seen with this "Happy Box" over his head (a cardboard box with "happy box" scribbled on the side. Serious and keen on their goal (a 5 or more goal victory), the Hockey Canadians know this will not be an easy game. But no matter what happens, 70 million Hockey Canadians will be backing them up.

The discreet coach of Équipe Nationale de Hockey de Nouveau Richelieu, Alain Daudelin, made a rare appearance in front of the media to answer to Hockey Canada announcement. «We respect this team and the fact that we are so close in the rankings prooves that it'll be, indeed, a tight game. Lazure, our goalkeeper, is more than ready to play and will give another great performance. And we can also count on OUR 145 millions fans !»

"In sporting news top top football team Benign Rovers have gone bankrupt due to excessive donations to charity, but first, news on our nations hockey team. They sit atop their qualifying group after yet another startling win. This incredible luck could be said to be down to our foreign superstar hitting the net atleast once a match, but I prefer to call it teamwork. After the next math I will try to get an interview with one of the players."

Blizzards melt against rivals, 3-0

This was not the way Coach Howard Clark and the Sarzonian national ice hockey team wanted to go into the stretch run of the eighth Cherry Cup. The team played a listless game against rivals Oliverry and trudged off the ice with a 3-0 loss to a suddenly resurgent team. After a slow start, Oliverry is now just two points behind Sarzonia for second place and one behind third seeded Vilita for third.

"This was probably the worst feeling we've ever had after a game," Clark said. "I don't know that I've ever been as disappointed in my team as I am tonight. We just played without heart out there and it's sickening that it's against a team we consider our rivals."

Goalie Brian Snow, the man who was all but untouchable between the pipes for the Blizzards, now will have to earn his way back onto the ice after Clark benched him between the second and third periods with two goals already past him. Backup goalkeeper Tim Collins stopped all nine shots he faced in the third period before Oliverry added an empty netter. Snow made just 12 stops.

"I don't agree with Coach, but he's the one who makes those decisions," Snow said. "I'll just have to cheer Timmy on and hope he can do a good job in there." Snow will have to do that from the press box because Clark named Ben Knight the backup to Collins. Snow left shortly after the interview and refused to stop for autograph seekers, likely drawing a fine.

"I don't [expletive] care. I'm not signing any [expletive] autographs," Snow allegedly said to fans surrounding the locker room. Clark said he would meet with Snow to discuss the situation.

"We have rules in place for that behavior," Clark said. "One of them is you treat the fans with respect. You sign autographs no matter how bad you're feeling. [Defenseman] Kevin Dewey got a minus-3 and he was still out there talking to fans. [Right wing] Mike Ridley missed five shots. He was still signing autographs. Snow'd better get his head out of his [expletive] or he'll be off the team."

Players from Hockey Canada in Iansisle are awaiting the next match, assured that it will be a big one. Captain Kyle Thomas, who leads the team in scoring and is tied for the tournement lead made a breif comment today "All down to the wire, it's us against them. Go big or go home, yadda yadda yadda. Say what you want it won't change that we're ready for them". Headlines in Hockey Canada have been printed: "Beat Nouveau", "Thomas vs. Lazure, who will win?" and "Prime Minister arrested for murder". More on this game tonight at 11 when Greg Cosmopolitan interviews the players.

Sarzonia is having problems with them. Those teams played 4 games together, Oliverry didn't lose any of them. They proved it once again when they won 3-0 against them. Now, Oliverry is playing like they always played, having a 3-1-0 record in the last 4 matches. Now, the coach, Johnathan Blue, just hope they will win a spot in the competition. We met him in the locker room:
*Team screaming background*
"Oliverry is getting pretty good right now. If playoffs started today, we are doing them. And to play at home is so fun, mainly when you win against a rival. The 20, 721 people in the arena were happy to see us. Hope it wasn't for the free hot-dog"

The new Squornshelan team notched a big victory against Vilita, winning 6-3 and pulling Squornshelous off the bottom of the tables. To quote starting goalkeeper Steve-O, "Ooh ooh eeh eeh yeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaah!!!!" An interesting question has arisen from the success of the chimps and the SIHA is submitting a request for the Squornshelan team to play a friendly with the talented team of Dwarves from Starblaydia.

Coach Haztarr was busy chasing his team around the practise rink with a large flaming club when he received the full tables of the entire Cherry Cup Groups.

"Twenty-seven goals furr, eh?" he said to himself, whirling the club around his head, "that's nae bad, laddies. BUT! Twenty-wun against?! What are ye? Stupid? C'mere! I'll kill all a' ye!"

It seems that nothing is ever good enough for the ever-excitable Coach Haztarr. Best Goals For in the Group by a distance is something to be proud of. Three goals a game, no less. But joint-worst in the Goals Against column? That just won't do.

So, once again, the 'Coach' chases his team around an ice rink with various large, blunt or sharp, sometimes flaming, objects. Makes them skate faster, at least...

Hockey Canada is now in a tough spot. A miracle on ice is needed for these young men (average age: 23). They will no doubt keep driving until they reach their goal: Quarter-Finals.

Hockey Canadian kids have dreamed about playing for Hockey Canada at the Cherry Cup, and it has for these young men here today. Haven't tasted victory in a while, Hockey Canada will stop at nothing to reach their goal. But it is very possible, 2 wins would put Hockey Canada in 2nd place, not to mention the game in hand they have.

Hockey Canadians everywhere hope the best for this team.

Several crazed anti-Hockey Canada fans ran out onto the ice this morning during a Hockey Canada practise. The fans set fire to both nets and throwing plexiglass away after it was removed.

"If this is a shot from some team, we're just letting you know that our next few games, we will be ready, ready for anything." Coach goring said today. Hockey Canadians are praying for a miracle on ice. They'll have to win the next few games in order to advance to the relegation round.

"I want this bad" Kyle Thomas said in an interview 10 minutes ago. "We've been dreaming of moments like this... to overcome adversity and go beyond expectations, we all want it." Scott Hannan said outside his hotel room in a bathrobe.

Hockey Canada will play again tonight, enraged by their loss, they'll need a spark to start the inferno.

It's pretty much over.

Hockey Canada needs a true miracle now to enter the relegation round with time against them. A loss to tropical Tanah Burung gave Hockey Canada black eye and bruised confidence with time against them. A lone goal scored by Scott Hannan assisted by Hugh Budziarek and Kyle Thomas was all they could produce last night. All Hockey Canada Hockey is saying is:

OUCH

The Brazillico Advance

Druken Pays Dividends
Newfie scores lone goal against Starblaydia

The hockey sense was always there for the Brazillico Ice Bats. Everyone on the team has been likely playing football at least since the age of two so they know how to put the damn ball in the back of the net and cosom hockey is pretty popular in Brazillico, so the stickhandling, passing and shooting aspects of the game are pretty well down. They top two lines actually play a pretty nice style of hockey based on puck possesion and movement. As for the bottom two lines, they're mostly big muckers who are on the ice to hurt people. But all Brazillican players are rejoined by one common denominator; they can't skate. The reason is likely geographical, as the tropical climate of the Formerly Jingoistic States isn't exactly condusive to making ice. As you can imagine, the players don't get nearly as many chances to practice as those living in nordic countries. Brazillico had been missing that homerun threat all tournament, but now they've found it with the recent edition of Mr. Harold Druken.

Druken, 25, who grew up near the frigid cove of St. John's, Newfoundland, hadn't been to Brazillico his entire life and probably would not have known it existed if not for the island's annexation some 70 years ago. However, he now proudly dawns the green and yellow, and dawned it no more proudly than when he notched the game-tying goal with 7:34 left in the third period against Starblaydia.

Starblaydia was in Brazillico’s zone and pressing hard for an insurance goal. Haradin Azanulbizarn passed the puck back from the corner to defenseman Hagard Hatzarr, who lost it in his skates. Hatzarr tried in vain to kick it out to his stick, but Druken came charging on him, poking the puck off the boards and starting a rush the other way. Hatzarr tried to hook onto Druken, but he fought off the weak hold attempt with ease. He headed up the ice with a full head of steam and only Nurri Temekrahin coming in support of the Starblaydis from the other side. Druken slowed his stride down a bit as he crossed the blue line and began controlling the puck back and forth. Temekrahin came sliding in with a diving poke check, but it was too late as Druken had already released a snap shot on target. Dwarven goaltender, Dagnir Tumunzahar, jumped in the air to stop the shot, but the effort was in vain as the puck kissed the crossbar and found itself in the back of the net.

“You know, eh,” said Druken after the match, “I figure he was a little guy so I’d go high, eh. He was quick, but the little dude was little and I didn’t figure he’d stop a high one..”

Druken remained coy when asked about his skating ability.

“Well, you know, pilons and plastic products in general aren’t easy to come by in Newfoundland, eh, so I’d practice for hours right in the harbour skating around driftwood and seals. The seals are the tricky ones eh, they actually move.”

Druken will have to continue his fine form as Brazillico now sits only three points out of first place in the division. They have two matches left, one against an equally warm-climated but according to the standings, evidently less talented side from Hiiraan, and then a huge match against Frozcheva. The Frozchevans currently are sitting in top spot in the division, and if Brazillico hopes to ensure a playoff spot, they’ll need a strong showing against them. The Ice Bats have been gaining momentum and it should be a very interesting matchup for the final day of round robin.

"We're top o't'leegue..." Haztarr sat in near-silence, staring at the results and tables. "We've made it t'Cherry Cup Finals. Blumin' 'eck."

As quietly as they could, the players tried to tiptoe out of the dressing room before their Coach regained his senses and started yelling again. Though the sight of eighteen Dwarves in full ice hockey equipment tiptoeing is rather amusing, they were too late.

"But if ye slip up against Oliverry and dunnae win t'group I'm gonna be real angry wit'ye!" Haztarr had suddenly burst into normality again. "Ye'll feel t'back o'mae 'and if ye don't win this group, ye lazy bastads!"

With that, the players decided against tiptoeing and concentrated on all-out running. Which is equally as amusing to watch, mind you.

Maybe the cost of prescriptions in Iansisle is really high, because whatever medication Dwarves need to combat being bi-polar, Coach Haztarr certainly isn't getting any of it.

((I've actually been thinking: I believe I need to add a group stage to make these playoffs work correctly. I'm think four groups of three (four games), from which the top two teams of each advance to a classic tournament with eight teams.

Does this sound ok to everyone? Or is this problem simply the result of my poor mathematical ability.

Oh, and Vilita, I wouldn't dance *quite* yet. ;) If both Sliponia and Oliverry win their last game, they'd knock you out of the top three of group three. If Hisam and Nouveau Richelieu both win as well, then they knock you out of the wild card. Sure, it's a slim chance, but it *might* happen.

Just so everyone knows, the final games:

Brazillico v. Frozcheva
The Gulf States v. Minerjon
Hiraan v. Starblaydia

Hockey Canada v. Lovisa
Hisam v. Wella
Nouveau Richelieu v. Tanah Burung

Idealistea v. Sarzonia
Squornshelous v. Fimble Loving People
Nordwind v. Oliverry

Vilita needs one team out of Wella, Tanah Burung, Idealistea, or Nordwind to get a single point in order to qualify.

[OOC: Or what you could do is give the top four seeds (the three group winners and the best wild card) a bye in the first round of knockouts and have the 5-12 seeds play each other. After the first round, you can then re-seed it and have the second round pit the teams who had the first round bye take on the teams who played, then you'd have quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals.]

Blizzards nearly left out in the cold

A strong first half of play during the Cherry Cup has given way to struggles in the second half for the Sarzonian national ice hockey team. The team dropped its most recent game to Vilita 2-1 to drop the Blizzards two points behind Fimble Loving People and Vilita for second place in the group with one game remaining.

Right winger Mike Ridley scored the team's only goal, a power play marker with 8:23 to go in the second period. Besides that, Ice Cats goalie Tommy Finn was just a little bit better than Sarzonia's Brian Snow in net. Snow turned aside 23 Ice Cats shots, but Finn made 29 stops.

"We're right down to the wire," Coach Harold Clark said. "The Ice Cats are a great team that hasn't shown its form much of the tournament but they seem to be on a roll now. We're going to have to win our last game to ensure our spot in the knockouts."

The Blizzards may have had a bit of a hangover from a 2-2 tie against Cherry Cup V champion Starblaydia in the Atlantian Oceania ice hockey tournament. Clark said the team played "a little over its head" against Starblaydia. He denied the team had any incentive from the football history between the two countries.

"Football and hockey have nothing to do with each other," he said. "If anyone has to use football matches to get themselves up for hockey, they don't belong on the ice." He acknowledged that there is a "minor friction," between the two countries in sporting events.

"It's not really a rivalry because we haven't beaten them that much," he continued. "But there is a bit of athletic tension between our two countries." Starblaydia's presence in the war between Lamoni and Novvs Atlantis played no role in the team's preparations for that match, Clark said.

"It didn't even get brought up by the players. The only time I even thought about it was when I asked about security procedures around the arena."

The Blizzards take on last place Idealista with a bid into the next round at stake. That will be the team's sole focus when the puck drops, Clark said.

"Our destiny is in our own hands," he said. "That's right where we want to be."

Hockey Canada needs a rout over Lovisa to even have a long shot (Hisam and Nouveau Richelieu must lose by 2 or more goals each) at making the finals.

In regards to last night's game with a 3-2 win over Nouveau Richelieu, a few players made some comments. "Wow, they were great, but we've finally reached our top form but it might be too late." Goalie Cameron Greer said after facing 34 shots yesterday. "You gotta hand it to them, they were playing like they owned the division," Captain Kyle Thomas said yesterday. "Lovisa, is dead last and has no shot at this. We need a really really big win over Lovisa to advance, then our goal will be achived." Lovisa has not been doing well lately (and no posts in a while which raises the question is he/she really cares). We're going in and winning it tonight! GO HOCKEY CANADA GO!!!

OOC - Sarzonia's idea is a pretty good one, it would save a lot of time and trouble.

The Brazillico Advance

Shameful!
Bad call forces Brazillico to settle for a lone point

Brazillico appeared to be in fine form in the Cherry Cup, leading Hiiraan 2-1 with just a few minutes left in the match. The players had been already advised that The Gulf States had lost 3-2 to Starbalydia, meaning a victory would put them firmly into the group’s final playoff spot. With 2:16 left to go in the final period, Hiiraan’s Scott Akbar received the puck and headed up the ice. Brazillican forward Carlo Cardozo took his stick and hooked onto Akbar’s jersey in an effort to impede his progress. What transpired from this moment on is absolutely disgraceful.

Akbar then collapsed to the ice and started flopping around like an epileptic fish out of water in the midst of a seizure. He turned, whined and kicked violently as he held onto his right shoulder. Hiiraanian trainers came running out onto the ice to come to Akbar’s aid as he continued to shake violently on the ice. The Brazillican fans in attendance held their breath as Akbar continued to roll around in pain. As Cardozo was being escorted off the ice on a 2 minute “slashing” call and a game misconduct, Akbar seemed to calm down. He then got up to his feet with the help of the trainers and skated to the bench under his own power, though he appeared to be in a bit of discomfort.

Akbar’s academy-award winning performance (http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/topstory/sports/ribeiro_mike040411.jpg)

Brazillico won the faceoff and took the puck up to Hiiraan’s zone. The short-handed Brazillicans cycled the puck down low, killing time off the clock until Jeronimo Lobo passed the puck into the slot to a pinching Ignacio Connor. Connor one-timed a booming shot that whistled just past the far post. The Brazillicans now retreated quickly as the Hiiraanians rushed back up the ice. Coming along with them was the goaltender, who was going to be substituted for a skater so the Hiiraanians could enjoy a 6-4 advantage. Hiiraan entered the zone and the crowd collectively gasped as the extra attacker jumped onto the ice. It was Scott Akbar!

Hiiraan set the play up as the both defensemen passed the puck between themselves, looking for an open lane to get a point shot on net. The right defensemen then passed it down to the right wing, who tried to make a move on net. Brazillican defenseman Coco Boccabella played the man and hammered the Hiiraanian player with a good clean hit. However, the forward momentum of the puck caused it to glide towards the front of the net, where a hard charging Akbar swooned in to wrist it past the right pad of Brazillican goalie, Mike Alvares. Akbar pumped his fist wildly and raised his arms in the air as he evened the score 2-2 for his team. The game would end with that same score.

How’s the shoulder now, Scott? (http://english2.globetrotter.net/news_images/sports/original/canadiens_hurricanes_full.jpg)

“A diver! A motherf*cking little pansy ass diver!” said Carlo Cardozo after the match. “Pardon my Audioslavian, but there’s no room for that in hockey. I started playing the sport because I was tired of all the f*ckin’ playacting in football. Akbar had better watch himself if ever we cross again.”

Akbar’s swan dive has certainly put Brazillico behind the eight ball. They’re now tied with The Gulf States in points for third place, but are considerably behind in goal difference. Under the following situations, the Brazillican Ice Bats make it through to the next round:

-A Brazillico win and a Gulf States win, with Brazillico winning by five more goals than The Gulf States.
-A Brazillico win with a Gulf States draw or loss.
-A Brazillico draw with a Gulf States loss and a Hiiraan draw or loss.
-A Brazillico loss and a Gulf States loss, with The Gulf States losing my more than five goals than Brazillico, couple with a Hiiraanian loss.

Brazillico definitely has its work cut out for themselves, as they’ll be playing second place Frozcheva, while The Gulf States will be playing against bottom feeders, Minerjon. Frozcheva has already qualified for the next round, so there’s hope that maybe they’ll go easy on the Ice Bats and put a “B” side on the ice to give the young kids some experience and rest up their stars. In any event, Brazillico will have to put forth its finest effort to have any hope of advancing to the next round.

----------

Game One - Iansisle versus Brazillico
Court: Ianapalis Sports Arena (Ianapalis, 32,050)
Brazillico has put together a solid, if unspectacular, qualifying campaign as rookies. Worries that a bad penalty call might cost the team its qualification have been overcome, although the team is the lowest seed in the Cup. Meanwhile, many fear that the Gulls may be out of practice as they have not played a single game against a high quality opponent since their scrimmage against Liverpool England.

Prediction: Iansisle 2 - 1 Brazillico

Game Two - Liverpool England versus Nouveau Richelieu
Court: Whitman Plaza (Thorntree, 22,000)
Nouveau Richelieu turned on the heat late in qualifiers to surprisingly usurp Hisam and squeak into the Cup under everyone’s radar. A draw against fourth seed Tanah Burung on the final game day ought to give the team some confidence. Liverpool England, like Iansisle, has been out of practice lately but should be able to beat the newcomers.

Prediction: Liverpool England 3 - 1 Nouveau Richelieu

Game Three - Frozcheva versus Oliverry
Court: Daldonice (Vesshampton, 29,600)
Starblaydia only bumped rookie team Frozcheva from first in the last two games. Frozcheva regularly beat up on some of the elite teams of the Cherry Cup, including Starblaydia, Sliponia, and the Gulf States. However, Oliverry is a resurgent team who battled Nordwind to a scoreless draw in their last game. Look for Frozcheva to win in a squeaker.

Prediction: Frozcheva 5 - 4 Oliverry (tied 2-2 after four periods; Frozcheva wins shootout 3-2)

Game Four - Sarzonia versus Vilita
Court: Richard Tri Memorial Ice Rink (Ianapalis, 32,500)
Although Sarzonia looked to be slipping towards the end, the Blizzards came back with a strong win in Idealistea to put themselves solidly into the Cherry Cup. However, the Ice Cats did hand Sarzonia a 2-1 defeat the game before. Look for Vilita to continue its domination over the Blizzards. The game will be played in the brand-new Richard Tri Memorial Ice Rink in western Ianapalis while the Gulls battle the Ice Bats down the road.

Prediction: Vilita 3 - 2 Sarzonia

End Of Qualfying OOC Notes

I’d just like to thank everyone for a wonderful time. There have been a few hiccups - the scorinator likes rookies just a little too much, I screwed up the Cup (should have let 16 teams in instead of 12), more than one glorious veteran failed to qualify and so forth - but I think that through patience and cooperation the qualifiers were a success nonetheless.

My apologies to all the people who took the time to post a RP but didn’t qualify: Hockey Canada, the Gulf States, Squornshelous, Hisam, Hiraan and Minejon. To the rookies, we’ve enjoyed having you participate and do hope that you’ll join us again for CCXIX. To the veterans, well, maybe you need a horseshoe or something. ;)

My door is always open to anyone who has an idea or a complaint. If you don’t want to post it here, I encourage you to TG me. Once again, thanks to the many people who have helped me make this a success and I hope that everyone, win or lose, had as good a time as I did.

PS: If there’s anyone who would like to scorinate my games for the rest of the tournament, now is the time to step forward. :) TG me your e-mail and I’ll send you the spreadsheet.

"Dammit, ye bastids," the Coach yelled, "We got the Zehr-Gay Visceral-hotrod-chevvy's Awesomeist Name Award fir the first half, which was absolutely greet!"

Dimrill Barazinbar ducked as a few pieces of screwed up paper and a handful of hockey gloves were thrown at him.

"But!" the coach continued, "only saecond in the award named after some crazy miner, ye lazy bastids! Four more goals and we would have won that too. I hate ye all!"

Haztarr sat in his chair and sobbed for a few moments. Then his eyes rested on the seedings for the next round.

"We're at t'top! We fookin' rule!" Haztarr got up of the chair and started dancing. "A bye week and a match agin' Sarzonia or the Vilitan scum! Excellent!"

It's probably best to leave our bi-polar Dwarven coach at this point, as the marauding peaks and troughs of the poor Dwarf's condition lend well to comedy, but are partly responsilbe for the de-humanisation of the differently-abled. But, then again, he's not even a human! Wa-hey!

Actual Interest in cup after success.

After FLP's success in qualifying for the main section of the tournament, as well as being the most successful rookie team at this stage, a flock of news teams have swept across the nation of Iansisle to cover the rest of the tournament.

This sudden interest will put pressure on the players and many fear this will lead to an exit in their next match. Until the next set of matches have been played it is unknown who the next opponent will be, but the pressure is now on as the tournement proper gets underway. Either way, with this interest FLP will be back for Cherry cup IX.

Blizzards ready for knockouts, 'Icy' rematch

The match against Idealista was a lot closer than Sarzonian national ice hockey team Coach Harold Clark wanted, but the result was what he was looking for. The Blizzards defeated Idealista 3-2 to clinch a berth in the second round of the eighth Cherry Cup. The Blizzards earned the eighth seed in the tournament and face ninth seeded Vilita for the third time.

"That's the breaks, I guess," Clark said. "We weren't happy with the way we played this game, but we'll take the two points and the berth in the next round."

The Blizzards (5-3-4, 14 points, second place Group 3) earned the higher seed over the Ice Cats thanks to a better goal differential (plus 3 versus plus 2), but the Ice Cats have the edge in the series, winning 2-1 in the most recent meeting and earning a 3-3 tie the first time the teams played in the tournament. Watching practice may remind some of the old saying 'familiarity breeds contempt.'

"We don't like those bastards," defenseman Kevin Dewey said. "We want to knock them off their [expletive deleted] perch."

"I don't have anything good to say about that team," right winger Mike Ridley said. "Nothing. And you can print that for all I care."

The Blizzards hit each other at the practice facility with a ferocity that rivaled some of their most intense games, especially after reading the host country's predictions that Vilita would beat the Blizzards.

"We've got something to prove," goalie Brian Snow said. "And it begins tonight."

A heated argument

The secret of the inexplicable success of the Brazillico Ice Bats is revealed! The tropical terrors are poaching players from cooler climes. Viz, us!

Thatzrite. In their fervent fervour fer victory, Brazillico has brought in rowdy ringers. Feisty foreigners. Ice-warrior immigrants. Yeah, you read it here first: at least three Ice Bats players are not from Brazillico at all.

Our roving reporters can reveal EXCLUSIVELY that Ignacio Connor was actually born in the village of Santa Cruz de Loco Bisha, which is located 500 metres on OUR side of the Brazillico-Tanah Burung border. And as everyone knows, the folks in Brazillico may be pretty decent footballers, but they can't play hockey.

Everyone knows the onyl tropical hockey power is Tanah Burung. So it only makes sense: Connor's a Burungi, born and bred. Hand him over, we sez.

But it's ok.

Everybody knows...
it hurts to grow up.
And everybody knows...
don't ever give up.

(silence)

Captain Kyle Thomas made a brief comment in an interview just a few minutes ago. "No one seems to care, no one knows how bad Hockey Canada wanted to be in the top 10 in this Cherry Cup. All I can say is this, when we play in Cherry Cup IX, we will no longer be rookies. No longer unknown to the world. Our government may be a mystery, as long as what goes on inside our borders, but I'm going to let a little secret out to those wondering. We are going to show up at the next Cherry Cup, and win it all!" A fist was raised as a cheer went up in the boardroom where the interview was taking place, several teams still in the tournement could hear it from their hotel rooms. They knew they had another opponent coming for them.

All those nations who thought they could walk all over us in the prelims take note. Cherry Cup IX will belong to Hockey Canada and Cherry Cup X! and so on and so fourth...

Last night, the players for Hockey Canada were outside the Hotel singing a song about the so called "LOCKOUT" that kept them out of the NHL this year:

This isn’t how it’s supposed to be
A winter without hockey
Is like a beer fridge without any beer
It’s just so empty and cold
Because our season was stole(n)
For reasons that are not very clear

Well the players don’t want no salary cap
The owners all cry, “we’re poor!”
But it’s hard to feel sorry for either sob story
When I can’t even afford tickets anymore

Chorus: So shut the puck up
Bring back our game
All you owners and players do
Is whine and complain
Hey if you can’t make ends meet
On all the money you earn
Then you should get out of hockey
And give someone else a turn
And shut the puck up

For years my wife and me
Watched the hockey on TV
And got it on as much as we could
Yes every Saturday night
I’d put my helmet on tight
And give her “two minutes for looking so good”
But now I don’t get no action
My wife she’s never in the mood
And I just don’t get the same satisfaction
Out of watching Jeopardy in the nude

Chorus: So shut the puck up
Enough is enough
Why don’t you try digging ditches
If you think your jobs are so tough
Or try teaching a classroom
Or saving a life
Or if you really want tough
Take a body check from my wife
And shut the puck up

From the diehard fans to the concession stands
To the sports bars – they’re all out of luck
Yes the business is down in every hockey town
Mon ami - this lockout she suck!
But it don’t stop there you bunch of greedy millionaires
Oh no - it’s much worse than you think
This year my friend Tony has to drive his Zamboni
On the ice on my backyard rink

Chorus: So shut the puck up
Don’t get your nose out of joint
And throw away the whole season
Just so you can make a point
You know that sooner or later
Both sides will have to agree
It’s like a rectal exam - get it over with quickly

And shut the puck up
We all miss our teams
You’ve turned out the lights
On every Hockey Canadian's dreams
Call it a strike or a lockout
Call it what you wish
I call it a kick in the ass to the fans who made you rich
So SHUT THE PUCK UP!

Yes "SHUT THE PUCK UP" was the motto tonight... and it was a fitting one, because the players could go back to the teams they play for, but they can't thanks to overpriced all-stars and billionaire owners.

SHUT THE PUCK UP!

((All I can say is sorry, Sarzonia. I hoped that after offering to help me scorinate, the random number gods might at least smile upon you - good luck karma or something. :(

Ice Cats Advance, Ready for Starblaydia

-------------------River Suzgar shined in a strong performance by the Vilita Ice Cats who downed Sarzonia once again in a one-sided regional rivalry that will now shift North to Starblaydia for the Cherry Cup Quarter Final. The winners of the Starblaydia-Vilita matchup will be certainly favored to win their Semi-Final and advance to the Cherry Cup Final. From there it will be a fierce battle for the teams for the title.

-------------------The Vilita Ice Cats have a history of success against their starblaydian foes, having upset the Starblaydians when they had been defending Cherry Cup Champions and the Vilitans were rookies to the Cherry Cup scene. The teams have not met recently, being drawn in opposite groups in the Atlantian Oceania Regional Championships, but Vilita will be more than ready to extend their success and bring home the Cherry Cup to Vilita for the first time, shutting the hell up all those Starblaydians who think they are better in the sport just because they won the damn thing a million years ago. What better way than to knock them out on the way to the title?

On the news:

After an intensely close match in the first round between Frozcheva and Oliverry, FLP's opponents in the final 8 will be fellow newcomers Frozcheva.

This will boost morale within the FLP squad as they had feared facing a high ranked team. Victory is not even close to being assured but FLP will go into the match, helds held high and, in the words of the team captain, "Give it all we've got". Whichever team emerges the victor it will result in atleast one rookie progressing to the Cherry cup semis.

Even a loss would not dishearten the team. Reaching the last 8 will provide FLP with a seed in the next competition, having shown what they can do.

For those who have no interest in hockey, and are annoyed at it being our top story, we have tales of men getting killed, women giving birth to mutants, and children forced to ply various trades coming shortly.

Deep in the heart of the City of Quiet Fire, Karak D'Ragh, home to the Dwarves of Starblaydia, a human steps through the catacombs of the Hall of Sports, guided by to ancient, near-blind dwarves. Through the brazier-lit chambers he is guided, to a room of almost holy significance. The room containing the Book of Grudges. A huge leather-bound tome, enscribed with ancient glyphs and symbols, listing all the insults ever committed against Dwarven teams in Sport. Going back to the earliest days, when Dwarf met Dwarf in unarmed combat.

Set on a pedestal, with a high chair behind it, and a wan light illuminating it from above, the guides show that to the human.

"Lord Rikaard," one says, "here is the Great Book of Sporting Grudges, containing every insult committed against-"

"Yes, Gharzin," the Starblaydi Minister for Sport said, "you've told me this three times already."

"I have? My apologies, it just seems right to introduce you to the Great Book."

"Why are you showing me this?"

"The Vilitan press has been containing many..." the Dwarf searched for a word, "inflammatory remarks, recently. We are therefore placing an entry about the Vilitan Ice Hockey team into the Great Book."

"If we needed a page in a book for every time they insulted us," Rikaard explained, "we'd need a heckuva lot bigger book than that."

"Oh really?" The Dwarf whispered to his companion. "You may consider the upcoming Quarter-Final match to be a question of Starblaydi honour. We are all one big family, you know."

"My thanks, Gharzin," Rikaard offered his hand, which was duely shook, "I look forward to watching the game."

"They going down," Gharzin said, with a wink.

As a token of her good mood, the President declares that Greenland is no longer at war with Iansisle. Rejoice! Yeah, that means you, kid! Rejoice, or the President may not be happy. Gulls Freeze Their Way Past Ice Bats
"Check it out," say Brazillico players in Ianapalis, "Water freezes outside here, too!"

IANAPALIS, Iansisle -- Sports fans, more than a hundred thousand of whom crouded around the Ianapalis Sports Arena in sub-freezing weather to listen to a broadcast of the Iansisle-Brazillico match, were treated to an unexpected delight: the Gulls breezed through their first round match.

Ageless forward Martin St Amour scored the Gulls' first goal during a power play in the first seven minutes, and the team never looked back.

As usual, Steve Martinson's club played a very physical and brutally offensive game, entrusting the defense to human wall Sergei Naumov. The Ice Bats - who, with a few exceptions, still have trouble skating in a straight line - were caught unawares and only managed a third-period power play goal.

Iansisle - Cherry Cup VII champions - will advance to play Tanah Burung - Cherry Cup VI champions - in a quarterfinals match adjudicated by Sarzonian officials. A solid victory against Brazillico has given the team a certain amount of confidence when facing tropical teams, but team captain B.J. MacPherson refuses to call it hubris.

"We know that we'll give 'em a good run for their money, but no man is setting down his stick just yet," said MacPherson after the game.

Finally, finally, Coach Haztarr wwas proud of his boys. They'd completely destroyed Kalaallit Nunaat in what must be one of the most one-sided Semi-Finals that this below-zero sport had ever seen.

But! Have Starblaydia peaked too soon? Can they carry this result into the final, a repeat of the Cherry Cup 5 Final Series, which Starblaydia won 4 games to 3? Tanah Burung have certainly been one of the most dominating teams in recent Cherry Cup history, but Starblaydia's most recent performance suggests that the short, stocky, bearded boys weilding hammers, axes and hockey sticks can overcome their opponents and take home the Don Cherry Cup to Starblaydia for the second time.

Starblaydia 7 - 0 Kalaallit Nunaat*

oh, there will be hell to pay!

Lance A. Comte, the new Greenland Commissioner of Hockey, started to enter an official protest. Obviously the Iansisle officials had been preparing this fowl and low blow all along. It was unfair, unfair, unfair. The Red and White Iceberg was supposed to lose int he finals, not the smei-finals. And certainly not by such a crushing score.

But as he entered the protest and got ready to send it in, a bony and ice-cold hand touched his arm. It sent chills through his whole body. It was Susan Aglukark, President for Life, Supreme Commander of the Legions of the Ice Warriors.

"A protest? Nowhere near enough," she said. "There must be blood. There must be a reckoning."

And so the word went out through the land:

By order of the President, dwarven races are banned from Kalaallit Nunaat. All men under the height of 5 feet, and all women under the height of 4 feet 6 inches, are to report immediately to designated camps for stretching therapy on the rack. Those who do not respond to therapy will have their leg boens removed and replaced with height-enhancing skeletal forms. Those refusing shall be executed immediately. Death to the dwarves! "Good Morning, I'm Trey Pickworth. The I.A.M.D.P.V.C. - International Alliance of Midgets, Dwarves and People of Vertical Challenges - 'Bereft of a snappy acronym since 1954' - have condemed what they see as outrageous behaviour on the paart of the Kalaallit Nunaat government in forcing anyone matching the description of 'short-arse' to undergo horrific streching therapy. Jose Condilla, just four feet two, joins me now. Jose, you're just a short angry man, aren't you?"

"No!" Jose yelled, a helluva way to introduce yourself on national TV. "That is blatant heightism! I'm not bloody angry! I'm furious!"

"Ok, ok, I apologise," Trey smiled, "I'm used to talking down to people - I'm a newsreader."

"Right!" Jose lowered his voice, slightly. "We at the I.A.M.D.P., uh, V.C, are totally outraged at the Kazaa Nun's behaviour! An all-female religious sect of illegal downloaders shouldn't be allowed to do this!"

"Um, did you actually read, hear or see anything pertaining to this topic before you came into the studio?"

"No! I was completely un-briefed!" Jose threw his arms up into the air. "Yet more examples of anti-small-people behaviour!"

"You really are just an angry little man, aren't you?"

"Yes! I mean, no... heightist!" He stood on his chair and jumped around

"Can someone switch his mic off, please?" Trey looked into the camera for a moment, and Jose was silenced apart from the muffled shouting that Trey's mic picked up. "That's great. Security!"

7-0 kickedassesinsideout unearths haunting memories in RL for Belarus.

Something similar to KN's loss in RL has been remembered... especially by Canadians like myself. At the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Canada crushed Belarus 7-2 in the Semis, before going on to defeat the US 5-2 int eh Gold Medal Final. Could Starblaydia's win give them momentum heading toweards the final? Only time (or the game) will tell.

A hard-fought win over Iansisle was followed by an even more challenging match which saw the Cassowaries notch a 2-1 victory against Frozcheva in front of a crowd that could generously be desribed as "unfriendly." Fortunately Tanah Burung's finest had taken their happy pills and the jeers slid off their well-oiled skins.

Moment of the match: Esmeralda's diving wrist-shot off the rebound which narrowly evaded the Frozchevan goalie's glove. In a match that could have gone either way, it sealed the win for Tanah Burung and will be shown on highlight reels for years to come. At least in Esmeralda's home town, where locals will recognize it as the same move usually made to catch a wild pig in heat.

Next up: Starblaydia, coming off a devastating triumph over tournament favourites Kalaallit Nunaat. These two sides have met in the final before, when the upstarts won a 4-3 series win in a tournament that may, or may not, have actually occurred. Now both sides are veterans and former champions bidding to be the first team to win a second Cherry Cup. A lot is on the line.

Biggest challenge: "Well, we can't bodycheck the little f---ers," said Octavianus, a powerhouse for the Cassowaries on left wing. "And it wouldn't be sporting to kick them in the face, of course. Hey, are you sure they're dwarves and not tiny hallucinations?"

Cherry Cup VIII Finals!

Starblaydia 4 - 3 Tanah Burung
(Tied 2-2 after 4 periods; Starblaydia wins 2-1 in shootout)

What an exciting match! The crowd got to see just what they wanted - a Tanah Burung loss to salve the Gulls' pride - but were very disappointed when Starblaydia ended up winning.

"Damn it, I can too have my cake and eat it!" insisted one sour Gulls fan. "I still can't see how Tanah Burung losing means that Starblaydia has to win - it's all the ref's fault if you ask me."

Gulls officials then conceded that, seeing as Tanah Burung had already won a Cherry Cup, maybe it would be nice to let Starblaydia win their first.

Congratulations to Starblaydia: Cherry Cup VIII Champions!
Now they've won as many as we have!

Rayzors Go All The Way, Baby! Again!
Hockey Stick declared to be a 'new national weapon, uh, I mean symbol!' of Dwarven peoples

"They did it, They did it!"

Thorin Nibin, Captain and Star Winger of the Starblaydia team, lifted the blood-spattered Don Cherry Cup low above his head (let's face it, he's a Dwarf, and 'high' doesnt get used in the same sentence) minutes after the speed-engraver had engraved 'Starblaydia' onto it for the second time in four years.

Not a single human was involved in this team, except for Minister for Sport Lord Rikaard Van Honjik who turned up at the final to have a photo-op with the winning team. Though the Dwarves have made a few mortal enemies along the way, their hard and fast style of play has won many friends in the Ice Hockey world.

With skates overcoming their natural athletic defficencies, the natural power and agression of the Dwarven race has proved to be all-conquering in the Eighth Memorial Don Cherry Cup. Though, the question now is, can Starblaydia only win a Cherry Cup when they face Tanah Burung by scoring at the last possible moment? And frankly, who cares? We're Cherry Cup Champions for the second time!

And lo, somewhere deep in the heart of Karak D'ragh, the City of Quiet Fire, upon the Wall of Honour, beside the crossed axes, crossed hammers and severed Troll heads, a new item was placed amongst the heralded items of yore. The mask and crossed Hockey Sticks of Dagnir Tumunzahar, the Goalie who saved in the final shootout to crown Starblaydia two-time World Champions.

And Coach Haztarr? In the still photos they make at the end of the hit movie, saying what happened to the main characters after the movie ended, what will it say about him? Well, you'll just have to find out in the next few years of the Cherry Cup, won't you?
