“Good evening. I’m Lüret Sun and you’re watching Edölia Today. The Impërator Erik von Blätterschplitt spoke today at Scarlet Hall in the Imperial Palace in front of an assembly of reporters.”
An old man stands in front of a podium, what is left of his white hair hangs off in all directions and age spots accentuate his shiny, oily forehead. His voice is raspy and harsh, but still holds a spark of energy and vigor.
“The time has come,” he speaks, “for the Scarlet Empire to leave the old, UnAPS mentality, and for us to recognize that the region of Haven is no longer the peaceful and stable place that it once was. No longer do we have legions of allies to flock to our call in case of war, and in some instances, these former allies could be those that we are fighting. Edölia is strong, comrades. Edölia is strong indeed. Our economy is booming like never before. All of our citizens have roofs over their heads and food on their tables. An efficient transport system keeps all of the Empire’s districts together. Our nation is more democratic than ever before. Yes, Edölia is strong.” The man pauses for emphasis. “But Edölia is not mighty. For too long have we relied on our allies, the Cats, the Scandavians, the Hattians, the Islanders and all the others to protect us in case of war. Our navy is weak, our air force is small and our army, our once proud and mighty army, is years behind those of our neighbors.”
“The Impërator went on to outline his plans for the future of the Scarlet Forces, including an increase in overall spending from $3.1 trillion to $5.7 trillion a year over the course of the next five years. The build-up will include an initial increase in the number of military factories in the Scarlet Empire, as well as extensive modernization upgrades to existing facilities. The large shipyards, of Gërburg, many of which have recently been leased by foreign nations for their own projects, are to be immediately appropriated by the Edolian government for a massive increase in ship numbers, including the construction of five Doujin-S class dreadnaughts, doubling the number of dreadnaughts in the Scarlet Armada. The Impërator declined to comment on further improvements to the Edolian military structure, although an aide stated that a large amount of restructuring would take place over the next few years.
A number of military experts have speculated that the speech marks an end to Edolian near isolationism on the world scene and that the Scarlet Empire will begin to take a more active role in the world. This could have consequences for the future, although as of yet, what it will mean is yet to be seen.”
