“Good evening. This is Lüret Sun and you’re watching Edölia Today. Chancellor Rosaura von Grönbouler spoke at a press conference today, outlining her plans for the next two years. Although it has been six months since she took office as head of Parliament, this marks her first public conference to address her plans. Speaking in front of the press today, the Chancellor said that the two main issues upon which she would base her leadership were a reform of regulations placed on foreign businesses operating within the Scarlet Empire, and a ban on the consumption of opium-based products, which are legal in all but one of Edölia’s five districts. Both issues are highly controversial, but the Chancellor hopes to be able to muster enough support among members of Parliament to see the changes made.

“In the past, efforts to cement a political agenda have been hampered due to a lack of support among most strong political parties in Edölia. The pick of the moderate Socialist Party member as Chancellor was viewed as a compromise between Imperial and Anti-Imperial coalitions, both wishing to keep the other from power and hoping to deadlock Parliament until the next elections, when a majority coalition could be formed. Sources close to the Chancellor say that she has been struggling to find issues that she could work with, but until now, has had little hope of seeing her ideas endorsed by a majority of Edolian lawmakers.

“The Chancellor’s announcement today was met with strong reactions from Parliament. Although her measures are strongly supported by her own Socialist Party, which controls 13.1% of the seats, opinion is divided among the rest of the parties, and few MPs support both policies. Von Grönbouler also suggested that she would push the opium bill first and expressed optimism as to its chances.

“Shortly after the press conference, an aide to the Chancellor attempted to calm fears raised by many MPs that such an opium bill would endanger Edölia’s large opium agricultural business by assuring reporters that the Empire’s narcotics export sector would not be harmed by the plan.

“The Impërator of Edölia, who holds veto power over all decisions made by Parliament, declined to give a personal opinion on either of the ideas and said that he would remain neutral.”

“Good evening. I’m Lüret Sun and you’re watching Edölia Today. Chancellor Rosaura von Grönbouler went in front of Parliament today to submit a draft of the new Opium Bill, which has, in recent days, become the center of her political focus. The bill, which calls for a gradual phase-out of government sales of opium and opium products within the Scarlet Empire, has the wide support of MPs from the Socialist, Green and Christian-Capitalist parties but has mixed support outside of that base. The Chancellor’s bill also calls for changes in Edölia’s foreign narcotics export sector, which currently is involved in illegal smuggling operations around the world. In a brief address to reporters, she said that the EdoNarc government corporation was giving the Scarlet Empire a bad name and that the time had come to begin the elimination of government-sponsored smuggling.

“The statement by the Chancellor has caused a massive outcry among many MPs from a wide range of different political parties. The Freedom Party leadership, which has long pushed for a complete privatization of EdoNarc, has made it clear that they will not actively oppose the bill except to vote against it. The Libertarian Socialists have also strongly condemned the bill and have pledged to work against it in any way necessary. The largest amount of support, however, seems to be coming from members of the Imperial Party and the National Socialists, whose party leadership is split and whose MPs will most likely be similarly divided.”
