A limo snaked through the streets of Dancing Penguin. All the windows were open and the driver turned the AC up before casting an exasperated glance at the passenger in the seat next to him. Alfred Black nodded to the driver and shrugged, there was nothing he could do. He turned and looked back at the girl in back.

“You don’t need to be so nervous.”

“I’m not nervous,” the girl indignantly replied. The limo turned onto a dirt road. Through the trees one could see a massive building. The limo passed through an iron gate bearing the letters “DPAEH” and entered the huge circular driveway along with many other cars and buses.

------------------------------------------------------------
Corby Black sat on the front steps of the mighty school. He smiled and stood as he saw the limo pull up. As the driver opened the back door, Corby hurried over. Out of the limo stepped a strawberry blond haired girl with cool blue eyes. Corby took a step back and raised an eyebrow as a wave of heat cascaded from the open door.

“A little nervous aren’t we, Haley?” The red head rolled her eyes as the driver unpacked her bags from the trunk and set them on the curb. Alfred caught Corby’s eye and beckoned him to the limo window. “What is it, father?”

Alfred put a hand on Corby’s shoulder and spoke in a harsh whisper. “Keep out of trouble and watch your sister. The only reason we let her come is because you were so insistent that you could help her." Alfred's tone softened, "You make certain to keep safe, okay?” Corby caught something in the man’s gaze.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

“Nothing you need to worry about.” With that, Alfred closed the window and the limo drove off. Corby turned to his sister.

“What was that about?”

“Usual pep talk,” Corby chuckled slightly. “Listen, it’s about noon now, which means we have about five hours before dinner and the opening assembly. Lets get your stuff off the curb and see if we can’t introduce you to anyone.” Haley nodded and the two began to move the numerous suitcases onto the lawn.

Josh stepped through the large, ornate doors. The "things" that ran this school claimed that they were antique doors actually used in the kremlin. Josh had proved that they were at least £2.99 from a local car boot sale. That incident had caused him to be wildly unpopular with the staff. No matter, he knew everything they taught him already. He used this place as a retreat, a place to invent more things.

He looked back and saw darkfist approaching him. Josh had been coming to this school as long as Darkfist but had never made any actual friends. He held the door open for them, politely nodding.

"Hello Corby, how are you doing." Josh used the real names of all his fellow pupils. "And this." He said eyeing Haley "Must be your sister."

"Yes, this is my sister Haley." Corby smiled, for siblings they certainly looked nothing alike. Haley had strawberry hair and blue eyes which sharply contrasted to Corby's hazel eyes and black hair. Noticing Josh was still staring at Haley, he cleared his throat loudly.

"Haley this is-" He stopped for a moment. "I'm sorry, I don't believe I remember your name."

"Josh Tarren, or as I'm more affectionately known, brainbox." Josh looked at Corby whispering. "Meet me in the library at four o clock-" He whispered more silently, "It's about the enforcer squads and some-" Josh had a look of desperation on his face.

"Goodbye, I'll see you later." Josh walked off, down a corridor and started going to his room.

OOC:
Just a note, Josh is extremely paranoid. He has been betrayed so many times by his "friends" that he finds it hard to trust people....

Cassandra Depsan, more affectionately known as Cassie, stood in her room, unpacking her suitcase. She ran a hand through her long dark brown hair, cursing her parents again for sending her here. Just because she had a special ability didn't mean she needed to be treated like a freak. She sighed as she finished unpacking, then stepped out of the room.

She strolled around the campus, looking for someone who looked like they would eb able to hold some sort of converstation other than "Hey, look at my cool powers, dont the rock!?!?" She moved gracefully in the tight fitting shirt and jeans that showed off her figure. She didn't have the same ability to talk to people like she did with computers. They actually required work to communicate with. Showing off ones...assets...usually helped ease the situation.

Josh Tarren stood near a tree, reading a book, the Multiple choices of advanced trigonometry. He had an experiment set up, it consisted of what looked like a ballista and an actual house, built by Josh himself, using an advanced technique that involved solidified cardboard and the compound magnesium oxide. He was muttering insructions to himself, and corresponding them to the ballista. The missile in the ballista resembled a small, thin piece of iron, coated in some kind of liquid. Finally, Josh finished the diagrams, aimed the ballista at the hastily-constructed "house", drew the string back and fired it.

The ballista bolt lept through the air, setting on fire, the friction igniting it. It powered forward, then collided with the house.

Bang!

The power flung Josh to the floor, the tree next to him had been uprooted and charred. The house itself was a tangled mess of steel and girders. The house was still on fire, but it put itself out, quickly. He nodded in agreement to himself, and made a hasty note in his diary to minimize the bolt size. noticing Cassie, he drew himself up.

He approached her, slowly walking. "So what do you think? Good eh? My name is Josh, Josh Tarren, and yours?"

Artemis came out of the back of the school, eager to get some fresh air and to get away from those annoying ‘My powers are SO much better than yours’ children. He scanned the chain-linked encampment, his aquatic-blue eyes catching every little detail. Off in one corner he saw 2 kids already fighting. It hasn’t even been assembly time yet, he thought to himself.

Shaking his head, he glanced over to the right to see 2 people chatting near a charred log. He recognized Josh, not only from his reputation for outsmarting and correcting the instructors on many occasions, but for his friendship with Corby. Artemis bowed his head, pausing for a second to reflect on the happenings of last year when it almost seemed certain that he’d be sent back to his parents in Mayve. It seemed strange that he hadn’t seen an Enforcer Squad yet. They must have taken a moment of silence for Emily’s death.

Artemis looked back up, this time observing Josh’s companion. Josh’s got a girlfriend? he thought, until he noticed her tight clothing. I wonder what she plans to accomplish with that? Oh well her decision.

He turned to walk away when he spotted him.

On the other side of the chain-link fence stood the old man. He hadn’t seen him since he was 14 when he handed him the pamphlet in Mayve. He took 2 steps toward the man when suddenly he just vanished, leaving Artemis to stare and wonder: What the heck is he doing here?

Corby was helping his sister get her stuff taken to her room when the announcement came over the loud speakers:

Corby Black to the office.

"Probably about my teaching," he told Haley, causing more than a few people to look up in surprise. Shrugging he hurried down the hall.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Mr. Black," Mr. Ransburn, the Principal, was a portly man with slick black hair. "It is against my better judgment that I let you teach a class. However, as it is only a control course, I doubt you can do any damage." He handed Corby a sheet of paper. "This is your class list."

Class Type: Control Course
Period: A
Teacher: Mr. Corby Black

Black, Haley
Depsan, Cassandra
Orwitz, Jonathan
Rolasson, Artemis
Savetri, Aron
"Steel"
Tarren, Josh
Tyren, Thomas

Corby only recognized some of the names, however he thanked Mr. Ransburn and left the office.

Jonathan Orwitz unpacked his stuff and walked into the courtyard. He watched as the people milled about showing off their powers. He decided to delve into their thoughts. Ah, they are trying to look cool by showing their powers off and want some respect. If they really wanted respect they stop acting so childish. He wandered some more and caught a person send a missile into a house. He laughed and walked around again waiting until the assembly and dinner.

Aron, running late from home due to traffic and just getting up too late finally finished unpacking his things, and decided to jump in on trying to meet people since he'd already lost a lot of time on that. As he was stepping outside he heard an enormous boom, but couldn't see where it came from. After turning the corner, he saw a burning house, and just shook his head as he figured out what happened. He noticed another person walking near the "house" and thought, "Well, here goes."

Corby Black to the office.

Hearing the intercom finally snapped Artemis out of his train of thought. He shrugged, sure if the old man wanted him, he'd turn up again sooner or later.

He checked his watch, and sighed. He didn't want to believe that all of his friends had bailed out of DPAEH after Emily's death. Scared off that there would be another murder. But they were supposed to meet 5 min ago. Here. Where Artemis was standing.

Oh well. I guess I gotta meet and mingle.

He quickly looked around, his short, bleached-blue hair moving slightly as he turned. He spotted 2 juniors who looked both mature and his age. This looks promising, he thought, as he approached, hearing one of the guys introduce himself as 'Aron'.

His arrival went unnoticed, save for the school administrator that had beem patiently waiting for him. The young man stood there silently as his handler, Maxlin Finstadt, finalized the arrangements, handing the school official a number of envelopes. Once that was done, the man turned around and walked back to where the new student waited, patient and unmoving, as if a statue.

"Alright m'boy, yer in good hands. I'll be checking in on a regular basis, but if you need anything, you know how to reach me." Max looked up, trying to catch some reaction or emotion from him, but as usual, he was silent. He liked the kid, and had known him since he first arrived in the compound. Though he still felt awe and wonderment when he watched the kid bench-press a 30 ton weight, in the end, he was just a kid. A kid that had seen too much, too early. Hopefully, this school would provide him with a normal life that he had never known. Well, as normal a life as you can have when you are made of organic, nigh invulnerable metallic flesh with unmeasurable strength and endurance.

As he turned to leave, Max smiled up at the boy. He was going to miss him, and he didn't think it was in the company's best interest to lose an operative with as much potential as this massive young man. The man who paid Max's salary thought differently though, and that was why he now found himself saying goodbye to a person he had come to care for. Nodding, he turned and walked away, only to turn suddenly and hurry back.

"Oops, almost forgot this..." Max slapped a sticker onto the young man's barrel chest. "Take care of yerself, kiddo." he said, turning and leaving for the last time. The sticker said simply: Hello. My name is Steel.

The young man called "Steel" waited patiently for the school administrator to lead him to his new future.

Thus far, Thomas had not noticed the newcomer, in fact he had not really noticed much of anything so far today - including mealtimes, fellow students or teachers. There was only one thing that was really taking up in interest at the moment, and that the large block of marble in front of him. He was working in the open air on a new sculpture that he was doing for his art classes, extra art classes and additional art classes - he liked art, and did not really do much else in the way of classwork.

The head had asked him to do this piece as the school grounds were looking bare - mind you, there weren't really much in the way of school grounds, but he was happy to do it anyway. Things that made the head happy with him, and thus got him out of other classes, always contented Thomas. He grinned as he thought of the head boasting about having a Tyren sculpture in his school - his seemingly-impossible work was rapidly becoming popular among the higher echelons of society, often shown off by CEOs of businesses and the like.

The money was welcome, of course, but Thomas was not really all that concerned about it. The sculpture was what fascinated him. So far this piece was turning out well. He changed carelessly into Etherealism, reached inside the marble and started hollowing out a section with his tools. This would be one of his better pieces, he was sure.

Artemis should have seen that one coming.

He'd spotted Josh earlier but had thought nothing of it. He was sure that he'd avoid Artemis. Such thought was Artemis' mistake, for the next time he had spotted Josh, he was right on top of him. Artemis tried to move at the last possible second, but it was too late.

[insert human on human collision sound here]

Josh had hit Artemis virtually head-on. The impact made the 5'9" 125 pound Artemis clip Aron on the way down It all happened so fast that Artemis didn't have enough time to use his powers to save himself.

THUD

He had the worse end of the impact, and that was noted in the crash. Artemis was dazed and he'd developed a splitting headache. The first thing he realized was that he was face-up and his back was aching as well. The second thing he realized was that he couldn't breathe...

For a few minutes after Maxlin had left, the administrator simply looked at Steel, wondering if the tall young man was even alive. He was well over six feet tall, and had an incredibly muscled physique. He wore only a pair of biking shorts, and a tank-top. His metallic skin and lack of movement made him look like a glorious, shining statue. Steel returned his gaze, unblinking.

"Well son, I guess we should get you to the library, where we can pick-up your class assignments...ummm, follow me?"

The small administrator turned and started walking towards the school, and Steel fell into step behind him. They entered the school, walking briskly down a long hall, turning a corner in time to see two young man slam into each other accidently, both tumbling to the ground in a comical heap. They say when you're about to die, your life flashes before your eyes. Some near-death survivors have given accounts that they see themselves running down a long white hallway, and at the end of that hall, there is an enormous white light.

Artemis hadn't seen that particular white light yet, nor did he want to. All around him was mass confusion and painic. For the second time in his life he thought he wasn't going to make it.

I've cheated death once. I can do it again. I hope...

His mind was racing. He still couldn't breathe. All around him he heard various voices. One boy was screaming for help. A girl with a worried voice was saying: "Are you guys okay?" It was getting hot. An adult, sounded a tad like the school administrator, was kneeling over Josh. Or was that Josh? Artemis couldn't see that far down. Come to think of it, he couldn't really see that far in any direction. Not with that blackness surrounding his line of sight. It was cooling down in the hall n--

Artemis was losing consciousness, the blackness now gaining ground. Off in the distance he heard someone cough. Or was that him? It was him! He must have just been winded. As he watched the unfolding drama in the corridor, Steel felt very detached, and very much alone, a state he was used to in his earlier life, but one that he had forgotten since he had been rescued and adopted by his pseudo-father, Darius Steele. He had no name when he was found, and used "Steel" to show honor to the man who had saved him.

He saw that there was really nothing for him to do here, so he slipped silently by, moving towards the library to pick up his class and dormitory assignments. He hoped he had his own room, but feared he would be billeted with some other student. He would deal with that as he dealt with all things in his life: facing it head-on.

As he walked into the library, he hoped that there were some girls in the school...he had just begun to discover the soft creatures, and exploring their strangeness was becoming very important to him. As he entered the library, he felt the room grow quiet, even for a library, and all eyes turned to look at him. He let the stares caress him, unmoving except for some slight flexing of his massive arms and shoulders. Let them look, he thought to himself....he had grown used to feeling like a strange outcast. He prayed that it would be different here, but doubt was creeping back into his thoughts.

At the sound of her voice, Steel looked down at the young woman...the very attractive young woman, he noted. Before he had a chance to react, she began lecturing the gawkers in the library. She was...standing up for him? A warm feeling flowed through the large young man, and his heart skipped a beat with emotion. Not many people cared enough to do this for him, let alone a complete stranger. He stared at her, wondering just who this guardian angel was. He watched the targets of her wrath as she harangued them, and was satisfied to see they looked sufficiantly ashamed.

When she put out her hand, he tentatively took it in his own, his huge fingers dwarfing her own. He held it with the utmost gentleness, like an injured bird. Steel had learned early how to control and restrain his great strength, though it wasn't always easy. Her small hand was soft and warm, but her grip was firm and proud. She had called herself 'Cassie', and at this moment it was the sweetest name in the world. With his free hand, he pointed to his own nametag, tapping it for emphasis.

Cassie nodded. "Right then. I think its this way," she said, leading Steal down a coridor towards where she believed the cafeteria was.

Dinner will start in five minutes. All students should report to the cafeteria.

Haley smiled slightly at the announcement and followed the steady streams of people to her meal.

Corby had looked up, intrigued, at the exchange in the doorway. Now he stood and exited the library. He hear a faint twang and looked down. There, quivering in the tile by his feet, was a black rose. Corby bent down and plucked it from the floor, carefully avoiding its abnormally large thorns. There was a strange familiarity to it and it didn't take Corby long to figure out why: it was made of the same shadow energy he used. The flower was, however, much denser than anything he had managed to create. The rose wilted in his hand, its petals drifting to the floor where they faded to a thin black mist. Corby looked up in time to see what may have been the shadow of someone darting around the corner. He started to follow, but his stomach advised him to reconsider. With a shrug, he headed for the cafeteria.

OOC:
Sorry, had some rl probs....

I.C:
Josh had been horrifically injured, more so than Artemis. If anyone had looked closely, then they would have noticed a slight anomaly in Josh's legs. They had been bent backwards, the pain excruciating. Josh did the only thing that he could, pass out....

ooc: Wait, how did your legs get bent backwards from a mere person to person collision? Sorry guys, but your accident has turned into little more than an argument over whose character is injured worse. Also, I'd like to get the plot rolling. Hope no one's offended.
IC:
"Excuse me," a woman pressed past the teacher who had done little more than look dumbfounded. Faith, for this was the woman's name, was a petite blond with deep brown eyes.

"Oop, sorry Faith," the teacher stepped back as Faith knelt down and pressed a hand to each of the boys' chests. Taking a deep breath, she hummed a single soothing note. Her hands took on a dull golden glow as her healing power swept threw the boys. Finished, she waited for the boys to wake up.

ooc: Thanks DP! Now I don't have to do some random cameo...

IC:

Wake up Artemis.

Artemis' eyes flew open at the sound of what he interpreted to be a siren*. A young petitie woman was kneeling over him, with a pleasureable smile and one hand on his chest. As she withdrew it, she pulled Artemis with it. It just like Artemis was stuck to it. When they were both fully standing, Artemis towered over her, yet at the same time, he felt so much smaller. He was completely speechless.

ooc: *By siren I mean the ones in Greek Mythology (more specifically the Odyssey) and not the alarm version.

Tsk Tsk Boy. I expected better.

The voice in his head snapped Artemis out of his spell. He quickly spun around to find out where the old man was hiding.

"Well then, if this situation is resolved, dinner is about to begin," stated the administrator, as he gestured with his arm. "This way please. All of you."

The students slowly filed out of the hallway and proceeded to the cafeteria. With a quick "thank you" to his saviour, Artemis followed the mass to their destination.

Faith smiled as the students left, but the hurried down another hall to prepare for the oppening assembly.

Corby worked his way through the meal lines, smiling at the numerous choices. He went with pizza and a brownie before making his way back out into the cafeteria. He was halfway through wondering how he would find Haley when he spotted her waving at him. She was sitting with a boy Corby immediately recognized.

“Hey, Haley,” Corby said as he sat. “I see you found Codebreaker.”

“No, he bumped into me on his way down here,” Haley gestured to the boy who was hunched over a laptop an completely ignoring them. “Hey, James!”

“Hmm?” The boy looked up from his laptop, finally noticing Corby, “Hey! Didn’t realize you were here!”

“Yeah, I noticed...” James eyes darted back to the laptop, through his fingers didn’t touch the keys. “Tell you’re at least looking at something interesting,” Corby sighed.

“Of course!” James grinned, “Something worthy of even the mighty Darkfist’s attention.” Corby’s eyes rolled at the sarcasm. “I hacked into the school’s mainframe to check out who the faculty members are. You’ll never guess.” James turned the screen towards Corby, who began scanning.

“Faith? Well, that’s no surprise...”

“Keep going.” Corby read the next name and his eyes narrowed.

“Him.”

“Actually, I was talking about the new vice principle.” Corby read the name once, twice, three times. He leaned back and let off a whistle.

“I’m torn. On one hand: awesome! He rocks! But on the other: that means that-”

“Yeah, the penguins have begun to stick their beaks into the school.”

Steel followed Cassie into the cafeteria, taken aback by the sights and sounds around him. Never before had the young man been surrounded by so many of his peers, and his eyes were wide with wonder. For the most part, everyone looked like classic, rebellious teens but every now and then, he would see someone who reminded him that this was not a school like any other. Over there, a young woman with blue fur was talking with a boy who had four arms. A teenager with wings walked by, engrossed in a comic book. Steel caught sight of his own reflection against the cafeteria windows, and remembered why he was here.

They joined a slow-moving line, Cassie looking carefully at the food offerings, Steel observing the people around them. She had slowed down, trying to decide between key-lime pie and a brownie. Two older boys took advantage of her pause, and cut in line in front of her, not noticing the hulking teenager that watched their every move. Steel had been taught how to pick his fights, but he had also learned that in life there were rules and rule-breakers. The young man had very little patience for those who disrespected others.

Reaching past Cassie, who was now considering a third choice, he grabbed both boys by their napsacks and lifted them into the air effortlessly, swinging around to deposit them gently behind them. He smiled down at the surprised boys grimly, and shook his head negatively. They simply looked up at the massive metal man, and turned away, color rising to their cheeks.

He kept walking as Cassie moved towards a table where a few boys and a young girl sat, one boy tapping quickly into a laptop computer.
