OOC: Two Years of NationStates Today!

Syskeyia
25-12-2004, 00:05
In a few hours, the NS nation known as The Republic of Syskeyia shall be exactly two RL years old.

It's been an interesting ride, since that Christmas Eve when "OctoberFost" (Ketosh) posted the thread "Nation Simulator (http://www.ambrosiasw.com/forums/index.php?&showtopic=28902)" on the Escape Velocity "Banter & Brawl" board, and my online life has not been the same since.

Looking back, I can still remember when Syskeyia's economy was below "Frightening," crime was still "relatively low" (instead of "totally unknown") and taxes were only 32% (which is where I'm trying to return them to now. :) .) Back when I started, I longed after the Frightening economies and the large, well-equipped armies of the "much larger nations," as well as their excellent RPs. I also wanted to fight a direct war with the evil fascists, especially the psuedo-Christian ones. Well, now I have my wish, although I am fighting the pseudo-Christian fascists on my own soil rather than the fields of Iesus Christi. Oh well, nothing's perfect. :)

It's been an interesting time, here on NS. I can still remember the famous Amerigan Slaver War. Thing was, I was about to just invade Amerigo when I then remembered the Catholic doctrine of just war, which states that armed conflict is only to be used as a last resort. So I started the blockade of Amerigo and the colonization of St. Peter Claver Island, and the rest is NS history. (Though, in retrospect, I should have landed before Matty did, to prevent all those atrocities.)

I must say that my knowledge of military stuff has increased tremendously since I started (as well as my military size.) Back in the Amerigan Slaver War, I just said that I had 300,000 troops and three carrier groups (as a quasi-retcon/clarification, that was actually 15 mechanized divisions, with accompaning air support and amphibious landing craft). Now, I've looked a lot at military stuff and, IMHO, have a decent military (comprising of modified RL stuff, and some stuff of my own devising). I am a bit unsure of whether I am a good enough war RPer, as I wonder about the balance of "character intimacy" and "broad scope," as well as the time it takes to flesh out a character or something. Unlike GMC, though, I lack the time to watch an entire WWII miniseries to inspire me to write a 2+hrs post. (You must take a laptop on the Polar Express (11:55 for several hours!) to write those or something, musn't you. :P )

The mark I have made in NationStates, it seems, is mixed. On one hand, I was responsible for instigating the Amerigan Slaver Crisis (which soon became the Amerigan Slaver War) and have made good allies/friends such as Chimaea, Pantocratoria, Lavenrunz and Western Asia (to name a few). On the other hand, my "religious fundamentalism/fanaticism" and some of my RP policies have earned me enmity and loathing from countries/players such as Yamatto/Gods Own, Knootoss, Der Angst and Dread Lady Nathicana (again, to name [i]just a few.)

But it has not been all a black mark, as developing my country's history, culture et cetera has proven to be a welcome hobby, even when I lack access to the Internet. And someday, somehow, I shall finish the NSwiki articles that I have started. ;)

I think I shall end with ten things I have learned from my experience in NationStates:

1. Do not think you can unite the "do-gooders" against the Forces of Evilâ„¢. For the "do-gooders" will be socially liberal, and accuse you of being a psychotic fundamentalist, and the psychotic fundamentialist, being one with the Forces of Evilâ„¢, shall accuse you of being a too socially liberal.
2. If you are strong, you are godmodding. If you are not godmodding, you are weak.
3. Your military size shall always be too big.
4. You economy shall always be too small.
5. Never, ever, under any circumstances ever say that the "bad guys" are supposed to lose. Just don't. (They still deserve to lose, though. :D )
6. If you plan to join in an open "social gathering" RP, be prepared to have no life as long as the thread lasts in order to keep up with the posts.
7. Never take so long a break of NS that you cannot prevent Knootoss from joining your alliance. :P ;)
8. Never give the death sentence to flagrantly sacreligious homosexual society writers, even if you never intend to enforce said decree.
9. Always give the death sentence to Reich co-belligerents, and make sure to carry it out.
10. Amerigo is a land of contrast.

Congrats.

Stay.

Also... another thing that's learned is once a year, a jolly man in a red suit is shot down over some nation.( mine (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=384274) this year )

Besides, we need Good Veterans anyway.

Merry Christmas all.

Are you sure it was Christmas Eve (24th)? According to the timestamps on that post, it was the 21st. Ainra Ruki but Tsaraine was so free back then ... but somehow, answering issues the way I thought they should be answered turned it into a horrible dictatorship. I like to think it's not so horrible now (especially now I've learned to RP properly), but it's still a dictatorship.

"Liberal Democratic Socialists" .... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

And as for your number 5 there, I think you rather missed the point - "good" and "bad" are entirely matters of opinion. In my books, you are a "bad guy".

Don't leave now! (then I'd really look like a loser). Sys, it's been good to share the ride with you as long as I have, to have heard your ideas about certain military systems and tactics and to have heard your responses to my ideas.

PS I finally got around to working on the WA NSwiki...and it's going somewhere.

Ehe, only do that for the posts for What Is, usually [last one logged as, um, 552 minutes edit time].

On one hand I'm impressed as all hell, on the other hand I'm frightened and want to run away from NS. Far, far away. :)

I think I shall end with ten things I have learned from my experience in NationStates:

Odd. It isn't your RP 'policy' that irritates me, and I don't consider you to be my enemy by any stretch of the imagination, despite your numerous attempts at classifying and insulting me due to my in character play. I can't speak for anyone else on your list, though I could hazard a guess at at least one's big issues with you - but I shan't, instead just stating for the record, mine.

It is your lack of respect for others and their right to creative license while maintaining yours (read: desire to dictate to others how and what they can/cannot or should/should not rp), your lack of understanding of just what 'in character' and 'out of character' means and the differences and proper uses thereof, and your constant unwarranted invasion of other people's threads with irrelevant out of character posts once again proclaiming your biased views. Yes, all these are my -opinions- and as such, are open to as many flaws as anyones. Having said that, those opinions for now, stand.

Now, all that aside, congrats on sticking around this long. Not something everyone's managed by any stretch, whether through addiction or intent. As for stay or go - do what you like, it's your quarter. Cutting out the fishing would probably help all the same.

I realize you have me on ignore, or claim you have, which is fine. And I realize I said the less I had to do with you on the boards the better I'd feel. But when my name gets used directly, I feel I ought to at least address it. *smiles sweetly*

Let's hope that in however much time you keep playing, you learn a few more things to add to your list there (some of which I think I touched on a paragraph or two ago, among which is 'how to play well with others') - hopefully things of more content than some you've mentioned.

(Not to be confused with Nathicana. Yes folks, you'd be surprised.)

ps - And yes Tsar, you are right. Good and Bad can be relative, depending on which side you're on. *grins* We for example don't think of ourselves as 'good' or 'bad' ... only 'right'.

Well, Syskeyia, while I rarely participate in your threads ($%@ ODW)... OK, I don't participate in them, but I think you are extremely cool.

Should I say, see you here next year? :)

[And check TGs] :)

So I won't. But you know what I think.

Good God! There's a difference? Both are:
Ruthless
Have an Italian fetish
Seem to spend their non-buisness time plotting the untimely demise of many prominent leaders and players.
