The room had light cream colored walls, and dark navy blue carpet. A large oak table sat five people, three men and two women. All wore green Class A uniforms of the Golden Simatar, and all had at least on General’s star on their shoulder. A single wooden chair sat in the middle of the room, the woman who sat in the middle of the table waved her hand to a MP standing at the door.

“Send Captain Wolfe in.”

The MP smartly saluted and opened the door. A man standing about 5’11 walked through the door, his Class A only had his Captain’s bars on his shoulders, and a black diamond patch on his right shoulder. Dirk Wolfe ran his fingers through his curly brown hair and moved forward. He stopped behind the chair, snapped to attention, and saluted.

“Captain Dirk Wolfe, Black Diamond Unit reporting.”

The Generals behind the table had already stood and returned his salute. Dirk then sat in the chair and waited. The woman who had asked for him spoke:

“Captain Wolfe, I’m General Morrison. I understand you went to the Shentavo Academy, am I correct?”

“Yes ma’am, several years ago when I was still in the paratroopers.”

“Do you have any idea why you were assigned to Black Diamond?”

“No ma’am, does it have something to do with me….”

“Going there, yes; we hoped the training would be enough….was it?”

“In this case, no ma’am; all the training in the world could not of prepared me for what I was about to do.”

“Do you know why the Black Diamond Unit was created Captain?”

“It was designed as an elite combat unit, the very best and brightest from our military. Covert ops, never mentioned in the press, though its existence is somewhat known by the general public but not by name. Some what like the American Delta Force, but more secret and better trained.”

“Very good Captain; now what happened at Silverback One?”

“Certainly ma’am; I was picked up at Kriegspiel by a Kiowa. We took off and I was not informed of what I was doing. We refueled once on our trip and several hours after leaving Kriegspiel…….”

The Silverback region of the Golden Simatar was not named that because it was full of silverback gorillas. In ancient times, the old kingdom that had ruled this region had found massive amounts of silver and in much later times platinum deposits. There were still silver deposits to be found, but not much. When it was the right time of the day, the sun glinted off small bits of silver that spotted the hills from old mining operations.

The black Kiowa flew only several meters above the trees as it raced towards its destination. The pilot was not fazed by his apparent reckless flying. He turned back and hit Dirk on the knee.

“Wake up Captain, we’re almost there.”

Dirk woke up and adjusted his fatigues. All he could see was trees, and then it opened into a large meadow that lay next to a large mountain. The Kiowa landed and Dirk climbed out, it was then he saw dozens of trailers hidden in the trees, and what surprised him the most, several SAM launchers.

“Captain Wolfe!”

Dirk turned around to see large man walking towards him. The man stood about 6’3 and was very muscular.

“Dr. Jacob Morton, pleasure to meet you.” Jacob’s grip was strong enough; Dirk thought he would break his hand.

“Yes I am. What is this all about?”

“Let me show you.”

Morton led Dirk to a small golf cart and before the soldier even sat down, the cart jumped and moved towards the mountain.

“I’m an archeologist Mr. Wolfe. What we have down here is top secret and I think you might like it.”

Rounding a bend, the cart moved onto a road, leading to an entrance into the mountain. Morton turned on the lights and moved into the cool darkness. They drove in silence; Dirk was not able to see much of the cave due to the darkness. Finally, the cart moved into a much brighter area.

The area was well lit and Dirk saw several more carts, and a large wall that blocked their path. A single person door and a service door for apparently vehicles were the only breaks in the structure. Dirk climbed out and followed Morton, adjusting his fatigues as the neared the door.

Two guards stood at the door, wearing simple dark navy blue uniforms, fatigue caps, lacking any kind of insignia, and each tightly clutching a Heckler and Koch G36C. Dirk found this and the SAMs very odd, he had never heard of a science team having such firepower. He shrugged it off and walked inside. The walls were a light powder blue, and so were the floors. Morton motioned Dirk into a room that was full of computers, memory back, and video screens. The single window had a large metal plate covering it. Morton turned to Dirk.

“Captain, this is what is everything is all about. Janet, please show him.”

A blonde woman wearing a white lab coat punched some buttons on a computer and the metal panel lifted up. Janet punched several more commands and high power lights began to turn on from all points in the cave. Dirk saw the main room was massive, probably several acres. His mouth fell open as he saw what was sitting in the center of the cavern.

“Oh my God.”

Dirk stood there, his mouth wide open as he stared through the glass. His breathing had nearly stopped when the panel had lifted. Morton looked at him, smiling happily as Dirk stood there frozen. Morton noticed the black diamond patch on the shoulder’s sleeve, he then looked at Dirk. Dirk didn’t notice Morton staring at him; he was frozen solid as he stared at the object in the middle of the cave. Dirk couldn’t believe he was staring at a temple.

The side that was facing him had the long, narrow stairs from the Aztecs; the entire structure seemed to be Aztec, yet there were columns on the side of the pyramid, which did not resemble Aztec.

“What the hell is an Aztec temple doing in the Golden Simatar?”

“Well….we don’t know exactly. It does appear to be Aztec…it doesn’t resemble Simatarian architecture in the slightest. And it is slightly less than twice the size of the largest pyramid at Giza.”

“Okay Doctor, answer me this. What the hell is it doing underground?”

“We don’t know, I’m no geologist, but the people we have here tell us that this appears to be a natural cave, that was made slightly larger.”

“How old is this?”

“We don’t know as of yet. We have been working on this for over….”

“I’m sorry Captain, but I’m having a hard time believing an Aztec temple in the Golden Simatar.” Morrison said, many around the table nodded.

“Ma'am, I am telling you the whole truth.” Dirk said to them.

“Okay, what did you do next?” Morrison asked. The man wouldn't back down, so she would let him speak.

“Well, Doctor Morton told me they had been working on the site for over thirty years….”

The pair walked out into the cave, wearing hardhats and carrying flashlights. Morton yammered on about it, the theories on how it got here and such. Dirk was only feeling smaller and smaller as he neared the massive temple. He saw that it was covered in markings, runes, and small statues. The pair stopped at the foot of the massive staircase. Morton smiled at him.

“Well Captain, lets go.”

They began the long, exhaustive climb to the top.

“Doctor, how high are we?” Dirk asked. The pair had reached the top of the temple.

“We are about seven to eight stories. Now, we did drive at a very slight angle to get here.” Morton said.

“We did? Didn’t notice in the darkness.”

“Can’t blame you, I’ve been here for a long time and have gotten use to it…come on Captain.”

Morton lead Dirk into the temple as Dirk was about to take another step, Morton stopped him.

“Don’t step there…ancient booby trap.”

“Oh…that would suck if I triggered it. But, after all these years, wouldn’t it of just broken down?”

Morton lead Dirk down the hallway, up ahead they could see lights. “Unfortunately no Mr. Wolfe. Have you ever heard of Karen Johnson?”

“Yes, I attended on of her seminars a few months back. ‘Ancient Simatarian Warfare’ very smart woman, doesn’t she have a son?”

“Yes, Ian. He is a very smart lad…back to Karen. A few years ago she found tomb that had crossbows armed and ready to fire. Person would step on a stone, and the bow would fire. We did a test with a mannequin; they still worked; so we are careful here. We found out the hard way, that stone primes the other traps.”

Dirk nodded as they walked down the dark hall, he stopped at a pillar and looked at an image carved into the rock. He put his hand on it and looked it before Morton called him from the end of the hall, Dirk stood and jogged down the hall and caught up with Morton, the image sticking in his head.
