<<OOC: First off, this is my latest return to the world of NationStates. It is doubtful that many remember me, but here I am with my 3.5 billion people. I don’t know how long it will last, so I’m going to just get straight to the point and just summarize some of the events that have taken place since the last time I posted. I could RP through all of them, but that would take a really long time and it would just be me posting. So I’ll cut right to the chase… Feel free to respond however you like.>>

"This is a special election edition of Edölia Today with Lüret Sun. Final counts from districts throughout Edölia are in, and the picture of who will be ruling Edölia in the near future is becoming clearer. For the most part, the results of this election are of no surprise to political insiders, although the success of the newly-formed anti-Imperialist parties has been striking, with both the National Communist and Libertarian Socialist Parties taking large numbers of seats in Parliament, and the Freedom Party which before this election had been given up for dead had a resurgence, taking a significant part of the seats. Despite these gains however, it is unclear whether or not this will change the balance of power in Parliament. The final results are as follows:"

Edolian Imperial Party: 25.9%
Edolian Socialist Party: 13.1%
National Communist Party: 13.1%
Libertarian Socialist Party: 12.6%
Freedom Party: 10.3%
Edolian Communist Party: 10.2%
The Green Party: 8%
The Red Flag Party: 3.2%
Christian-Capitalist Coalition: 1.2%
Independent Parties: 2.4%

"The massive gains in Parliament by the National Communists, Libertarian Socialists and the Freedom Party have come at great cost to the formerly dominant Red Flag and Communist Parties, which have taken massive losses. The Red Flag Party in particular, has shrunk from the heights of its power when it controlled nearly 20% of the seats in Parliament. The party took home just over 3% of the popular vote yesterday. The Imperial Party had reasonable gains in this election as well, mostly in response to the rise of anti-Imperial parties, who seek to overthrow the Impërator. As of yet, party coalitions have not been announced, although several conferences are convening in Blätterschplitt City to create a ruling alliance. We’ll have more news as it becomes available."

<<OOC: Expect some interesting developments that will actually have international consequences. So far, this is just an introduction.>>

“This is a special election edition of Edölia Today. I’m Lüret Sun. We start out today’s report with a surprising turn of events regarding Saturday’s Parliamentary elections. Representatives from each of Edölia’s nine largest political parties, as well as a host of smaller parties met today in Blätterschplitt City in the hopes of creating a majority coalition and forming a ruling government. Despite negotiations lasting over eight hours, no political party was able to garner enough support to build a coalition. While the Imperial, Red Flag and Communist parties formed an Imperial Coalition as normal, along with a number of smaller parties such as the Templars of Blätterschplitt, no other major parties agreed to join their alliance, and they were unable to garner enough support to build a government. A second coalition was formed between the Freedom Party and the two new political groups; the Socialist Libertarians and National Communists. Although the three parties have very different political views, their alliance is held together by a shared opposition to the continued power and rule of the Impërator. They were able to garner only 36.9%. Although it was widely expected that these two coalitions would form, the major surprise of the day is the formation of a third coalition, calling themselves the Independents. This alliance is led by the Socialist Party, and refuses to join either of the larger coalitions. The delegate representing the Socialist Party at today’s meeting, Hans Muhammed von Gröt explained the coalitions position.”

”The party leadership made the decision late last night not to enter into an alliance. At that point, it became obvious that neither party would be able to gain a majority without our backing. If you look at the way that the coalitions are set up, even if every single other unaligned party were to side with the Imperials, that would still give them only 50%, not enough, under the Constitution, to form a ruling government. That gave us a lot of power, and we intend to take advantage of it. Our third coalition offers a clear alternative to the two larger coalitions, which we believe are both utterly unfit to rule the government.”

“The spokesperson went on to condemn what he characterized as extremist positions on both sides of the dispute and called upon the citizens of Edölia to reject what he called the ‘dangerously radical’ ideas espoused by both political organizations.

“Under our Constitution, if no coalition is able to garner enough support in Parliament to form a ruling government by January 5th, the five largest political parties in Parliament are to submit candidates for the Chancellery. On January 8th, a voting session is to be held by all members of Parliament to elect the new Chancellor. Unlike normal circumstances, when the majority coalition members choose a Chancellor, in this special vote, the Impërator has veto power, which can only be overridden by a 2/3 majority vote. Furthermore, if no candidate receives a majority of MP support after two days of continuous and consecutive voting procedures, during which no MP is allowed to leave the building, sleep or eat, the Impërator is then given the power to appoint a Chancellor. Under the circumstances, this means that whoever the new Chancellor is, he will undoubtedly have to be a moderate as chances are that most MPs in the Imperial Coalition will attempt to filibuster the proceedings and wait for the Impërator to make his decision. Whoever is ultimately chosen will have to gain the support of a large number of Independent MPs. Whatever the final outcome, this will undoubtedly be an interesting procedure.”

ANN, Port Allanea

Today, the Scarlet Empire of Edolia has announced it’s election resuls. Coalition troubles are apparently ahead for the “worker’s paradise”, and the Freedom Party has made significant made. However, gains made by the National Communist Party has prompted a special statement from our President-for-Life, Alexander Kazansky:

*Alexander Kazansky Appears on Screen*

“It disturbs me greatly that in Edolia, such gains were made by what essentialy is a Nazi Party – except that, given that Nazis were National Socialists, those folks have an even harsher economical position. If and when the National Communists gain enough power to actually oppress people, the Allanean Stellar Navy and our other resources are standing ready to aid and evacuate the victims. Further, our offer of refugee status for anybody convicted under Edolia’s gun laws still stands.”

*back to the studio*

In other words, a big contract has been awarded to Allanean Arms, Inc. for the reinforcement of the Axackal Line.

OOC: So, back to business as usual?

“We bring you another special Edölia Today election update. As always, I’m Lüret Sun. A day has passed since the first coalition-building meetings in Blätterschplitt City, but still no one is any closer to building a ruling alliance. Although many offers have been made, coalition numbers have not altered in the past twenty four hours and most top members of the major parties are working to find candidates for the Chancellery whose names will be put forward tomorrow.

“On the international front, several foreign leaders have expressed interest over the election. Alexander Kazansky, President of Allanea, had this to say:

‘It disturbs me greatly that in Edölia, such gains were made by what essentialy [sic] is a Nazi Party – except that, given that Nazis were National Socialists, those folks have an even harsher economical position. If and when the National Communists gain enough power to actually oppress people, the Allanean Stellar Navy and our other resources are standing ready to aid and evacuate the victims. Further, our offer of refugee status for anybody convicted under Edolia’s gun laws still stands.’

“This accusation was met by harsh criticism by the junior intern at the Blätterschplitt City Fourth District National Communist Party headquarters.”

‘We, like, totally reject the idea that we are in any way Nazis! I mean, we love Jews! I’ve got plenty of Jewish friends. Well… maybe not, but I would love to meet some. I totally don’t hold the banking conspiracy thing against them! Anyone could have done that!’

“The President of the Edolian Nazi Party also had something to say in response to Kazansky’s comments.”

‘We wish to point President Kazansky’s attention towards us. I am personally very hurt that he did not mention the real Nazi Party in his speech. Just because we only got a tenth of a percentage point doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t be disturbing as well.’

“The Impërator, Erik von Blätterschplitt, relaxing in his hot tub, took time off from some of his more nubile concubines to comment on another part of Kazansky’s speech.”

’Although I do not believe that the National Communist Party’s goals are in the best interests of Edölia, as the current protector and defender of the Scarlet Empire, I take great umbrage at the idea of Allanea presuming to stick their nose where it doesn’t belong. And I believe that the Edolian arsenal of IGNORE cannons will be more than sufficient to deal with any United States space fleet.’

The Minister of Foreign Affairs decided to act pre-emptively. With his own elections coming up he felt that he must back the correct side, in the Vaadian view that is.

He typed a short e-mail and sent a copy of it to each of the anti-imperial parties:

To: {insert name of anti-imperial party official}

Congratulations on your election gains. I am glad to see that Edolia is finally coming around to the conclusion that one man with absolute power does not constitute democracy, or necessarily reflect the will of the People.

It has always gone without saying that the Free Republic would be much closer to the peoples of Edolia if it were not for the iron hand of the Imperator. I ould hope that all of the parties that can see this new future can come together and use the power and trust that the People have placed into their hands to elect a Chancellor , and strike a blow against the Imperator's power.

All Power to the People.

Theleb Kanaan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ilek-Vaad

He knew the Imperator's power was unlikely to be pratically challenged, after all few leaders with absolute power had the will or the wisdom to entrust power to even the most loyal population.

Out of Sight Roleplay:

Secretary of State William Clinton
So, I see our money went to good work in Edolia. Gains for the Freedom Party and the Capitalist Party. What's the problem we have?

Dep. Secretary of State Colin Powell
They don't have the majority to form a government, but they are damn close. Some of our guys in the National Intellegence Community think that if we were to send some guys over to Edolia undercover, and make a few phone calls to some of the MPs over there, we could convince some of the independant coalition members to join up with the anti-Imperial coalition. The director over there says we can get the five from the Christian-Capitalist Party to switch over from independant. He also thinks we can get another ten from the Green Party who are peeved over their lack of environmental concerns, if not the whole party. Some of our people over there are starting to report that there is a growing sense of anti-Imperialism over keeping ideals separate. That's a maximum of 45 MPs - enough to build a majority on, or at least, bring down the Imperial Coalition. A few phone calls, a few visits, a couple dollars - we could see a change in government.

President David R. Mitchell
We can't do this publicly, of course. I don't want to hear a peep from anyone's office about this.

Secretary of State William Clinton
Sir?

President David R. Mitchell
Make the calls...

<<OOC: A couple of points before I make an IC response. First, under the current Edolian constitution, single MPs cannot switch coalitions, only parties. Second, the Christian-Capitalist Coalition did not win extra votes, and I believe they lost some. The Freedom Party did make substantial gains of course. Next, Ilek Vaad should take into account that the Impërator does not have absolute power or anything close to it. He has about the same amount of authority as the American President, only he serves for life (which admittedly gives him a lot more clout). Also, Pilot might want to be careful backing the anti-Imperial Party since the anti-Imperialists since they probably wouldn’t like some of the policies instituted by a National Communist-controlled government. The Impërator is much more friendly towards foreign capitalist nations than the NatComs ever would be, although Pilot might have decent relations with the Libertarian Socialists or the Freedom Party. Ilek Vaad would probably want to back the Libertarian Socialists, but might get on well with a National Communist- or Freedom Party-controlled government.. Just keep that all in mind.>>

Message to the Vaadian Foreign Minister from Vanderbul von Hërtz,
Secretary General of the National Communist Party
“We thank you for your private support in this matter, although I hope that it will remain private. Our political position is heavily dependent upon the patriotic feelings of the Edolian people, who do not enjoy feeling that they are pawns in an international game. However, I do believe that Edolians will see over the next five years what the National Communists can do for the Scarlet Republic [Note OOC that he does not call it the Scarlet Empire] and we will no doubt be able to receive a majority in the next elections. I expect that once we are able to get enough support to amend the Constitution and eliminate the tyrant that currently rules our nation, our two great nations will be able to forge a bond of peace and friendship.”

Message to the Vaadian Foreign Minister from Mohammed Tariq al Kadafi ,
Secretary General of the Libertarian Socialist Party
”On behalf of freedom and liberty in Edölia, I think you for your support and hope that a relationship between our party and your great nation will be grow. I must confess that I see Ilek Vaad as an example of what truly free socialist thought can accomplish. As you are fully aware, our laws do not allow for donations to political campaigns –as well they should not- but perhaps the people of Ilek Vaad can assist our cause in other ways. I will keep you informed.

The message from the Freedom Party was relatively short and written by a senior staffer.
Message to the Vaadian Foreign Minister from Arnold von Kräus,
Director of Public Relations for the Edolian Freedom Party
”I thank you for your support, as does the rest of the Freedom Party and we hope that your contributions to our cause could, in the future, take a more direct approach. The Edolian people need to wake up and realize that communism doesn’t work, and that only a truly free nation can be considered truly great. With so many examples for Edölia to follow in Haven alone –your own great nation, Pilot and Allanea among them- it is a wonder to me that my people have not woken up to reality sooner. Hopefully, with your help, we can make that happen.

[Hey Edolia, I have a party in my parliment called the Crown Loyalists. It currently enjoys a majority in the Senate (my upper house) and a solid block in the House of Commons. It's primary policy is support of the Crown and its policies, although it has been known to break from a strict interpretation of Crown policies in the past, usually to the Crown's good. I guess my question would be, which of your parties is most like the Crown Loyalists?]

“Good evening. I’m Lüret Sun and you’re watching Edölia Today. Surprising greeted reporters at the Parliament building this afternoon as Edölia’s new chancellor was narrowly chosen, mainly in a vote by anti-Imperialist and Socialist members of Parliament. In a vote 256 to 244, Rosaura von Grönbouler of the very moderate Socialist Party. Although it had been widely anticipated that deadlock in Parliament would lead to an Imperial appointment, the anti-Imperial coalition leadership surprised everyone by announcing that it would side with the Socialist Party’s pick for the Chancellery.

Rosaura von Grönbouler, who was born in Spain to Edolian parents, has risen to prominence recently as one of the Socialist Party’s young hopes. At thirty two years old, she was the youngest person ever to be elected to the position of Magistrate of a Province five years ago when she beat out Communist rivals in the hotly-contested Sëfrul Magisterial election. She is considered a die-hard moderate, and was ejected from the Communist Party eight years ago after expressing views on property rights contrary to the party leadership. She made a brief statement on her election.”

“Good evening, Edölia. I am so pleased to have been chosen for this post, and hope that I will make the Scarlet Empire proud. Lately, we have seen our nation divided by internal bickering and inflexible politicians who seek to impose their rigid ideals on to this vast and diverse nation. The time has come for all Edölians to come together, united, and work to build a better future. For this up our markets to foreign investment. We need to eliminate the laws that require foreign companies to happen, however, changes will need to occur. First, the time has come to open to get special Imperial permission before setting up shop in Edölia. This may cause an initial loss of jobs, but the influx of foreign capital will, in the long term be beneficial to Edölia. We also need to build closer ties with other nations in Haven, especially Ilek Vaad and Pilot. Finally, I believe that it is important that I get this into the open: I am strongly committed to the continued rule of the Impërator, Erik von Blätterschplitt. He is an important check to Parliamentary corruption. However, I would not mind seeing perhaps a reduction in his Constitutional powers. Moderation in all things. Thank you.”
