Yup, Idealistea would love to be in. However, just signed up today so unsure how this works.

The Gulf States didn't realize Cherry Cup 7 even went on, never mind nearly completed by now. Otherwise I woulda RP'ed and maybe got farther than the Round of 16 - even though dominating Group 3.

We sign up to avenge our early exit from 7.

We'll sign up for this event, though hockey is an after thought here next to football, no one's ever really seen ice and a lockout happens when you left your keys in your car. Expect a fair number of our goals to be overturned by players trying to kick the puck in the net.

And no, i'm not running this, just bumping it. Hosting Football and Rugby World Cups at the same time are more than enough for me, thankyou.

Egads! The Cherry Cup Seven Champion Iansisle Gulls have heretofore neglected to sign up!?

I command the defending champions to do so at once!

On a hosting note, I'm willing to do so on a condition. I don't have any form of scorinator and anything involving something more complicated than a spreadsheet befuddles me. I'll gladly host if someone provides me with a simple, proven way of scorinating.

I've got a made-for-ice-hockey excel sheet made by The Belmore Family, which is pretty useful, though it does only groups of up to 7 nations each. TG me your email addy and i can mail it to ya.

And, funnily enough, we have 21 sign-ups now... Useful.

If no one has any objections in the next 24 hours, I'll do a group draw and start a RP/roster/score thread. First results, again if there are no objections, will be posted come Saturday evening (erm, call it around 2:00 am GMT on Sunday). Would be sooner, but I need to fly home and get back to using a real computer. :)

Oi. What have I gotten myself into? :)

As this is my first time ever hosting anything, any tips/suggestions/etc. the peanut gallery may have are more than welcome. I think I've figured out that scorinator - which leaves us with the problem of ranks. Do y'all want a simple extrapolation of last CC's results, or shall I try something more complicated?
Sarzonia
06-01-2005, 22:08
For simplicity's sake I'd probably use an extrapolation of last tournament's ranks. For instance, the defending champions (yourselves, of course :p) would be ranked first, the team you beat second, etc. Things could get complicated if you decided to rank teams based on RP bonuses and the like for teams that didn't make the knockout rounds.

If you haven't already, you might want to do a few demo sims of the tournament to be sure that you're comfortable with the scorination, any RP bonuses, etc. Also see if you can have someone can scorinate your results for you.

Of course! ;)

Yeah, I've been fiddlin' around with the thing (with rather dismal results for the first ranked me, curiously :() and I think I have it figured out. Anyone with Excel is welcome to sim my results; just TG me your e-mail so that I can send the spreadsheet to you.

As for RP boni, I'm not sure I trust myself with something that complicated (I'm a liberal arts major, darn it!). If someone has a fairly simple way of doing a bonus that can be integrated into this excel spreadsheet with minimum problems, I'm all for it. Otherwise, I think we may just be praying to the Random Number Gods.

I'm going to dive into the CCVII results and see what ranks I can drag up, then post them here for people to comment on/bitch about/what have you.

I think the last two Cups had a ranking system based on previous results too, which was cumulative over however-many Cherry Cups we had results for. Though I'm not sure what that system was exactly

If someone comes forward with that system before the draw, I’ll be happy to use it. Otherwise, it’s looking like straight ranks might be the ticket.

Simple, oh please make it simple!

Oh, believe me, I’ll try. The last thing I want to be is a hypocrite. :)

When does this thing start then?

Reading is teh good. Today is my mother’s birthday, so I’m taking her out on the town and can’t really do too much. Tomorrow I’m going to spend traveling, which again precludes NS hockey. Look for a draw and RP thread started sometime tonight, though.

That said, my basic plan - which is still open for change:

A qualifying stage consisting of three groups of seven. We have 22 signups - 21 will play, and I’ll give myself a bye ;). Now, I was debating between a big cup (12) and a small cup (8). I finally decided big would be the most fair, since I was giving myself a bye. I think if the top three in each group and the next best two qualify (11+me), that would be the best.

For the draw, I was thinking about literally pulling names out of a hat - I’m not very good with computer math. Basically, 2-4 is one draw, 5-10 another, 11-13 yet another, and the newbies the last one. If someone has a better/more fair way of working this, now’s the time.

That said, I’m off for a few hours. Please feel free to criticize my plan if something does not bode well for the funness!

Wella if is possible sign up

I'm going to include Wella in the draw and automatically qualify Liverpool England. The tenth place team will qualify, not the tenth and eleventh. Objections to this can either be left here or TGed to me.

Look for the draw soon. I'll link it from this thread.

I just got a comment about the ranking system. Since I've been a semifinalist like three times - how would I be ranked 11th or 8th? I was ranked like 2nd or 3rd going into CC7, though I got bounced in Round of 16.
Iansisle
08-01-2005, 19:34
Good question. First off, as no one has volunteered a more complicated system for figuring in previous Cherry Cups, I'm afraid that the rankings are direct extrapolations of finishing place from the last cup. Secondly, I ranked teams in single games based on the score. ie:

Starblaydia -7, Iansisle 53
The Gulf States 4, Kalaallit Nunaat 5

...

Iansisle 89, Kalaallit Nunaat -4

The rankings would be:

Iansisle
Kalaallit Nunaat
The Gulf States
Starblaydia

As there were several ties, I then considered who was the home team and ranked someone who lost by 2 away higher than someone who lost by 2 at home. If all else failed, I went with seniority: who's participated in more Cherry Cups.

Feel free to confirm my rankings or propose a new system if this one's just too simple. :)

Yo, chief, you're already signed up. You're the fifth seed in group two. Keep screaming like that, though, and you're likely to get booted. Let's keep the font size down, eh?
Tanah Burung

Here's the previous ranking system KN used, for historical interest if nothing else:

Results are based on the last three tournaments only:

10 points for champion
8 pts for runner-up
7 pts for 3d (position from semi-final down determined by how far the team advanced; when equal eg the 2 semi-finalists, depends on overall tournament record -- so if Team A won three, tied one and lost one before reaching the semi-final and team B won three and lost two, then Team A finished higher)
6 pts for 4th
5 pts for 5th
4 pts for 6th
3 pts for 7th
2 pts for 8th
1 pt for all other teams that took part

So that meant, for instance, that when Starblaydia beat Tanah Burung in the final, TB still had a higher rank because the results were cumulative. I'll add that this system would have me a great deal higher than 18th (last three would give me one championship and one runner-up spot), but i'm perfectly happy being haplessly 18th in a simpler system. In other words, i don't want to see a World Cup style mathfest to determine ranks!

Rank based on finishing point from last cup is good enough for me, too. Its not like we have a committee or anything to keep track of rankings, and nor do we need one.

Oh and "Starblaydia pwnz TB in CC8 rankz0rZ!"

I think that's the right way to put it ;)
