The Index of Useful Threads and Sites
For those of you who don't yet know, the next post has the index. This post is just the introduction.

Well, I'm not sure if you all remember, but Nanakaland has created several stickies before in the past and other reference threads that have either been lost or archived. Well, Nanakaland is back for the third time and here to stay (hopefully). I wasn't going to do another reference thread, but then I thought that perhaps I shall do one more. If this idea falls through, then it doesn't matter. I am no longer screaming for a sticky, for attention, for modship, and I'm no longer using ".:: ::." in my titles.

I just figured that there should create one last reference thread. Not to promote me, but to help people. I'm not going to do a fancy encyclopedias or all-in-one references. Instead, I'm going to compile something everyone needs - an index of all useful threads and sites. It would have lists of good economy calculators, threads that should be stickies, and other things of interest and importance.

Here is where I need your help - the help of the average person. The secret to my reference threads is that they were never done alone. If this is to succede I need people to recommend threads to be put in this index. Anything could be in here, from calculators to reference threads, from factbooks to encyclopedias. You - the average NationStates player recommends threads and off-site things relating to NationStates that are useful. No advertizing alliances or other things of that sort - just giving useful items for the confused person to find.

You want to know my secret? Your contribution. Please contribute links for me to add to our index. Yes. It isn't my thread. It's the thread of the NationStates community. What references they want are in it. I'm simply the editor and compiler. NationStates has grown so much since I started playing it in March 2003. Please help it grow more.

Index
This is the alphabetized index of helpful threads and places relating to NationStates. It is not much now, but eventually, it will be the stop for finding what you need fast and effectively. Help it grow by contributing links. Just in case you are totally new, I'll state it here: Those underlined words are links.

1 Infinate Loop's Flag Service (http://invisionfree.com/forums/The_East_Pacific/index.php?showforum=9)
1 Infinate Loop's famous flag service on the East Pacific's regional forums.

Aircraft (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=322078)
Similar to Clan Smoke Jaguar's guide to tanks, this guide is about aircraft.

Dictionary of Military Terms (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=286344)
The Dictionary of Military Terms is a thread in which there are various terms of use in military RPs. Pretty self explanitary, actually.

The Diplomacy FAQ (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=274640)
The Diplomacy FAQ deals with issues relating to diplomatic roleplay; specifically, it deals with how to maintain a realistic approach and attempts to answer questions posed. The thread is composed of questions and answers, mostly added by readers of the thread, and examples/general 'rules' (or rather, ideas of what the 'rules' of roleplaying diplomacy ought to be), as well as a section with quotes relating to diplomacy.

Economy Calculators
Pipian (http://www.pipian.com/stuffforchat/gdpcalc.php?nation=), Sunset (http://www.sunsetrpg.com/economystatistics.php), and Thirdgeek (http://www.nseconomy.thirdgeek.com/nseconomy.php?nation=) are the most frequently used economy calculators.

Economy, Militaries, and Invasions - More things to know (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=297064)
A tri-topic guide that may be useful.

Guide for NationStates Newbies (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=380545)
Green Sun's side for NationStates newbies may sound like it's just another one of those type of threads, but there is one way it is unique - it is written by a newbie (who has some experience in RPing from other sources. At first, I (Nanakaland) wasn't going to include it to my index, but this unique perspective - for a newbie by a newbie - made me add it.

Guide for Roleplaying Terrorism v2.0 (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=366018)
Way back (months ago) when I was on NationStates for the second time, terrorist nations seemed to have taken over International Incidents and tended to godmod. Well, Euroslavia (please correct me if I named the wrong nation) made a guide for terrorist nations so they could do terrorism right. Well, this is a new version of that old sticky.

Guide to Nationstates (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=357975)
Guide to NationStates is a helpful all-in-one guide to NationStates. Very self-explanitory.

International Mall (http://s6.invisionfree.com/International_Mall/)
The International Mall is an off-site forums place where many storefronts of various tech levels are. Fairly self explanitary.

IRC (for NationStates)
Internet Relay Chat is frequently used for live chats within the NationStates community. There are several threads written on the topic. There are two main ones, however. There's the list of channels (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=378125) and a full walkthrough (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=278619). As a side note, #NationStates2 is new and #NationStates_Diplomacy is no longer used (which hasn't been updated).

Making A Military (Download) (http://www.geocities.com/thecitizensdefencealliance/making_a_military.html)
A downloadable Excel spreadsheet that comes in handy doing some military calculations.

Military Equipment Pricing (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=287768)
Self explanitory guide by Clan Smoke Jaguar.

NationStates Complete Encyclopedia (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=346486)
Probably the biggest competator to NSwiki, this is a stickied on-forum thread in which there are encyclopedia articles. It probably is useful, but I (Nanakaland) myself don't use it because I came up with the idea first (when I was on NS months ago).

Naval Vessels (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=292413)
A third Clan Smoke Jaguar guide on vehicles. The first on tanks, the second on aircaft, and then this.

NSwiki (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/)
NSwiki is basically the NationStates version of Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org). A wiki is an encyclopedia in which the articles can be created and edited by anyone (unless that person is banned). There are certain rules that may be strict, but it leads to a cleaner community. NSwiki is a very useful off-site encyclopedia for NationStates and was even mentioned on the NationStates news page once.

Point Based Military Calculator (Download) (http://www.pacifier.com/~cziller/PBMC.xls)
All credit goes to Sunset and the Planet Mars Region. It's an Excel spreadsheet download and very usefull.

Spacetech: Orbital Mechanics (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=278778)
This is the thread on realistic space operations, specifically addressing the issue of planetary orbits and orbital equipment. It's a must read for roleplayers new to Future Tech.

Tanks (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=288671)
It gives "some information about tanks." Self explanitory.

Want More Respect on the Forums? (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=352036)
There have been many self-explanitory topics in this index and will be many more to come, but this is by far the most self-explanitory. Why waste time reading this description? Go read the thread itself.

What Godmoding Is (New Version) (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=367578)
What Godmoding Is was the only sticky at NationStates when I (Nanakaland) first came to it in March 2003. Moderators weren't yet mods in that time. What Godmoding Is was lost to the forum and remade countless times. Now, the newest version of the First Sticky is available for all to see.

What Logistics Is (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=275828)
This is the thread on the proper use of logistics for realistic military RPs.

PS. Next time come up with a short description so I don't have to.

Here are a couple of threads I started. Many other players contributed, and often did a better job than I did.

http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=278778

This is the thread on realistic space operations, specifically addressing the issue of planetary orbits and orbital equipment.

http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=275828

You might try to find Clan Smoke Jaguar's threads on navies, armored vehicles, etc. They were all pretty well done.

[OOC: I have one link to add, although as its a thread I started I'm somewhat reluctant to as I kinda feel like I'm advertising it or something...

But anyhow.

Three well used GDP Calculators

http://www.sunsetrpg.com/economystatistics.php
http://www.nseconomy.thirdgeek.com/nseconomy.php?nation=
http://www.pipian.com/stuffforchat/gdpcalc.php?nation=

I figure a description isn't needed, "GDP Calculator" is rather self-explanatory

Updated. As a side note, the bolded titles aren't links, they either contain several links of the topic in the description or refer to another topic.

Well, I took the liberty of adding stickies from various forums to this index.

Wow. A little less than 24 hours and already has 15 entries... If this gets too popular I'd have to create another thread and go the multi-post route...

I swear, it's like every thread Nanakaland makes has this big sign "Mods: Sticky This"
Nanakaland
12-12-2004, 04:35
No. Only the reference threads have that secret sign. ;)

[EDIT: Seriously, though, it's because I have ideas first. There's a quadrillion reference threads. I was the first to think of the index, so I got it. People with stickies (I swear, some people have more stickies than me) are usually those with uniqueness. Not every useful thread can be sticked or we'd have a page of stickies.]

I wasn't refering to you in particular. Once I went on #nationstates and two people were worshipping me. And some others in this thread are also sucking up. Where will sucking up at me get you? I'm not a mod.

Feel free to make the descriptions whatever you want, I didn't feel like making objective comments, sorry :D

Related to NS I only can think of these:

Making a military (http://www.geocities.com/thecitizensdefencealliance/making_a_military.html)
Very simple way of starting your military (statistical-wise) if you are a newbie

Flag Service by Infinite Loop (http://invisionfree.com/forums/The_East_Pacific/index.php?showforum=9)
No nation will be respected without an appropiate flag (that's probably not true, but don't tell anybody) and Infinite Loop is the best there is.

Now, if you feel like making another thread or expanding this one in the area of RL resources, here you go:

Flags of the World (http://www.crwflags.com/fotw/flags/)
Best RL vexillological database I've ever seen

GlobalSecurity.org (http://www.globalsecurity.org/)
Resources on all the military/intel stuff you can think of.

The CIA World Factbook (http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/)
The title speaks for itself

Federation of American Scientists (http://www.fas.org/main/home.jsp)
More RL resources, in this case what could be classified as Near-Future tech.

Nationmaster.com (http://www.nationmaster.com/)
Compare RL nations' statistics on almost anything you can think of, from agriculture to military.

Modern Firearms & Ammunition (http://world.guns.ru/main-e.htm)
Not a greatly designed page, but has plenty of technical info.

MILAVIA - Military Aviation (http://www.milavia.net/home.htm)
Reports and images of military airplanes and forces.

Haze Gray & Underway (http://www.hazegray.org/)
Historical and current information and pictures about naval military.

Updated. Added the two for NS. Not sure how I'd incorporate the others. Also added the Point Based Military Calculator, which is similar to the one Bariloche recommended (remember, the index is best if it has multiple things that are similar; leads to choices).
