"Darkest before Dawn" - OOC interest thread

North East Korea

Following up on an idea I had that was mentioned earlier, I intend to start a character-based survival RP based in a timescale running up to and after a nuclear strike.

The general overview is thus: the RP is set in Los Angeles, California on the West Coast of the United States. During the RP, there will be tensions escalating between the United States and North Korea up to the point where the US invades and North Korea responds with a nuclear attack along the western seaboard of Continental America. During and after the escalation, the RP will be focusing on the lives of ordinary citizens (you people) as they attempt to survive and escape the city. I will be playing as the government, giving them a perspective on how the organise and attempt rescue and help.

General points about this scenario:
1) I chose this setting for a number of reasons – firstly, it is entirely feasible that such retaliation may occur, which makes the scenario realistic. Secondly, unlike a normal nuclear war (if there is such a thing as a “normal” nuclear war), there would not be total destruction – due to North Korea only having a small number of missiles being constructed that could hit the United States, there would not be total annihilation of the whole country, allowing for the government to continue operating and providing somewhere for survivors to escape to. It is, in essence, the only feasible scenario for “limited” nuclear conflict.
2) There will be no certain enemies. None. No invading troops, no mutants, no cyber-killing machines. This is because A) North Korea could not stage such an invasion and B) the only enemy in nuclear war is the war itself. Whilst there can be conflict between survivor groups as they form uneasy alliances to attempt to escape, the main enemy is going to be the war – people trying to escape in the aftermath of a nuclear explosion through the destroyed city as the effects of radiation settle in.
3) I am trying to do something original, although it’s probably been done before. This RP is going to be completely free-form in how you run your characters (obviously, no mutants etc) – how they react, how they try to escape, who they meet and what they do. Hell, organise a peace march as tensions increase if you want to – this is completely your choice. I may jump in at times with an OOC push if things go really crazy, but what I’m hoping for is something whereby characters take on an entire life of their own. Great opportunity to build a character to use in your own later RP’s. ;)

I’ve made this OOC thread to see who would be interested in something like this. If it is popular enough to warrant starting, then this will become the official OOC thread for the RP. I hope that together we can break some ground in this role-play.

Any takers? :)

Sounds like fun. Depending on how many you allow in I'd probably get in on it, if that's alright. I just don't want fifty people RPing with me, ya know? That'd just get cluttered and ruin my fun.

But, other than that I'm very interested.

Glad to see so many interested people (apart from Adabamus; stop advertising regions in my thread.) In answer to a question put forth by many of you - don't worry, I won't have loads of people running around, otherwise it will get a little awkward to manage.

So far we have around six possible people for this (a couple of them definate) - anybody like to suggest an upward limit on the number that you'd be happy to RP at?

dont know 'bout a cap...it would be cool if we could get more people that live in CA, or better yet SOCAL lol

what is the yield of the DPRK's nuclear weapon, that hit California?

I was thinking of around a Megaton - if I've got my calculations right for blast radius, that'll really damage a large section of the city whilst leaving most of the residential outskirts only slightly scathed, but if I've got that wrong, feel free to correct me.

Final bump before college - check back later.

if it hit los angeles...hmm...then San Fernando Valley wouldn't be touched that much...that's good...lol...why dont we just have a nuke hit San Francisco?

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure whether a NK nuke could hit that far - according to some of the declassified stuff I've read, a lightweight version of their latest bird in development could just about hit Los Angeles.

actually, if the nuke was following the jet stream, San Fransico would be a closer target than Los Angeles.

Well, maybe I'll change it to San Fran - means I've got to redo my intro post I'm working on, so you'll all have to wait a little longer for this to start.
