OOC: I'm leaving for a college visit in 7 hours and I won't be home until Monday night (GMT -6) and won't have PC access. Could we delay that start of this?

I'm afraid I can't, as I leave Singapore, and any computer access, for 12 days from the 15th of Dec onwards. There are at least 13 matchdays I need to complete. I'll try my best though.

Oh well, I can afford to lose a few matches I suppose. I don't want to be any hassle. :)

The Sarzonia Blizzards

Coach: Harold Clark

ROSTER (starters in bold):
1 Brian Snow (Joe Gibbs University, Nicksia): At 6'2, 185, not the most agile goalkeeper around. Uses size and positioning to cut down most goalscoring chances. Decent puck handler. 21 years old.
30 Tim Collins (Saugerties Storm): This 26 year old just took up hockey two years ago, so Snow is the more experienced keeper. Is poor at puckhandling. At 5'9, 165, uses the butterfly style and his agility to stop shots.

DEFENSEMEN:
2 Bill Langham (Woodstock Seawolves): Team captain. This 28 year old has the most hockey experience of any Blizzards player. Has the best plus-minus in the history of Woodstock City College (plus-32). Known more for savvy than speed, but he's a very hard hitter.
4 Kevin Dewey (Nicksia Hawks): Known as a great offensive defenseman. Led his amateur league in goals by a defenseman with 12 in 30 games. 24 years old.
10 Brandon Yancey (Portland Pirates): The fastest defender in Sarzonia, he sometimes takes his ability to chase the play from behind for granted and doesn't position well enough for Coach Clark. 22 years old.
12 Ben Johansson (New Isselmere University, New Daurmont): Rugged defenseman known for taking his share of penalties. Has the skill to handle the puck and jump into the attack if needed, but usually is a stay-at-home defenseman. 23 years old.
14 Connor Burleson (Wilmington Whiteheads): The hardest hitting defenseman on the team, most of this 25 year old's checks are clean. Able to deal a bone jarring hip check. Not the best at puckhandling so he's a stay-at-home defenseman.
15 Dave Miller (Portsmouth Pride: Aggressive, attacking defender often skates with the fourth line. Led the team in penalty minutes during the team's exhibition tour through Sarzonia. At 29 years old, he's the oldest player on the team.

FORWARDS:
11 Jeff Cantnell (Galveston College): This left winger has one of the deadliest shots among a left-shooting wing in Sarzonia. He led Endymion State College in goals with 22, which matches his age this year.
16 Marc Coulier (Carthage Crush): Led the team in faceoff win percentage last year (61 percent). Does especially well in clutch faceoffs, so he'll be the first line center. 27 years old.
17 Mike Ridley (Lexington Lasers): The top goal scorer in his amateur league with 28 in 30 games, this 26 year old right winger is the best all-around player Sarzonia has.
19 John Davis (Lexington): Rugged right winger usually defends against the opposing team's top offensive forwards. Is excellent at getting under the skin of some of the greatest players on opposing teams. 21 years old.
20 Kevin Spencer (Galveston College): Can play both center and left wing. Usually decent on face offs, but he's best known for being a tough defensive forward. 28 years old.
22 Albert Cronin (Carthage): Utility forward, can play all three forward positions, but is best at left wing. Improving on defense, but is often sitting on the player's bench in the third period. 24 years old.
23 Steve Becker (Woodstock): For a fourth line center who is among the leaders in penalty minutes, has a deft touch around the goal. If he keeps his hands to himself instead of beating on his opponents, he could be a leading scorer. 23 years old.
24 Kelly Miller (Portland): Arguably the hardest working player in Sarzonia, this 27 year old right winger goes full-tilt on every shift like his family's honor depended on it. His scrappy play has endeared him to his teammates everywhere he's gone. Will dig in the corners and deliver brutal checks on opposing forwards when he has to. The alternate captain.
27 Billy May (Nicksia): Despite his size (5'8, 145 pounds), the toughest fighter on the Sarzonian team. He'll engage anyone anywhere, anytime. Next to no skill with the puck, so when he's on the ice, he's out there to pick a fight. "Plays" left wing.
32 Casey Matthews (Newcastle University): At 6'3, 205 pounds, he's easily the biggest player on the ice for the Blizzards. Despite his physical presence, this 24 year old has a surprisingly good touch when he plays center, but he's well-known for being ambidextrous. Not very good with faceoffs, however.
36 Harvey Benedict (University of Montgomery): If your enforcer has been given a game misconduct, he'll pick up the slack as a right wing. If you have to use him for anything else, he'll do well with his defensive assignments and distract the opposing defense when he has the puck. Other than that, there's not much else this 28 year old is good for.
44 Casey Russell (Henley State College): The younger brother of Sarzonian football star Darwin Russell, he has the hockey equivalent of his brother's skills, but at 19 years old, it'll be a while before he plays center with the starting unit.

Sarzonian Hockey Association team names in italics. The league will start this winter with eight teams playing 56 games each.

Rayzors cut down to size
Starblaydia Back to Reclaim Title
a Special Report by 'Scoop' Jackson of The Jhanna Chronicle

In a rare glimpse inside Karak D'Ragh, 'SCOOP' RAGNARSSON reveals how the Starblaydia Rayzors have an influx of new talent in their drive for a Second Cherry Cup.

Its easy to marvel at all the Great Works of Humanity: The Sistine Chapel, Stonehenge, The Great Wall of China, Jeremy Jaffacake's Guide to Insulting Friends and Random Passers-By, The Complete Works of Ron Jeremy. Its all there. One thing that most people will not have marvelled at, however, is the Great Works of Dwarfkind. When Starblaydia's borders were extended a few years ago to incorporate the former state of the Holy Empire of Nemya, we also inherited a region we call Reigas.

It's a nothing-province, really. Small and relatively inhospitable with a whacking great mountain-come-extinct-volcano sitting in the middle of it. One thing that we didn't know about it, however, was the great and ancient underground city of Karak D'Ragh, the City of Fire. Discovered, completely by accident, by a Starblaydi survey team mapping out the new borders, all of Starblaydia was soon in an uproar of excitement about the city. This was no ordinary ancient city, it was inhabited. It's occupants? Dwarves.

Yes, Dwarves. Short, stout, bearded Dwarves. There's not a lot of them in the world, but a hefty chunk of them live in Starblaydia. Their history is a long and intricately-detailed one, but as the '2002 Starblaydi Journalist Best Able to Cut a Long Story Short Award'-winner, I think I'm quite well-qualified to tell it to you.

Back in the day, and I'm talking waaaaay back, before the Romanic Empire came to Starblaydia, before the Daii came to true power, when they were still just a bunch of Horse-riding mercenaries, when Jhanna was a collection of mud-huts, the Dwarves came. They had been forced into exile from their homeland, now known as Cockbill Street (Yup, its The Street again, do they ever get out of our history?). Forced to cast aside their 'High' Dwarven nomenclature in favour of Anglicised names like 'Axebiter' and 'Grudgebearer', these proud Dwarves decided to quit their beloved caves of and make a new home elsewhere. How they came to Starblaydia and Atlantian Oceania, on hte other hand, is a complete mystery to me, at least. They didn't look like they wanted to tell me.

So they found the dormant volcano and carved out an incredible city of caverns and tunnels, filled with light and song and laughter, and there they stayed, having agreed with the nearby Jhanae and Bekk peoples to leave each other in peace.

Fast-Forwarding a millennium or so, Starblaydis discovered the Dwarves of Karak D'Ragh. Now, by this point, you're probably already wondering "What the hell does this have to do with (Ice) Hockey, Scoop?" Well read on, Ice-fans, and I'll tell you.

In those many years gone by, the Dwarves watched our ancestors with interest. Most interesting of all were the huge technical innovations of the last hundred years or so. They tuned into our airwaves, listened to and then watched our broadcasts, then browsed our websites. Unbeknownst to us, they liked our sports, among other things. Their own game of Dwarfbowl is similar to American Football. Though they took to Football like a Duck to Embroidery, the game of Ice Hockey was a big draw. They realised that their natural build was not geared to most athletic pursuits that the Starblaydi people played. In Ice Hockey, however, they could overcome their physical drawbacks. On Ice, a Dwarf can become more graceful than a Human, their low centre of gravity giving them turning abilities like no other. Combine that with natural strength, agression and their short bursts of exertion, Dwarves played Hockey!

"But why have you used up 500-odd words on a History lesson, Scoop?" I hear you cry. Well, its good, informative background and research (look Pa, I'm a real journalist!) on the reason why Dagmer Cleftjaw, Myself and dozen or so Hockey players were allowed to travel into the heart of Karak D'Ragh...

And now, its time for a Cherry Cup Flashback as be re-wind back to Matchday Eight of the 5th Cherry Cup.

Nearest Division rivals shut out
by 'Scoop' Jackson, The Jhanna Chronicle

The Gulf States were smacked down by the Starblaydia Rayzors to make a huge Divisional lead secure for the moment.

Unlikely goals by Replacements Dagor Saagt and pint-size Jordy McCliff gave the Rayzors an early lead, cemented and then sealed by leading scorer Ragnar Larsson, supreme on the Power Play.

The way the Rayzors are playing, it looks like they're always on a Power Play, being shorthanded just seems to even the field for the other team.

"Eight straight wins is as good as I could dream of," said Rayzors coach Dagmer Cleftjaw, "but there's a helluva lot more to go. This lead gives us a head start, and we need to keep it."

"We have a love-eight relationship!!"

The team were getting absolutely sick of coming out with the slogans pushed upon them by the press corp. "Five Gold Wins", "Six of the Best", "Seventh Heaven", now it's "A Love-Eight relationship". Could it get any worse for them?

Well yes, in fact, there's not many ways it could actually get better. Eight and oh, Rayzors all the way, baby.
Now back to your regular feature

The City of Quiet Fire is a wonderous place. Light fills every nook and cranny of the place, high halls stretch up into the rock with intricate runes and decorations overy every inch. The floors are smooth and tiled and everywhere is the glint of gold and other precious metals and jewels. Great power and communication cables run the entire length of the City many times over, providing heat, power, water, electricity and anything else the Dwarves require in the deepest depths of their home.

Into this scene we did step to see, of all things, the Dwarven League Championship Game in the City's multi-purpose sporting arena. Other than the Turbine Hall, the Sports Hall is the largest single area in Karak D'Ragh, holding room for a Dwarfbowl, Ice Hockey or any other type of surface along with bleacher-type seating for anything up to sixty-thousand Dwarves.

The sound was almost deafening, for once by the sheer volume rather than any ironic silence. As the Electrickery Guild faced off against the Brewer's Team (the most-supported team in the city, unsurprisingly) we were amazed at how true-to-life the Dwarves had made their Hockey, it was just like watching short, fat people play real Hockey. Once we had got over the fact it was exactly the same game, our seasoned eyes trained onto the actual skills of the Dwarves.

'Chuffin' 'ell,' one player remarked with a host of apostrophes, 'they're pretty fookin' good!'

That was all we needed to know, really, execpt one more thing. Would they play for Starblaydia? OF course, they're only eligable for Starblaydia under international rules, but would they even want to play. That question was answered almost immediately as we opened our mouths to speak to the players of many other teams that hadn't made it to the Final.

"Can yae get us any tickets for the 'Street games, lad?" was the overriding question. They'd already seen the fixture list for Cherry Cup 7, obviously.

"I can do better than that, friends," said Rayzor Head Coach Dagmer Cleftjaw, "How'd you like to try out for the Starblaydi team, and have the chance to be a Rayzor?"

I'll tell you now, I've never been offered so many beers in my life. And now, after extensive hang-over recovery on all sides, the Starblaydi Rayzor's Roster for the 7th Cherry Cup in Liverpool England looks like this:

Head Coach: Dagmer Cletfjaw

And the Group line-up, which we've already seen posted on a variety of Internet Websites and in the Newspapers, is this:

Group 2:
Tanah Burung
Starblaydia
Sliponia
Cockbill Street
Schismstan
Squornshelous

Defeated finalists in Starblaydia's glorious Cherry Cup win Tanah Burung are back to face the Rayzors again, as are the Slips of Sliponia, who'd better try and keep their footing. As already stated its the Cockbill Street match that has got all of Karak D'Ragh eager with anticipation, though who the hell are Schismstan? Let's hope they keep their team spirit intact while playing the last team in the group, Squornshelous. Our prediction for the final look of the table goes like this:

Q. Starblaydia
Q. Tanah Burung
3. Cockbill Street
4. Squornshelous
5. Sliponia
6. Schismstan

As for Starblaydia's uniforms, one kit is generally white with sharp purple bits and black edging, while the other is generally purple with sharp black bits and silver edging. Which one is the 'Home' and 'Away' kits, I don't know as I've never managed to figure out how who plays what and wears which why when.

This is 'Scoop' Ragnarsson with my customary Hockey chant to finish off any piece of writing about Starblaydia.

Rayzors all the way, baby!

Blizzards look to gain experience

An aborted attempt to stage a winter version of the Atlantian Oceania Olympics resulted in the Sarzonian ice hockey team only playing one game. Luckily for Coach Howard Clark, that game was a 5-2 win over Psytroxia. However, the team stayed in practice sessions waiting for a next game that never came.

"It's not the first time we've had a game that never happened," Clark said. "We were supposed to play a tournament in Inurface but we had a bye for the first matchday and the tournament never got off the ground. Hopefully, this tournament will get off the ground."

The Blizzards will play in Group 3 with third ranked The Gulf States and ninth ranked Liverpool England in the group. The team is ranked fourth of six teams going into the tournament, but goaltender Brian Snow warned the team about looking closely at rankings with new teams.

"We're new to international competition ourselves," Snow said. "One game is not a lot of experience. We're going to have to fight and scratch for points."

The team is also going to have to rely on Snow to keep the team in games. In the 5-2 win over Psytroxia, the Blizzards got strong offensive play, but they're expecting a much tougher go of it in Group 3.

"It's not going to be easy to qualify but we'll work hard in the corners and play tight defense and hope that's going to be enough," Clark said.

Oliverrian National Team

These players are all from the Oliverrian Pro Hockey League(except one)

Coach:Jean-Claude Gibouère

Goalies:

1:Jean-François Larache(Marshalliston Capitals): Is 28 years-old. Is 6'1" and weights 235 lbs. Plays the butterfly style. In the league, maintains a GAA of 1.03 after 25 matchs and eff% of ,977.

32:John Mezzalona(East Rubbermade DJ's): Is 22 years-old. Will be the next Martin Brodeur I think since at 22, he is nearly perfect with a GAA of 2,05(very good for a goalie that doesn't have any team in front of him) and a %eff of ,943. Is 5'8" and weights 195 lbs.

Goalies will share the job, which means the first game, Larache will start and the other, Mezzalona will start.

Defensemen:

44:Louis Tremblay(Lamontagne Pingouins): Best offensive defense of the nation. He has scored 22 goals and passed 33 pucks to the scorer to have 55 points, and 55 points at his first season in the league, it's not nothing. He has a +/- of +10 and 33 penalty minutes(3 fights included). Is 6'1" and weights 200 lbs. Is 21 years-old.

98:Gil Brown(Marshalliston Capitals): He's the one that has helped Jean-François Larache having his spectacular season. Has already 200 minutes of penalty, 3 points: 1 goal, 2 assists. And a +/- of +22. Is 6'6 and weights 286 lbs. Is 33 years-old.

31:Richard Lanoix(Letremblay Bleu-Blanc-Rouge): The last 3 year's Defensement of the year! He's going for a 4th but, don't forget there is Gil Brown... I'll stop talking about the OPHL and talk about what he has done: 30 minutes of penalty, +/- of +8, 15 points: 3 goals, 12 passes. Is 5'11" and weights 199 lbs. Is 32 years-old.

22:Steve Dubé(Perpignant Français): Another Frenchie lol. Is 20 years-old. His first year in the OPHL and is împressionative. Is the FASTEST defense in Oliverry. Still needs improvements and doesn't fear going charge the other guy near the boards. Is 6'1" and weights 185 lbs.

58: Oliver Jones(Coastal Oceans): Is good to play trap(that we don't play). Is good only in defense, isn't fast and stays mainly in his slot. Is 5'8" and weights 230 lbs.

39: Lil'Jon Hat(Coastal Oceans): Same thing as Oliver Jones except that he is 6'4" and weights 245 lbs.

Forwards:

1st line

The next 3 players are all part of the same line in Oliverry. This line is called "The Superfrenchie Line"

2:Guy-Jacques François(Marshalliston Capitals) "PLEASE WELCOME THE BEST PLAYER IN OLIVERRY: GUY-JACQUES FRANÇOIS!!!": That's how he's acclaimed when he come at home or when he goes at the other rinks in the country. He paricipated in Commonwealth Hockey tournament as a player for Oliverry and done 11 goals for a win of 15-0 against Canada's Senior Pro Team. Is VERRRY Fast. Is 5'7" and weights 188 lbs. He is 29 years-old

4: Denys de Ladurantaye(Marshalliston Capitals): This players is so fast and agile that he pases through any defense. But his scoring ability is not the same. So he has 77 passes and no goals this season. Is 23 years-old, his height is 5'11" asnd weights 165 lbs.

6:François Laroche(Marshalliston Capitals): Very good scorer but is slow and not agile. But he has spectacular hands. Has already scored from the red line when there was a goalie on the other team. Is 26 years-old. Weighrs 210 lbs and heights 6'2"

2nd Line

8: Johnathan Bailey(Sunberry Coastals): Very simple guy. Loves to play hockey and doesn't ask so much money to do it. He hates every nation out of the Federal Commonwealth Society. Very good to score but very bad skater(he even falled down 3-4 times this season)
Is 29 years-old, weighrs 175 lbs and heights 5'6.

8: Felipe Alanzano(Blurnberg city Zorros)(in the Junior major hockey league Association of Oliverry): the only Spanish speaking and the only junior player to be part of the national team. Why? Because he has good potential! He's 17 years-old. Had a 125 Mph shot at the last all-stars game. Very fast for his age.

10: Michael Nurenburg(East Rubbermade DJ's): The only German speaking player. Is deaf so when the referee stops the game, he has to check if it's true. Very good player except this handicap. Is 26 years-old, weights 187 lbs, heights 5'9".

3rd line

12: Frank Thompson(Perpignant Français): The only English speaking of the Perpignant Français.Does very well in the league. The "One-timer king" for the commentators. He's very syncronised with the puck but otherwise, he's not so good. Is 23 years-old, weights 178 lbs and is heighting 5'9"

14: Joel Hatcher(Sunberry Borders): Has done 3 hat-tricks this year! But that's all. He weights 200 lbs, heights 6'5 and is 29 years-old.

16: John Motorola(Costal Oceans): Between a power checker and a fast forward: Loves to check but is fast. Weights 217 lbs, heights 5'10" and is 25 years-old.

4th line
These players are all power checker
18:Pat Andretti(Letremblay Bleu-Blanc-Rouge): Weights 200 lbs, heights 5'11" and is 29 years-old.

20: Brian McGil(East Rubbermade DJ's): Weights 225 lbs, heights 6'8" and is 35 years-old.

23: Jersey MacMaster(Coastal Oceans): Weihts 217 lbs, heights 6'3" and is 29 years-old.

Other News!

The Emperor, Olivier Turcotte(or Olivier I) took the plane WITH the players. He's a very sociable emperor(his ministers are reproaching this to the emperor). He declared: "Today is a great day for the nation! Oliverry will participate at his first really international tourney and even if we lose, we will have participate and tried to qualify for the tourney. So, everyone in the plane: Go! Oliverry Go!" Very enthousiasmic emperor.

The Korinthos Predators - Pre-Game Analysis and Roster

The Korinthian National Hockey Team, dubbed the Predators, prepares for it's first game against Oliverry as the rest of the nation is anxious on hearing the results of Korinthos's first international hockey match. The team left Syracuse International Airport this morning for Liverpool England were they will compete for the Cherry Cup - the top prize in NS Hockey. The team has no knowledge on the way Oliverry plays hockey and they also don't know the opposing team's game plan, but the team is praying for the best and based on the skills the players possess, the game should be in favor of Korinthos but nothing is certain in the Cherry Cup.

Blizzards melt down in Cherry Cup opener

Obviously, playing one game of international hockey when you expected to play in two full tournaments doesn't help a team trying to establish itself on the international ice hockey scene. The Sarzonian ice hockey team found that out the hard way as it kicked off its first-ever Cherry Cup appearance with a 2-0 loss to Esth.

"We had trouble winning faceoffs and when you don't win faceoffs, you don't win hockey games," Coach Harold Clark said. "We didn't get much pressure on their goalie until late in the third period and by then, we had to use a sixth attacker."

The high point for the Blizzards was the play of goalie Brian Snow, who stopped 26 of 27 Esth shots, giving up a goal to the team's best offensive defenseman. The other goal came into the empty net with 28 seconds remaining.

"Snowie picked us up out there," defenseman Bill Langham said. "He made some amazing stops out there."

"I just tried to see the puck and make saves," Snow said. "I can't worry about what the rest of the team's doing out there. If I do my job, we should get some wins somewhere down the road."

The Blizzards face fellow newcomer Korinthos in their next match, and Clark is already looking ahead.

"When you're a newcomer to the Cherry Cup, every game is going to be tough," he said. "We're not taking seedings or rankings into account when we face off." And speaking of faceoffs, Clark said the team would be spending more of its practice time on faceoffs before the game against the Predators.

"We have to start winning faceoffs or we won't be successful," center Marc Coulier said.

Burung Beaten Again
Perhaps an Omen?
from 'Scoop' Jackson of The Jhanna Chronicle

The team that Starblaydia defeated in their last match of the 5th Cherry Cup fell once again the the red-hot Rayzors in their first match of the 7th Cherry Cup. This time it was by three scores to one, and has the Starblaydi Camp thinking it was something of an Omen.

'Dude, that was like, winning the Dwarven League,' said Thorin Nibin, who got the Rayzors off to a great start after a slapshot on a powerplay, 'radical, man, the crowd was amazing, like totally in the zone. Woah!'

Not your average dawrf-speak, I'm sure you'll agree. Too much time with the snow dudes and dudettes, i think. Other than that, Starblaydia's game is off and running with speed, power and grace. The Dwarven contingent are fitting in perfectly. In fact, the combination of Human and Dwarf is certainly proving to be a hard-hitting one on the ice, quite literally.

With a naturally low centre of gravity, the dwarves can perfrom near-impossibly tight turns as they slide around the ice. And once they've ogt their momentum going? Look out!

Starting with a great win is just what the Rayzors needed to put nerves aside and set themselves up for an attempt at a second title. Sitting top of Region 2 isn't too bad, either.

Rayzors all the way, baby!

Vilita inquires about Sliponian Time Machine
Disqualification Looms if Starblaydia keep Cherry Cup Crown

---------------Vilitan authorities and the Vilitan Orbital Intelligence Agency have begun an official inquiry on the origins of the Sliponian Time Travel device. The devices existence has been rumored after multiple "Tag"'s by the Sliponian hierarchy. Since "Tag"'s have not been needed since the global switch off of self-sufficiency, and towards the highly flaunted, but not terribly improved Jolt Technology, many have questioned whether Sliponians have been travelling back in time and growing accostomed to the habitual "Tag"ging, before returning to the modern Joltinized world, and accidentally forgetting that they were now existing in a land of "Thread Tools" and "Subscriptions."

---------------The Vilitan Ice Hockey team has indicated, that if this technology is confirmed, they will move to disqualify Sliponia from the tournament, unless the Sliponians agree to use the technology to go back in time and steal the Cherry Cup 5 trophy from Starblaydia by any means possible.

Coach Harold Clark responded to the Vilitan team's objections to Sliponia's use of antiquated "tagging" technology by raising a counter objection.

"If he's going to move to have a team disqualified for using tags, I can move to have him disqualified for that hideous outfit he wears to practice," Clark exclaimed theatrically. "There's just something more romantic about a tag than the cold steel of technology."

Clark said his team was well versed in the new technologies; in fact, the Blizzards make frequent use of satellite television, TiVO, Mac computer editing software and progressive scan DVDs, but the tag was still widely employed.

"Excuse me, I've got a phone call," Clark said as he picked up his new model camera/video cell phone. He pressed the phone's ignore feature and put the phone back in his pocket.

Coach Gibouère's first match analysis

Yes! Today, Jean-Claude Gibouère, coach of Oliverry, is going to the stand:

Coach Gibouère: Hi everybody. I'm here to make a little summary of how I felt the game has been. For a first game, the team made a good 2-2 draw game. We had to accustom to a new type of rink, and a new kind of play. Korintos was very fast, but our goalie was very good, stoping 32 shots. Our "Superfrenchie line" was very good, doing a goal. Each player of the line has a point in the leaderboard. The other goal was scored in powerplay when Felipe Alanzado surprized the goalie from a back-hand shot. But our goalie had problems in first period, according 2 goals in 30 seconds. Anyway, it was a good freaking game. So now, I'm waiting for your questions:

ONN: Jennie McCarthy, from Oliverry News Network: How did you feel for your first game?

CG: I felt very nervous. I mean, It was important for Oliverry and we've done well. End of the answer!

HNI: Mahomed Mutaman, from Hockey News International: How did you felt when you heard you national anthem at the end of the game?

CG: I was very moved. And having the Emperor beside me singing the anthem was, for me, very nice!*snif

RO: Jean Lavoie, from Radio-Oliverry: A draw. A draw! What did arrive to the team?

CG: Hey, littlepersonthatthinksthatheknowsallfromhockey, it was our first game, don't you remember.

Emperor Olivier I: guards

JL: nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. heeeeelllllpppppp

CG: Can't someone ask something to the emperor?

OSN: John St-Germain, from Oliverry Sports Network: Emperor, as you like hockey, will you be here as long as the tournament will last?

In the background: *pif *paf *slaannnngggggg

Emperor: Sure! Because I love hockey.

CG: So thanks to everyone that came here to the press conference. Good afternoon, see you tonight for the next game!

Cockbill Win?!

All the crazy sports from 30 years ago seem to be coming back. We were in a field hockey championship a couple of months back - managed to get knocked out by the Liverpudlians, naturally, since they hosted the thing, and now the Streetians are back in Liverpool England to play hockey on ice.

Well, perhaps not so strange - did you know Vimesbairn United played Vimesbairn Athletic in hockey as well? In a dump next to the University, were temperatures regularly reach below -10 degrees due to magic fluxes, United plays Athletic in front of a couple hundred kids and interested spectators. It's about as popular as cricket in Vilita, speed skating in Rejistania or field hockey in Starblaydia, one would think.

Still, the Streetians somehow managed to sneak a win over Sliponia today. Don't ask how - Thomas Tremlett was the hero with one goal and one assist, along with goalkeeper Jonathan Brown who only conceded the one goal - from 49 shots. Just seemed like that kind of day for the Streetians - however, surely no sane Streetian would care, seeing as the football team won 4-0 and even Nonesuch Street draw bigger crowds than these ice hockey lads.

---------------...unless the Sliponians agree to use the technology to go back in time and steal the Cherry Cup 5 trophy from Starblaydia by any means possible...

OOC: Oh, the ideas you spark, you crazy, jealous, inspirational fool of a man!

IC:

The Scene, a laboratory somewhere in the snowy, mountainous province of Hallad, in Starblaydia.

The Time, a few weeks after Starblaydia have lost to Tanah Burung in the 5th Cherry Cup Final.

Confused? You will be...

'Professor, you don't even know if this will work,' Roberto pleaded with his mentor, 'you can't risk yourself like this.'

Professor Malvius G. Motrochenko, the leading thinker in Chrononomics in all of Starblaydia, perhaps even the whole of Atlantian Oceania, scoffed at his assistant's pleas, brushing a few specks of dust away from the surface of the chair that sat in the middle of the room.

'Look, Roberto,' Malvius said, dropping the vial into his jacket pocket, 'how can I prove my all my theories, ideas and conjecture without experiencing it for myself?'

'But Professor...'

'No more talk, my lad.' Malvius butted in, sitting in the chair, 'is the camera on?'

'Yes, Sir.'

'Good.' He turned to the camera and smiled. 'Hello. My name is Professor Malvius Gregory Motrochenko, and I ask you to look at the paper I am holding up for the camera.' He duly did so, the headline clear as day. 'See the headline? 'Rayzors Come Second On Debut.' I am about to change all of that, by using my Chrono-Spatial-Displacement Device.' he smiled once more for the camera with a devilous glint in his eyes.

'A Time Machine, if you will.' He turned to his assistant. 'Roberto, if you please.'

The young assistant threw the switch, pressed the button, then said a quiet prayer. The complex machinery around them began to whirr and click. Tubes hummed with energy and the great technology sparked into life. The focal point of the machine was aimed directly at the Professor, sitting quietly in his chair. Up until now it hadn't looked malevolent to his old eyes, though now it could become the harbringer of a very messy, painful and unique death.

Electricity crackled, water boiled in its pyrex tubes as the creshendo of noise slowly built up. Sound pitched so high that it was brealy audible to human ears screeched in the background, just close enough to the edge of hearing to seem like a far off jet plane. Malvius swallowed and dabbed the sweat from his brow, putting the tape and newspaper in a small satchel, its strap across one shoulder.

Before he knew what had hit him, he had fallen to the ground. There had been a flash of incandescent light and here he was, flat on his back, looking up at the ceiling. But it wasn't the ceiling of his laboratory.

He blinked a few times, letting the ghost of the flash fade from his optic nerve.

'Sit up, Malvius,' he said to himself. So he did.

It was a corridor. Carpeted in a smooth blue colour. Pictures of Hockey's great teams lined the right-hand wall. One door was at the far end of the hall, on the left. He could vaugely hear the sound of laughter from at least a dozen thick, heavy voices.

Malvius stood. His joints ached, but then again he was nearly sixty, and not in good shape, they always hurt. That was nothing new. Suddenly the door ahead of him opened and out rushed a large body of men. To any Hockey fan it was obvious, it was the team from Tanah Burung, fully kitted out, fresh for a game of hockey. As they marched by towards their Final sporting challenge, Malvius caught some of their speech.

'Game Seven, guys, lets kick some Starblaydi ass!'

'Cherry Cup Final, last match, boys! Let's take Number Five for Tanah Burung!'

Even the custom-stitching on their uniforms said it, to the eagle-eyed, though Malvius was not up to his peak, still disoriented by his trip through time and space that he could, even now, scarely believe.

5th Cherry Cup Final
Starblaydia Vs Tanah Burung
Game Seven
The Gulf States

All of a sudden the corridor was empty. The muffled sound of a cheering crowd drifted through the corridors. Malvius was all alone, and stepped into the dressing room. He saw a scene of kit bags and lockers. Over in the corner was a table with a large vat of water and stacked plastic cups.

'Ah-ha,' he said to himself, walking over and reaching into his pocket. He withdrew the object and turned his hand over, opening his palm. Just a colourless liquid in a small plastiglass vial. Malvius opened the top of the vat and looked into the claer water. A few shakes later and it was done, the vial emptied into the team's water supply.

'The Rayzors couldn't do it on their own, perhaps with a little help from me, they will emerge victorious. Two birds with one stone, as it were.'

Malvius had always muttered to himself, this was nothing new. He had proved time travel was possible, and if his beloved Rayzors had a Cherry Cup to display, what harm in that? Just extra proof. Of course, if Tanah Burung won, then they would still truly deserve it for overcoming such... problematic stomach-based effects.

At the sound of voices he quickly reached into his satchel, with tape and paper still inside. His hands fumbled for the device. Would it work, or would he be stuck three weeks in the past, with another version of himself in the very same stadium? The thought could not be given life for one more moment. He pressed the button on the smooth, bulky device in his bag.

The feeling of returning was vivid and unsettling. He felt like he was being stretched, pulled beyond his will, beyond any reasoning of physics and muscular structure. When his senses returned to normal it was as if he had been hit by a truck, the shock overwhelmed him so. The chair was under him, but slipped out to the side as the cold hard floor of his laboratory came crashing up to meet him.

'Professor!' cried Roberto, 'You were only gone a few moments! Are you alright?'

'Perfectly, Roberto,' Malvius breathed through tired lips. 'Tell me, who won the Cherry Cup?'

'The what?'

'The Cherry Cup, boy.' Roberto was still stunned by his mentor's question. 'Dammit, the Ice Hockey, three weeks ago, who won it?'

'Why, we did, Professor, don't you remember? You were sitting in the Gulf States' stadium with me?'

'No, Roberto,' Malvius gasped, 'I do not remember that. Be sure to tell me all about it some time. Rayzors... all the... way, baby...'

With that he collapsed in Roberto's arms. The assistant quickly checked Malvius' pulse at the neck. His heart was still beating, his chest still rising and falling with the breath of life. Exhaustion, probably. But why the question about the Hockey?

Blizzards can't cash in, lose 1-0

Before the seventh Cherry Cup, the only previous game the Sarzonian ice hockey team played was a 5-2 victory in which the offense peppered Psytroxia with shots and took advantage of its opportunities. However, the first two games of the Cherry Cup have been a different story for the Blizzards.

Despite 34 saves by goaltender Brian Snow, the Blizzards lost to fellow newcomers Korinthos 1-0 when they could only generate 17 shots on net. The Blizzards are in a tie for fifth place in Region 3 with only goal differential putting them ahead of Liverpool England.

"It was the same story as the first game," Coach Harold Clark said. "We keep losing faceoffs and we couldn't generate any pressure when we were able to dig the puck out of the corners. We could very well be 1-1 right now, or even 2-0 with the way Snow's playing but we have to get him some goal support."

"I can't worry about the offense," Snow said. "I've just got to keep doing what I can to keep the puck out of the net. Our defense has been solid in front of me so that's helped us out." Snow has allowed only one goal in each of the first two games, with the other goal coming into an empty net.

The Blizzards (0-2) haven't gotten their power play untracked, going scoreless in seven chances with the extra man over the first two games. The team has only taken three shots in those seven power plays. Conversely, the team shut down 11 of 12 power play chances by their two opponents thus far.

"Our defense and our goaltending haven't been the problem," forward Mike Ridley said. "Snowie's been the strength of this hockey club. The problem's right here," he said, pointing to his right shoulder.

"We all have to look at ourselves in the mirror," said defender Bill Houlder, looking down at the floor in the player's lounge. "We've got to make sure we're doing what we can to put the puck in the back of the net."

"When you have a goalie with a 1.01 goals against average after two games, you've got to be 2-0," Clark said. "We're not and that's the story of the tournament so far."

Rayzors shut out by Schismstan, Defence needs tweaking
from 'Scoop' Jackson of The Jhanna Chronicle

Title-chasing Rayzors lost their first match of the tournament to some bunch of nobodies called Schismstan. Not the kind of thing you want to be reading over your morning toast, i agree.

Starblaydia were shut out by the Schisms, failing to put the puck in the goal at any point in the three periods. Schismstan, on the other hand, blasted a single goal past Thror Honnhirrim, between the pipes for the first time. This was also Schismstan's first ever point on the board in international hockey, so let's congratulate them for that, the gits.

'This should teach the boys that you cant play soft against even the smallest team,' said Head Coach Dagmer Cleftjaw in an interview shortly afterwards, 'I didn't play my first-line very much because I didn't think they'd be needed, that the second would step up to the plate, as it were. Obviously I was wrong. Our defence needs to short it's game out, fast.'

Now Cockbill Street sit atop Region 2, somehow, though two-time consecutive Finalists Tanah Burung (OOC: Did they win? I can't remember) sit right at the bottom of the table with just a single tie in their two games.

After the 5-3 win against Liverpool England, Frank Thompson was happy for his 2 one-timers goal. The "one-timer king" has return! He declared:

"It was a tough and verry offensive game. 2 one-timers. I could never imagine that!"

"But wait for the other teams. They are now waiting for us"

Who will be the winner of the next Oliverry's game? We'll see that soon!

In what only could be described as a shocking defeat...Hisam crushed Hockey Demi-gods Kalaallit Nunaat 3-0. There was celebrations in the streets as this is Hisam's first ever hockey win and for it to come against such a respected team like Kalaallit Nunaat is even stranger.

This reporter has no more words to add, due to being shocked except for the fact that the nation has now named the team. The Hisam Hockey Team really had no name when going into this tournament...However it is decided by the nation to call them: The Hisam Giantkillers

Ice Cats question Sport

---------------------With the current lack of goals being scored in the 7th Cherry Cup, Vilitan officials have begun to question whether Ice Hockey was really being played, or if their team were duped into some psychotic experiment against their will.

---------------------Despite the Vilitan's positive placement, second only to Iansisle in the tables, Questions have been raised be the Leazi-Corada in speaking with the representative of Starblaydia at the latest Atlantian Oceania Regional Council meeting as to whether all the standards of traditional Ice Hockey were being up held.

LC: Well now, we've been doing quite well down there in the Cherry Cup, but I actually haven't been down to see any of the matches, have you?

RS: No, I haven't been either, but damned if I know how we are sitting second in our group having scored just 3 in two games

LC: I know what you mean, anytime our Ice Cats would score just 3 in two games, it would have meant two certain defeats. Even 3 in one game would usually get us at best a tie, do you think they've made the nets smaller?

RS: Maybe, or even worse, maybe they've made the pucks bigger!

LC: And shaped them in a ball instead of a discy-thingy!

RS: And gave the goalie a bigger area!

Oliverrian team's today's practice turned into problems

Firstly, the guy that rents us the arena refused to rent it to us again since we won against his favourite team. So we had to go outside the city. But, all other cities wanted to fight against our team. So we went to Oliverrian embassy that has a rink inside of it and we practiced there. The Emperor and the ambassador went practice with us. The Emperor had to go to infirmery since he injured himself to the ankle. The ambassador had to go with him. The coach slode down on the ice and injured his shoulder. But his injury isn't so problematic and he will be able to lead team for the next game vs Esth!

Blizzards face uphill climb

To say the Sarzonian ice hockey team is struggling to find answers to its offensive doldrums is to make an understatement worth a prize. The Blizzards have not scored a single goal in two matches this Cherry Cup and their task doesn't get any easier in the next two games.

The Blizzards (0-2, fifth place Group 3) face the top seed in the group, third ranked The Gulf States, who sits in first place in the standings as the only unbeaten team in the group. After the game against The Gulf States, the team faces the host nation, second seeded and ninth ranked Liverpool England.

"We've got about as big a challenge ahead of us as you can have," Coach Howard Clark said. "We're struggling to generate any offense at all and we're facing two great teams, and we don't even have the luxury of playing on neutral ice against Liverpool England. We'll have to work real hard in the boards."

The team spent extra time in their practice session working on face offs and the power play, two areas that stood out as trouble spots in the team's first two games. Clark said the team was considering changing its lines to get its best offensive players on the ice for the power play, along with other changes.

"It's easy to say you'll put all your best goalscorers on one power play line," Clark said. "But we also have to keep those guys fresh for even strength hockey or for the penalty kill. We don't want to spend all our energy desperately."

For all the team's struggles, the Blizzards are only two points out of the second qualifying spot in the group, with surprise results sending Liverpool England to the bottom of the group on goal differential. Goalie Brian Snow has played outstanding hockey, allowing one goal in each of the team's first two matches. But the team said it would have to step up its game to pick Snow up.

"We've let him down in the [opponent's] blue line," forward Mike Ridley said. "It's not his fault we haven't been winning hockey games. If it weren't for him, we wouldn't even have a chance to win a game and we've been in both games."

Giantkillers Continue Winning

Hisam continued its winning ways, defeating fellow newcomers 7JM in a closely contested match, 2-1. Following the teams surprise win over Kalaallit Nunaat, the team was euphoric and quite pumped to win their match. Coach Fareed Asden was heard saying that the Giantkillers might actually have a chance to win this cup. Though, the chance seems slight, the Giantkillers are currently in 2nd place in Region 1. Now to the highlights of the game.

The first period started off in earnest with both teams feeling each other out and not really advancing the puck beyond the blue line. Some errant slapshots were taken but most were easily dealt with the teams respective goalies. In the final six minutes however, the Hisam offense started flowing and eventually they were rewarded with a neat goal coming off a one-timer from 2nd line Left Forward Klete Velbon.

In the 2nd period, 7Jm came out with a vengeance, repeatedly testing testing the Hisam defense. The Hisam offense was flat and really could not advance past the halfway line. For their efforts, 7JM was rewarded a goal in the eleventh minute, but they could not capitalize on the momentum they had going their way, and so the 2nd period ended with the score 1-1.

In the 3rd period, 7JM again came out fast and strong, capitalizing of the momentum they had built in the 2nd period. However, the Hisam defense held. At this point, 7JM pushed their defenders up a bit too much and using this, the Hisam offensive line broke free of the halfway line and scored on a 3 on 2 in the 7th minute. The game score ended this way

Final Score: Hisam-2, 7JM-1

Oliverry, you still won it!
After a very surprising win against Liverpool England, Oliverry won again against Esth 3-2! When we say what is going on in here, we don't say what is going on in Oliverry. So here's a vox pop from Oliverrian people to know what they're thinking about the Oliverrian performance to Cherry Cup:

Person 1: whhoooooooohhhooooo! Oliverry's the best hockey nation in the whole world! yeeeaaaaahhhhh!!!

Person 2: We will be the champions, it's sure!

Person 3: I don't care, I don't love hockey...

Person 4: Let's go Oliverry let's go!

Person 5: Who cares about the draw? We won 2 games. Thar's the most important!

So there was only a person out of 5 that hated hockey. But it was a person for who studying is the most important thing in the world.

Let's go back to the results of the game:

Oliverry plays very offensive play. But they just did 3 goals. 3 goals in Oliverry's kind of play is not enough. But Esth's goalie was a god, making 49 stops out of 52 shots. Larache was the goalie for this game, making 33 stops. Frank Thompson scored another goal in one-timer. Guy-Jacques Francois scored the two others. So congrats to Oliverry for this other win!

Blizzards break skid, draw 2-2

It took them nearly two periods and a total of 157 minutes 32 seconds to do it, but the Sarzonian ice hockey team finally scored its first goal in the seventh Cherry Cup tournament thanks to a slap shot by defenseman Kevin Dewey from the point, and ended up with their first standings point by drawing The Gulf States 2-2.

"It was starting to wear on us," Coach Howard Clark said of the team's scoring slump that befuddled the team's players. "It felt good to light the lamp again and just play hockey. We were beginning to press a little bit."

The Blizzards got a rare rough start from goalie Brian Snow, who allowed both Gulf States goals on five shots in the first eight minutes of the first period. With a team that had such a lengthy goalscoring drought, the 2-0 deficit must have seemed like it was 20-0, but the Blizzards never gave up. They continued to muck in the corners and finally began to string passes together midway through the second period.

Sarzonia (0-2-1, 1 point) got the opportunity it needed when right winger Mike Ridley was hooked on a rush past the center line, sending the Blizzards on their fifth power play of the game. The man advantage was anything but for the team, which was 0 for 11 in the first two-plus games of the tournament, but Dewey ended the scoring droughts with 15 seconds left in the two minute advantage, sending the teams into intermission with the world's third ranked team clinging to a 2-1 lead.

Ridley scored the first even strength goal for the Blizzards five minutes into the third period when he slammed a rebound past the Gulf States goalkeeper. The goal did more than tie the game 2-2. It gave a glimmer of hope to a team that was beginning to feel desperate.

"We were beginning to wonder if we'd ever score," Ridley said. "When Dewey scored that goal, it took a huge weight off our shoulders."

What happened to Oliverry?
The title speaks for itself. Sure, Larache made 46 stops but there was just the 17 years-old guy that scored a goal. Maybe the obligation of practicing in the embassy since nobody wants to rent us an arena to practice. But it was against a great and very offensive team(a team like us). So everyone in Oliverry is sad but they say that it isn't finished since it lefts 6 games in the tourney and we are 2nd so we still have a chance to qualify!

Giantkillers keep on Winning

The Giantkillers again came away with another toughly won victory against Castillanos. The Giantkillers, who had lots of momentum going into the match, after their win over 7JM, scored in a flurry going two goals up in the first period and shutting down any Castillanos offense effectively. One goal was a slapshot from first line right defender, Carl Eran, into the top left corner of the goal. The second goal came off a rebound from Eran's slapshot. The puck ended right at the feet of first line right foward, Darren Rathman and he calmly deposited the puck into the net, beyond the reach of the Castillanos goalie.

Hisam came out dominant in the 2nd period, again forcing the Castillanos goalie to make some fantastic saves, however no goals were scored and in fact Castillanos started making Hisam goalie Marvin Jok work.

In the 3rd period, the teams were evenly matched with both teams getting good chances on goal, but not finishing. Then in the eleventh minute Castillanos scored off a face off and with that, started piling on the pressure. However Coach Fareed Asden put in a very defensive strategy to hold the line and the clock finally ticked down, leaving Hisam with the "W"

Coach Fareed had this to say about the victory, "I'm really pleased with the boys. They kept their nerves and also didn't let the pressure get to them. We're really developing as a team."

Oliverry takes another lost

Today, Oliverry lost another game but it was to Sarzonia. The coach understands why they lost and didn't give excuses like "the players didn't play 60 minutes" or "our goalie had some problems". But he said: "Sarzonia has a VERRRY good hockey team. What can we do against that? We had 3 powerplays more than them but, our team has problems in powerplays and they're good in Penalty Killing" So now, Oliverry is 4th of the Group C

The Giantkillers turned out to be Giantlosers against Kaze Progressa. The Progressans thoroughly outclassed the Hisam team in every aspect of the game. They were quicker, there offense was crisper and thier defense was more stiff. Hisams only consolation came with a goal in the final period against Kaze Progressa's fourth line.

Kaze Progressa
05-12-2004, 12:19
Kaze Progressa's sporting sides have been performing miracles of late. While the eyes of the foreign and domestic media have been directed at the football team's astounding run to the WC18 final, and now no doubt towards last night's monumental upset win over Harlesburg in the basketball World Cup, the ice hockey side have been perhaps the finest of all.

Five wins out of five have left the Progressans in the perfect position and increasingly as title favourites. The last major threat in the group, Hisam, were comfortably beaten 4-1, with Jaulinta Tajitara and Bavazi Buanu helping themselves to two goals each. They now have five and four respectively, out of the 16 the Progressans have scored. They have the second best scoring record in this Cup - and the joint second best defensive record, with only six getting past Gahua Juan. Only Iansisle have a better goal difference, and they lost 2-1 last night to The Lowland Clans. The Progressans are now the only side with a 100% record in this competition. Surely, surely, this can't go on?

Starblaydia Lose to Sliponia
Press decline to make any 'Rayzors slip' puns
from 'Scoop' Jackson of The Jhanna Chronicle

Region two may be the most tightly contested group of the Cherry Cup so far but Starblaydia will still be disappointed to be sitting a point behind the top three at this early stage.

Yet again it is the Rayzor's goal-scoring prowess that has prevented them from climbing the group, though a few good wins might even see them a point or so clear of the chasing pack, if things get back to normal. A win over the Slips would have put Starblaydia top of the group and left Sliponia in fourth. As it is, the places are reserved as the Slips slide on up into second while the Rayzors cut their chances into fourth.

Sorry, couldn't resist puns throughout the entire piece.

Blizzards finally snap funk, win 7-2

During the first two games of the Cherry Cup, the Sarzonian national ice hockey team couldn't dent the scoreboard, and the team couldn't get a third goal to win their third match, a 2-2 draw against The Gulf States. The team lost its next game to host nation Liverpool England in a rare bad game for goalie Brian Snow.

The Blizzards finally took care of both the goalscoring and win droughts, blitzing past Oliverry 7-2 to keep the team in fifth place in Region 3. In a quirk that came about from the offensive explosion, the Blizzards actually have a plus-one goal differential despite a record of 1-3-1.

"We did a great job out there in all phases of the game," Coach Harold Clark said. "We did a lot of good things in the penalty kill and we finally had a productive powerplay."

Clark dismissed the comments from Oliverry's coach that Sarzonia outmatched them.

"What else do you expect them to say after a 7-2 loss to a team that hadn't won a game in the tournament," Clark asked. "We've got a long road to go before we can qualify for the next stage. That's the goal we have to think about and it has to start with a win over Esth." The Blizzards lost to Esth 2-0 in the first game of the Cherry Cup.

"For us to be a factor in the second half of qualifying, we have to start winning hockey games, especially against teams we've lost to earlier in this Cup," said right winger Mike Ridley, who scored four goals and notched an assist. Defenseman Kevin Dewey scored two goals and notched four assists.

The Blizzards admit it will still be a long shot for the team to advance to the next round in the Cherry Cup, but they are encouraged by their play in each of the games.

"We've been in every game so far," Snow said. "The only game that wasn't close was this game. Everything else has come down to the third period."

Another tie game for Oliverry

A 0-0 game. But the Oliverrian team wasn't happy since they are good scorers. But what did happen to Oliverry? A 3 games without a win game. If this draw would help this team to be a bit better, it's now or never the time to come back into this competition. There have been rumors that Oliverrian team was kidnapped by a Liverpudlian terrorist group after their win(we have to say that since this win, they never won) but the Emperor dementied that.

The Emperor comes back to Oliverry!

Anyway, Augustus Oliverus had to come back to Oliverry to assist to the NS Bowl Tournament. So for the departure of the Emperor, the team did a great dinner in the Embassy and everyone said goodbye to him.

Giantkillers Rebound

Hisam rebounded from their thrashing given to them by Kaze Progressa, by winning a scrappily fought game against Krytenia. Having lost to Krytenia in their first international match ever, the Giantkillers felt they had enough confidence to get a different result. The match followed the same process as previous Hisam matches with the same result. Hisam started off strong and scored a goal. Krytenia rebounded and scored another. Then in the final stages off the match Hisam came through and scored the winner.

Coach Fareed said "Im pleased with the boys. They again showed they can handle pressure and stay calm under tense tensions. As long as we keep winning, I'm happy."

LIVERPOOL ENGLAND -- "Ha!" exclaimed head coach Steve Martinson, "We're 5-1-1 with the same level of participation!"

Studies have blamed the 'finals season' for the lack of Gulls reports being broadcast in the Seventh Cherry Cup.

Blizzards notch second win, 1-0

For a new team to the Cherry Cup, the Sarzonian national ice hockey team has been very competitive despite a 1-4-1 record in Region 3. The Blizzards picked up their second win of the tournament behind the first shutout by goalie Brian Snow and defeated Korinthos 1-0.

"We're going to keep going out there and playing our type of hockey," Coach Howard Clark said. "There's no quit in this team."

Right winger Mike Ridley scored the team's only goal on a wraparound during one of the Blizzards' five power play chances. The Blizzards killed off eight power play chances by Korinthos. He skated into the corner to receive a pass from defenseman Kevin Dewey after Dewey won the puck in the corner.

"It was just a gritty, tough goal, the way our whole tournament has been," said Ridley. "We're going to keep fighting until the last game is over."

The Blizzards kept their slim playoff hopes alive with the win. They are three points behind Esth for the second and final playoff spot in the region and have lost to Esth twice. They would need to win and get help to advance to the knockout stages, a feat that most observers don't expect. But don't expect the Blizzards to give up.

"It's been said that the opera isn't over until the fat lady sings," Dewey said. "She may be warming up, but we can still hope she doesn't hit a note."

Giantkillers Tie

This time there was no shocking victory. The Giantkillers tied against Kalaallit Nunaat 1-1 in a slow moving and very boring match. Both teams appeared to be taking it easy in this game and many spectators left before the 3rd period. The only period of excitment came when the two goals were scored and they themselves were both slapshots from long distance.

Coach Fareed, after the match, "We did not show enough intensity and therefore we could not capitalize and beat Kalaallit Nunaat again. Hopefully, this will no happen again and we can consolidate our place in the standings."

Hisam is still in 2nd place in the standings with Castillanos right behind them.

Blizzards surpass Gulf, 4-3

After looking dead just two games ago, the Sarzonian ice hockey team is now within two points of the second knockout stage spot in the seventh Cherry Cup after its biggest upset in hockey history, a 4-3 win over third ranked The Gulf States.

Goalie Brian Snow made 29 saves and forward Mike Ridley scored a hat trick and assisted on fourth line center Steve Becker's game winner with just 1:36 remaining to send the Blizzards bench into delirium after the final horn sounded.

"This was as big a win as I've ever been around," Coach Harold Clark said. "Beating Psytroxia [5-2 in the team's inaugural game] doesn't compare to this one. We're still in the running."

The Blizzards (3-4-1, seven points) knew they could compete with The Gulf States right from the opening faceoff and spent six of the game's first nine minutes in the Gulf States' defensive third of the ice. The team fired eight of its 31 shots on goal in that eight minute period, getting the first of Ridley's goals on his fourth shot and the team's fifth. From there, the Gulf States started to get away from their game plan and started playing "desperate hockey," their coach said after the game.

"We were shocked at how good that team played," he said. "Sarzonia's not playing like a new hockey team right now."

Ridley struck again with two goals in 2:09 of game time as his second goal was scored with eight seconds left in the first period and his third goal came at 2:01 into the second period. The Gulf States made a goalie change after Ridley's third goal and played some shifts with four forwards and one defenseman and gradually climbed back into the game. Their first goal came at 18:21 in the second period, then they scored two goals in quick succession to start the third period.

Before the Blizzards could lament a wasted chance at the upset, Becker pleaded with Clark to center the first line.

"He said he had a feeling he could score if he were on the ice and I finally said, 'eh, why not,'" Clark said. "And I'll be damned if he didn't make me a genius in 10 seconds."

When Becker scored his game winner, the Sarzonian fans in the stands started chanting, "overrated" at The Gulf States despite the Blizzards' attempts to quiet them down but when the final buzzer sounded, there was no quieting the fans or the team.

"We're going to enjoy it tonight but then we have to get right back at it," Clark said. "We know we've got a hard fight ahead of us."

The Blizzards play their next match against hosts Liverpool England, a team that beat them 5-4 in a game that saw the Blizzards set a record for most goals allowed in a single contest. The next highest total? Three against The Gulf States in this match.

"Our defense and goaltending have been great with one exception," Clark said. "We're going to have to face the same team that solved Snowie. Hopefully, he'll be able to make adjustments to their shooters."

Blizzards come up short, 2-1

Coach Howard Clark and the Sarzonian ice hockey team knew they couldn't expect to perform miracles in their first-ever Cherry Cup appearance with the Cup now in its seventh installment, but the team's latest loss still hurt. The Blizzards lost 2-1 to host country Liverpool England, officially eliminating the team from contention for a knockout stage berth.

"We knew going in that we'd be fighting the odds if we wanted to advance to the next round, but when you lose close games, it's tough," Clark said. "Forget the rankings and forget the fact that we've only been together a short while. We had our chances." His voice trailed off and he looked away. "Our guys left it all on the ice and I'm so proud of them," he said, fighting back tears.

Sarzonia started out the better of the two teams, getting a goal from forward Marc Coulier after an opening flurry. Coulier jumped on a loose puck at center ice and broke in alone on the Liverpool England goalie and beat him through the five hole at 11:56 of the first period.

Before the Blizzards could celebrate very long, Liverpool England earned a controversial power play when forward Albert Cronin was sent off for boarding on what even many in the highly partisan Liverpool England crowd thought was a clean check. The hosts scored their power play goal with 11 seconds remaining in the two minute minor at 14:03 and the Blizzards were deflated.

"That power play goal was a killer," goalie Brian Snow (26 saves) said. "If we get that call, who knows?" Liverpool England scored again with 12 seconds left in the period when defenseman Bill Langham mishandled a pass from Snow and Liverpool England's top left wing scored.

"We just did the simple things wrong," Langham said. "That goal was my fault."

The Blizzards (3-5-1, seven points) will face Oliverry in their Cherry Cup finale with nothing but pride left to play for. Assistant Coach Marty Banneker said goalie Tim Collins would make his first start for the team.

"We need to give Snowy a rest and we need to see what Timmy can do for us," Banneker said. "Brian has done yeoman's work for us all tournament. We don't know what we have with Tim."

But Sarzonia's hockey fans learned a lot about what they have with the Blizzards: A hard-working team that plays tough defense and has great goaltending and needs one or two big time scorers to move on to the next level.

"When we've had a chance to look back on this Cherry Cup, it was a real growing experience and it was a chance for us to play together as a team and play well," Banneker said. "We only had one bad [defensive] game, and that was against Liverpool England. We only had one game that was completely out of hand and we won that game [7-2 over Oliverry at the end of the first leg]. We'll be back and we have the chance to play well."

Having said that, I knew going in that the chances of my team making it to the second round were pretty remote under the original system. Oliverrian team surprised by the victory

Liverpool England- Yes! All the Oliverrian nation is happy. After a crual lost in the NS Bowl competition, an Oliverrian team won a game. And, with some little lucky charms falling on Earth, Oliverry is qualified for the Knock-out competition. When the nation learned that, everyone in bars were screaming(with some people having to go to hospitals. The Oliverrian Ministry of Health has a preliminary result about that but there was atleast 200 people with a torned tympanum): we won it. we go to the knock-out phase. Oliverry Airlines bought 1000 tickets the next Oliverrian game and has done a duo "Return ticket-Go see the Oliverrian game". They were given to the population by a draw in all medias in Oliverry except websites and newspaper.

Now, here was the game summary:

Coach Gibouère was very happy for the win of his team.

-"4-2 is a superb game said Gibouère after the win. The goalie was at top shape and yes, we did it. we qualified for the knock-out phase with a surprizingly 3rd place in Group C!

But, we could not do it without supporters. Thanks to everyone in Oliverry. Everyone that watched us in this tourney, that hoped for us since the last minute of the preliminary phase. Thank you

Greenlanders Eliminated!
Gulls advance as well

LIVERPOOL ENGLAND -- "Ha!" shouted J. Gershwald Muddersplut, Grand Poobah of the Gulls Fanclub and Mocking President Aglukark Society, "Take that, Susan! Cull our national bird and occasional sports mascot, will you?"

Kalaallit Nunaat's loss in the quarterfinals has been attributed to Iansisle's smashing victory in the Hockey War of '06. Whereas the Greenlanders concentrated on killing seagulls, attacking Iansislean shipping, and making vaguely threatening speeches, the Gull Flaggers decided to use their most deadly weapon - punnery. Within weeks, the Greenlanders had the words played right out from under them.

On the other hand, Kalaallit Nunaat's loss - combined with Kaze Progressa falling - have left Iansisle and Soviet Haaregrad as the only bona fide Cherry Cup veterans. Unless, of course, our research department (who relied mostly on generalizations and vague memories) is wrong, as is quite possible, even probable.

Team captain B.J. MacPherson was quoted as saying "I think this is the year the Gulls gain a Cherry Cup title to go along with their plethora of Taylor Cups. And to think - they said that hockey shouldn’t be played at 32º North! Ha!”

Liverpool England Fall At Home

Liverpool England has lost the Cherry Cup 7 final at home to Iansisle in overtime. After the game, the coach was overheard giving Iansisle's coach congratulations. The 4-3 game ended in the seventh minute of overtime after an icing call was capitalised on by Iansisle. Ice Hockey is the last major sport Liverpool England participates in but have failed to win a major championship. They will try again in Cherry Cup 8, hoping to win it after the Footie and Field hockey 8th Worl Cups.

Even though cheers could still be heard from the crowds at the Sports Center, Director of Sports Sir Gregory Penns-McCormick was already dancing around his office.

"Just look, Buton! It only took us six Cherry Cups, but we've done it at last! - oh, have you drawn up the list of countries to call and gloat in triumph at?"

"So far I have Starblaydia, Kalaallit Nunaat, and Audioslavia," confirmed his assistant. "Erm, is there anyone else I should add? I was thinking about Tanah Burung..."

"Nonsense, man, time is of the essence!" Sir Gregory picked up a telephone. "Hello, operator? Yes, I'd like a direct line to Greenland, sharp as you care - no, I don't care, anywhere in Greenland will do...

"Hello, am I speaking to a Greenlander? Yes, this is an Iansislean - just wondering if you happened to see the game? You know, the one where Kevin St Jacques WON US THE CHERRY CUP!?...hello?"

Sir Gregory glanced at the other man with a pained expression. "She hung up."

"How surprising," said Buton without a hint of emotion.

"Well, no matter. Operator, a direct line to Starblaydia, please!"

Mr and Mrs Garcia were sitting down to a lovely sunday lunch in front of the TV and a nice glowing fire. The phone rang.

"If that's someone else to congratulate us on our son Jesus playing for the Under-Twenty-Ones in the Ninth Under-21 World Cup, rip the cord out of the socket." Enrique Garcia said. "And if its your mother again, do the same."

"'You're such a troublemaker, Enrique," his wife said, picking up the phone, "Hello?"

...

"Yes, this is a Starblaydi number.

...

"The what Cup?

...

"Cherry Cup? Oh no, I'm afraid I don't know anything about that.

...

"Now look, Ian or Kevin, if either of those is your real name, if you don't start talking sense I'm going to put my husband on the line.

...

"Hello?" Maria put the phone down. "These kids today, Enrique, I think they're all on smack or blow or something."

"Eh? Turn up the TV, Maria, the sport is coming on. Cherry Cup Seven Final highlights. Bloody Iansislanders..."

Coach Howard Clark had just finished a conference call with members of the Sarzonian ice hockey federation when the phone rang.

"Howard Clark.

"Uh, no, this isn't Audioslavia. You've reached the coach of the Sarzonian ice hockey team. No, we're the Blizzards. I'm sorry, I don't have the number for Audioslavia or The Gulf States. Bye."

Clark slammed the phone down.

"Damn it, why couldn't you handle it Bernice," he asked the team secretary.

"I was just in the restroom. I am allowed to go to the restroom, right?"

"Oh, sorry."

"What is it? More crank calls from those damn Starblaydis?"

"No, Iansisle."

"Did they just win the Cherry Cup."

"Yeah."

"They must be gloating," Bernice rolled her eyes theatrically. Clark, a man not known for his sense of humour, cracked up at the sight. The two decided to call it a day and go home to their families. The call from the Iansislers would be dinner table conversation for sure.

Bi Kikere sat by her phone, waiting. Sure, the minister for defence & sports was fighting a war, but this was something far more important: the Cherry Cup. She had her excuse-cards all lined up: it's too cold for hockey in Liverpool England, the best players had all been conscripted into the army, the team had taken some bad LSD, the truly polite champion lets someopne else garner the laurels ... but the phone just didn't ring. There was no one calling to gloat.

Perhaps they're being gracious winners over in Iansisle, she thought. Hah. And perhaps the sky is mauve over there too.

With a sigh, she decided the call wasn't coming. Well, puck 'em. She fired off an e-mail to the Gulls coach.

I'm Cherry of wishing you the best on your Cup triumph, but please accept my congratulations on how well you blade.
