"I believe the honors are mine. Jacqueline, take out your file. Write down everything I say."
"Of course, Doctor Freedmyn."
"Where to begin... Entry seems to be bound oak sheets... Water damage from the tide. I expect the interior has been gutted. Whitestone archway, we might want to look for a quarry later. No lock per say, just seems to be hinged." Nudge. "Not incredibly fragile." The Doctor spread her hands on the door, and pushed it slightly. No more than an inch had it stood ajar when, with a crinkle, it crumbled to the floor in flakes. "I take that back. Incredibly fragile."
The Doctor was Department Chair of Research and Review, Ministry of Education. Reports had come in last year of the Elliana Ice Shelf thawing in the Northern Districts of the Federation. Often times this area, The Lowlands, were trapped under The Ice Shelf. Last summer though, thanks to our friend Global Warming, the Shelf had melted almost completely and vanished with the Tide. Originally it was thought that what was revealed were only ancient coral reefs of the Arctic, yet the Ministry was pleasantly surprised with what actually was there.
'Twas a City.
"Note that it's not fragile due to rotting or decay, but the hinges have been torn by the water- What-in-the-name-of-Ali."
"What-in-the-name-of-Ali, Doctor?"
When scouting had begun it was discovered that the Village was used a Port. It wasn't the most grandeur of locations, far from it, but the significance of what has been found so far is astounding. Agriculture, for one thing, is what shocked many of the Researchers. Whatever plants were cultivated were long since gone, yet how the people respected and cared for them still remained in traces. Agriculture indicated Learning, Learning indicated Civilization, and so on and so forth. This Flower though, had yet to be discovered.
Oh wait, never mind. If I had taken a moment to stop rambling, I could point you right back to the Doctor and what she had just found. Go on, guess what she just found.
The Doctor crossed through the doorway and into the Home, taking only a few steps further inside to stand clear of what remained of the door. Her gaze was locked on the floor as she stooped down, as she brushed aside various litter with both hands. "A fresco on the floor... These people knew artwork. Astonishing... These Roses are the most detailed I've ever seen..." A wave to her Aide. "Jacqueline, this Art. These Roses..."
"Doctor... How is this possible. None of the Districts have hosted Roses. These ancients-"
"The detail... The most Astonishing, Roses."
"Of course, Doctor Freedmyn."
