NSTA International Open (Tennis)
One Red Dot
16-11-2004, 19:43
This thread is to introduce to NationStates a new roleplaying sport: Tennis. I'm hoping that this IS the first independent tennis tournament, so that I can claim it is inaugural. Muahaha.... anyway...
The NSTA (NS Tennis Association) consists of three Grand Slams hosted by One Red Dot, Kaze Progresa and Cockbill Street and of course, other minor tournaments hosted by those that are interested.
Currently, we are conducting signups for the Red Dot Open and played in the Narronin Tennis Complex in Burrington. The competition are Men Singles and Women Singles. The competition allows up to 4 representatives per nation (numbers changed as of 6 Dec). As this is the first tournament, there wil be no rankings, everything will be random, so to gain an advantage, you can convert to Randomism. The Open is accepting 32 players for both Singles tournaments and is a knockout system. (numbers changed as of 28 Nov)
Scoring is based on RL tennis. If you don't know how it is done, then look here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis#Scoring_a_set). A 6-6 tiebreaker is broken by the second method described. If you still don't get it, then just join, and figure it out... somehow... just don't ask about how scoring is done in the future.
I don't think I will be transparent about the scorination yet, but I can assure you that it is entirely fair, and entirely random (which isn't very fair). There is no home advantage and no RP bonus (yet, anyway, but RPs are encouraged).
There are no ranks or seeds, since this is the first tournament. These will be worked out using a variation of the KPB rankings. After rankings are set, then subsequent tournaments will have qualifiers.
The NSTA is also looking for sponsors to, as you guessed it, sponsor the tournaments.
To sign up for the Red Dot Open, use the following:

Male Entry: Dimitri Ackbar
Height: 6ft 6
Age: 16
Weight: 120-220 (Well defined despite age)
Facial Description: Typical High cheekbones noticeable in Russians, attached with rather long Jet-black hair
Skills and disadvantages: Because of his height, Dimitri is able to muster up a rather powerfull and accurate serve, whilst also due to his height helps him execute the smash. His backhand and Forehand our also very strong, as well as his unique ability to rush towards the nets and perform volley. If their is a weak point in his game it would be his rather weak lob and drop shots which is average at best. His cockiness is also reknowned though out his country and this can often get him in trouble with the judges.
Bio: Born from a family of communist leaders, Dimitri Ackbar failed to follow his father's footsteps and therefore sought another path which ultimately led to tennis. Since then he has never looked back and has become the countrys national champion and due to his age he is often considered the next Russian prodigy to brace the tennis scene.

We enter the Streetian Department of Sport, on a rainy Monday afternoon. The international version of the C-mail has just arrived (the one where they cut out all the dwarfish swearwords), and the headline catches the eye of the Minister, Thor Axewielder.
"STREET TO HOST TENNIS GRAND SLAM!"
Axewielder pondered this for a minute, before shouting out "Helen! Do we have a tennis court?"
Helen Carpenter, former Streetian defender and football captain, now clerk and general queen o' all trades, shouted back: "I think there is a couple up in Chesham...don't think they have stands, though, why?"
"Oh, just some Red Dot who claims we are going to host a Grand Slam tournament as a member of the NationStates Tennis Association..."
"Does that have anything to do with the talk you had with Faiwe Irafma about tennis the other day?" Carpenter was becoming a little suspicious.
"Yeah, well...but I only said that we were going to join in."
"Any free space on the budget?"
"No, everything is going to the new g'irgah...m'kairi, we'll just have to use the Grass Patch again, then..."
"Seems like it," Helen sighed.
(OOC info: for those of you who don't know the standard of the Roegrow Grass Patch, take the first football ground you played on as a kid. Add three times the amount of mud. Then you're about halfway there.)
Thor sighed, too, and went back to filling out forms...

The Grand Trunk company - responsible for all internal communication in bill Street - is willing to sponsor the NSTA, and also sponsor the construction of a new tennis arena in Chesham - to be ready for the Grand Slam - provided the Progressan S.A.D. are willing to construct such an arena.
The Streetian Department of Sport would also like to suggest that the tournament is limited to 32 participants, seeing as that seems to be hard enough to attain - or, alternatively, allow each nation to send more participants.
7JM's tournament's have finally been announced.
The 7JM National Open has allways been held at the Morton Supercomplex but with the World Tour starting 3 tournaments have been announced.
The Mortonville International Masters.
The Gray City Trophy.
The Chamberlain State Shield.
The International Masters is a 16 man tournament with knock-out rules. First 16 in the world go through to the tournament. However if it is a grandslam all 32 of the best players come and play in the biggest sports arena in Arsenal and possibly the world. 5 courts support this 2 week tournament.
The Gray City Trophy is a 32 player trophy spread over 2 venues with 2 courts on the Old City Complex and 2 on the New Sport Complex. 1 week to be the best of the 2nd city.
The Chamberlain State Shield is a 16 player trophy with 1 7JM player needed. The Shield was made upon the state's founder's 5th win of the State Playoff and quickly rose to National prominance.

Scores will come after I scorinate in a few hours
South Osettia
26-12-2004, 16:23
It's summer in South Osettia, and with the football season at its end, the people have been looking for a new sport to follow. After a recent newspaper article on the sport, tennis has grown in popularity, and the country has entered its best three players into the ORD Tennis Open. Requso Makinov and Gradi Jarenko will play in the mens' singles tournament, whilst Olga Waqasie will compete in the womens' singles tournament. After a long wait for the tournament to start, the first round fixtures have been announced.
Makinov will face Anders Manson of Legalese in his first ever international match. As South Osettia's number one, a lot of pressure will be on his shoulders for him to progress. We caught up with him at a photo shoot for his new clothing range, RM01.
"I've got a fifty-fifty chance of getting through this match, but I want to improve my odds as much as possible. I've eaten nothing but strawberries and cream for the past two months, and I've been toning my thighs for the ladies all night."
Jarenko's first match will be against Ashton Skruid from Fmjphoenix. Jarenko lost to Makinov in the final of the SO Tennis Tournament, but he has not let the defeat phase him.
"Just because I lost to Makinov, dosen't make me crap. I beat 256 other players to get to that final, so I'm confident that I'm not the worst player out there. If anybody wants to challenge that fact, then I'd be more than willing to crush them to a pulp."
South Osettia's female representative, Waqasie, will play Liz Wignall from 7JM. There have been rumours that Wignall will not show up for the tournament in the light of political unrest in 7JM, but Waqasie has decided to turn up just in case.
"If I didn't turn up and in the end she did turn up, then she'd have no-one to play, and she'd go through, and I'd go out, and that wouldn't be very good, because I would go home, and that would be embarrassing, because I beat others to get here, and they'd be annoyed, and they might make fun of me, and I wouldn't be able to take that, because I'd probably start crying, and so they'd probably laugh at me, and that would be even more embarrassing, so I'm probably going to turn up, just in case."
We wish our representatives the best of luck in their totally random games, and hope that they get further than the first round, otherwise we might have to start laughing at them until they decide to leave the country for good.

South Osettia
26-12-2004, 16:50
The first round of the ORD Open saw two of the three South Osettian players make it through to the second round.
Gradi Jarenko saw off Ashton Skruid of Fmjphoenix in an exciting five set match. Jarenko took the frst two sets 6-3 and 6-2, before a spirited fightback from Skruid saw him claw it back to two sets apiece, winning 0-6 and 4-6. In the deciding set, Jarenko overcame his mid-match wobble to win 6-3, giving him a three sets to two win.
"It was a tough game. All credit to Ashton, but when you come up against a superior player like me, the result is always going to be inevitable. I now believe that I am the number one player in South Osettia, so hah! In your face Makinov!"
Indeed, Requso Makinov was to be on the first flight home, as he was beaten in three straight sets by Legalese player Anders Manson. It appears that a bad strawberry was the cause of Makinov's lacklustre performance; as he lost the final set 6-3, he rushed off to the toilets where he remained for the next hour. We finally got a word with him after everyone else had left the court.
"I'm disappointed, of course I am. I mean, where's the hundreds of screaming women, begging for my autograph and marvelling at my meticulously bronzed legs? Just because I lost, doesn't make me a loser with the ladies too, does it? Does it? Oh God, it does!"
South Osettia's only female contender, Olga Waqasie, successfully dispatched of 7JM's Liz Wignall by two sets to one. In a closely fought contest, Waqasie took the early advantage, winning 6-1. Wignall fought back, winning the next set 1-6, but Waqasie regained her composure to win the final set 6-0.
"I was so glad I turned up today, because I thought about booking myself in for a massage, but Mum said 'No, Liz might turn up', and I said 'Doubt it, Ma', and she said 'Maybe you should go anyway, you might meet a nice boy', and I said 'Shut up, Ma, I've already got a boyfriend', and she said 'Yeah, but I dont like him his eyes are too close together', and I said 'Yeah, but he's a cyclops', and she said 'I know', and I decided to go then to shut her up, because she was annoying me, and it turns out the Liz turned up anyway, so that was good."
So, with two competitors left, hopes are high that at least one will get through to the next round.

Streetians Bow Out At Tennis
All Four Competitors Out At First Stage
It was a dismal day in One Red Dot for Streetian tennis, as our four athletes began their international careers by losing in the first round. Most of the players bowed out with a whimper - Callum McGrath managing three games out of 21 in his match against Mohammad Khallid of Hiiraan, and Irene Hammar losing her first set 0-6 against Laila Bordon on her way to a straight-sets defeat. The only one who looked remotely capable of winning his game was the dwarf Harald Beerquaffer, who won twelve successive games against Nieder Ostland's Manfred Heinze and led the match 2-1 in sets - only to bow out 0-6 in the fourth and 4-6 in the fifth, having some sort of control at four-all but failing to hold his own serve and losing the match on that.
With this kind of play, the Roegrow Open will look increasingly dismal for the Streetian audience. It is only to hope that experience will strengthen their ability to come down in crunch situations, and that we can maybe get someone into the quarter-finals at our own soil.
(OOC: aren't there a lot of 0-6s? Seems a bit unrealistic...then again, I don't follow tennis that closely...)
Hello World: Mens Take the Wins to the Bank
A mens Succuess, Women Lose
The Hiiraan Men have Won Both their Matches, Shutting Out the Legalese and the Streetian But unfourtunenelty the Women’s Center Court Saw a different disaster, the women Both Failed to gain success and win their matches.
The First match of the day came when Mustafa Murkame Faced His Legalese Opponent Who was in particularly ready to achieve a win, Nickerson, the Legalese Opponent Achieved a moderate Success in His Home nation Legalese, unfortunately he could not translate that in the court today when he lost the first set 6-1, a complete Shutout and the second set also added more of shutting for him after the Hiiraanian player Murkame shut the legalese 6-2, the losses Continued for the legalese opponent in the 3rd set when he lost 7-5.
Mohamed Khallid Of Hiiraan Also Left the Court Smiling Today after He won all of His sets against Callum McGrath, The First second and third sets Were WON by 6-2, 6-1, 6-0.
The nation was Hoping for the same results from the Women, but they were Shut out and lost to their Opponents, They are expected or should we say, the nation is hoping they can win their next matches.

South Osettia
27-12-2004, 14:12
On the eve of the South Osettian players' second round ties, we decided to send them fruit hampers as a bribe for doing a live interview. Both readily accepted the proposal, and here they are now.
ME: Gradi, your next opponent is Mohamud Khallid from Hiiraan. People from this country are known for their brashness and their egos; what do you have to say to your opponent?
GJ: Well, all I can say is there's only room for one ego in this game, and that's mine. Anyone that wants to challenge me to an ego test, they're welcome to, but I'll beat them to a mushy pulp.
ME: Olga, your next opponent is from Undria, a nation I've never heard of before. How will you go into tomorrow's match?
OW: Well, I thought I'd wear a tennis costume, because that's what you're supposed to wear to a tennis match, but I wanted it to be a bit different, so it's pink, and I wanted my boyfriend to come in a matching costume, but he wasn't too comfortable with the pink, so I said 'Oh, don't worry, you can wear what you want,' and he said 'Oh, that's alright then,' but then I painted everything in his wardrobe pink, so now he has to wear somethink pink, unless he goes wearing nothing, which would be quite embarrassing, and I might have to dump him.
ME: I was talking more about your opponent than your clothes.
OW: Yeah I know, but I thought I would tell you about my costume, because it really is very nice, and it was going to be done by some Italian designer, but we couldn't find one, so we settled for somene from Liechtenstein, but anyway, I think I have a good chance of winning tomorrow, and if I don't I may have to start crying because I really want to win tomorrow, so that I can get more money, and spend it on a new wardrobe, that's going to be pink, and possibly white, but definitely not black, because I don't like it, because that's what you wear to a funeral, and I'm not going to a funeral, except maybe my own, but hopefully that won't be for a while yet, hopefully.
ME: Right...Gradi, how have you been preparing for the match tomorrow?
GJ: Well I've been a little busy designing my victory plaque for this championship to practice.
ME: So you think you will win the whole tournament then?
GJ: I don't just want to be the best tennis player in South Osettia - I want to be the best in the world...well obviously I already am, I just need to prove it by winning a trophy.
ME: Okay I think I'm going to stop this interview now, Olga's scaring me.
Hopefully Jarenko can, as Hiiraanians would put it, 'shut out' his opponent tomorrow, but whilst confidence is overflowing in the SO camp, luck is something that we still need to observe if one or both players are to bring back some silverware from this totally random competition.

Sucess for Women in One Red Dot
Failure in the Men's tournament disapoints many, however...
Yesterday in One Red Dot, Korinthian Tennis Players Marina Kaperonis and Angelika Christoforaki both won their matches at the ORD Grand Slam, the new premeire NS Tennis Tournament, while male player Christos Manolakis is defeated in first round of play.
Marina Kaperonis, the star 17-year-old tennis player/model from Syracuse, defeated Anya Kruchina of Fmjphoenix [FMJ] at the ORD Tennis Grounds in her first match 6-2. In the next match Kaperonis took both sets winning the game 6-0, eliminating Kruchina from the tournament. In the next rouond, Kaperonis will meet Regena Dacres of Sliponia, who beat opponent Jubilae Entarpas of Kaze Progressa 6-1 and then 6-3. In an interview with sports magazine Atleti Settimanali she said she was optimistic about the upcoming game, and is hoping for a win. The upcoming matches will be close, but Kaperonis is expected to win.
Angelika Christoforaki, the 19-year-old tennis player/model/actress/heiress also won in One Red Dot as she defeated Bakka Bakka Jihad of Towlieban 6-0 in her first match, followed by an easy 6-1 win also sending her to the next round of play in ODR. The easy win against Jihad, eliminating the Towliebanian from the tournament was projected as Christoforaki is the top ranked Korinthian Female Tennis Player. Christoforaki will meet Dusk Liege of Audioslavia tommorow in her next game, whom she is expected to defeat.
Christos Manolakis, the 23-year-old tennis player/model/actor, however lost to Dimitri Ackbar of Northern Albania in all three of his matches, the scores being 6-3, 6-0, and 6-1. Manolakis was dissapointed with his lost in ODR however he returned to Korinthos today to continue filming of his new move "Fossil". He will return to international tennis, but some are wondering if he will replaced as the premier male tennis player of Korinthos.

All 3 Fmjphoenix competitors lose in first round
All 3 of the tennis players that Fmjphoenix sent forth to play in the first NSTA lost. It is a tough thing for them to accept, but in a bit of consolation, at least they all got a chance to play. Maybe next time.

South Osettia

Both of South Osettia's tennis players made it through to the quarter finals of their respective tournaments, putting them in the top eight in the world in the men and women rankings (Jarenko in the men's and Waqasie in the women's, obviously).
Gradi Jarenko beat Mohamud Khallid of Hiiraan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, in a very one-sided affair which saw him win in just under one hour. This win has done nothing to deflate Jarenko's already bulging ego.
"Yeah - I'm so the best in the world. Nobody can stop me, not even a Hiiraanian! I'm gonna celebrate by mass-producing 'winner' plaques and badges and selling them to people at over-extortionate prices! Did I mention I'm better than Makinov?"
Indeed he did.
In the women's competition, Olga Waqasie dispatched her Undrian opponent Maria Dharan with a two sets to one victory, 0-6, 6-0, 6-0. Surprisingly, Olga's message was short and succinct.
"Today was tough, because I lost the first set 6-0, so I had to win the last two, but luckily I did, so that's alright then, because it means I won, and I go through to the quarter finals, which is good."
Well, it was short and succinct for her - have you seen her other interviews?

Adam Islanders Out Early
Jun 1985 - One Red Dot - The Mens and Womens' tennis players from Adam Island were eliminated early in the One Red Dot Open. The ORD Open is the first Grand Slam of the first year of competition in the NSTA, the international body for tennis events. The tournament is divided into seperate competitions for men and women, much to the chagrin of AI's citizens. But they respect the different cultural standards of the various nations involved and only a couple thousand One Red Dot flags were burned by AI fans during the matches.

Kaze Progressa
02-01-2005, 12:27
A relatively disappointing performance from all the Progressan players in One Red Dot, with only one making the quarter-final - Elinotie Harbiali, who defeated Siobahn Delaney of Audioslavia in three sets and Bakka B N Ali in straight sets (a 6-1 6-1 destruction) before coming a spectacular cropper against Theresia Mehlinger, losing 6-0 6-4 in the quarter-final.
'It's a strange environment out there. It seems as though everyone's confidence is completely changed once there's a break in serve - it's having an enormous impact out there,' said Harbiali, who was both a beneficiary and a loser from this phenomenon. 'Perhaps the hologram theory of the Excelites is right, and these holograms lack persistance.'
Meanwhile, Casee Bajazan was a second-round faller to Erin O'Riley, having destroyed Sara Zettergren 6-1 6-1 in the second and third sets of the opening-round clash after a 6-0 collapse in the first set (poisoning is a distinct possibility in explaining this strange score), while Jubilae Entarpas and sole male Quaza Qatilko both fell in the first round.
'We sucked,' said Entarpas bluntly. 'And we won't blame the scorinator because we are human beings and not Excel-powered holograms.'
