Birth of The Albertan Reich

The Albertan Reich

The Albertan Reich was, by all accounts, born of a people and place gripped by fear, tension, and anxiety. Indeed, it would seem that states such as this, totalitarian states with no regard for the welfare of their people, can only arise in times of great desperation. On the eve of the Albertan provincial elections it could be felt by all that this election would be of great historical significance, that a profound change was about to take place, that this change would be irreversable. Albertans had been waiting for this election a long time, they had been waiting to unleash their fury on the inept Conservative government through their votes. After the resignation of Premier Curtis Shale, his successor, Frank Paldrey, dared reign only two months before sucumbing to public pressure and calling the election. Now, the fate of Alberta lay in the hands of its voters, and the voters were displeased. On January 1, 2024, the citizens of Alberta voted the Conservatives out of office. Luther von Palatinat, leader of The Albertan National Socialist Party, had been elected Premier by a slim yet sufficient majority.

Post-election turmoil ensued. There was wide speculation as to how exactly the federal government would react to a Nazi taking the Albertan Premiership. Rumors flew. Some said that the Prime Minister was prepared to declare a state of emergency, and remove the new Premier by military force if need be. Others speculated that the new Premier would not wait for the Prime Minister to make the first move, but would declare Alberta's seperation and march on Ottawa with all possible haste. Many feared an uprising from the new opposition, the New Democratic Party, or at least a general strike and the lockdown of factories. On January 2, thousands of New Democrats took to the streets throughout Alberta, calling for von Palatinat's immediate resignation. Their leaders even contacted the armed forces, encouraging them to take military action against the usurper. It seemed that Luther von Palatinat's Premiership was doomed to end before it had even rightly begun.

Indigo himself, although away in discussion with world leaders abroad had most certainly noticed the birth of the Albertan Reich, and a National Socialist himself, he had also noted the turmoil of which Luther von Palatinat, and his regime appeared to be in. Internal pressure had already mounted against him and his rulingship, which could very well erupt into a full blown civil war. It didnt take a genius to understand that total war could start with just a seed.

Anyhow, even if intervention was minimal, Indigo thought it nessasary that he at least make an attempt to help turn the minds and hearts of the people. And so with the assistance of the Nationalist Propeganda Departments, he released a television advertisement, to be shown all over the screens of the Albertan Reich.

Showing just black, a deep rumbling subtly came into existance, becoming stronger and stronger for several seconds. Audiences at this time could do little but pause and watch. Once their attention had been gained for several seconds at least, the picture all of a sudden showed horiffic scenes of war, death and poverty... then the screen fades to black.

As the attention of those abroad have now been gripped in suspense, small words come onto the screen, so small the people must squint to read them, yet interesting enough to make them want to strain their own vision to understand its message; "An orderless nation, is one filled with death..."

The screen flashes quickly with the most disgusting crimes of war, then flashes back to the black with writing... another section has been added to the text; "poverty..."

The screen once again flashes with scenes which would shock even those most desensitised, this time of children suffering from malnutrition, parents crying, and the entire truckloads of children bodies being dumped into a pit... then once again it fades to black, showing a new section on the text; "And destruction..."[/i]

This time, the screen pauses just a second longer before showing scenes of a communist army surging forward into battle, switching from the scenes of death and killing, and back to the communists pushing forward... the music now plays strongly, a classical song of war and destruction... And the screen slowly fades to black...

On the screen it now writes, "The dawn of a new beginning is upon us..."[/i], then it flashes to screens of Luther von Palatinat helping the world, speaking at large gatherings, gaining the global support he truly deserves... then the images are replaced by two words which then fade to nothing, "...of order..."

Luther did his best to ignore the shouts and chants of the protestors outside his party headquarters. He hated them, as much as they hated him, and would have liked very much to call some stormtroopers in to make a bloody mess of the demonstrators. He would have liked to, but made no move for the phone on his desk. He was now a government official, which meant, to his disdain, that he would have to play the role of the meak, civilized politician. At least until he had established his grip on the Premiership, that is.

He leaned back in the comfortable recliner which ordained his office, and with furrowed brow concentrated on the television which had just recently been spirited into his office. This was the third time he watched the mysterious televised message, he at once found it to be facinating and disturbing, and in general knew not what to think of it. The message ended, and the screen went black. Luther reached for the remote control to turn the TV off, and looked at Durden, his right hand, with questioning eyes.

"Its not ours." Durden said in response to his friend's questioning gaze. He removed himself from the desk on which he had been sitting, and made a couple of slow, meditative steps towards a window looking down at the protesting crowd.

"Well then what the fuck?" Luther replied, leaning forward and resting his elbows on the desk.

"Its been broadcast from an outside source. And not as in outside of our circle, I mean outside of the country, the signal is foreign." Durden lit a cigarette and looked down at his feet, contemplating his own words.

"Well, that's just.....its just fucked, my friend. How the hell can some foreign variable just hijack our broadcasting system? How the hell is that possible. I must say that I find this situation to be highly unacceptable." Luther made a horrible grimace, and lit a cigarette himself, sucking on it furiously.

"Heads will role, Lu. I'll be god damned if something like this would be allowed to happen on our watch. In the meanwhile-"

"In the meanwhile," Luther cut him off, "find out who our secret benefactor is. Not that I'm not greatful for the support, but I'm very curious as to who the fuck takes such an interest in keeping us in power."

Durden put out the cigarette and began moving toward the door. "Something tells me we won't be looking long. Whoever it is, I got the feeling they're going to want to make themselves known." He opened the office door, and adjusted himself.

"And would you please do something about those god damn commies out there. They're giving me a fucking migrane." Luther put his head in his hands.

Durden smiled sympatheticaly toward his friend. "You got it Lu. Get some rest, will ya." With that he walked out the door, leaving the Premier to wearly ponder his many worries.

Luther spent the next several hours hold up in his office, pacing up and down, rocking in his recliner, and constantly writing down the thoughts going through his head on a scrap of paper. He was constantly planning, constantly coniving, both for his present problems as well as for the future. He felt somewhat like a prisoner, but he knew that in times like this it was best to watch ones enemies, and to wait for an opportunity to turn fortune in ones own direction.

Luther's situation was not as hopeless as it seemed to the uninformed. He had anticipated how various factions would react were he elected to the Premiership, and had prepared to the best of his ability a counterstrategy for the inevitable challengers of his authority. He had secured for himself the support of the vanquished Conservative Party in exchange for a couple of ministries, and with the same had opened the way for serious dialogue with the Albertan financial elite. Conservative support in the house would also play a crucial part in the planned push for Albertan sovereignty. He hoped that this alliance, precarious as it was, would give him enough of an edge to successfuly defend against New Democrat and Liberal opposition.

Perhaps a more serious threat to him was Henry Hartridge, the Canadian Prime Minister, who had often commented that he would not stand by idely and watch a "Nazi hatemonger" take office in any of his provinces. In response, Luther befriended Hartridge's son, Oscar, eventually drew him into the party, and through personal, ruthless indoctrination, turned him into a Nazi fanatic. The young Oscar had spent the past several months preaching Nazism at his father behind closed doors. Luther couldn't know what results his friend's efforts would yield, and could only hope that the Prime Minister would at least assume a position of neutrality.

On the morning of the third of January, while having breakfast with Durden, Luther received a telephone call from Ottawa. The pleasant young lady on the other side informed him that the Prime Minister wished to meet with him, behind closed doors, at his residence in Ottawa the very next morning. Luther hung up the phone, and grinned widely at Durden. Face-to-face manipulation was his greatest talent.

Messages broadcasted over the television waves within the Albertan Reich were quite certainly noticed. Spies and a variety of intelligence sources had noted to Indigo himself that Luther von Palatinat had most definatly become inquisitive as to its source. Although Indigo wondered why he would find it difficult, he decided that he would make himself known to Luther, just Luther; for it was important that he knew who his friends were. Quickly, a letter had been drafted, and a seal of wax had been emplaced upon its envelope.

To the man known as Luther von Palatinat,

I am rather convinced that you are aware of the messages shown across your national waves, promoting you and your regime as the rightful one to have power within the Albertian Reich. And although we would like our identity to remain as secretive as possible, perhaps it may be the best that at least you know personally who is responsible for the deed committed.

I, Indigo Blue, Fuhrer of the Nationalist Repubblica of Austar Union take full responsibility on behalf of my propeganda department, for the television advertisements being broadcasted across your nation. Perhaps you may find this an intrusion, perhaps you may find this a positive interest. Anyhow, now that you know, it truly is your choice what exactly you do wish to do with the information I have provided you.

Yours Truly,

Fuhrer Indigo Blue
