Factfile: Isam, the Holy Christian Empire of

Isam
07-11-2004, 20:15
Background:
The Holy Christian Empire of Isam is large nation once commonly associated with genocide, religious oppression and a total, unwavering faith. However, it has recently undergone a long period of isolationism following the death of the Holy Father Thomas Saril. During Saril’s reign the Holy Empire underwent a period of expansionism unrivalled in Isam’s long history, bringing many smaller nations underfoot on flimsy pretexts and welding them into the Imperial Faith Dominion. However, before the expansionism got too out of hand the Lord Secretary (name undisclosed at present) succeeded in reigning in Saril’s ambitions. Rather than remain the IFD, the Lord Secretary formed the Imperial Faith Union.

Isam is a nation built around one principle, a principle which wholly dominates every aspect of everyday life in the Empire. Faith. To the Hierarchy of Isam, race, colour and place of origin are irrelevant, as long as a person Believes in the Church of Isam. Holy Mother Church demands absolute obedience from her subjects, an obedience enforced by the Church’s Holy Chaplaincy. Uncounted numbers of civilians were killed every year by the Chaplains and the Nazareth Stormtroopers due to perceived Heresy. Despite, or perhaps because of this the crime rate in Isam is virtually nil, and citizens go about their daily lives without fear of theft, murder or any of a host of other crimes. Ironically, the people are kept safe by the very institutions that have killed more of them than any other cause of death.

The citizens of Isam live by a very strict code of Faith and Duty. A civilian has few rights, and few freedoms but almost none of them seem unhappy with their lots – probably due to the way that the way that they are educated. People are taught the Faith of Isam from the moment they start schooling, often before, and are deeply indoctrinated with the idea that the Church Knows Best. Even people who have had relatives killed by Chaplains or Nazareth seem almost determined to keep their Faith.

Military:
Isam is defended by her substantial armed forces, who maintain a watch upon everyone entering or leaving the Isam Nation. Some twenty-one million troops stand combat-ready at any given time, divided into the Seven Armies of Isam, also standing by the Seven Navies and Seven Air-Fleets. In addition, almost every civilian is required to undergo military training and service at some point in their lives. In such a manner is Isam guarded – its very people will rise up to defend their oppressors.

Religion:
Population: 2.4 billion at time of writing
% Church of Isam: 98%
% Non-Isam Christian: 1%
% Jewish: 0.5%
% Islamic: 0.3%
% Other monotheistic: 0.2%

In the Holy Christian Empire of Isam the Church dominates every aspect of day-to-day life. The Church of Isam is the standard faith, with other doctrines making up only 2% of the population, none of which is polytheist or atheist. The Hierarchy continually works to ensure that the population continue worshipping along their lines rather than anyone else’s by removing certain rights from non-Church of Isam faiths, with rights decreasing the further one gets from the Isam Faith Bible. Far worse, however, is the fate that awaits polytheists and atheists. If they are found by the Chaplains they can face one of three penalties for their heresy – Exile/Deportation, Imprisonment or Execution.

However, philosophers practising in Isam are given a fairly free reign to discuss the existence of God, with one small limitation. Their conclusion must be approved by the Chaplaincy, and it is a foolish man indeed who comes to a conclusion that the Chaplaincy do not like.
