Republican Lawrence Eagleton wrapped up the election last night by beating Democrat challenger Ronald Gephardt. The hard-fought and sometimes bitter election was highlighted by the scandals that paralyzed the Gephardt campaign during the final weeks of the campaign. Libertarian Jeff Ontario and other minority party candidates were only able to gain 5% of the popular vote.
Voter turnout was extremely high, with 90% of the electorate casting votes.
Final results (popular vote <> electoral vote):

Eagleton/Jones (R) – 1,434,074 <> 287
Gephardt/Lieberman (D) – 1,344,444 <> 251
Ontario/Campagna (L) – 29,877 <> 0
Others – 119,506 <> 0

Liocia is broken down into electoral districts (states), with each district having a certain number of electoral votes proportional to that district’s population. 270 electoral votes are needed for a candidate to be victorious in a presidential election.

Gephardt’s concession speech was conciliatory, and offered a hope for national unity and support for the new president, stressing that the nation is new and needs stability and unity in order to build a strong foundation for the future.

President-Elect Eagleton, in his normal soft-spoken voice spoke about the importance of a strong economy and protecting civil freedoms. A right-leaning Republican, Eagleton will most likely concentrate on economic and security issues during his administration. He closed his speech by saying, “I am only here because Liocia is free”

Public reaction was mixed, ranging from disappointment among liberals to elation among conservatives. Most wonder though whether President-Elect Eagleton will be able to achieve much receiving only 48% of the vote and no clear mandate.
