The History of Sarzonia

[OOC: This is an attempt to carve out a history of Sarzonia that I believe makes some sense. Feedback is encouraged.

The Incorporated States of Sarzonia was founded on 22 March 2004, but traces its history farther back. A group of citizens, disenchanted with the direction the now-defunct United States of America was headed in under President George W. Bush set out to form their own country based on a set of ideals that were very different.

A small group of settlers found what appeared to be a small set of islands in the south Atlantic and set up shop, not realizing that the island the landed upon was in reality much larger. To honor the leader of the small expedition, the settlers voted to name the country Sarzonia in the first action taken by what would become the country's Parliament. After some fits and starts, the settlers began to construct cities and towns and spread themselves farther inland.

Eventually, the group decided to come together and form their own country. As the United States was beginning to dissolve, it could do little to offer any resistance and officially recognized the fledgling country's independence on 22 March. Suddenly, Sarzonia was a country and the leadership of the country soon realized that it needed to establish laws and a military so the people would be safe.

A council of senior leaders chosen by the citizens of the new country and by Sarzo himself set out to draft a constitution (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=330340) and a Constitutional Convention approved the first 12 Articles on 25 May. Shortly after the Constitution itself was ratified, the voters approved the addition of Article XIII, an anti-discrimination amendment that included sexual orientation. Angry with this, the state of Bausch announced it was seceding from Sarzonia, beginning the Sarzonian Civil War (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=329842).

Sarzonians pride themselves on being a peaceful people, but have built a military that is strong enough to defend itself and its staunchest allies from attack. The pride and joy of the Sarzonian military is the Navy. Among the settlers who joined Sarzo on the expedition to found a new colony was Josiah Humphreys. One of his long-ago ancestors was famed shipbuilder Joshua Humphreys, who designed six frigates for the United States Navy during the late 1790s, including the famed USS Constitution, which was sold to Sarzonia in one of the last actions by the United States government and rests in the harbor in the country's largest city, Nicksia. Like his ancestor, Humphreys was also very much into ship design, and he brought with him a plan for the construction of ships in Sarzonia that carried the spirit of the super frigates of the United States Navy. That, along with a fascination with the navy on the part of the President led to the Incorporated Sarzonian Navy being the best developed of all five military branches in Sarzonia. Of the five branch Chiefs, the Navy Chief is the closest to being a cabinet level position separate from the Department of Defense.

In its more recent history, Sarzonia ended civil recognition of marriage (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=343286) despite opposition by several conservatives and joined several alliances including the Organisation of Maritime Powers, the ESUS, Victoria Alliance, NATO, and the United Medical Alliance.]
