The official NationStates DOGA Challenge!

Mostly through the medium of I.R.C, but occasionally forum-side, I've seen some very interesting and talented work with the graphics package D.O.G.A. Its become something of an unofficial N.S. Tool whe designing anything from personal weapons, to furniture, and space fleets. Indeed, such is the range of designs and various other works I'm suprised no one else has ventured an idea such as mine before.

I'm going to propose a semi-regular DOGA contest for those interested in sharpening their skills, or just having a place they can show off designs that don't by requirement have to fit into their IC Nation or technology state. With each contest, a theme will be chosen, and those participaitng will attempt to, within the best of their ability, answer the challenge.

The first such challenge was obviously one of the most difficult to nail down, but I've hit upon something that is related to a theme seen common enough in DOGA work, and as such...

The first of these NS DOGA Challenges is thus:-

Design and render an escape pod, or other life-raft structure, whose primary purpose is to safeguard the life/lives of the crew from which it departed.

The following applies-

Any other facility may be added to increase survivability, for example- Communication systems, thruster assemblies, and anything else your imagination lends you.

No limit exists on size, though common sense should be used. It may be a one-man unit, or multiple carrier.

Ideally, the challenge commences with immediate effect, as of the 16th October, concluding after a two-week period, on the 30th October.

If you would like, posts showing work-in-progresses, and for those wishing feedback on their current designs and trends, may reply here. Also, Nations taking part will have their names added thusly at the bottom of this post, once a number have opted to join.

I hope this proves as popular as I had pondered, and may it be the first of many!

This is a beta of an escape pod for ... well, something I'm planning to float directly over my Mars colony ... At best have mercy on me, at worst consider it to be some contrasting work to the really good stuff I know will turn up here shortly, ;)

I'll post up a few details here in an edit t'moz ... sleep soon ...

Details for now :

* I don't like textures, as this thing hides behind a covering on the hull, it is encased in an semi-armor smooth shell casing. Might as well look good while fucking off.

* I happen to like blue. And grey. And white. Pretty colours.

* The thing you may see on the front is my national flag. It is not the gay pride flag, :P

* Since the quickest way out is straight out, that is how it shoots clear of any primary structure. So, the armor-entry-port door with locking ring is at the back in a protective " tunnel " so to speak. Once your sealed in ( Oh, it holds two to three people in comfort ), the four engines can fire and thrust it away ...

Yeah, that's right. I'm a space nation. Who rendered a life raft for a surface ship. With a flag on it that isn't mine.

Deal.

This is the standard Federation Military Escape pod. It holds four people and approximately a month's worth of e-rats, along with other assorted survival supplies, such as tents and blankets and such. The wings extend on launch from a starship or station. It can land either under manual or computer control.

Well, here's my entry.

UCSNE Mk141 Mod Bravo Escape MinisubSubmarine
http://img101.exs.cx/img101/6238/escsub1.png
http://img101.exs.cx/img101/2005/escsub2.png

The Mk141 is a multipurpose series of submarines used in the UCSNE. Since the nation has many underwater mines and colonies, as well as underwater freighters and tankers to service them, the corporation that designed this multipurpose vehicle was allowed to make a civilian version marketable to these areas. It is also in use at military installations and subs. The 141 can sustain 10 people for up to a month (Underwater), and contains land and sea survival gear. It's hull can go to very high depths, but usually the vessel surfaces where it can use solar power to replenish it's energy, put less of a hold on the oxygen supplies, and increase chance of detection. But sometimes the air pressure makes this dangerous. The 141 can also serve as an ASDS vehicle, a salvage unit, and in many other roles.

Name: Mk. XVI Emergency Escape Pod
Type: Long Duration Emergency Habitat
Capacity: Sixteen
Maximum Operatable Time: Four Months
Designer: Knucklehead Aerospace

The Mk. XVI is an emergency escape pod designed to keep sixteen people alive for up to four months. It has enough fuel for it's thrusters to make it to a somewhat nearby habitable planet or moon, or if none is within range, a shipping lane. Since it was designed with the Earth-Mars trade routes in mind, it can make it from Earth to Mars with little problem. It's seats are arranged in two groups of eight around a centeral pillar, with toilet facilities in a group of eight stalls.

As it is designed to carry sixteen people, it is too large to be installed internally in most non-capital ships. As such, it has hard points on four rings around the hull, allowing it to be clamped onto the hull of smaller ships.

Furthermore, it has a large navigational computer in the nose that has information on a number of star systems within close proximity to Sol. The computer is also equipped with a multi-frequency distress beacon, and a communications array capable of contacting most known frequencies. To keep it's occupants from going insane while in deep space, there is also entertainment software installed.

Mark-11 Escape Pod

The standard in SDF escape pods these are mounted in sufficient numbers for complete evacuation of a ship in distress. They feature full planetfall capability as well as a secondary drive that allows the pod to be used as a 'hopper' with a limited range (200km). They are equipped with a chemical cold-sleep system for long term survival capability in case of a deep space accident. Their communications systems can access the long range GEC and SEC communication satillites for extended retrieval capability.

EV-OP-3 Atmospheric Entry Emergency Vehicle

The EV-OP-3 is designed to bring a large number of people onto a planet. It can be utilized as both a fast attack transport and an emergency escape transport. It is most commonly used for the latter. Mostly utilized in larger capitol ships or space stations.

A large amount of oxygen is contained on the craft, in case of malfunction of thrusters or if it is ejected in deep space.

The EV-OP-3 first engages its primary thruster after it has aimed itself at it's target landing coordinates.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Snow_Fall/DOGAContest/PodStage1.jpg

The EV-OP-3 only runs the engine for a short while until it runs out of the provided amount of fuel. Once it hits the atmosphere, it uses its heat shield to protect itself from entry into the atmosphere.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Snow_Fall/DOGAContest/PodStage2.jpg

Once in the atmosphere, the EV-OP-3 detaches the shield and connectors using precisely placed explosive charges.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Snow_Fall/DOGAContest/PodStage3.jpg

Once at a set altitude, the secondary thruster fires, slowing its decent.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Snow_Fall/DOGAContest/PodStage4.jpg

The secondary thruster shuts off just as the landing legs extend and the EV-OP-3 sets down.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v335/Snow_Fall/DOGAContest/PodStage5.jpg

Once down, the primary door opens and the occupants exit. Contained aboard are enough supplies for the maximum number of occupants, plus a little extra.

Just a suggestion, but it might be prudent to impose image dimension limits to be merciful on those of us with dialup =p

For instance, nearly everything I render for use on NS is rendered at 450x300, and 500x500 at most.

And geez, look at what I've started! Way to go Kaenei!

After being propelled from the ship by the two engines, the craft uses its fuel sparingly to alter course towards the nearest, habitable, planet.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v160/Midlonia/dg2.png

After entry at approximately 10,000 feet, these foils are extended to slow the speed of the craft to a safe landing speed, landing is acheived by landing gear hidden inside the craft itself.

A large (10-15 people) escape pod for one of the ships in the Shadow Fleet (to be revelealed in a future RP.) Two engine flames visible, for getting out of any possible danger zone, and some spiky-fin-things because they look cool. Also, they help work as Slipstream Runners if the ship has to slipstream to safe space.
Not by best ship, but it's okay.

The point of the contest isn't really to produce the most computer-graphically brilliant model in the world. Its to stimulate ideas and abilities with a level playing field. DOGA is used by so many people here, and even if someone hasn't ever used it, with its ease-of-use, they can pick it up quickly.

Allowing the use of another program would invalidate all that.

But you should still have a go with DOGA. =)
