Explaining to a Noob
Eastern Redempt

Hey,
I'm a newbie here, in fact only started yesterday, and I was wondering if someone could explain how the hell this whole thing works. The FAQ doesn't really seem to answer many questions particularly with the forums. What does it all mean? Does anything that happens in the forums affect your country or is it all just role playing? How do I get involved in the forums? What do I need to know before I do?
Cheers

I'll try to answer any other questions you may have after reading through that.
Also, there's an NSWiki Encyclopedia available HERE (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)
The RolePlay aspect [NationStates and International Incidents forums] is loosely based on your actual nation statistics. However, those statistics do not get influenced by what happens in RP, and should be viewed as guidelines more than as hard facts. Of course, the above depends on who you ask......just remember to have fun.........

Your best bet, my friend, is to read the stickes at the top of each sub-forum, and maybe read a few RP's here...and, maybe, on International Inicedents too.

Another excellent idea would be to make note of various players on the forums whose work you like. Contact them by telegram with specific questions.
The first thing you should do is stop referring to yourself as a n00b. Newcomers and n00bs are two different creatures. A newcomer is a player who is new to the game. He or she might make a few mistakes during the learning process, but is usually teachable.
A n00b, by comparison, is a complete kneebiter who refuses to learn the (loosely organized and largely unwritten) rules of the game, refuses to acknowledge that it hasn't learned the rules, and refuses to accept any attempt by more experienced players to help.
Newcomers are usually welcomed, especially if they take the time to learn the rules and ask questions. This is rarely- if ever- true of n00bs.

Newcomer, unfortunately, is usually derogatively referred to as a newb.

Thanks I too will make some use of this advice, and yes, this is just so I can get my post numbers up because I'm that shallow ;)

Yes, but a newb is not a n00b.
The Six Levels of n00bdom:
Newbie: Newcomer. Learning.
Newb: Newcomer. Making mistakes, but has hope.
N00bie: Maybe newcomer. Making lots of mistakes.
Refuses to learn.
N00b: Not a newcomer, persay. Tons of mistakes. Pain in the ass.
Vintage n00b: A n00b that just won't leave and sticks around for about five months.
Regressed n00b: A player that has played well for many months but suddenly gets struck by a blunt object and becomes a n00b.
What happens in the forums doesn't affect your nation's stats-- only how you decide issues and whether or not you are a UN member will do that. The rest is all roleplaying. It is considered good form to accommodate and RP your nation's stats, but how you do that is completely up to you.
The best things to do, I'd say, is to ask yourself a few questions about what you want out of the game. Do you want to explore the intricacies of diplomatic relations? Do you want to work through the various problems you might have governing an emerging power in an established world? Do you want to have huge armies and fight epic battles? At what level of technology do you see your nation, and with what levels of technology are you willing to play? We've got everything here: from low fantasy to high fantasy to extreme sci-fi. And mixtures of all that and more. And, of course, good old-fashioned modern day mundanity.
Once you know more or less what you want to play, browse through the forums a bit and find compatible players, and then just jump in with both feet. Common sense rules the day. As long as you're civil and understand what the dread GODMODING is and how not to do it (and there is an excellent sticky on just that), you'll be fine.
Welcome to the game!

Welcome to the game! Just be careful about godmodding and, if you're not sure about something, it never hurts to ask. People seldom mind sincere questions.

One major thing you have to do, though, kid... is never listen to a thing this guy says ICly. His characters are the devil. The devil, I say! AND THEY MUST BE BURNT! SEND THEM TO THE INQUISITI...
Oh... I don't got one o' dem no more.
Anyway, don't trust Crimmond. He'll try to tell you that the sky is blue.

Er... no I'd best not point that out. Which reminds me, must get an inquisition - anyon know where I can find one on the cheap? I have a fairly established church...
