Deciding the Fate of Excalbian Isles - Elections in the C.S.S.

Amidst the turmoil of civil war in Upper Virginia, growing military and imperial power in Excalbia and the rise of a new Order in the Confederation, elections have come to the Confederation of Sovereign States. Now, you have the chance to influence the course of events in the Excalbian Isles.

I – the C.S.S.’s player – have predetermined 50% of the upcoming Presidential vote, but I am leaving the other 50% up to you, the NS community of players. Your vote will influence not only the C.S.S. – a large, wealthy but relatively unknown nation – but also the somewhat more active nations of Excalbia and Upper Virginia.

For those interested, background can be found here:

Now, meet the candidates:

Name: Ilmars Alderson
Position: President of the Confederation
Party: None
Background: President Alderson is running as a write-in candidate after unexpectedly losing the Liberty Party nomination at its convention. President Alderson is completing a respectable, if unspectacular term as president. During his administration, the Confederation’s economy has remained strong with a high degree of market freedom. He has also generally maintained libertarian social policies.

However, he has also greatly increased spending by the central government on education and introduced basic free health care for the needy. He has also maintained very strict policies on a variety of law and order issues. Under his administration, several State governments have begun to introduce greater worker’s benefits and more strict regulation of business. Some States have also introduced greater penalties for drug-related crimes and so-called crimes against public morals.

In foreign policy, President Alderson attempted to shed the Confederation’s historic seclusion and intervene to preserve stability in the neighboring Dominion of Upper Virginia. His initiatives, however, were stunningly rebuked by all parties, including the Confederation’s one traditional ally, the Holy Empire of Excalbia.

President Alderson is married and has two grown children. He is a career politician.

Name: Thomas Caine
Position: President of Caine Investments, Chief Operating Officer of ConfedPress and Member of the Board of Confederated Enterprises.
Party: Liberty Party
Background: A young, single and successful businessman, Caine has been a staple in gossip columns for years. However, he is new to politics and was nominated only after the Liberty Party convention surprisingly rejected President Alderson’s re-election bid. Caine is a self-confessed “rationalist” who calls for the Confederation to return to its libertarian roots. He wishes to repeal many of President Alderson’s social reforms – both on the economic side, such as eliminating the Confederation’s department of education, and on the social side, decriminalizing all so-called moral crimes, and reducing the size and power of the police.

Caine’s most shocking position is that the Confederation government has a responsibility to enforce the Constitution’s libertarian principles that overrides the Constitution’s guarantees of State sovereignty. Under this principle, he plans to attack the “creeping expansion of social welfare and morality policing” being carried out by the States.

In foreign affairs, he pledges to search for new trading partners, promising to join the Knootian International Stabilisation Treaty.

Caine dismisses allegations of ties to the Knootian Order of the Invisible Hand as “nonsense.”

Name: Harrison Tucker
Position: Member of the Confederation House of Representatives
Party: New Liberal Party
Background: Congressman Tucker has been an influential member of the House for many years and currently serves as Majority Whip. Tucker is campaigning on expanding social guarantees and doing more to regulate business in order to ensure the economic security of workers. Tucker also calls respecting the right of the States to exceed Confederation minimal social guarantees and to provide additional benefits for the people. In foreign affairs, Tucker has promised to maintain the Confederation’s traditional neutrality and free trade policies. However, he has pledged to temper free trade with attention to the need to avoid exporting jobs overseas and taking advantage of foreign workers. He reject’s Caine’s proposal to join the K.I.S.T.

Congressman Tucker is married with one teenage child.

Name: Evan Coombs
Position: Member of the Confederation House of Representatives
Party: Democratic Party
Background: A long-time social activist and journalist, Congressman Coombs has served two terms in the House or Representatives as one of a small handful of Democratic elected officials. Coombs advocates extensive economic and social reforms to address what he sees as social inequities in the Confederation. He favors the nationalization of the health care industry, strict environmental curbs on industry, a broad program of workers’ rights and transferring control of the schools away from the States to the Confederation. He supports fair trade as opposed to free trade and promises to impose reasonable trade barriers to protect jobs and industries from unfair competition. Coombs is unmarried.

Name: Dainis Zaicevs
Position: Member of the Confederation House of States
Party: Sovereignty Party
Background: One of two party members in the States’ House, Delegate Zaicevs is a political veteran and retired businessman. He advocates a minimalist government at the Confederation level, responsible only for national defense, foreign trade and foreign relations. However, he supports the right of each State to adopt their own rules and culture, even if they result in widely contradictory laws. He pledges to maintain strict neutrality in international affairs and would even break the Confederation’s long-standing defense pact with Excalbia.

Zaicevs is a widower with no children.

Notes:

1. Votes for President will also determine votes for the House of Representatives. Votes for Alderson will be split between Sovereignty and the New Liberals.
2. The election will remain open until Wednesday.

We, Chosen of Cormyr and King of the Zhaïdri State, would like to express our preference for the candidate that has proven his strength, reliability and common sense in combining a strong national defense with fair and compassionate social policies, all the while maintaining a realistic awareness of the need of law and order, against crime, drugs and immorality. All these are values we, the ruling body of Zhaïd, hold in high esteem and strive to accomplish in our fledgling nation in turmoil.

Cormyr's blessing be upon Ilmars Alderson.

The polls are closed and the results are in. Once again, thanks to everyone who voted and especially to those who posted.

As stated, the poll provided 50% of the votes and I predetermined the other 50%. So, putting the two together, here are the final results...

Presidential Election

Incumbent Ilmars Alderson - write-in -- 18.5%
Thomas Caine - Liberty Party -- 38.5%
Harrison Tucker - New Liberal Party -- 12%
Evan Coombs - Democratic Party -- 20%
Dainis Zaicevs - Sovereignty Party -- 11%

The surprise here is the strong showing by the Democratic Party - formerly a small, fringe party in the Confederation.

Seats in the House of Representatives

Liberty Party -- 173
New Liberal Party -- 95
Democratic Party -- 91
Sovereignty Party -- 91

The New Liberals have lost their majority in the House. Rumours are that the Democrats and New Liberals are discussing a coalition that would give them a 186 seat plurality in the House. Again, the surprise is that the Democrats have gone from a small number of seats to holding a large block.

Seats in the House of States

Liberty Party -- 4
New Liberal Party -- 2
Democratic Party -- 3
Sovereignty Party -- 3

The Senate, formerly held strongly by the Liberty Party, is now completely fractured.
