The official language is papazan, although we overwhelmingly speak English. As a confederacy we understand that foreign languages do exist and that they have a right to be spoken; therefore we shall use a language not personal to any particular people and allow each person to retain the language they choose to speak.

German.

Azzion
19-09-2004, 23:15
There are three major languages in Azzion: Azzionese English, French (Quebecois dialect), and High German.

Since many of Azzion's citizens are of American, Canadian or British birth, the official language is Azzionese English. AE is made up of phrases and words borrowed from the Queen's English, though spellings and accents are American.

Also because of the Canadians, Quebecois French is a powerful language. A sizable French-Canadian majority resides in Azzion, and thus, Quebecois French is understood by an estimated 80% of the population.

High German is spoken by a German immigrant minority on the fringes of the capital, Landavulven. German is widely studied in Azzion's high schools, and is considered a scholarly language, on the same level as Latin.

The Latin Union
19-09-2004, 23:36
The Latin Union's populace speaks a wide range of Latin-based languages; the most dominant are Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese, with to a lesser extent French, and a minority of Italian-speakers. Though the Union itself has no official language, Latin is required to be taught in schools from grades 6-12 as a second language for all inhabitants, to better facilitate communication within the nation. In addition, one other Latin-based language is required for all secondary school students. In this way, a Spanish-speaking citizen will know both Latin and one other Romance language by the time they are ready to enter the adult world. Latin is also the standard language for government documents, and is printed on all signs and billboards as a secondary language for all citizens to understand. English is offered in universities and colleges as an optional but recommended language for students entering business or engineering. As a result, most educated Latins are quadrilingual by the time they enter the business world.

Roycelandia
20-09-2004, 07:48
Roycelandia, having Colonies in several places, has a variety of languages spoken throughout the Empire.

English is the Official Language, used for all Administration, Business, and pretty much everything else- everyone speaks at least some English throughout the Empire, with the exception of a few of the tribes in Roycelandian New Guinea.

In Roycelandian East Africa, the Official Language is English. French and Portuguese are also spoken by a reasonable number of people, and Xhosa, Bantu, and Zulu are also spoken to a lesser extent. Arabic is widely spoken in Roycelandian Sudan, for obvious reasons. Official Roycelandian policy is not to discourage Tribal and Minority Languages, but English is the only language taught in schools (High School students can learn a second language if they wish).

In Roycelandian New Guinea, English is again the Official Language, with many and varied numbers of Tribal Dialects being spoken as well.

Coral Palm Island and Glimmer Twins speak only English, fortunately.

North Terristan speaks English, with Arabic spoken equally as widely.

Most Feminanians speak a basturdisation [sic] of Arabic and various European languages (a bit like Maltese).
Carlemnaria
20-09-2004, 10:13
there is no 'official' language. the defacto language is a
blend of all preexisting indiginous languages.

there is an international auxiliary language is taught in schools and used for legal documants. (this is not english, french or esparanto, but like esparanto is an artificialy
constructed language, differing from esparanto in that it
encorporates nonlaten roots, especialy asian such as nepalese,
tibetan, han, and nehongo, as well as several uniquely western
hemisphere indiginous roots such as pomo, miwauk and
nissinan maidu, and those of pacific islands such as native
hawaiian and maori

place names and signage are of course in the
defacto language which naturaly bears the name of the nation
(which in each place the earliest names of used by its
earliest inhabitants are favored and revered)

in otherwords: carlemnarian (what else? why one earth, if we even are on earth, which is academic trivia anyway, why
would we speak a dead petrolium era language when that whole
way of life ceased to exist more then a century ago in our
history)

(earlier pre-european influence traditions and cultures on
the other hand have proven quite practical and useful and
living in harmony with the land, even with a very selective
use of advanced tecnology, has proven quite spritualy
gratifying as well. certainly more so then anything between 1620 and 2020. though speaking of calenders we use
a slightly modified version of one that began in 1844 of
the mundanely currently dominant one in 2004 u.s.)

Mods, I accidently made a new thread... Damn
Oshima and Izu
20-09-2004, 15:32
The official language of O&I is Izugo. Technically it is not a distinct language so much as a derivative of Japanese that has its origins in various obscure dialects found in the Izu Archipelago. (In OOC terms, I came up with the name but the dialects are -at least in theory- real.)

A well known example of Izugo is provided by our motto: Shoumon bakkari shite'ru to, boukon ga kuru zo (If you play in the sea, the monster will come for you)
Deutsch - Rheinland
20-09-2004, 15:42
The only official language of Deutsch-Rheinland is German (as you might guess by the name ;) ).
Our schoolchildren start learning English in 5th grade and it is mandatory to take English classes until school ends. In 7th grade, the options of French and Spanish are added. You can take either language and then it is again mandatory to also take that language until school ends.
So as every Deutsch-Rhinelandisch student finishes high school, he can speak three languages: German as his native language, English, and either French or Spanish.
In 10th grade you can decide whether you want to specialise in science classes, social studies classes or languages. Latter offers you courses in Italian, Russian, Polish, Swedish or Turkish, whichever one you choose.
Those languages learned in school are no official languages, however they are recognized by the government and large parts of the population will understand them.
Mattikistan
20-09-2004, 15:48
The official language of Mattikistan is English. How it developed here to sound exactly the same as England itself, even though we were isolated until the 1800s, is beyond even our most prominent historians and sociologists. A minority language, Relorian, is spoken by a handful of people in the South-East of Mattikistan, but it is rarely a primary language of anybody but the Relorians themselves, however the Constitutional Monarch of Reloria is an independent nation and not counted in the Confederacy census.

We speak Scots-Gaelic (shortened to Gaelic, abbrev Gael) within our borders, as it is the national language.

English is the language of commerce and diplomatic negotiation, therefore many of our schools begin teaching it fairly early.

Everyone in our nation can speak Scots-Gaelic, with about twenty percent of the population bilingual toward the use of English at this time.

And yes, I am semi-fluent in Sindarin, and not so fluent in German.

Rejistanian is spoken in the Rejis. this language has no real basis on RL languages, I used an insane mixture of german, french, esperanto, vietnamese and swahili for the grammar and made up the words.
Smagganuk
20-09-2004, 20:59
In Smagganuk, smagga is the dominating language. Smagga is based upon the language of a tribe of seal hunters, the chengar, that settled along the shores of Smagganuk after the latest Ice Age and still live there. Smagga is also influenced by Chinese from early colonisations, and a multitude of polynesian tribal languages. Smagga also has borrowed words from Dutch, English, Portugese and Spanish. Ancient cities, rivers and mountains tend to have names in either Chinese, Ancient Chengar or the language of the K'hang.

For more information, please read the history of Smagganuk at:

Ruskkia
23-09-2004, 11:37
English is what us Ruskkies speak every single day, so you could say its our main language.

We also have High Ruskkian, only spoken during meetings of the High Lords of Ruskkia. The Regent is required to speak it fluently and so are the Lords themselves.

Then theres Low Ruskkian, a very old language dating back to even before Lord Serlin's Great Crusade/The Unification of Ruskkia and the founding of the Empire. Low Ruskkian is usually only spoken by those persons in rural or very remote places of Ruskkia.

There are seaveral books which exist which are writtern in either High or Low Ruskkian. A bookshop crawl of Serlingrad of, lets say, the best part of a year by someone with a very sharp eye will uncover one or pages.
