A small island in the Pacific
01:00 AM
The small fishing community was asleep. The only person who was not sleeping was Artur Dukakis, an old man who was coming ashore in his fishing boat. He raised his eyebrows in surprise as he saw a Zodiac boat enter the harbour. Then another one. Then another.
He raised his hand in greeting at the passenger of the boat.
‘Mornin’, fellas!’
A long burst from an AKS cut him short.
Minutes later, the massacre began.
Hundreds and thousands of rebels descended upon the island.
Mi-8 helicopters circled overhead, dropping bombs.
Some awoke to the sound of machineguns bursts – and fell asleep again, for eternity.
Others opened their eyes, only to see a 500-kilogram high explosive bomb drop through the feeble ceilings of their farmhouses and onto their bed.
Yet others woke from the sharp pain of a knife at their throats, drowning in their own blood.
In three hours, the rebels controlled the island.
