The elections for the new session of the Goobergunchian High Council will be held shortly. Martin Goobergunch has decided to retire from Goobergunchian politics, and so these elections are particularly important An international comm feed for other nations to comment on the elections and ask party leaders questions.

The High Council is elected in odd-numbered years by a nation-wide party list vote. There are 100 seats in the High Council, selected proportionally in accordance with the outcome of the election. The High Council is primarily concerned with setting the budget for Goobergunchia and with foreign policy issues. The High Council also elects the President.

Five parties have qualified for the ballot.

The Liberty Party (47 seats currently) favors a pacifistic foreign policy as well as high levels of domestic spending. However, they have backed strict sanctions against Allanea and support the Sentient Peoples occupation.

The Unity Party (23 seats currently) favors a more militaristic foreign policy as well as lower levels of domestic spending. They support a major tax cut, primarily for the wealthy. They support more aggressive action against Allanea and would not mind invading them.

The Independence Party (11 seats currently) favors military disarmament as well as low levels of domestic spending. They support disengagement in the Allanean situation but do not support lifting the immigration ban.

The Blue Party (11 seats currently) favors an isolationist foreign policy as well as high levels of domestic spending. They support attempting to make up with Allanea for previous differences and dropping all bans, and are also in favor of Allanean independence.

The Toga Party (5 seats currently) favors abolition of all tariffs and high levels of international expenses. Although they are not in favor of completely making up with Allanea, they would drop the current regulations against Allanean and also nominally support Allanean independence.

Feel free to ask the party leaders questions.

[ooc: At least half of the final election returns will be based on the poll. So your votes do matter, but I reserve the right to make my foreign policy work the way I want it to. And please don't vote if you think you'll change your mind later. ;)]

The responses of the party leaders to your question is as follows:

We support the current Goobergunchian gun control laws. There is no need for the average citizen to be walking around with live firearms - however, they can get one if they undergo our one-week screening process. As for taxes, we support the current Goobergunchian tax structure.

Peter Kasilon
Liberty Party Leader [Presidential Candidate]

The current Goobergunchian gun control laws are too strict. Goobergunchians should be able to buy guns whenever they want to, as long as they haven't been convicted of a crime - a 24-hour waiting period will suffice. Goobergunchian taxes are too onerous as well - they should be severely cut.

Golan Belik
Unity Party Leader [Presidential Candidate]

Goobergunchia spends too much money on gun control enforcement. While we support the current laws, the gun control enforcement budget needs to be cut. Ditto for taxes - we wouldn't mind replacing the current tax system with a flat tax or consumption tax.

Jesse Kantal
Independence Party Leader [Presidential Candidate]

The current gun control laws in Goobergunchia do not go far enough. Guns should be completely outlawed for everyone. The current tax structure is fine, though.

Mary Rybelis
Blue Party Leader [Presidential Candidate]

Every citizen of Goobergunchia should have a gun - it will only make Goobergunchia safer. Furthermore, our taxes are out of control - massive tax cuts are needed to make our people less oppressed.

Larry Yobtarf
Toga Party Leader [Presidential Candidate]

"Of course, I know my government is completely neutral in these elections. However I think I speak on behalf of most of the international community when I say: U-NI-TY U-NI-TY"
~A former Knootian minister of Foreign Affairs, speaking on KNN World edition

((OOC: Of course, we like Liberty Party also, since its the party we know. And the handies will like the Toga party.))

What are the current policies of each party concerning the following issues:

1. Abortion
2. Affirmative Action
3. Education
4. Welfare
5. Minimum wage
6. Recreational drugs and/or medical marijuana
7. Immigration
8. Death Penalty

The New Genoese Liberal Party (the current party in power) is inclined to show their support for the Liberty Party candidates.
