Read all the posted stickies in this forum. Read the ones in International Incidents as well. That will give you a good idea of what goes on around here.

Welcome.

Read others' posts before you make one to get the gist of things -- especially posts in the NationStates forum. International Incidents probably isn't the best forum to learn the ropes of the game.

First step - have fun. Continue this one as often as possible throughout.

Seriously. Take the time to read or at least glance through a few threads that catch your interest. There are so many different aspects to the game, it's crazy.

Not everyone rp's - some just do the issues and watch their nation grow. Some get involved in regional politics and play. Some with alliances. Some to all of it. And yeah, it just goes on.

Don't let other people dictate to you how you play, but realize what choices you make do have an effect on who you end up playing with, and the image you create for yourself on the boards. Whether this is a good or bad one largely depends on your comfort/fun level, and those accepted by folks you want to play with. Despite what some may hint at, there's more than enough room for all of us in this game, with all our varied interests, tech levels, styles of play, skill with writing, knowledge of various fields, etc.

If you need help - ask for it. Just be prepared to get all sorts of answers. Take what works for you, and go from there.

My suggestion is to avoid wars for the first little while, if that sort of play interests you, til you get your feet under you, and get a better 'feel' for the underlying currents of politics and such in whatever area you end up playing in. I know we've all seen the 'squish the uppity newb' crusades that go on - and there you have it. It gets stupid.

If there are open threads where several players are 'socializing', these can be good places to get yourself introduced and noticed. Always good to read up and know what you're getting into of course.

If you'd like to chat with other players, there's all those fun chat proggies out there (you may notice many players have their contact info listed on their posts for such) or check the sticky in this forum with info for IRC - where there are many, many different channels for different interests, and plenty of helpful (and granted, not so helpful sometimes) people you can tap for ideas.

Again ... have fun. That is kind of the point of it all, neh?
