DUMA: Xeno-Science Invitational (OPEN CO-RP)

Wazzu

[[OOC: This is only the lead-in to an open RP, so I’m going to skip all the “have done” arrival stuff and get straight to the conference/invitational.]]

“Martians, Solerites, and scientists from everywhere, welcome to the Martian Duma.

“For those of you who can’t keep up on every event of over a hundred thousand nations, I am Commodore Tully, formerly in service of Wazzu. The nation of Mangala has been kind enough to provide me with temporary political asylum so that I can offer you a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Tully clicked a button and a slide showed up showing an extra-solar planet.

“While fleeing Sol, the crew of Megan,” the lack of the word ‘the’ was intentional, Megan was a she, a child placed in a ship’s body, “discovered something unique in a nearby star system.

“As far as our technical but non-scientific staff can tell, the former residents of this star system once had an empire. Now their society is gone, wasted away in decadence in the last 50 to 200 years. Their mark remains.

“As if an isolated pre-FTL human empire around another star were not enough for anthropologists and archeologists enough, data mined out of some surviving equipment suggests something even more spectacular. The people of this empire were involved in furious genetic research.”

Another slide passed, this one showing lush green through a break in planet-wide clouds.

“The star system is far older then Sol, and the rescued files say that the life on the planet was well established before life on Earth was. They also show that this empire deliberately introduced competing species both Terran and alien in origin.

“Exactly how a pre-FTL civilization acquired alien specimens we don’t know. What we do know is that the planet is a gold-mine of competing flora and fauna.

“Unfortunately, my people are not scientists, they are techs and soldiers. We can’t work out information that could help us deal with alien invasive species, or xeno-inter-psychology. We only know that there are discoveries to be made. That is why we are inviting you.”

A slide changed to that of a ship, the stolen (kidnapped?) Megan.

“Now, we can’t deal with everyone rushing this system, least of all my home nation. But what we can do is offer you transportation there. It isn’t a journey to be taken lightly, and the risks are potentially high, but the payoff, specifically the academic payoff, is bound to be great.”

“So if any of you are interested, you have 3 days to pack your bags, buy any supplies you may need, and get a ticket on a Mangalan transport to Megan. The next flight won’t leave for two years...allowing the first to get first data.”

There, thought Tully, that should guarantee that only the most dedicated and best connected scientists will make it. And from the looks on their faces, Tully saw that most of the audience realized the same thing.

******OOC******

THE IDEA: We all get trapped in our nations, our technology, the rules we set for ourselves. I created this RP so that we can explore other areas of RP. The whole idea is to be different, be creative, and be weird.

THE NO’S:

1: This is NOT a war thread. Don’t bring spacecraft in to battle for dominance, that will only kill the RP.

2: This is NOT a territory claims thread. I am keeping the system’s name secret for now, and will place a puppet-placeholder in a new region to keep anyone from killing the RP this way either.

3: This is NOT a technology discovery thread. I refuse to allow a good RP to increase godmoding.

THE GO’S:

1: Feel free to make up any flora or fauna you like. It can be wild, domesticated, pretty, dangerous, even intelligent. Be creative, best to make it weird, alien, different.

2: Feel free to make up any characters you want. Are they human/alien/EI/mutated/other survivors? Are they visitors from elsewhere? Something else? Please make them unique...there shouldn’t be any sentients left on the planet with enough population to be sustainable.

3: Feel free to make up anything about the empire (empires?) that once roamed the system, so long as it doesn’t kill the RP (see “THE NO’S” above).

4: Feel free to find pictures online, make your own threads, RP on different forums/BBs, and take this RP wherever you like it.

Remember THE IDEA: We all get trapped in our nations, our technology, the rules we set for ourselves. I created this RP so that we can explore other areas of RP. The whole idea is to be different, be creative, and be weird.

I’ll RP the arrival of the child-ship Megan either Friday or Saturday and set you loose. And I do mean set you loose, to whatever your characters want to do (explore the planet? Refurbish a fission or fusion powered 2-person space racer? Catalogue biological or archeological findings? Track down a murderer who escaped authorities by joining the mission? Run from said (secret) authorities?).

If your interested, please post a bio (short or long as you like) of your characters below so people know your joining in and with who.

OOC: You know I'm up for some weirdness. While I can technically provide my own transport I'll take the ride anyway.

IC:

Through a strange combination of computer weirdness and wild-ass chance one of the oddest teams ever is assembled to visit this unknown planet on behalf of several of the major Sunset Universities. The question is - who will be weirder - the planet or the team?

First up is Doctor Lkij'Sadf Ihadf, a Trilat (http://www.pacifier.com/~cziller/trilat.jpg) professor of geology at New Vancouver university. While the three arms and four legs possessed by the professor make climbing and caving a simple matter it is actually much more at home in the jungle. The doctor, like all trilats, is an androgynous clone and will be accompanied by three non-sentient drones to assist it in it's work.

Next up is the combat android designated 'Fuzzy' by the sentient computer that inhabits the battle ready bipedal chassis. 'Boots' as it designates itself has a thing for both cats and neko of all kinds and the android frame has been heavily altered to reflect this. Boots is also an undergraduate in zoology at Western Sunset University. His assignment is to retrieve samples for study.

Doctor Thignar IV is a Therian Professor of Communication currently on sabatical. He hopes to observe the interaction between the native and alien species as well as the communication methods used by the various teams and people visiting this new world.

The recently organized Imperial Academy of Science and Technology will be sending a co-operative expedition to the Dominion Protectorate cataloged system. For this expedition we will contribute two of our Magellan-class science vessels and a pair of Redevac-class courier ships. The personnel dossiers of mission commanders and specialists are included:

Captain Priscillia Hutchins: A veteran captain with the Imperial Astrological Investigative Agency (IAIA), on loan to the Academy. She has extensive experience in astrological mapping and survey techniques, as well as a major from the Imperial University (New Koln) in planetology. Her resume includes four years of experience with the Twin Star Lines Corporation, two years with His Majesty's Kriegsmarine courier bureau, and thirty-seven years with the IAIA. Captain Hutchins has been designated as mission commander for the expeditionary effort, and will command from the IARS Clarke.

Doctor Viktor Namowitz: Officially registered with the University of Rasalhague, Doctor Namowitz has been in a large part responsible for the organization of the Academy's archeological research infrastructure and looks forward to putting his department through its first major field test. He holds degrees in Terran, Protoss, and general Xeno-archeology from the University of Rasalhague and Primus University, respectively.

Professor Dame Katherine Novaya: Noted for her work on the Jurian language research project in former Ortagan Ducal territory, Dame Katherine is recognized as one of the leading experts in xeno-anthropology. She also has considerable experience in the field of linguistics and hopes to use the recently designed Raton program to approach the recently discovered culture from its most personal concept: their language and literature.

Lieutenant Commander Togashi Hayumi: A veteran of the Outer Defense Militia, and a contracted employee of the IAIA, Lieutenant Commander Togashi commands the second of the Magellan-class research vessels: the Chindi.

Lieutenant Rembaugh: Commander of the Academy's courier assets for this mission, formerly an employ of the Solar Industrial Cartel.

"Errr...perhaps I didn't make myself clear." (formor) Commodore Tully said as some of the Valinon people came forward. "We are offering a ride, not a location.

"You see, there aren't too many of us," he was refering to his group of 'traitors', "and most of us can't manage to even get out of this system. We can't protect the system from looters, claimers, and similar criminals. The system's location remains secret, we provide the only transportation.

"But your welcome to use any one of a number of in-system shuttles aboard Megan, or refurbish an artifact if you like."

That the renegades were effectively trying to hide from their parent nation went unsaid. Paranoia was an art in Wazzu.

OOC: And in other news...BUMP!

I’ll be getting the thread started (late) tomorrow. This thread will remain open for signups and for any RP anyone wants to do (not necessary). I guess I should throw in a few characters myself.

(Former) Commodore Tully, the one who is inviting everyone at the conference, will be “in charge.” Though all he is really doing is watching over the ship and its crew as a captain (the ship was stolen from dock, it had neither captain nor crew). Other then that, he won’t interfere except to chase away anyone else who finds the system…which will be no one, right? :)

Megan is the 8 (soon 9) year old child brain of the ship, in the place of the traditional ship’s AI. She is more likely to interact with characters…being the ship itself, but obviously can’t get directly involved.

Jason Young, a young graduate student from a major Wazzu university is really David Briggs, a shoe-in for a rival (and still loyal to Wazzu) Admiral who wants Admiral West’s blood (West is still at Sol, and will be staying there, but no one knows that). Jason/David is young, and does have a passing interest in research biology, but is WAY out of his league. The young “coreman” has no training in undercover ops and will cover his lack of knowledge through blundering (some of it quite honest and unknowingly).

Diane Tessler and Steve Wynn are the real thing…the real spy thing that is. Unfortunately, they didn’t make it to Mars on time and won’t be around. Oh shucks! :)

Lutria Westone is another type of real thing, of one sort or another. She is an elf, the very short northern variant that is. With no science of their own, it is unknown why this protectorate of Wazzu is sending one of their own on a scientific journey, or why she chose to come. She just says it is “to see the trees,” which might not be very far off.

Dr. Halfred Hornsby is an aging Mars bioforming specialist. He says he just wants to see another world before he dies. What he won’t admit to himself is that seeing a new planet with competing lifeforms of many origins excites him.

Ray Pung is Dr. Hornsby’s brilliant but misguided and completely streetsmartless helper. Some would say “lacky,” Ray prefers “apprentice.” Dr. Honsby is a living god to Ray, and Ray’s enthusiasm and brownnosing can often get on the old man’s shrinking nerves.

I may introduce more characters later, but they are likely to stay minor.

Likewise, anyone can introduce new characters as they like (there is a lot of room on the ship), or sign up here even after the mission gets started. We’ll just assume they ere on the ship.

BTW: This is a shameless BUMP. :)

EEk i hope its not too late to join up?

Commander Jessica Epps-Team leader, Liaison with the Navy, Doctorate in anthropology.

Markus Bevil-An archeologist with Thetis University.

Several unimportant underlings for paperwork and such. This is mostly a two person team. All WIckians know very little of their past just that for a thousand years they were enslaved by the Overlords. Most of my nation’s scientific efforts is trying to find out about our past and the overlords who seemingly disappeared after the uprising.

Maybe that how the aliens have artifacts with out FTL they were peons in mines and such for the overlords.

Just an idea if not I always love finding new stuff and a thread without a major war is a welcome relief!

OOC: Of course it's not too late! Post when you like as per the link above...or anywhere else you like (just let us know where). I plan a post or two myself this weekend...when I have a bit more free time from school.

I think I'll be:
1) ancient but strange warrior people/race
2) scientists dedicated to exploring jungles in search for valuable flora and fauna
3) some sort of outer space guy
4) some other guys
5) just in case, I'll have another person on layaway.

I'll think up more details later.

Lookin' Pretty Sweet, Wazzu m'friend. I'll see if I can't come up with something to contribute. Which, of course, I can. Hrrumph, now, the question comes about: Why am I even making this post...

The answer: Damned if I know...

Veeeeeell anyvays, vat shall ve do...ahh, zeee qvestion itzelf. Ve vill just have to vait und zee, ja?

Anyways, enough of that. I'll be erm, I would say 'contributing,' but that implies that this was a good thing, anyways, I'll be ditching upon this poor system, everybody's favorite archaelogist. (Which, incidentally, isn't true, as I've never played the poor sucker before, merely written the -character-.)

Name: Straker, Jackson Stewart
Age (by appearance): late-middle age (early fifties, as an appearance guideline)
Eyes: Gray
Hair: Steel Gray
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 187 s.pounds

Further Notes: Sergeant Major (ret.) Professor Dr. Jackson Stewart Straker, PhD. Professor Straker is possibly the most reknowned xenoarchaelogist within the ORA. Before acquiring first (of many) Doctorate, Jackson Straker served a number of terms with the Revenian Fleet Marines, eventually rising to the rank of Sergeant Major, having been transferred to the elite Marauder/Recon Division.
---
Doctor Straker will travelling with a pair of grad students, and Corporal (ret.) Asst. Professor Xelos Carvelis.

Xelos Carvelis is a Veliki, and typical of that race's males.

Psst.. Can there be Yautja?

*laughs maniacally*

Anyway, searching through archeology digs to discover ancient temples to learn about pre-existing civilization is the epitome of good damned RP.

OOC: As those who've been paying CLOSE attention will know, I've had this... uh, thing in Santa Barbara. An ancient, quasi-fungal, supersentient, psionic, hive-minded organism! YEAH!

So naturally ever since I introduced that I've been wondering... what the hell was I thinking? I've been trying to tie it into later RPs as I didn't have any overall plan when I first created it.

But now I think I can finally use it in an RP. That'll be my main character. Of course, physically all its really done is just sit there underground in the middle of SB. So I'll use other, actual human characters who've merely been psionically molested by it.
