East Islandian elections

East Islandia
01-09-2004, 16:50
With three months to go on the campaign trail (Islandian politicians dont leave office to campaign until three months before-sort of a tradition and courtesy demanded by the people), Premier Chai Jun and running mate Kei Wu (brought in to replace ultra-nationalist Park Hyemin, who was Vice Premier before) have slipped at the polls. Recent nationalist feeling against Dra-pol, Marimaia, and Bonstock have escalated, and the poor handling by Chai and her regime have done little to encourage voters, especially swing ones.

Stats:
Premier Chai Jun (Sai Wu Party)
birthplace: Pearl Archipelago, East Islandia
age: 41

History:
Served in the East Islandian Air Force as a rescue officer aboard an Aizu-11 (medevac chopper) in the Islandian Wars, fought against the breakaway province of West Islandia. Served two tours (one year) and was shot down late in the war, behind enemy lines. In the resulting action, she fought off enemies, and saved the lives of several wounded passengers, while sustaining multiple injuries (mostly knife lacerations and internal bleeding resulting from blows when her attackers closed for hand-to-hand combat). Chai later received a citation for her actions; nonetheless, it was revoked when she attacked the government verbally, as part of a peace group. She even joined the Censorate (a committee against corruption), and later played a pivotal role in bringing the government's reckless abuse of the media and perjury to justice.

Political Views:
A moderate, for the most part, Chai prefers to negotiate. Nonetheless, like most Islandians, she is hot tempered, and sometimes may have her judgement clouded. Although not a Nationalist, Chai has deployed troops to her ancestral homeland (China) as part of an alliance, not as any part of a unilateral action, and has also made attempts to intervene in various conflicts in Asia.

In terms of foreign policy, Chai is not rigid; she prefers to bend with the situation, and talk rather than fight; her own experience with war taught her that it is something to be studiously avoided.

In the world political spectrum, Chai is a liberal/progressive. She is in favor of education, universal healthcare, pro-choice, and generally supports most forms of progressive legislation. Under her, East Islandia had become one of the more progressive, if secluded, island-nations in NationStates, and under her, the nation has prospered. Nonetheless, recent challenges have come in forms of the Korean War (launched by Drapol) failures in the Politburo and government, and dissent with her Vice Premier, Park Hye-min, a strong Korean Nationalist.

It remains to be seen whether she will be re-elected.

*******
Hsu Yu-lien (Xin Guo Party)

Part Islandian, part Taiwanese, and with a little Japanese blood in there somewhere, Ms. Hsu represents the diverse face of East Islandia, a nation fully accepting of immigration. As such, Ms. Hsu is a strong advocate of immigrant rights, whereas Chai Jun had been somewhat iffy about giving asylum to people other than genocide survivors, refugees, and unskilled laborers. Aside from this, however, Ms. Hsu is a conservative; whereas Chai is in favor of universal healthcare, Hsu does not like the idea, and is for less business legislation. Likewise, Hsu is more in favor of a militant stance, and is against Dra-pol, Bonstock, and Marimaia (for negotiating with Dra-pol), among others. Hsu is also an advocate of extending East Islandian trade and diplomatic relations, and is in favor of increasing military spending by nearly 14 billion li. Hsu has also spoken upon the merits of standardized testing, curriculums, and has voted in support of a bill (not unlike the American No-Child-Left-Behind Act) to bring about more standardized testing in East Islandia.

Hsu was born in Rugola, the home region of the East Islandian defense industry. Her father was a foreman at a nearby spidersilk manufacturing plant (belonging to Biotechnica Islandia), and her mother had served in the Naval Air Service as the pilot of a Su-27. Hsu had two siblings, both sisters; one of them died in the Islandian Wars, serving as a helicopter pilot, and the other one became a university professor of advanced neurological studies.
Hsu, however, went into Tokyo U (she qualified, and later graduated at the top of her class) and joined Shimeia Industries (a company specializing in medicine), of which she is now the CEO.

her running mate is Ng Chun, a more moderate candidate who is somewhat progressive.
*********
Kim Eun-jin (Shueizo Party)
Age: 38
Birthplace: Xiang Pu Region, central East Islandia

A former Censorate official, Kim Eun-jin is known for her strong leanings against corruption. A friend of Chai's (the two were in the Censorate together) Kim Eun-jin had been a candidate for Chai's running mate, until Chai picked Park Hye-min, as she was forced to stay within her political party as for a choice of running mate.

Growing up in Vei-go, the largest city in Xiang Pu (roughly the size of Kyoto, Japan) Kim Eun-jin's independent spirit was created through tragedy. Her father was a police officer for the local department, and he was killed in te line of duty when she was twelve. At the age of fifteen, her mother died, due to complications from cancer, and she was left with a half-sister. After working several jobs at once, Kim joined the military, one of the best ways for poor youngsters to rise above their childhood, and served in an Air Descent Regiment (roughly equivalent to American Army Rangers), becoming a Colonel due to the rough attrition rate of the Islandian Wars.

Later, she joined the Censorate, disillusioned by the war, although she had won several citations for bravery. At this time, her sister also joined an Air Descent unit, and was listed as missing in action pending a helicopter crash and a fierce firefight. Heartbroken, Kim left the Censorate, drifting for a year before she finally returned to work, and set her mind to reform. Although her sister, Kim Eun-kyung, has not been found to this day, Kim has moved on with her life.

A moderate, Kim is not nearly as progressive as Chai, but also not as conservative as Hsu. Her real commitment lies in her dedication to poor and underprivileged (mostly immigrant) children, who live in slums and in remote, backwards areas. She is also in favor of Universal Healthcare, but has clashed with Chai on several issues, including welfare, education, and military reform. Kim is a balanced candidate, but the fact that she is running for the Shueizo Party (an independent) means that she does not have such good chances. Nonetheless, Shueizo is the strongest independent party, and has submitted many councilors to Sumenya Hall (a part of the Politburo)

OOC: Marimaia votes for Chai (what a surprise), since she's the only one who seems to like us :)

If Hsu wins, I think Suun will probably cry over democracy screwing up his plans :(

Marimaia

OOC: Hmm, no right wing parties? In that case, _Taiwan votes for Hsu.
Bonstock

A "special interest group," EICFP (East Islandian Citizans For Peace), offers millions of dollars from an unknown sponser to whomever would take a nicer stance against Bonstock.

ooc: I'm not sure who to vote for... Chai Jun's been one big pain in the ass to me for 9 consecutive months... Hsu seems to be some ultra-radical who would pump up Sino... Kim, I don't know her foreign affairs views... can you post pics of these women? I think I might have to vote for which ever one's sexiest...

ooc2: Why does it seem like every charachter of yours is an azn woman?

OOC: Sino's governement's all khaki, almost all male and at least 30. It's fine to have women in power but keep in mind that not everyone's a Queen Elizabeth I or Queen Victoria. A louzy example of women in power would be the current New Zealand PM, that damn lesbian!

In a stunning last minute appearance, Kim Eun-kyung, Kim Eun-jin's sister, showed up at Kim Eun-jin's rally last night, two nights before elections.

The scene was truly heartbreaking as both women embraced each other, having not seen each other in decades.

Kim Eun-jin was elected Premier of East Islandia today, with an overwhelming majority, beating out Hsu Yu-lien and Ng Chun.

OOC: I still don't get it, where are the male politicians in EI?

ooc: My best guess: either serving rice at home or moldering in war cemetaries, curtosy of the Bonstocknian soldier.

But wait, Chai Jun got more vote. Why isn't she premier? Not that I want her, I voted for Kim as the lesser of two evils.

ic: Lord Harald extends his congratulations to Kim Eun-jin, and asks to meet with her for a summit on Islandian-Bonstocknian relations.

ooc: EI, can I have a picture of the new leader?

It is our earnest hope that the new Premier of East Islandia will see fit to begin a general thaw in relations. A detente should be reached, and we are most hopeful that Madame Kim will see fit to expand and increase relations between our two great nations.
