Hudecian Elections
President Matsuda's deteriorating health led him to announce that he would not be running for re-election. He leaves behind a mixed record for the Liberal Democratic Party, so perhaps a new leader will have more luck.
Anthony Fieldings
Party: Liberal Democratic Party
Platform: Fieldings hopes to rebuild relations with several allies by taking a less aggresive stance on many issues. He served as Minister of Finance in the Matsuda cabinet. He also wants to focus on radically reorganizing the outdated Hudecian health and education systems.
Support: Fieldings' support is primarily the lower class and new immigrants, although this has been typical of the party for the last several elections and is not the result of his new policies.
Michael MacNally
Party: Conservative Party
Platform: MacNally is looking at strengthening the policies he set in place as House Leader. He wishes to strengthen the military and use it in a more forceful way during diplomacy. Although he is a strong moralist, he will not hesitate to do what he feels is necessary to protect Hudecia. A secondary policy is his desire to reform the Hudecian political system to make it less intrusive in the daily lives of Hudecians.
Support base: Primarily seen as a better economist than Fieldings, he is embraced by the business elite and even many union leaders.
Jiang Wang
Party: Hudecian Family Party
Platform: Wang is a former Baptist minister who left the service in pursuit of politics. Although the party did well under the last muslim leader, party constitution dictated that the party leadership must change before each election. He wishes to strengthen the rights of religious organizations by decreasing the size and breadth of the Hudecian government. Secondarily, he wishes the government to help bring religious freedoms to all nations.
Support: Muslims, Jews and devout Christians and Catholics united together to form the party and still make up the base. However, inroads into the Sikh and Hindu communities are being made.
Hudecian Candidates positions on:
Drapol/Korean Crisis
Fieldings:
"We should continue our policy of isolating Drapol and matching their buildup on the peninsula. However, we must not forget that there are other crises in the region that must be dealt with. Korea must be made to stand on its own without foreign aid, and the cleanup and rebuilding process must be accelerated."
MacNally:
"Although I have long advocated using our military to protect the south from Drapol, we must go further than that. We need our allies to become involved, and we need more nations to stand with us, especially China."
Wang:
"Many many Hudecians have lost loved ones in Korea, however, this is not a war that we can win with guns or ships. Our troops should begin the process of extricating themselves from the peninsula. For that matter, all our troops should be withdrawn from Asia and elsewhere. Our ideology of democracy and capitalism will suceed, but we must be patient in letting it suceed."
The Asian Alliance
Fieldings:
"Repeatedly, members and former members of the Asian Alliance have stated their firm opposition to our policies and our presence. Although we should remain on good terms with all AA members our official withdrawl from the alliance should occur."
MacNally:
"Our presence in the Asian Alliance is crucial to maintaining the balance of ideas and policies of the alliance. Members of any alliance may not always agree and there may be heated discussions, but that does not mean the alliance is not working. We should become more involved in the alliance and its issues."
Wang:
"Although the alliance is based on good ideas, we reject the premise that we need formal alliances at all. Isn't Hudecia strong enough that it can stand on its own? We should maintain only minimal relations with other nations, but beyond that, everything should be limited. Its not isolationism... its selectivism."
Military/Hudecia Industries
Fieldings:
"As part of our new redistribution process, the military should be prepared to take big cuts as money is spent on issues more important to the Hudecian people, issues like health care and education. As for Hudecia Industries, it should be run by the Hudecian government, not a private board of directors."
MacNally:
"The military needs to be expanded and Hudecia Industries is the way to do it. Government aid has helped build the industry up and government contracts keep the thousands of Hudecians employed."
Wang:
"A business that profits off the pain, suffering and sacrifice of others is an outrage. It should not have been established in the first place. However, it would be costly now to dismantle it. So, the business should remain in private hands, however, they should expect less government business when the Hudecian Family Party is elected."
Questions? Comments? Denunciations?
"What are your policies on the recently established Sino-Taiwan treaty?"
Sino-Taiwan Treaty / Taiwanese Independence
Fieldings:
"This is yet another example of one of the prime problems with the Asian Alliance. How can two nations be one nation, and yet not be the same nation. The idea is incomprehensible! If Taiwan wants to be part of Sino, then let them join, if not, then don't. But the two governments.. or one... should decide, are they the same nation or not?"
MacNally:
"The Sino-Taiwan Treaty was a sad event for many Taiwanese people who have worked tirelessly to establish Taiwan in the world today. We see it as a step backwards in the effort for Taiwan to become a world leader. Still, although we cannot involve ourselves in the affairs of other nations, we should pressure the Taiwanese government to maintain its semi-independence."
Wang:
"Why is this an issue at all? This is the Hudecian elections, not the Sinoese or Taiwanese elections. *sighs* Well, since you brought it up, we should cut off relations with Taiwan and Sino immediately. Both are becoming problematic in our foreign relations and should simply be ignored. Out of sight, out of mind, I always say."
North Yaman
24-08-2004, 20:51
"What is your position on the recent North Yamani oil deal with Drapol?"
Fieldings:
"It is incomprehensible to me that anyone would WANT to deal with Drapol, so obviously Banat agents have taken control of the government. Once we have established this proof we will bring it before the world. The previous government did not pursue this issue deciding instead to let it go on the back burner."
MacNally:
"For whatever reason, North Yaman has decided to trade oil with Drapol. This we cannot and should not accept, however, we are limited in our options to deal with the threat to our interests in the Korean peninsula. A preferable route would to be discussing the issue with Spyr after firmly condemning the deal and perhaps taking action like seizing all Yamanese vessels that try to reach Drapol. (OOC: yeah I know you are using rail lines, but hey, he's trying to win votes, most likely he'll bomb Yamanese rail lines if he gets the chance)"
Wang:
"We see another sad example of the failure of our presence in Korea. Not only were thousands of our men and women's lives lost, but now former allies are supporting this bloody and tyrannical regime. Still, all hope is not lost, we trust that God will guide these nations back to Him and to democracy and freedom in His time. We need but withdraw and watch Him work."
"HNN (Hudecia News Network) Jacob Natter reporting live from downtown Toronto where LDP candidate Fieldings is addressing an estatic crowd after entrance polls showed him a full 40% ahead of the other candidates."
Fieldings climbed up and addressed the crowd:
"This election we have the chance to make Hudecian greater than ever before! With the Conservative party holding the reins of power we have seen our international support dwindle and our men come home in body bags!"
"Why do we do this to ourselves? Why does the Conservative party still espouse policies that will only lead to more Hudecian deaths? We need new leadership and we will get it! Prepare for the next 5 years because they will be the best Hudecia has ever known!"
*estatic cheering*

Candidates position on : The role of religion in government
Fieldings:
"Although I am a firm Catholic in my beliefs I do not believe that religion deserves a place in government. It is not the government's position to be dealing with matters of faith. Separation of church and state is a must and will be enforced by my government."
MacNally:
"I am a proud Protestant. My beliefs obviously affect how I will cast my vote on particular issues. Despite this, I believe that the government should not interfere with the practice of anyone's religion unless it endangers the lives of one of the believers or of others."
Wang:
"All religions should have the ability to be practiced within Hudecia and should have a vital role in the running of this country. A person's beliefs and opinions cannot be separated from their religion, and the government must recognize this fact."
"Taipei Times representative. What will your stance on internationalism be after the election?"

"What are the candidates positions on affirmative action, abortion, and free trade?"
Free Trade:
Fieldings:
"Free trade is an important part of our economy however, sometimes it can interfere and harm Hudecian businesses. Under these circumstances we should firmly and strongly enforce quotas and tariffs to prevent the loss of Hudecian jobs to sweat shops overseas!"
MacNally:
"The idea of free trade is wonderful. It helps promote businesses at home by forcing increased competition and helps promotes the economies of our allies abroad. Never should we return to quotas and tariffs as a means to promote unhealthy business at home. Never!"
Wang:
"Free trade is the most abominable and hideous idea that has came from the governments of today. It ruins businesses and economies of all that embrace it. Free trade is the kiss of death!"
Internationalism:
Fieldings:
"Hudecia should never stand alone, we always need our allies."
MacNally:
"We must do what is right, even if we must stand alone for a time. When others see our example, they will join us."
Wang:
"I thought I answered this... allies are not really even needed.. so why bother with internationalism?"
Affirmative Action:
Fieldings:
"We need more women and minorities to step up to take part in this great nation of ours. Even if we have to force them up. Quotas are a perfectly legal and legitimate course of action to do so."
MacNally:
"The idea of affirmative action says that some people, because of their race or gender, are not sufficiently smart or good enough to get a job. Which is completely wrong. People can and will suceed on their own merits. Equal opportunity for everyone and nothing more."
Wang:
"Equality is a wonderful concept. We must continue to enforce equality for everyone, however, there are better ways to do that then affirmative action. We must try to ensure that everyone is treated equally, no more, no less"
HNN News Flash
"Barring a major shift in public opinion, it appears that Fieldings will win the election by a landslide, winning a majority in Parliament and control of Cabinet."
bump.. polls closing soon!
