From Kasparov to Itarildë, A Change of Winds

The Blått Hus had an eery feeling about it. There was something interesting, something that was disturbing about it. It was obvious to the common passerby that nothing physical had changed, but the air around the presidential estate was different. It almost seemed more crisp, if that was at all possible on the humid August morning in the seaside city. Little evidence of what was occurring inside could have leaked to the outside world, and even precious few on the inside even knew. The wind carried lightly outside as the green leaves of the many oaks, hickories, and red maples fluttered carelessly. Clean, cut green grass was displayed proudly on the Blått Hus grounds, as dogwoods and crabapples stood firmly, expelling their natural beauty. Itarildë Eledhwen walked softly along the gravel path, observing the wildlife. She smiled a squirrel scuttered past, and looked up to see bluejays in the trees. A look back at eye level, and she was startled so much that she slightly jumped back and gasped. Boris Kasaparov smiled at her. "Hello, my dear Itarildë. I did not mean to frighten you." She smiled back. "Oh, do not worry, Boris. I was just mindlessly walking..had I been in a less occupied state, you would not have startled me. It is my fault." He turned his head to look back at the fading blue stone of the Blått Hus, and sighed. "Itarildë, things have been troubling me lately..Things I cannot control." She nodded vaguely. "You have every right to be fearful, for even I have been worried about it. You think I don't see the threats you have been receiving? I know what's going on, Boris, and I have been attempting to control my anger and offense that you would not confide--" Kasparov interrupted impatiently, and cut her statement short. "Itarildë, this is not the time for a lecture. The health of my family is at stake, as are their lives. I will not be staying much longer if this continues as it has, and I need to tell you secrets that few know." Her eyes went in sudden patterns. It would have scared those that were not used to Itarildë, but those that knew her knew that she expressed her anger or feelings through her eye color. They rapidly went in transition from her typical sapphire blue to bright, electric purple, to blazing yellow, to fiery orange, and they rested upon crimson red for a long moment. Soon they cooled to do a deeper blue than her normal color. She issued a sigh, and hung her head. "Boris, I will listen. But let us go inside, for I fear that it is not safe outside in such a dangerous world."

The view from the top of an oak tree was quite amazing on the Blått Hus grounds, as Vorzkech Jovonasic soon learned. He chewed on an apple, waiting for his targets to arrive. Security was supposedly heightened lately due to death threats that the Premier had been receiving. Very few knew of the death threats, save top officials in LIGA (Lietuv Intelligence Gathering Agency) and select few of the Premier's staff. Jovonasic was hired by inside forces to do the dirty work, and he did it gladly. The "heightened" security level apparently meant nothing more than people being frisked at the entrances and daily checks on the grounds, wherein security personnel didn't bother to look in the trees. If Jovonasic were not here for the mission to kill, he would've given pointers to Blått Hus security on checking things out. He then looked up from his apple and saw the Premier's Personal Advisor walking alone, about 200 meters away. He readied his sniper rifle, though not ready to shoot yet. At this angle, he could be lucky to get a good shot. He saw her stop as she smiled at a squirrel that scurried by. Pointy-eared hippies.., he thought idly, and he glanced over to see the Premier walking towards her. Perfect.. An entire scheme set up by close contacts of the Premier, Benedict Arnolds, would have the Premier to go talk to Itarildë. His closest advisors had planned his death this way by convincing him that something was wrong with his elven advisor and friend. Even Itarildë knew of their scheme, though nobody knew that she knew, save about fifteen agents that would kill the 'Benedict Arnolds' after they attempted to kill her with some random sniper. The Premier's life was also a concern of hers, but she knew that he would likely die.

Jovonasic had been watching for several moments, and finally it seemed that the small talk was done. He lifted the rifle to his shoulder, peered through and looked where the crosshairs were. He had a perfect aim of Kasparov's head, and next would go Itarildë. He rested his finger on the trigger. "And thus the URHP was changed forever," he muttered amusedly to himself. Then, the trigger of the sniper rifle was pulled.

In the next instant, everything was a complete blur. Kasparov turned around to walk back into the Blått Hus, almost uttering a word. Quickly after, a piercing shot rang out, causing Itarildë to duck suddenly in shock, and in the next moment she also hit the ground from a bullet. Within seconds, more shots rang out through the air, until it was clear that an all-out war was occurring on the Blått Hus grounds. The fifteen under the command of Itarildë were effectively wiping out close advisors of Kasparov that had killed him, and Jovonasic hit the ground with a thud after his location was found. Car bombs went off in several locations of Hvittsted, sending rocketing explosions through the air, and blasting windows for an entire block around the affected area. The car bombs had been placed by the supporters of Itarildë Eledhwen, to wipe out Kasparov's enemies. Kasparov's family, Ivana and Alexi, were hidden underground within minutes. Itarildë's men rushed her to a local hospital, where she was treated for severe wounds to the shoulder. Had the shot been an inch more accurate, it is likely that the elf would have lost her life. Complete chaos was only prevented under the quick thinking of top officials. Joseph Van Arsden, though in complete shock over the events, maintained order. Reports that a coup d'etat was in effect across the country forced Van Arsden to shut down all military installations and enforce martial law. Within one hour, the URHP had gone from being a freedom-loving state to one that was under the threat of complete chaos and terror. Curfews were enacted immediately, and the Armed Forces were on 24-hour patrol of every inhabited location of the URHP. After nearly a week of searches of all forests, cities, towns, villages, and anywhere else that a band of rebels would retreat, martial law was lifted. Itarildë Eledhwen was reported in Fair condition, and was soon released from the hospital. She returned to work at the Blått Hus immediately.

Much to her surprise, however, Joseph Van Arsden resigned and allowed her to take his position. She changed the government a little, naming herself Erasita of the URHP, and constructing a new capital. The new city, which is still under construction, will be named Itaros, and is being built on the coast of Aldonska, the westernmost Republic. About 100 km north of Itaros will be the home of Itarildë, Laurelus. The home of Itarildë is already a small fisherman's town, but a dock and airport are being constructed, and New Laurelus is being built about twenty kilometers north for those that wish to keep a small, quiet life, though Laurelus will remain peaceful and quiet. A large estate will be constructed in Laurelus to house the Erasita, and will be called the Villa Candeo. Itarildë Eledhwen then appointed Van Arsden as her Minister of Foreign Affairs, and has been appointing government officials lately. After the move to Itaros, it is undoubtful that the Erasita will be patient to connect with the rest of the world.
