A land not fit for men

Oberammergau
20-08-2004, 12:21
The sun turned the endless but lush steppes of Oberammergau into one dry, desolate plain. Hardly anyone dares to venture near the border where the steppes transform into the desert. Well to be honest nobody really came out of the cities. The economy almost imploded, the government corruption grew every year and the inflation was rising to unprecedented heights. The marks value decreased so rapidly it was refused in most banks of the world as a 'stable' currency. And to make matters even worse a terrible plague cleansed the scarse farming communities in the valleys were agriculture is possible, cutting down the population from 14 million to a mere 5 million.

Although the nation of Oberammergau seemed to be a breeding place for terrorism due to the strong islamic minority peace has always been secure. Strong religious convictions of the christian majority lived in peace with the islamic peoples of the south. A few skirmishes happened but those were so small skirmish isn't even the proper word for it.

The president of Oberammergau - a strange figure rarely seen by the population - has always been trying to improve the economic situation but with little success. Every attempt to gain profit led to even more losses. People lost faith in the government and the government lost faith in the people. Hardly noticed by the very few outsiders in Oberammergau a growing hatred between the rich, government and law enforcement and the common folk and the military was spreading all over the country. A civil war would be the final thing to push Oberammergau in the fires of total anarchy and chaos. Luckily for the people, things normalized a bit.

Years and years the nation of Oberammergau went unoticed in the world. Lying between the bigger nations who looted Oberammergau's rich coal and iron the deposits but now those supplies are dwindling and the economy crashing even further. If things don't improve soon Oberammergau will lose its rights as a sovereign nation, and that is something which everybody fears here.
