New Genoa

A slight breeze blew gently as Derek absorbed the moment. There wouldn't be too many more serene moments like this in the next four years; being Vice President for eight had taught him that. But not tonight. Tonight, Derek could relax with his friends and celebrate his inauguration as President of the Free Republic of New Genoa. He took a deep breath and stepped up to the podium where an enormous crowd was awaiting for him to take the Oath. Cameras flashed and reporters and onlookers chattered only to silence once he was licked his lips and put his mouth to the microphone.
Four months ago, I was stressed beyond belief. Four months ago, I was traveling to every corner of the nation, giving speeches like these. Four months ago, I was Vice President and now, now, I'm being given this huge responsibility like none other before. New Genoa is depending on me. The Liberal Party is depending on me.
He pondered to himself for what seemed to be like five minutes when, in actuality, it had only been seconds. Three seconds had burned; time was moving slower. Everything was in slow-motion for Derek Jackson. Time itself had slowed down.
He cleared his throat and held his right hand up in the air.
"I, Derek Raymond Jackson, do solemnly swear to faithfully execute my duties as President of the Free Republic of New Genoa to the best of my ability; to uphold, preserve, and defend the principles of the Free Republic of New Genoa's Constitution; to respect the civil liberties of the People; to not partake in acts of treason, bribery, or any other felony. I, Derek Raymond Jackson, will, to the best of my abilities, preserve the union of the Free Republic of New Genoa."
The crowd began clapping; at first, the clap was soft before it picked momentum when Derek began walking down the stairs. The crowd roared and the cameras flashed again -- random flashes of light illuminating the landscape. Derek waved to the as he walked towards his limousine which was parked at the end of the red carpet pathway. Its back door was open and a man was standing there, ready to escort President Jackson to the White House.
