Modern day U.S. English with strong U.K. influence. Of course, I don't actually use any of that U.K. influence (since I've never actually been to the U.K. and the only time I've heard it spoken in any significant amount is by bad actors on day-time TV) but I say it's there.
Kochbald
19-08-2004, 15:52
If you say it's a cross between two languages, explain. (I.E. 50% of our words are Spanish, 25% are English, and 25% are a cross between the two, like llame (yame) for name)

[OOC: I guess that's like the fact that Sarzonia uses the metric system and is attempting to convert to British spelling, but since I'm American, it's not going to show up in my posts. :-\

I'll just say that if you see me spell rumours in the British spelling, don't be surprised. Fleetwood Mac fan in the house!]
Sskiss

The Sskiss language is complex. Humans and humanoids could not speak it. It has two basic components. A vocal/audial and a physical/visual. The vocal aspect of the language originates either deep within the body cavity or through the throat. To further complicate things, some of the vocal aspects of the language cannot be heard by human ears. In other words, some of the language is infrasonic.

The visual aspect can be termed as various "signals" and "modifiers". Both of these denote various emotional and mental states. There is also "posturing" which helps denote status, rank, sex and general emotional and mental states and attitudes. The visual aspect of the language is often exaggerated.

Note that since Sskiss do not possess a series of complex a facial muscles (as seen in humans and other humanoids) the visual aspect of the language was needed to convey more information when communicating. And as a result evolved as a "replacement" method of communication.

Sskiss also possess bright patches of skin (usually red or blue) located at the throat and another oval patch on the snout, just in front of the eyes. These patches of skin are rich in chromatophores enabling an additional subtle means of communication, but the influence in communicating is not as pronounced as the vocal and more prominent visual methods.

I'm going to try to figure out what it means, tell me if I'm right
The Sskiss language is complex. Humans and humanoids could not speak it. It has two basic components. A speaking part and a gestures part. The speaking part of the language originates either deep within the larynx or through the throat. To further complicate things, some of the vocal aspects of the language cannot be heard by human ears. In other words, some of the language is above the frequency of human hearing.

The visual aspect can be termed as various "signals" and "gestures". Both of these denote various emotional and mental states. There is also "posturing" which helps denote status, rank, sex and general emotional and how you are. The visual aspect of the language is often exaggerated.

Fairly close, except that a portion of the language is BELOW the human ability to hear (infrasonic - low pitch) not ABOVE, which would be (ultrasonic - high pitch). Aside from that, it's reasonable accurate.

As for Chromatophores, they are basically skin cells which can change pigmentation (colour or tone) almost instantly. Such example include Cuttlefish and other Octopii, as well (to a somewhat lesser extent) Chameleons, a type of lizard.
Schultaria Prime
19-08-2004, 16:57
The primary languages of the Nation of Schultaria Prime (outside of modern English) are the languages of Schultarian Alphabetic and Schultarian Symbolic.

Schultarian, for the most part, is based on a collection of multiple words found commonly in the modern world. However, the Schultarian language is also some what limited and confusing to the casual speaker as multiple words are often collected into one unifying word with different inflections.

A few examples:

Conprodish (Implies the concept of manufacturing for most speakers, although it relates to such ideas as native-built technology.)

Kerga (Offensive War / Weaponry)

Kamor (Defense / Protection / Security)

Nakaaga (Thought / Computation / Philosophy)

-----

Any foreigner who attempts to read Schultarian Symbolic is nearly always doomed to failure; not because they lack the necessary intelligence to read the symbols (their meanings are usually straightforward enough to understand), but because they do not think like Schultarians. Schultarian Symbolic is a thought implied language, that is, you need to share some experience or history with the writer in order to completely understand the written word.

A small example of Schultarian Symbolic: Our Country's Name:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v352/emschultz/SchultariaSP.jpg

Written Schultarian is composed of three major sections, the inital declaration, one underlying series of implication punctuation marks, and a closing series of punctuation marks.

The first seven symbols of this particular piece of writing declare the word, either usually by what actions are performed by the thing in question or by its perceived history in Schultarian Culture.

The implication punctuation, as seen in the fifth symbol from the right (two dots), are a series of punctuations that include derivations of time, space, or personalization.

The closing punctuation (last five symbols) is categorized into two separate areas: the pronouncement and the reverence. The pronouncement (what looks like offset quotations) usually states a conjunction (Schultarians only use three: and, or, and I state), while the reverence (which would look like open dots or large periods) states the emotional impact of the object which usually truly defines the word.

NINOR
19-08-2004, 18:32
in the land of NINOR, we speak Fleet Common or Engineering Standard.

Engineering Standard is the more technical variant, and consists of abbreviated jargon for scientifically advanced systems. It is much like the military-legal beaurocratese of the late 21st Century.

Both are a mix of technical old English, Amerglish, High Germanic, some Gaelic, with an under current of Latin.

English speakers of the 21st century would understand 8 words in 10 of Common, and maybe 4 of 10 in Standard.
Greater San Francisco
19-08-2004, 18:35
Greater San Francisco is extremely ethnically diverse with an immigrant population of roughly 50%, and does not have an official language. Written statements from the national government are simultaneously released in English, Spanish, Chinese, and Hindi; other languages are sometimes recognized (or ignored) by local governments according to the particular linguistic makeup of a particular city or county. English, however, is generally considered the common language of Greater San Franciscans, and almost all large business and government affairs are carried out in English. Public schools are also taught in English, but another language (generally Chinese or Spanish, but also depending on the local situation) is also taught starting in kindergarten. Standard GSF English is almost identical to standard American English, but spoken by the general population, it has a great deal of Spanish, and to a lesser degree, Chinese vocabulary, as well as a large amount of slang terms. Local dialects are prevalent, especially among immigrant communities.

Sure, why not?

The Official Language of the Dominion is, for all intents and purposes, Italian, with the nation based heavily off said influences. Second most spoken, for ease of interaction, English (common, what have you). Also spoken in various regions of the nation -- Latin (mostly among the higher learning circles or Christian groups), and variations on Germanic and Arabic languages, due to historic influences, occupations, etc. One can assume that those who have immigrated to the Dominion likewise retain their native tongues as well, though they would likely be in numbers too small to bother with here.

Weyr
19-08-2004, 19:36
Addendum

Common Weyrik is effectively the only real Weyrik still in use. It consists of many abbreviations and contractions, and most of its conjugations are irregular or multi-purpose.

A sentence in Weyrik revolves around the verb. The simplest sentence would consist of :: direct object prefix, or subject prefix |'| root |'| tense suffix

The standard Common Weyrik sentence:
Allen nan nian allosi eroth siwa autoeldjan.
Allen he him shot with a rifle.

The sentence you'll hear on the street:
(Allen) n'allosie s'auroni.
He/him was/got shot by boomstick.

"Nan"(third person singular pronoun) has been removed. We combined "nian"(third person singular prefix), "allosi"(to shoot), and attached "e" instead of "eroth"(past). "Siwa"(with) has been turned into "s" and attached as a prefix to "eldjan"(autorifle/submachinegun), which has been turned to "autoni"(boomstick). In theory, the "n'" prefix means both 'he' and 'him', depending on usage.

Now -that- was confusing.

First person singular : ian (i')
Second person singular : tian (t')
Third person singular : nan (n')
First person plural : jawe (j') *can also be used for indefinite subjects
Second person pplural : N/A
Thuird person plural : nawe (n')

Suffixes:
Past tense suffixes are replaced with "e".

The Gulf States
19-08-2004, 20:04
The official language of the country is English.

However, since our nation is so enormous and diverse - there's quite a bit more to just English. Some of our autonomous territories have different languages than English.

- "The Mainland" and 10 of the 11 Canadian provinces (no BC or YT) use English
- Haiti and Quebec use French
- Brasil uses Portugese
- The Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and The Guyanas use Spanish

Most of the population in the territories are multilingual to English. And many in the mainland are picking up the other three languages.
