Your nation and sports

Kochbald
19-08-2004, 14:20
How is your nation doing in various sports, including the olympics?
Kochbald is home to the famous Kochbald 24 auto race. It is held monthly and is a 24-hour auto race in which you must make as many laps as possible around a selected city in 24 hours.
Juna Green set a record in Men's High Jump in the Olympics, winning a gold in the process. Green Beaver has just been named "The World's Greatest Tennis Player" He serves at 220 miles per hour with pinpoint accuracy.
UPDATE- Kochbald has just won the silver medal in baseball at the olympics. Star player Joe Green has signed a contract with the Atlanta Braves and will make his debut at Montreal at 7 PM EDT tonight.
Also, Kochbald received the bronze in soccer and weightlifting, and the silver in 100 and 800 meter running.
Sarzonia
19-08-2004, 16:49
The Sarzonian men's senior national team (soccer) is currently competing in the Cup of Harmony for teams that missed the World Cup. It captured the Baptism of Fire Cup and missed out on qualifying for the World Cup finals by two points. In its region, it lost the third place match in the AOCAF (Atlantian Oceania Cup of Association Football). The U21 team is currently tied for the group lead and is a top seed in the tournament.

That is the only sport Sarzonia competes in on the international level. The country is in the beginning stages of establishing a hockey league, a baseball league, and a team handball league. It is also in the planning stages for competing in a regional athletic competition similar to the Goodwill Games.

we have been involved in international competitions before and done well. Racing vehicles is big if not the biggest sport here.
Cockbill Street
19-08-2004, 18:10
Cockbill Street is a nation famed around some parts of the NationStates world for never making it. The only thing they ever won was an international SuperStars competition - even in the regional cricket tournaments, they have come up short - although they have taken home two Cups of Harmony, that is for the teams that don't qualify for the World Cup.

Still, Cockbill Street have taken part in a vast array of sports - team handball, in which they qualified for four semi-finals but never managed to take the trophy home, ice hockey, where they were doomed to failure in the Cherry Cup, field hockey, where they didn't even know the rules but still reached a final, cricket, where they have played in two international championships - but one was aborted due to a war, and rugby, where they have played in one championship that was also aborted.

In addition, Streetian athletes excel (well, on a Streetian scale) at floorball, rowing, swimming, pickaxe-throwing, and for some insane reason which nobody have been able to figure out, table tennis.
Al-Sabir
19-08-2004, 18:17
Teamsports as football, soccer, field hockey, rugby, polo and baseball are very popular in the Republic and its high national standards are the key to excellent international performance.

Rowing might be a strange sport to practise in Al-Sabir, as of the utter lack of water, but indoor rowing has developed many excellent rowers, most only training in an actual boat in spring and autumn on the scarce rivers and even on the calm, shallow sea. In the single scull cathegory at the last Olympics, Farida Bin-Sayd won the gold medal, a bronze medal went to Rasul Brahimi, this time in the men single scull. The men's 8+ also got the bronze medal.

Something Al-Sabirians absolutely fail at is winter sports, as there is no snow or ice at any time of the year.
Frosty Leaves

Even if they did compete they wouldn't pass the drug tests.
The Gulf States
19-08-2004, 20:18
Our nation's sport is baseball. We're fanatical about it.

We also enjoy American football, basketball, and hockey. International football (soccer) is also gaining some popularity.

The Parrot Islands
19-08-2004, 21:06
The national sport of the Parrot Islands is archery. The archer Hastur Schmidt has made some international fame by winning a silver medal at the last Olympic Games. Parrot Islanders are also always among the competitors at regional sailing events.
Cathaynon
19-08-2004, 23:09
Main sports of Cathaynon include Swordfighting/fencing, American Football, and Watersports (polo, swimming).

The favorite sport by the people is Jet Races. 10 military officials race around in Aquilla Landers (a fast scouting jet made only in Cathaynon), and the winner earns 25000Cathaias (=25000USD) and a trip to anywhere in the region of Waters Of Atlantis.
Hattia

Hattians generally excel at target/skeet shooting, archery, fencing, and chess, if you'd consider that a sport.
Agrigento
19-08-2004, 23:54
Soccer, Baseball and Ultimate Frisbee are the local favorites. While the National Baseball League gets the highest attendance and ratings, Soccer fans are a lot more fanatical. If the local Baseball team loses, it's upsetting, if the local Soccer team loses, it's the Apocalypse.

Ultimate Frisbee is gaining in popularity, and the seeds of a league are just now entering fruitation.
Aquiliana

Callisdrun
21-08-2004, 07:56
Callisdrun's top sport in international competition is rowing, in men's and women's 8's. Because of the fanaticism Callisdrunian rowers take to the water, broken equipment and injuries are common. Such is the price for insane speeds. Callisdrun usually just sends the best college team to the Olympics. The University of Drun has gone the most. Instead of a bow-ball, the Callisdrunian teams often have a dragonhead reminiscient of those found on old longboats. Callisdrun's teams are known most for their monstrous sprints, and consistantly medal in international competition. Their blue, black and silver uniforms are becoming a familiar sight in the finals of international races.

Callisdrun is also strong in swimming. Callisdrunian style swimming is lacking of any grace whatsoever, but incredibly powerful. Callisdrunian swimmers have been known to lose conciousness at the end of races due to the strain. Several Callisdrunians have been very successful internationally in swimming.

Callisdrun's gymnastics program has also been very successful, albeit at the cost of more than a few injuries and even deaths due to the extreme risks they take. The gymnastics team is led by the charismatic Anasztaizia Novikas. A beautiful vampiress despite the lingering scars of her numerous injuries, one would swear on learning of the events of her career that she had broken every bone in her body, and one wouldn't be far off. Now a veteran, because of the dangerous routines she does, she has suffered broken legs, arms, ribs and collar bone fractures. Despite this, she continues to be an amazing performer, especially on the floor and uneven bars. She wears a dark red uniform reminiscient of those worn by Callisdrunian gymnasts several decades ago, during what's considered to be the golden era of Callisdrunian gymnastics, when the Communist party held power in Callisdrun.
Cyberous
21-08-2004, 08:14
Cyberous has a flourishing youth sports program, where team based sports are highly regarded and funded both by the government and from enthusiatic community funding. Highly trained scouts are well placed in the teaching staff to identify those with the potential to be trained to olympian standards.

In the capital of Cyberia, the international school has a multi million pound Sports centre which is partly funded by community based groups. It is the location for the majority of high level training, and is also the home Soccer ground of the Nations Womens Soccer Team, Bergkampia who currently have 100% win record in the region.
Moontian
21-08-2004, 13:11
Moontian does not have a major sporting history, preferring the more intellectual pursuits. However, there are a few sports that capture the hearts of many people. These are (in no particular order): rugby union, hoverskid racing, cricket, touch footy, and kendo. The popularity of hoverskid racing is that absolutely anyone in the nation can take part, and that there are areas set apart specifically for anyone to race their 'skids.
