Can someone teach me the basis of Battleship Design?

I've been trying to design my own battleship for quite some time now and i'm always ending up with poorly draw sucky BMPs with no purpose....

Example:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v454/Swedish_Dominions/SDCLASSBATTLESHIP.bmp

So can someone teach me the complete basis of Battleship Design...... Like how to draw them nice.... I have no Photoshop experience, but i have the program.....

You can post in this thread and/or add me on your MSN.....
Please :(

The design of military units is not simulated by the NationStates game engine and is strictly roleplay. Hence, iMove http://www.forums.jolt.co.uk/images/icons/icon2.gif "NationStates".

Okay, I need to learn to actually read the topic. Mea Culpa.

Hmmm.... A question about graphics manipulation programs....

Since the reason for the inquiry is roleplay-related, I'm still going to move this to "NationStates".

I've learned one thing in my years of designing stuff:
If you EVER are designing something yourself, use a 3D modeling program. If you are incapible of this, talk to Raysia. He kicks so much ass at modeling, it's incredible.

Raysia don't exist........
I can't send a TG to him.....

btw, do you recommend any 3d modelling software?

Oh right, I keep forgetting that he doesn't have that nation anymore. Just message him at Capsule Corporation.

As for software, Maya is always good, but if you want free software, go with DOGA. I can't provide a link, unfortunately, but if you want to learn more, just do a Google search. Both Maya and DOGA are pretty popular, so you should find something educational.

The thing with Maya and all the 'nice' 3d modelling programs is that they are so expensive. I don't feel that 800+ dollars is really within the means of most casual modellers.

Of course, there are always less savory methods of aquiring them, but I don't talk about those.

Doga is good and easy to use, but you are restricted to using premade parts.

That kicks ass royally. I especially like the second picture.

Consider using a different background, though. The tank blends into the background color too much.

I searched for DOGA on the net and guess what I found...

Dogs have always been natural yogis, and their tranquility of mind, ability to be in the moment, and contented outlook are widely considered to be the result of their long and devoted practice of doga. Dogis Benny, Buster, and Cricket practiced in obscurity for years, perfecting their dogic principles. Now at last they reveal the powerful secrets of doga. Many of the movements and positions of doga can inspire and assist humans in their own yoga practice. Doga presents the major asanas or postures, from the Downward-Facing Dog to the relaxing Happy Puppy and restorative Pup's Pose. Each stretch is demonstrated by one of the dogis, with accompanying text to help people adapt positions to their own practice. Also included are breathing techniques such as the hot breath, or pant, and tips on practicing with your own dogi. Anyone who does yoga or owns a dog is sure to find inspiration in these pages. On the path to health and inner harmony, Doga shows the way.

Things like that always happen to me :P

I would, but unfortunately I've never been good with battleship specs. Thus the distinct lack of naval units in my store (http://members.cox.net/resicorp/). :(

I suggest DOGA-L3 and plenty of time.
Start small and simple, and gradually work your way up in complexity.
Also, play around with the textures and materials. (Textures go a long way in making your stuff look nice.

Here's an example of my work.

Good job so far, SD; and good luck.

Just for future referance, I believe that this is in the incorrect forum. Try Gameplay, or Technical next time.

(Sorry if someone already told you this ...I have a tendancy to skip some posts).

Unless you want to make a hell of a lot of models, it's cheaper to buy a good scanner and learn to draw well. I love 3-D model makers, but I really can't afford to go spending all my money on them. Her are a few samples of my aircraft.

Sorry for the bad quality of the top image, it has been reduced in size, thus losing detail.

Does anyone know how to use a different background, like a sea or a city or something?

Indeed.
At the bar at the top, click on Display, and on the menu that pops up click on rendering properties. In the bottom right corner of the box there's an image that shows what the background is/will be (make sure you have clicked on "Specify BG Picture"). Click Refer and then just select the image you want from your hard drive.

Fury class BattleCarrier (http://aa.1asphost.com/AllyG/furyclassbattlecarrier.JPG)
Obliteration class trimaran superbattleship (http://aa.1asphost.com/AllyG/obliteration2.JPG)
Predator class superbattleship (http://aa.1asphost.com/AllyG/pred3.JPG)

Edit: My naval store, you can get my ships stats from it if you want them (though I don't pretend to be an expert, I merely did some math to scale up current US warships)

Damn, you are all very good at modelling... I'm very pants... :headbang:

Still, Swedish, if you have any pictures of something you'd like me to have a go at modelling in 3D, I'd love to have a go at designing something to someone elses specs... :)

Feel free to PM me or telegram my nation.

Yes, those instructions were for Doga L3.
(Sorry, from the pics you posted I assumed it was Doga L3 you had, but I apologise for not saying what I was actually talking about...)

Free Download of full version of Doga L3 (http://www.doga.co.jp/english/download/dogal3-1.html)
This is where I got my copy. Just follow the instructions. You just need a name and email (which can both be fake if you like).

Instructions for fancy Doga L3 stuff I found a while ago, but admittedly have never used (http://zircher.iwarp.com/doga/l3_pa.htm)

I've got L3 but it's a shareware and i can't render the images.......
Are you sure that's the fullversion? No shareware, Complete Rendering capabilities?

The pictures are made in L1. Which have Rendering capabilities.
